- Description:
- We present a giant molecular cloud (GMC) catalog of M33 (NGC598), containing 71 GMCs in total, based on wide-field and high-sensitivity CO(J=3-2) observations with a spatial resolution of 100pc using the ASTE 10m telescope. Employing archival optical data, we identify 75 young stellar groups (YSGs) from the excess of the surface stellar density, and estimate their ages by comparing with stellar evolution models. A spatial comparison among the GMCs, YSGs, and H II regions enable us to classify GMCs into four categories: Type A, showing no sign of massive star formation (SF); Type B, being associated only with H II regions; Type C, with both H II regions and <10Myr old YSGs; and Type D, with both H II regions and 10-30Myr YSGs. Out of 65 GMCs (discarding those at the edges of the observed fields), 1 (1%), 13 (20%), 29 (45%), and 22 (34%) are Types A, B, C, and D, respectively. We interpret these categories as stages in a GMC evolutionary sequence. Assuming that the timescale for each evolutionary stage is proportional to the number of GMCs, the lifetime of a GMC with a mass >10^5^M_{sun}_ is estimated to be 20-40Myr. In addition, we find that the dense gas fraction as traced by the CO(J=3-2)/CO(J=1-0) ratio is enhanced around SF regions. This confirms a scenario where dense gas is preferentially formed around previously generated stars, and will be the fuel for the next stellar generation. In this way, massive SF gradually propagates in a GMC until gas is exhausted.

- Description:
- The survey for DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTiNGS) has identified hundreds of candidate dust-producing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in several nearby metal-poor galaxies. We have obtained multi-epoch follow-up observations for these candidates with the Spitzer Space Telescope and measured their infrared (IR) light curves. This has allowed us to confirm their AGB nature and investigate pulsation behavior at very low metallicity. We have obtained high-confidence pulsation periods for 88 sources in seven galaxies. We have confirmed DUSTiNGS variable star candidates with a 20% success rate and determined the pulsation properties of 19 sources already identified as thermally pulsing AGB stars. We find that the AGB pulsation properties are similar in all galaxies surveyed here, with no discernible difference between the DUSTiNGS galaxies (down to 1.4% solar metallicity; [Fe/H]=-1.85) and the far more metal-rich Magellanic Clouds (up to 50% solar metallicity; [Fe/H]=-0.38). These results strengthen the link between dust production and pulsation in AGB stars and establish the IR period-luminosity relation as a reliable tool (+/-4%) for determining distances to galaxies, regardless of metallicity.

- Description:
- The dust-to-stellar mass ratio (M_dust_/M*) is a crucial yet poorly constrained quantity to understand the complex physical processes involved in the production of dust, metals and stars in galaxy evolution. In this work we explore trends of M_dust_/M* with different physica parameters using observations of 300 massive, dusty star-forming galaxies detected with ALMA up to z~5. Additionally, we interpret our findings with different models of dusty galaxy formation. We find that M_dust_/M* evolves with redshift, stellar mass, specific star formation rate and integrated dust size, differently for main sequence and starburst galaxies. In both galaxy populations M_dust_/M* increases until z~2 followed by a roughly flat trend towards higher redshifts, suggesting efficient dust growth in the distant universe. We confirm that the inverse relation between M_dust_/M* and M* holds up to z~5 and can be interpreted as an evolutionary transition from early to late starburst phases. We demonstrate that M_dust_/M* in starbursts reflects the increase in molecular gas fraction with redshift, and attains the highest values for sources with the most compact dusty star-formation. The state-of-the-art cosmological simulations that include self-consistent dust growth, broadly reproduce the evolution of M_dust_/M* in main sequence galaxies, but underestimate it in starbursts. The latter is found to be linked to lower gas-phase metallicities and longer dust growth timescales relative to observations. Phenomenological models based on the main-sequence/starburst dichotomy and analytical models that include recipes for rapid metal enrichment are consistent with our observations. Therefore, our results strongly suggest that high M_dust_/M* is due to rapid dust grain growth in metal enriched interstellar medium. This work highlights multifold benefits of using M_dust_/M* as a diagnostic tool for: (1) disentangling main sequence and starburst galaxies up to z~5; (2) probing the evolutionary phase of massive objects; and (3) refining the treatment of the dust life cycle in simulations.

- Dusty star-forming galaxies with LABOCA 870um obs.

- CDS
- Description:
- We present images obtained with LABOCA of a sample of 22 galaxies selected via their red Herschel SPIRE colors. We aim to see if these luminous, rare, and distant galaxies are signposting dense regions in the early universe. Our 870{mu}m survey covers an area of ~1deg^2^ down to an average rms of 3.9mJy/beam, with our five deepest maps going 2x deeper still. We catalog 86 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) around our "signposts," detected above a significance of 3.5{sigma}. This implies a 100+/-30% overdensity of S_870_>8.5mJy (or L_FIR_=6.7x10^12^-2.9x10^13^L_{sun}_) DSFGs, excluding our signposts, when comparing our number counts to those in "blank fields." Thus, we are 99.93% confident that our signposts are pinpointing overdense regions in the universe, and 95% [50%] confident that these regions are overdense by a factor of at least >=1.5x[2x]. Using template spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and SPIRE/LABOCA photometry, we derive a median photometric redshift of z=3.2+/-0.2 for our signposts, with an inter-quartile range of z=2.8-3.6, somewhat higher than expected for 850{mu}m selected galaxies. We constrain the DSFGs that are likely responsible for this overdensity to within |{delta}_z_|<=0.65 of their respective signposts. These "associated" DSFGs are radially distributed within (physical) distances of 1.6+/-0.5Mpc from their signposts, have median star formation rates (SFRs) of ~(1.0+/-0.2)x10^3^M_{sun}_/yr (for a Salpeter stellar initial mass function) and median gas reservoirs of ~1.7x10^11^M_{sun}_. These candidate protoclusters have average total SFRs of at least ~(2.3+/-0.5)x10^3^M_{sun}_/yr and space densities of 9x10^-7^Mpc^-3^, consistent with the idea that their constituents may evolve to become massive early-type galaxies in the centers of the rich galaxy clusters we see today.

- Description:
- The relationships between atomic and molecular hydrogen and dust of various sizes in extragalactic star-forming regions are considered, based on observational data from the Spitzer and Herschel infrared space telescopes, the Very Large Array (atomic hydrogen emission) and IRAM (CO emission). The source sample consists of approximately 300 star-forming regions in 11 nearby galaxies. Aperture photometry has been applied to measure the fluxes in eight infrared bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8, 24, 70, 100, and 160um), the atomic hydrogen 21 cm line, and CO (2-1) line. The parameters of the dust in the starforming regions were determined via synthetic-spectra fitting, such as the total dust mass, the fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), etc. Comparison of the observed fluxes with the measured parameters shows that the relationships between atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen, and dust are different in low- and high-metallicity regions. Low-metallicity regions contain more atomic gas, but less molecular gas and dust, including PAHs. The mass of dust constitutes about 1% of the mass of molecular gas in all regions considered. Fluxes produced by atomic and molecular gas do not correlate with the parameters of the stellar radiation, whereas the dust fluxes grow with increasing mean intensity of stellar radiation and the fraction of enhanced stellar radiation. The ratio of the fluxes at 8 and 24um, which characterizes the PAH content, decreases with increasing intensity of the stellar radiation, possibly indicating evolutionary variations of the PAH content. The results confirm that the contribution of the 24um emission to the total IR luminosity of extragalactic star-forming regions does not depend on the metallicity.

- Description:
- Far-infrared images and photometry are presented for 201 Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies [LIRGs: log(L_IR_/L_{sun}_)=11.00-11.99, ULIRGs: log(L_IR_/L_{sun}_)=12.00-12.99], in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), based on observations with the Herschel Space Observatory Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) instruments. The image atlas displays each GOALS target in the three PACS bands (70, 100, and 160{mu}m) and the three SPIRE bands (250, 350, and 500{mu}m), optimized to reveal structures at both high and low surface brightness levels, with images scaled to simplify comparison of structures in the same physical areas of ~100x100kpc^2^. Flux densities of companion galaxies in merging systems are provided where possible, depending on their angular separation and the spatial resolution in each passband, along with integrated system fluxes (sum of components). This data set constitutes the imaging and photometric component of the GOALS Herschel OT1 observing program, and is complementary to atlases presented for the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory. Collectively, these data will enable a wide range of detailed studies of active galactic nucleus and starburst activity within the most luminous infrared galaxies in the local universe.

- Description:
- We present the first results from a 1.1mm confusion-limited map of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We imaged 270arcmin^2^ field to a 1{sigma} depth of 0.48-0.73mJy/beam, making this one of the deepest blank-field surveys at mm-wavelengths ever achieved. Although by traditional standards our GOODS-S map is extremely confused due to a sea of faint underlying sources, we demonstrate through simulations that our source identification and number counts analyses are robust, and the techniques discussed in this paper are relevant for other deeply confused surveys. We find a total of 41 dusty starburst galaxies with signal-to-noise ratios S/N>=3.5 within this uniformly covered region, where only two are expected to be false detections, and an additional seven robust source candidates located in the noisier (1{sigma}~1mJy/beam) outer region of the map.

- Description:
- Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we report high angular-resolution observations of the redshift z=3.63 galaxy H-ATLAS J083051.0+013224 (G09v1.97), one of the most luminous strongly lensed galaxies discovered by the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We present 0.2"-0.4" resolution images of the rest-frame 188 and 419um dust continuum and the CO(6-5), H_2_O(2_11_-2_02_), and Jup=2H_2_O^+^ line emission. We also report the detection of H_2_^18^O(2_11_-2_02_) in this source. The dust continuum and molecular gas emission are resolved into a nearly complete ~1.5" diameter Einstein ring plus a weaker image in the center, which is caused by a special dual deflector lensing configuration. The observed line profiles of the CO(6-5), H_2_O(2_11_-2_02_), and Jup=2H_2_O^+^ lines are strikingly similar. In the source plane, we reconstruct the dust continuum images and the spectral cubes of the CO, H_2_O, and H_2_O^+^ line emission at sub-kiloparsec scales. The reconstructed dust emission in the source plane is dominated by a compact disk with an effective radius of 0.7+/-0.1kpc plus an overlapping extended disk with a radius twice as large. While the average magnification for the dust continuum is {mu}~10-11, the magnification of the line emission varies from 5 to 22 across different velocity components. The line emission of CO(6-5), H_2_O(2_11_-2_02_), and H_2_O^+^ have similar spatial and kinematic distributions. The molecular gas and dust content reveal that G09v1.97 is a gas-rich major merger in its pre-coalescence phase, with a total molecular gas mass of ~10^11^M_{sun}_. Both of the merging companions are intrinsically ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with infrared luminosities LIR reaching 4x10^12^L_{sun}_, and the total LIR of G09v1.97 is (1.4+/-0.7)x10^13^L_{sun}_. The approaching southern galaxy (dominating from V=-400 to -150km/s relative to the systemic velocity) shows no obvious kinematic structure with a semi-major half-light radius of a_s_=0.4kpc, while the receding galaxy (0 to 350km/s) resembles an a_s_=1.2kpc rotating disk. The two galaxies are separated by a projected distance of 1.3kpc, bridged by weak line emission (-150 to 0km/s) that is co-spatially located with the cold dust emission peak, suggesting a large amount of cold interstellar medium (ISM) in the interacting region. As one of the most luminous star-forming dusty high-redshift galaxies, G09v1.97 is an exceptional source for understanding the ISM in gas-rich starbursting major merging systems at high redshift.

- Description:
- We present a sample of 80 candidate strongly lensed galaxies with flux density above 100mJy at 500{mu}m extracted from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey, over an area of 600deg^2^. Available imaging and spectroscopic data allow us to confirm the strong lensing in 20 cases and to reject it in one case. For other eight objects, the lensing scenario is strongly supported by the presence of two sources along the same line of sight with distinct photometric redshifts. The remaining objects await more follow-up observations to confirm their nature. The lenses and the background sources have median redshifts z_L_=0.6 and z_S_=2.5, respectively, and are observed out to z_L_=1.2 and z_S_=4.2. We measure the number counts of candidate lensed galaxies at 500{mu}m and compare them with theoretical predictions, finding a good agreement for a maximum magnification of the background sources in the range 10-20. These values are consistent with the magnification factors derived from the lens modelling of individual systems. The catalogue presented here provides sub-mm bright targets for follow-up observations aimed at exploiting gravitational lensing, to study with unprecedented details the morphological and dynamical properties of dusty star-forming regions in z>=1.5 galaxies.

- H-ATLAS search for strongly lensed galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/749/65

- Description:
- While the selection of strongly lensed galaxies (SLGs) with 500{mu}m flux density S_500_>100mJy has proven to be rather straightforward, for many applications it is important to analyze samples larger than the ones obtained when confining ourselves to such a bright limit. Moreover, only by probing to fainter flux densities is it possible to exploit strong lensing to investigate the bulk of the high-z star-forming galaxy population. We describe HALOS (the Herschel-ATLAS Lensed Objects Selection), a method for efficiently selecting fainter candidate SLGs, reaching a surface density of =~1.5-2/deg^2^, i.e., a factor of about 4-6 higher than that at the 100mJy flux limit. HALOS will allow the selection of up to ~1000 candidate SLGs (with amplifications {mu}>~2) over the full H-ATLAS survey area. Applying HALOS to the H-ATLAS Science Demonstration Phase field (=~14.4deg^2^) we find 31 candidate SLGs, whose candidate lenses are identified in the VIKING near-infrared catalog. Using the available information on candidate sources and candidate lenses we tentatively estimate a =~72% purity of the sample. As expected, the purity decreases with decreasing flux density of the sources and with increasing angular separation between candidate sources and lenses. The redshift distribution of the candidate lensed sources is close to that reported for most previous surveys for lensed galaxies, while that of candidate lenses extends to redshifts substantially higher than found in the other surveys. The counts of candidate SLGs are also in good agreement with model predictions. Even though a key ingredient of the method is the deep near-infrared VIKING photometry, we show that H-ATLAS data alone allow the selection of a similarly deep sample of candidate SLGs with an efficiency close to 50%; a slightly lower surface density (=~ 1.45/deg2) can be reached with a ~70% efficiency.
