- We present spectra for 33 previously unclassified white dwarf systems brighter than V=17, primarily in the southern hemisphere. Of these new systems, 26 are DA, 4 are DC, 2 are DZ, and 1 is DQ. We suspect that three of these systems are unresolved double degenerates. We obtained VRI photometry for these 33 objects, as well as for 23 known white dwarf systems without trigonometric parallaxes, also primarily in the southern hemisphere. For the 56 objects, we converted the photometry values to fluxes and fit them to a spectral energy distribution using the spectroscopy to determine which model to use (i.e., pure hydrogen, pure helium, or metal-rich helium), resulting in estimates of Teff and distance.

- We present new SDSS and Washington photometry of the young outer-halo stellar system Segue 3. Combined with archival VI-observations, our most consistent results yield Z=0.006+/-0.001, log(Age)=9.42+/-0.08, (m-M)_0_=17.35+/-0.08, and E(B-V)=0.09+/-0.01, with a high binary fraction of 0.39+/-0.05 derived using the Padova models. We confirm that mass-segregation has occurred, supporting the hypothesis that this cluster is being tidally disrupted. A three-parameter King model yields a cluster radius of r_cl_=0.017{deg}+/-0.007{deg}, a core radius of r_c_=0.003{deg}+/-0.001{deg}, and a tidal radius of r_t_=0.04{deg}+/-0.02{deg}. A comparison of Padova and Dartmouth model-grids indicates that the cluster is not significantly {alpha}-enhanced, with a mean [Fe/H]=-0.55_-0.12_^+0.15^dex, and a population age of only 2.6+/-0.4Gyr. We rule out a statistically significant age spread at the main-sequence turnoff because of a narrow subgiant branch, and discuss the role of stellar rotation and cluster age, using Dartmouth and Geneva models: approximately 70% of the Seg 3 stars at or below the main-sequence turnoff have enhanced rotation. Our results for Segue 3 indicate that it is younger and more metal-rich than all previous studies have reported to date. From colors involving Washington C and SDSS-u filters, we identify several giants and a possible blue straggler for future follow-up spectroscopic studies, and we produce spectral energy distributions of previously known members and potential Segue 3 sources with Washington (CT_1_), Sloan (ugri), and VI-filters. Segue 3 shares the characteristics of unusual stellar systems that have likely been stripped from external dwarf galaxies as they are being accreted by the Milky Way, or that have been formed during such an event. Its youth, metallicity, and location are all inconsistent with Segue 3 being a cluster native to the Milky Way.

- We present the discoveries of a brown dwarf (BD) and a low-mass star from the Kepler and K2 missions. The newly discovered BD is EPIC 212036875b and the low-mass star is KOI-607b. EPIC 212036875b has a mass of M_b_=52.3+/-1.9 M_J_, a radius of R_b_=0.874+/-0.017 R_J_, and orbits its host star in P=5.169885+/-0.000027 days. Its host star is a late F-type star with M_*_=1.288+/-0.065 M_{sun}_, R_*_= 1.498+/-0.025 R_{sun}_, and T_eff_=6238+/-60 K. KOI-607b has a mass of M_b_=95.1+/-3.4 M_J_, a radius of R_b_=1.089+/-0.089 R_J_, and an orbital period of P=5.89399148+/-0.00000060 days. The primary star in the KOI-607 system is a G dwarf with M_*_=0.993+/-0.052 M_{sun}_, R_*_= 0.915+/-0.031 R_{sun}_, and T_eff_=5418+/-87 K. We also revisit a BD, CWW 89Ab, that was previously published by Nowak et al. 2017AJ....153..131N (under the designation EPIC 219388192b). CWW 89Ab is one of two known transiting BDs associated with a star cluster, which illustrates the need for more BDs with accurate masses, radii, and reliable age determinations to test theoretical models. We find that the newly discovered BD, EPIC 212036875b, falls in the middle of the so-called BD desert, indicating that EPIC 212036875b is either a particularly rare object, or the BD desert may not be so dry after all.

- We report the discovery of 6576 new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf and subdwarf stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We obtain Teff, logg and mass for hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf stars (DAs) and helium atmosphere white dwarf stars (DBs), estimate the calcium/helium abundances for the white dwarf stars with metallic lines (DZs) and carbon/helium for carbon-dominated spectra (DQs). We found one central star of a planetary nebula, one ultracompact helium binary (AM CVn), one oxygen line-dominated white dwarf, 15 hot DO/PG1159s, 12 new cataclysmic variables, 36 magnetic white dwarf stars, 54 DQs, 115 helium-dominated white dwarfs, 148 white dwarf + main-sequence star binaries, 236 metal-polluted white dwarfs, 300 continuum spectra DCs, 230 hot subdwarfs, 2936 new hydrogen-dominated white dwarf stars, and 2675 cool hydrogen-dominated subdwarf stars. We calculate the mass distribution of all 5883 DAs with S/N>=15 in DR12, including the ones in DR7 and DR10, with an average S/N=26, corrected to the 3D convection scale, and also the distribution after correcting for the observed volume, using 1/Vmax.

- We present JHKs observations of the metal-poor ([Fe/H]{<}-1.40) dwarf-irregular galaxies, Leo A and Sextans A, obtained with the WIYN High-resolution Infrared Camera at Kitt Peak. Their near-IR stellar populations are characterized by using a combination of color-magnitude diagrams and by identifying long-period variable stars. We detected red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars, consistent with membership of the galaxy's intermediate-age populations (2-8Gyr old). Matching our data to broadband optical and mid-IR photometry, we determine luminosities, temperatures, and dust-production rates (DPR) for each star. We identify 32 stars in LeoA and 101 stars in Sextans A with a DPR>10^-11^M_{sun}_/yr, confirming that metal-poor stars can form substantial amounts of dust. We also find tentative evidence for oxygen-rich dust formation at low metallicity, contradicting previous models that suggest oxygen-rich dust production is inhibited in metal-poor environments. The total rates of dust injection into the interstellar medium of Leo A and Sextans A are (8.2+/-1.8)x10^-9^M_{sun}_/yr and (6.2+/-0.2)x10^-7^M_{sun}/yr, respectively. The majority of this dust is produced by a few very dusty evolved stars and does not vary strongly with metallicity.

- The seven approximately Earth-sized transiting planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system provide a unique opportunity to explore habitable- and nonhabitable-zone small planets within the same system. Its habitable-zone exoplanets - due to their favorable transit depths - are also worlds for which atmospheric transmission spectroscopy is within reach with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We present here an independent reduction and analysis of two HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-infrared transit spectroscopy data sets for six planets (b through g). Utilizing our physically motivated detector charge-trap correction and a custom cosmic-ray correction routine, we confirm the general shape of the transmission spectra presented by de Wit et al. (2016Natur.537...69D). Our data reduction approach leads to a 25% increase in the usable data and reduces the risk of confusing astrophysical brightness variations (e.g., flares) with instrumental systematics. No prominent absorption features are detected in any individual planet's transmission spectra; by contrast, the combined spectrum of the planets shows a suggestive decrease around 1.4 {mu}m similar to an inverted water absorption feature. Including transit depths from K2, the SPECULOOS-South Observatory, and Spitzer, we find that the complete transmission spectrum is fully consistent with stellar contamination owing to the transit light source effect. These spectra demonstrate how stellar contamination can overwhelm planetary absorption features in low-resolution exoplanet transit spectra obtained by HST and JWST and also highlight the challenges in combining multi-epoch observations for planets around rapidly rotating spotted stars.

- Photospheric nitrogen abundances for a sample of 26 Be stars and 16 normal B stars were found using high-resolution spectra from the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) spectroscopic survey. Nitrogen abundances were obtained using non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium equivalent widths and line profiles, and Monte Carlo simulation was used to determine the error bounds of the measured nitrogen abundances due to uncertainties in the adopted stellar parameters, continuum normalization and atomic data. In addition, the effects of gravitational darkening and disc contamination on the measured Be star nitrogen abundances were investigated. About one third of the sample of Be stars and half of the normal B-type stars have nitrogen enrichment that may be due to rotational mixing in these rapidly rotating objects. Corrections for gravitational darkening and disc contamination do not significantly change the overall results for the Be star sample. The average nitrogen abundance of the B and Be star samples coincides with the solar abundance, although the dispersion in the nitrogen abundances is much larger in the Be star sample. The Be star sample also has a significant fraction of sub-solar nitrogen abundance objects that are not present in significant numbers in the B star sample. This may point to yet unresolved systematic errors in the analysis of the Be stars.

In this paper, we report on the results of this project for the first 664 stars in the northern hemisphere. These results include precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physical parameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, and overall metallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of our program stars.

- We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parameters for the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in the Hipparcos catalog within 40pc of the Sun. Here we report on results for 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These results include new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physical parameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of our program stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars in this sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, and a table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature of the distribution of the chromospheric activity parameter logR'_HK_ depends strongly on the metallicity, and we explore the nature of the "low-metallicity" chromospherically active.

- We present a detailed and uniform study of oxygen abundance from two different oxygen lines at 6158{AA} and 6300{AA} in a large sample of solar-type stars. The results are used to check the behaviour of these spectral lines as oxygen abundance indicators and to study the evolution of oxygen in thick and thin disk populations of the Galaxy. Equivalent width measurements were carried out for the [OI]6158 and [OI]6300 lines. LTE abundances were obtained from these two lines in 610 and 535 stars, respectively. Careful error analysis has been performed.
