- The ATLASGAL compact source catalog is based on the ATLASGAL survey. This survey was made using the LABOCA bolometer array at APEX, at 870-microns covering the Galactic Plane between 330 degrees and 21-degrees in Galactic longitude and -1.5 to +1.5-degrees in Galactic Latitude. This catalog was created using SEXTRACTOR and contains 6639 sources, with a 99% completeness for sources with peak flux above 6{sigma}.

- We present the results from a 1.1-mm imaging survey of the SSA22 field, known for having an overdensity of z=3.1 Lyman{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs), taken with the astronomical thermal emission camera (AzTEC) on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). We imaged a 950-arcmin2 field down to a 1{sigma} sensitivity of 0.7-1.3mJy/beam to find 125 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) with a signal-to-noise ratio >=3.5. Counterpart identification using radio and near/mid-infrared data was performed and one or more counterpart candidates were found for 59 SMGs. Photometric redshifts based on optical to near-infrared images were evaluated for 45 of these SMGs with Spitzer/IRAC data and the median value is found to be z=2.4. By combining these estimations with estimates from the literature, we determined that 10 SMGs might lie within the large-scale structure at z=3.1. The two-point angular cross-correlation function between LAEs and SMGs indicates that the positions of the SMGs are correlated with the z=3.1 protocluster. These results suggest that the SMGs were formed and evolved selectively in the high dense environment of the high-redshift Universe. This picture is consistent with the predictions of the standard model of hierarchical structure formation.

- We present a 0.72deg^2^ contiguous 1.1-mm survey in the central area of the Cosmological Evolution Survey field carried out to a 1{sigma}~1.26mJy/beam depth with the AzTEC camera mounted on the 10-m Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We have uncovered 189 candidate sources at a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)>=3.5, out of which 129, with S/N>=4, can be considered to have little chance of being spurious (<~2 per cent). We present the number counts derived with this survey, which show a significant excess of sources when compared to the number counts derived from the ~0.5deg^2^ area sampled at similar depths in the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES).

- Instruments using arrays of many bolometers have become increasingly common in the past decade. The maps produced by such instruments typically include the filtering effects of the instrument as well as those from subsequent steps performed in the reduction of the data. Therefore interpretation of the maps is dependent upon accurately calculating the transfer function of the chosen reduction technique on the signal of interest. Many of these instruments use non-linear and iterative techniques to reduce their data because such methods can offer an improved signal-to-noise ratio over those that are purely linear, particularly for signals at scales comparable to that subtended by the array. We discuss a general approach for measuring the transfer function of principal component analysis on point sources that are small compared to the spatial extent seen by any single bolometer within the array. The results are applied to previously released AzTEC catalogues of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS), Lockman Hole, Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North and GOODS-South fields. Source flux density and noise estimates increase by roughly +10 per cent for fields observed while AzTEC was installed at the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment and +15-25 per cent while AzTEC was installed at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Detection significance is, on average, unaffected by the revised technique. The revised photometry technique will be used in subsequent AzTEC releases.

- We present results from a survey carried out by the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) on a 9deg^2^ field near the South Ecliptic Pole at 250, 350, and 500um. The median 1{sigma} depths of the maps are 36.0, 26.4, and 18.4mJy, respectively. We apply a statistical method to estimate submillimeter galaxy number counts and find that they are in agreement with other measurements made with the same instrument and with the more recent results from Herschel/SPIRE. Thanks to the large field observed, the new measurements give additional constraints on the bright end of the counts. We identify 132, 89, and 61 sources with S/N>=4 at 250, 350, 500um, respectively and provide a multi-wavelength combined catalog of 232 sources with a significance >=4{sigma} in at least one BLAST band.

- We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the [CII] 158um transition and the dust continuum in HZ4, a typical star-forming galaxy when the Universe was only ~1Gyr old (z~5.5). Our high ~0.3" spatial resolution allows us to study the relationships between [CII] line emission, star formation rate, and far-infrared emission on spatial scales of ~2kpc. In the central ~4kpc of HZ4 the [CII]/FIR is ~3x10^-3^ on global scales as well as on spatially resolved scales of ~2kpc, comparable to the ratio observed in local moderate starburst galaxies such as M82 or M83. For the first time in an individual normal galaxy at this redshift, we find evidence for outflowing gas from the central star-forming region in the direction of the minor axis of the galaxy. The projected velocity of the outflow is ~400km/s, and the neutral gas-mass outflow rate is ~3-6 times higher than the star formation rate in the central region. Finally, we detect a diffuse component of [CII] emission, or [CII] halo, that extends beyond the star-forming disk and has a diameter of ~12kpc. The outflow, which has a velocity approximately half of the escape velocity of the system, most likely partly fuels the [CII] extended emission. Together with the kinematic analysis of HZ4 (presented in a forthcoming paper), the analysis supports the hypothesis that HZ4 is a typical star-forming disk at z~5 with interstellar medium conditions similar to present-day galaxies forming stars at a similar level, driving a galactic outflow that may already play a role in its evolution.

- Of the almost 40 star-forming galaxies at z>~5 (not counting quasi-stellar objects) observed in [CII] to date, nearly half are either very faint in [CII] or not detected at all, and fall well below expectations based on locally derived relations between star formation rate and [CII] luminosity. This has raised questions as to how reliable [CII] is as a tracer of star formation activity at these epochs and how factors such as metallicity might affect the [CII] emission. Combining cosmological zoom simulations of galaxies with SIGAME (SImulator of GAlaxy Millimeter/submillimeter Emission), we modeled the multiphased interstellar medium (ISM) and its emission in [CII], as well as in [OI] and [OIII], from 30 main-sequence galaxies at z~6 with star formation rates ~3-23M_{sun}_/yr, stellar masses ~(0.7-8)x10^9^M_{sun}_, and metallicities ~(0.1-0.4)xZ_{sun}_. The simulations are able to reproduce the aforementioned [CII] faintness of some normal star-forming galaxy sources at z>=5. In terms of [OI] and [OIII], very few observations are available at z>~5, but our simulations match two of the three existing z>~5 detections of [OIII] and are furthermore roughly consistent with the [OI] and [OIII] luminosity relations with star formation rate observed for local starburst galaxies. We find that the [CII] emission is dominated by the diffuse ionized gas phase and molecular clouds, which on average contribute ~66% and ~27%, respectively. The molecular gas, which constitutes only ~10% of the total gas mass, is thus a more efficient emitter of [CII] than the ionized gas, which makes up ~85% of the total gas mass. A principal component analysis shows that the [CII] luminosity correlates with the star formation activity of a galaxy as well as its average metallicity. The low metallicities of our simulations together with their low molecular gas mass fractions can account for their [CII] faintness, and we suggest that these factors may also be responsible for the [CII]-faint normal galaxies observed at these early epochs.

- Voids are the most under-dense large-scale regions in the Universe. Galaxies inhabiting voids are one of the keys to understand the intrinsic processes of galaxy evolution, as external factors such as multiple galaxy mergers or a dense self-collapsing environment are negligible. We present the first molecular gas mass survey of void galaxies. We compare these new data, together with data for the atomic gas mass (MHI) and star formation rate (SFR) from the literature to those of galaxies in filaments and walls in order to better understand how molecular gas and star formation are related to the large-scale environment. We observed at the IRAM 30-m telescope the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission of 20 void galaxies selected from the VoidGalaxy Survey (VGS), with a stellar mass range from 108.5to 1010.3M. We detected 15 objects in at least one CO line. We compare the molecular gas mass (MH2), the star formation efficiency (SFE=SFR/MH2), the atomic gas mass, the molecular-to-atomic gas-mass ratio, and the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of the void galaxies with two control samples of galaxies in filaments and walls,selected from xCOLD GASS and EDGE-CALIFA, for different stellar mass bins and taking the star formation activity into account. In general, we do not find any significant differences between void galaxies and the control sample. In particular, we do not find any evidence for a difference in the molecular gas mass or molecular gas mass fraction. Also for the other parameters (SFE,atomic gas mass, molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratio, and sSFR) we find similar (within the errors) mean values between void, and filament and wall galaxies when limiting the sample to star-forming galaxies. We find no evidence for an enhanced sSFR in void galaxies. Some tentative differences emerge when studying trends with stellar mass: The SFE of void galaxies might be lower than in filament and wall galaxies for low stellar masses, and there might be a trend of increasing deficiency in the HI content in void galaxies compared to galaxies in filaments and walls for higher stellar masses, accompanied by an increase in the molecular-to-atomic gas-mass ratio. However, all trends with stellar mass are based on a low number of galaxies and need to be confirmed for a larger sample. The results for the molecular gas mass for a sample of 20 voids galaxies allowed us, for the first time, to make a statistical comparison to galaxies in filaments and walls. We do not find any significant differences of the molecular gas properties and the SFE, but we note that a larger sample is necessary to confirm this and be sensitive to subtle trends.

- We present a catalog of all CO (J=4-3 through J=13-12), [CI], and [NII] lines available from extragalactic spectra from the Herschel SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) archive combined with observations of the low-J CO lines from the literature and from the Arizona Radio Observatory. This work examines the relationships between L_FIR_, L'_CO_, and L_CO_/L_CO,1-0_. We also present a new method for estimating probability distribution functions from marginal signal-to-noise ratio Herschel FTS spectra, which takes into account the instrumental "ringing" and the resulting highly correlated nature of the spectra. The slopes of log(L_FIR_) versus log(L'_CO_) are linear for all mid- to high-J CO lines and slightly sublinear if restricted to (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs). The mid- to high-J CO luminosity relative to CO J=1-0 increases with increasing L_FIR_, indicating higher excitement of the molecular gas, although these ratios do not exceed ~180. For a given bin in L_FIR_, the luminosities relative to CO J=1-0 remain relatively flat from J=6-5 through J=13-12, across three orders of magnitude of L_FIR_. A single component theoretical photodissociation region (PDR) model cannot match these flat SLED shapes, although combinations of PDR models with mechanical heating added qualitatively match the shapes, indicating the need for further comprehensive modeling of the excitation processes of warm molecular gas in nearby galaxies.

- Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are distant, dusty galaxies undergoing star formation at prodigious rates. Recently there has been major progress in understanding the nature of the bright SMGs (i.e. S_850um_>5mJy). The samples for the fainter SMGs are small and are currently in a phase of being built up through identification studies. We study the molecular gas content in the two SMGs, SMMJ163555 and SMMJ163541, at redshifts z=1.034 and z=3.187 with unlensed submillimetre fluxes of 0.4mJy and 6.0mJy. Both SMGs are gravitationally lensed by the foreground cluster Abell 2218. We used the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer to obtain observations at 3mm of the lines CO(2-1) for SMMJ163555 and CO(3-2) for SMMJ163541. Additionally, we obtained CO(4-3) observations for the candidate z=4.048 SMMJ163556 with an unlensed submillimetre flux of 2.7mJy. Results: The CO(2-1) line was detected for SMMJ163555 at redshift 1.0313 with an integrated line intensity of 1.2+/-0.2Jy.km/s and a line width of 410+/-120km/s. From this a gas mass of 1.6x10^9^M_{sun}_ is derived and a star formation efficiency of 440L_{sun}_/M_{sun}_ estimated. The CO(3-2) line was detected for SMMJ163541 at redshift 3.1824, possibly with a second component at redshift 3.1883, with an integrated line intensity of 1.0+/-0.1Jy.km/s and a line width of 280+/-50km/s. From this a gas mass of 2.2x10^10^M_{sun}_ is derived and a star formation efficiency of 1000L_{sun}_/M_{sun}_ is estimated. For SMMJ163556, the CO(4-3) is undetected within the redshift range 4.035-4.082 down to a sensitivity of 0.15Jy.km/s.
