- Using an [OIII]{lambda}5007 on-band/off-band filter technique, we identify 109 planetary nebulae (PNe) candidates in the edge-on spiral galaxy M 82, using the FOCAS instrument at the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. The use of ancillary high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys H{alpha} imaging aided in confirming these candidates, helping to discriminate PNe from contaminants such as supernova remnants and compact HII regions. Once identified, these PNe reveal a great deal about the host galaxy; our analysis covers kinematics, stellar distribution, and distance determination. Radial velocities were determined for 94 of these PNe using a method of slitless spectroscopy, from which we obtain a clear picture of the galaxy's rotation.

- We present optical and near-infrared photometry of 45 clusters of galaxies at 0.1<z<1.3. Galaxy catalogs in each cluster were defined at the longest wavelength available, generally the K band, down to approximately 2mag below M*. We include finding chart images of the band used for catalog definition. The photometry has been used in previously published papers to examine the origin and evolution of galaxies in distant clusters. Beginning in 1991, we sought to make use of the advent of relatively large format near-IR detectors to study the galaxy populations of distant clusters. We collected imaging data in both the near-IR and the optical on a large sample of clusters drawn from several samples. These data were analyzed and detailed results were presented on the evolution of early-type galaxies at moderate redshifts in Stanford, Eisenhardt, & Dickinson (1995ApJ...450..512S, 1998ApJ...492..461S), on the evolution of the K-band luminosity function in De Propris et al. (1999AJ....118..719D), on the Butcher-Oemler effect in K-selected galaxy samples in De Propris et al. (2003, ApJ, submitted), and on the evolution of early-type galaxies in high-redshift clusters in Holden et al. (2003, ApJ, in press). So far the photometry for these various studies has been published for only two clusters, Abell 370 and Abell 851 in Stanford et al. (1995ApJ...450..512S). In this paper, we present the photometry on the other 43 clusters used in our published work on distant clusters.

- We present an analysis of the relative frequencies of different supernova (SN) types in spirals with various morphologies and in barred or unbarred galaxies. We use a well-defined and homogeneous sample of spiral host galaxies of 692 SNe from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in different stages of galaxy-galaxy interaction and activity classes of nucleus. We propose that the underlying mechanisms shaping the number ratios of SNe types can be interpreted within the framework of interaction-induced star formation, in addition to the known relations between morphologies and stellar populations. We find a strong trend in behaviour of the N_Ia_/N_CC_ ratio depending on host morphology, such that early spirals include more Type Ia SNe. The N_Ibc_/N_II_ ratio is higher in a broad bin of early-type hosts. The N_Ia_/N_CC_ ratio is nearly constant when changing from normal, perturbed to interacting galaxies, then declines in merging galaxies, whereas it jumps to the highest value in post-merging/remnant galaxies. In contrast, the N_Ibc_/N_II_ ratio jumps to the highest value in merging galaxies and slightly declines in post-merging/remnant subsample. The interpretation is that the star formation rates and morphologies of galaxies, which are strongly affected in the final stages of interaction, have an impact on the number ratios of SNe types. The N_Ia_/N_CC_ (N_Ibc_/N_II_) ratio increases (decreases) from star-forming to active galactic nuclei (AGN) classes of galaxies. These variations are consistent with the scenario of an interaction-triggered starburst evolving into AGN during the later stages of interaction, accompanied with the change of star formation and transformation of the galaxy morphology into an earlier type.

- We present the first three-dimensional internal motions for individual stars in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. By combining first epoch Hubble Space Telescope observations and second epoch Gaia Data Release 2 positions we measured the proper motions of 149 sources in the direction of Draco. We determined the line-of-sight velocities of a sub-sample of 81 red giant branch stars using medium resolution spectra acquired with the DEIMOS spectrograph at the Keck II telescope. Altogether this resulted in a final sample of 45 members of Draco with high-precision and accurate 3D motions, which we publish as a table in this paper. With this high-quality dataset we determined the velocity dispersions at a projected distance of ~120pc from the centre of Draco to be sigma_R_=11.0^+2.1^_-1.5_km/s, sigma_T_=9.9^+2.3^_-3.1_km/s and sigma_LOS_=9.0^+1.1^_-1.1_ km/s in the projected radial, tangential and line-of-sight directions. This results in a velocity anisotropy beta=0.25^+0.47^_-1.38_ at r>120pc. Tighter constraints can be obtained using the spherical Jeans equations and assuming constant anisotropy and NFW mass profiles, as well as that the 3D velocity dispersion should be lower than ~1/3 of the escape velocity of the system. In this case, we constrain the maximum circular velocity V_max_ of Draco to be in the range of 10.2-17.0km/s. The corresponding mass range is in good agreement with previous estimates based on line-of-sight velocities only. Our Jeans modelling supports the case for a cuspy dark matter profile in this galaxy. Firmer conclusions may be drawn by applying more sophisticated models on this dataset and with upcoming data releases.

- We investigate two-dimensional image decomposition of nearby, morphologically selected early-type galaxies (ETGs). We are motivated by recent observational evidence of significant size growth of quiescent galaxies and theoretical development advocating a two-phase formation scenario for ETGs. We find that a significant fraction of nearby ETGs show changes in isophotal shape that require multi-component models. The characteristic sizes of the inner and outer component are ~3 and ~15kpc. The inner component lies on the mass-size relation of ETGs at z~0.25-0.75, while the outer component tends to be more elliptical and hints at a stochastic buildup process. We find real physical differences between single- and double-component ETGs, with double-component galaxies being younger and more metal-rich. The fraction of double-component ETGs increases with increasing {sigma} and decreases in denser environments. We hypothesize that double-component systems were able to accrete gas and small galaxies until later times, boosting their central densities, building up their outer parts, and lowering their typical central ages. In contrast, the oldest galaxies, perhaps due to residing in richer environments, have no remaining hints of their last accretion episode.

- We present the first spectroscopic analysis of the faint and compact stellar system Draco II (Dra II, M_V_=-2.9+/-0.8,r_h_=19^+8^_-6_pc), recently discovered in the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System 1 3{PI} survey. The observations, conducted with DEIMOS on the Keck II telescope, establish some of its basic characteristics: the velocity data reveal a narrow peak with nine member stars at a systemic heliocentric velocity <v_r_>=-347.6^+1.7^_-1.8_km/s, thereby confirming Dra II is a satellite of the Milky Way; we infer a velocity dispersion with {sigma}_vr_=2.9+/-2.1km/s (<8.4km/s at the 95 per cent confidence level), which implie log_10_(M_1/2_)-5.5^+0.4^_-0.6_ and log_10_((M/L_)1/2_)=2.7^+0.5^_-0.8_, in Solar units; furthermore, very weak calcium triplet lines in the spectra of the high signal-to-noise member stars imply [Fe/H]<-2.1, whilst variations in the line strengths of two stars with similar colours and magnitudes suggest a metallicity spread in Dra II. These new data cannot clearly discriminate whether Draco II is a star cluster or amongst the faintest, most compact, and closest dwarf galaxies. However, the sum of the three - individually inconclusive - pieces of evidence presented here seems to favour the dwarf galaxy interpretation.

- The three-dimensional (3D) shape of a galaxy inevitably is tied to how it has formed and evolved and to its dark matter halo. Local extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs; defined as having an average gas-phase metallicity <0.1 solar) are important objects for understanding galaxy evolution largely because they appear to be caught in the act of accreting gas from the cosmic web, and their 3D shape may reflect this. Here, we report on the 3D shape of XMPs as inferred from their observed projected minor-to-major axial ratios using a hierarchical Bayesian inference model, which determines the likely shape and orientation of each galaxy, while simultaneously inferring the average shape and dispersion. We selected a sample of 149 XMPs and divided it into three subsamples according to physical size and found that (1) the stellar component of XMPs of all sizes tends to be triaxial, with an intermediate axis ~0.7 times the longest axis and that (2) smaller XMPs tend to be relatively thicker, with the shortest axis going from ~0.15 times the longest axis for the large galaxies to ~0.4 for the small galaxies. We provide the inferred 3D shape and inclination of the individual XMPs in electronic format. We show that our results for the intermediate axis are not clouded by a selection effect against face-on XMPs. We discuss how an intermediate axis significantly smaller than the longest axis may be produced by several mechanisms, including lopsided gas accretion, non-axisymmetric star formation, or coupling with an elongated dark matter halo. Large relative thickness may reflect slow rotation, stellar feedback, or recent gas accretion.

- We present B, V time-series photometry of Andromeda XIX (And XIX), the most extended (half-light radius of 6.2') of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal companions, which we observed with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We surveyed a 23'x23' area centered on And XIX and present the deepest color-magnitude diagram (CMD) ever obtained for this galaxy, reaching, at V~26.3mag, about one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The CMD shows a prominent and slightly widened red giant branch, along with a predominantly red HB, which extends to the blue to significantly populate the classical instability strip. We have identified 39 pulsating variable stars, of which 31 are of RR Lyrae type and 8 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). Twelve of the RR Lyrae variables and three of the ACs are located within And XIX's half light radius. The average period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (<P_ab_>{=}0.62days, {sigma}=0.03days) and the period-amplitude diagram qualify And XIX as an Oosterhoff-Intermediate system. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars (<V(RR)>=25.34mag, {sigma}=0.10mag), we determine a distance modulus of (m-M)_0_=24.52+/-0.23mag in a scale where the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is 18.5+/-0.1mag. The ACs follow a well-defined Period-Wesenheit (PW) relation that appears to be in very good agreement with the PW relationship defined by the ACs in the LMC.

- The Spitzer Space Telescope has identified a population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 that may play an important role in the evolution of massive galaxies. We measure the stellar masses (M_*_) of two populations of Spitzer-selected ULIRGs that have extremely red R-[24] colors (dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) and compare our results with submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs). One set of 39 DOGs has a local maximum in their mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest frame 1.6um associated with stellar emission ("bump DOGs"), while the other set of 51 DOGs have power-law mid-IR SEDs that are typical of obscured active galactic nuclei ("power-law DOGs"). We measure M_*_ by applying Charlot & Bruzual (1991ApJ...367..126C) stellar population synthesis models to broadband photometry in the rest-frame ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared of each of these populations.
