- A rich spectroscopic census of members of the local massive cluster A2029 includes 1215 members of A2029 and its two infalling groups, A2033 and the Southern Infalling Group. The two infalling groups are identified in spectroscopic, X-ray, and weak-lensing maps. We identify active galactic nuclei (AGNs), star-forming galaxies, E+A galaxies, and quiescent galaxies based on the spectroscopy. The fractions of AGN and post-starburst E+A galaxies in A2029 are similar to those of other clusters. We derive the stellar mass (M_*_)-metallicity relation of A2029 based on 227 star-forming members; A2029 members within 10^9^M_{sun}_<M_*_<10^9.5^M_{sun}_ are more metal-rich than Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies within the same mass range. We utilize the spectroscopic index D_n_4000, a strong age indicator, to trace past and future evolution of the A2029 system. The median D_n_4000 of the members decreases as the projected clustercentric distance increases for all three subsystems. The D_n_4000-M_*_ relations of the members in A2029 and its two infalling groups differ significantly, indicating the importance of stochastic effects for understanding the evolution of cluster galaxy populations.

- An H-alpha survey, using a focal reducer and narrow-band interference filters, has resulted in the detection of nearly a thousand HII regions in M31. The catalog gives their positions, dimensions, and surface brightnesses. The surface brightnesses are on an absolute scale; the photographic measures were calibrated by using photoelectric measures from two different sources. The detection limit reached corresponds to an emission measure of 40cm^-6^pc at a temperature of 10000K.

- Our current understanding of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) comes predominantly from studies at frequencies of 5GHz and below. With the recent completion of the Australia Telescope 20GHz (AT20G) survey, we can now gain insight into the high-frequency radio properties of AGN. This paper presents supplementary information on the AT20G sources in the form of optical counterparts and redshifts. Optical counterparts were identified using the SuperCOSMOS data base and redshifts were found from either the 6dF Galaxy Survey or the literature. We also report 144 new redshifts. For AT20G sources outside the Galactic plane, 78.5% have optical identifications and 30.9% have redshift information. The optical identification rate also increases with increasing flux density. Targets which had optical spectra available were examined to obtain a spectral classification.

- The traditional knowledge of the mechanisms that caused the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies (ETG) in a hierarchical universe was challenged by the unexpected finding by ATLAS^3D^ that 86% of the ETGs show signs of a fast-rotating disk at their interior. This implies a common origin of most spiral galaxies, followed by a quenching phase, while only a minority of the most massive systems are slow rotators and were likely to be the products of merger events. Our aim is to improve our knowledge on the content and distribution of ionized hydrogen and their usage to form stars in a representative sample of ETGs for which the kinematics and detailed morphological classification were known from ATLAS^3D^. Methods. Using narrow-band filters centered on the redshifted H{alpha} line along with a broad-band (r-Gunn) filter to recover the stellar continuum, we observed or collected existing imaging observations for 147 ETGs (including members of the Virgo cluster) that are representative of the whole ATLAS3D survey. Fifty-five ETGs (37%) were detected in the H{alpha} line above our detection threshold, (EW(H{alpha})<=-1{AA}), and 21 harbor a strong source (EW(H{alpha})<=-5{AA}). The strong H{alpha} emitters appear associated with mostly low-mass (M*~10^10^M_{sun}_) S0 galaxies that contain conspicuous stellar and gaseous discs. These harbor significant star formation at their interior, including their nuclei. The weak H{alpha} emitters are almost one order of magnitude more massive, contain gas-poor discs and harbor an AGN at their centers. Their emissivity is dominated by [NII] and does not imply star formation. The 92 undetected ETGs constitute the majority in our sample and are gas-free systems that lack a disc and exhibit passive spectra even in their nuclei. These pieces of evidence reinforce the conclusion made previously that the evolution of ETGs followed the secular channel for the less massive systems and the dry merging channel for the most massive galaxies at the center of clusters of galaxies.

- There are many candidate sites of the r-process: core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe; including rare magnetorotational core-collapse supernovae), neutron star mergers (NSMs), and neutron star/black hole mergers. The chemical enrichment of galaxies --specifically dwarf galaxies-- helps distinguish between these sources based on the continual build-up of r-process elements. This technique can distinguish between the r-process candidate sites by the clearest observational difference --how quickly these events occur after the stars are created. The existence of several nearby dwarf galaxies allows us to measure robust chemical abundances for galaxies with different star formation histories. Dwarf galaxies are especially useful because simple chemical evolution models can be used to determine the sources of r-process material. We have measured the r-process element barium with Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy. We present the largest sample of barium abundances (almost 250 stars) in dwarf galaxies ever assembled. We measure [Ba/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] in this sample and compare with existing [{alpha}/Fe] measurements. We have found that a large contribution of barium needs to occur at more delayed timescales than CCSNe in order to explain our observed abundances, namely the significantly more positive trend of the r-process component of [Ba/Fe] versus [Fe/H] seen for [Fe/H]<~-1.6 when compared to the [Mg/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trend. We conclude that NSMs are the most likely source of r-process enrichment in dwarf galaxies at early times.

- This study uses r-band images from the Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR8) to study bars in lenticular (S0) galaxies in one of the nearest rich cluster environments, the Coma cluster. We develop techniques for bar detection and assess their success when applied to SDSS image data. To detect and characterize bars, we perform 2D bulge+disc+bar light decompositions of galaxy images with galfit. Using a sample of artificial galaxy images, we determine the faintest magnitude at which bars can be successfully measured at the depth and resolution of SDSS. We perform detailed decompositions of 83 S0 galaxies in Coma, 64 from a central sample, and 19 from a cluster outskirt sample. For the central sample, the S0 bar fraction is 72^+5^_-6_%. This value is significantly higher than that obtained using an ellipse-fitting method for bar detection, 48^+6^_-6_%. At a fixed luminosity, barred S0s are redder in g-r colour than unbarred S0s by 0.02mag. The frequency and strength of bars increase towards fainter luminosities. Neither central metallicity nor stellar age distributions differ significantly between barred and unbarred S0s. There is an increase in the bar fraction towards the cluster core, but this is at a low significance level. Bars have at most a weak correlation with cluster-centric radius.

- Bar-induced gas inflows towards galaxy centres are recognised as a key agent for the secular evolution of galaxies. One immediate consequence of this inflow is the accumulation of gas in the centre of galaxies where it can form stars and alter the chemical and physical properties. Our aim is to study whether the properties of the ionised gas in the central parts of barred galaxies are altered by the presence of a bar and whether the change in central properties is related to bar and/or parent galaxy properties. We use a sample of nearby face-on disc galaxies with available SDSS spectra, morphological decomposition, and information on the stellar population of their bulges, to measure the internal Balmer extinction from the H{alpha} to H{beta} line ratio, star formation rate, and relevant line ratios to diagnose chemical abundances and gas density.

- Smooth X-ray morphology and non-detection of a radio source at the center of A2589 indicate that it is a typical case of a well-relaxed regular galaxy cluster. In this paper, we present a multicolor photometry for A2589 (z=0.0414) with 15 intermediate bands in the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) system which covers an optical wavelength range from 3000{AA} to 10000{AA}. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for more than 5000 sources are achieved down to V~20mag in about a 1{deg}^2^ field. A2589 has also been covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in photometric mode only. A cross-identification of the BATC-detected galaxies with the SDSS photometric catalog yields 1199 galaxies brighter than i=19.5mag, among which 68 member galaxies with known spectroscopic redshifts are found. After combining the SDSS five-band photometric data and the BATC SEDs, photometric redshift is applied to these galaxies to select faint member galaxies. The color-magnitude relation is taken as a further restriction of early-type cluster galaxies. As a result, 106 galaxies are newly selected as member galaxies.

- We introduce a Bayesian method for fitting faint, resolved stellar spectra in order to obtain simultaneous estimates of redshift and stellar-atmospheric parameters. We apply the method to thousands of spectra - covering 5160-5280{AA} at resolution R~20000 - that we have acquired with the MMT/Hectochelle fibre spectrograph for red giant and horizontal branch candidates along the line of sight to the Milky Way's dwarf spheroidal satellite in Draco. The observed stars subtend an area of ~4deg^2^, extending ~3 times beyond Draco's nominal 'tidal' radius. For each spectrum, we tabulate the first four moments - central value, variance, skewness and kurtosis - of posterior probability distribution functions representing estimates of the following physical parameters: line-of-sight velocity (v_los_), effective temperature (T_eff_), surface gravity (logg) and metallicity ([Fe/H]). After rejecting low-quality measurements, we retain a new sample consisting of 2813 independent observations of 1565 unique stars, including 1879 observations for 631 stars with (as many as 13) repeat observations. Parameter estimates have median random errors of v_los_=0.88km/s, T_eff_=162K, {sigma}logg=0.37dex and {sigma}[Fe/H]=0.20dex. Our estimates of physical parameters distinguish ~470 likely Draco members from interlopers in the Galactic foreground.
