- The study of the evolution of star-forming galaxies requires the determination of accurate kinematics and scaling relations out to high redshift. In this paper we select a sample of 18 galaxies at z~1, observed in the H{alpha} emission-line with KMOS, to derive accurate kinematics using a novel 3D analysis technique. We use the new code 3DBarolo that models the galaxy emission directly in the 3D observational space, without the need to extract kinematic maps. This technique's major advantage is that it is not affected by beam smearing and thus it enables the determination of rotation velocity and intrinsic velocity dispersion, even at low spatial resolution. We find that: 1) the rotation curves of these z~1 galaxies rise very steeply within few kiloparsecs and remain flat out to the outermost radius and 2) the H{alpha} velocity dispersions are low, ranging from 15 to 40km/s, which leads to V/{sigma}=3-10. These characteristics are similar to those of disc galaxies in the local Universe. Finally, we also report no significant evolution of the stellar-mass Tully-Fisher relation. Our results show that disc galaxies are kinematically mature and rotation-dominated already at z~1.

- We created and analysed a large sample of local (z<0.4) post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. In the colour-mass diagram, the PSB sample is clearly concentrated towards the region between the red and the blue cloud, in agreement with the idea that PSB galaxies represent the transitioning phase between actively and passively evolving galaxies. The relative frequency of distorted PSB galaxies is at least 57%, significantly higher than in a comparison sample. The search for active galactic nuclei (AGN) based on conventional selection criteria in the radio and MIR results in a low AGN fraction of 2-3%. We confirm an MIR excess in the mean SED of the PSB galaxy sample that may indicate hidden AGNs, though other sources are also possible.

A matched filter detection algorithm identifies 444 cluster candidates in the range 0.2<~z<~1.2. The full catalog is presented along with the results from a follow-up spectroscopic survey.

- The K20 survey is an ESO VLT optical and near-infrared spectroscopic survey aimed at obtaining spectral information and redshifts of a complete sample of about 550 objects to K_s_<=20.0 over two independent fields with a total area of 52arcmin^2^. In this paper we discuss the scientific motivation of such a survey, we describe the photometric and spectroscopic properties of the sample, and we release the K_s_-band photometric catalog. Extensive simulations showed that the sample is photometrically highly complete to K_s_=20. The observed galaxy counts and the R-K_s_ color distribution are consistent with literature results. We observed spectroscopically 94% of the sample, reaching a spectroscopic redshift identification completeness of 92% to K_s_<=20.0 for the observed targets, and of 87% for the whole sample (i.e. counting also the unobserved targets). Deep spectroscopy was complemented with multi-band deep imaging in order to derive tested and reliable photometric redshifts for the galaxies lacking of spectroscopic redshifts. The results show a very good agreement between the spectroscopic and the photometric redshifts with <z_(spe)_-z_(phot)_>=0.01 and with a dispersion of {sigma}_({Delta}z)_=0.09. Using both the spectroscopic and the photometric redshifts, we reached an overall redshift completeness of about 98%. The size of the sample, the redshift completeness, the availability of high quality photometric redshifts and multicolor spectral energy distributions make the K20 survey database one of the most complete samples available to date for constraining the currently competing scenarios of galaxy formation and for a variety of other galaxy evolution studies.

- The K20 survey is a near infrared-selected, deep (Ks<20) redshift survey targeting galaxies in two independent regions of the sky, the Chandra Deep Field South and the field around the quasar 0055-2659, for a total area of 52arcmin^2^. The total Ks-selected sample includes 545 objects. Low-resolution (R~300-600) optical spectra for 525 of them have been obtained with the FORS1/FORS2 spectrographs at the ESO/VLT, providing 501 spectroscopic identifications (including 12 type-1 AGN and 45 stars); consequently, we were able to measure redshifts and identify stars in 96% of the observed objects, whereas the spectroscopic completeness with respect to the total photometrically selected sample is 92% (501/545). The K20 survey is therefore the most complete spectroscopic survey of a near infrared-selected sample to date. The K20 survey contains 444 spectroscopically identified galaxies, covering a redshift range of 0.05<z<2.73, with a mean redshift <z>=0.75; excluding the 32 "low-quality" redshifts does not significantly change these values.

- In this paper we present preliminary spectroscopic results from a small-area faint K-excess (KX) survey, and compare KX selection against UVX selection. The aim of the KX method is to produce complete samples of QSOs that are flux-limited in the K band, in order to minimize any selection bias in samples of QSOs from the effects of reddening and extinction. Using the photometric catalogue of the ESO Imaging Survey Chandra Deep Field South (48arcmin^2^) we have identified compact objects with J-K colours redder than the stellar sequence that are brighter than K=19.5. We have obtained spectra of 33 candidates, using the LDSS++ spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). Amongst the 11 bluer candidates, with V-J<3, three are confirmed as QSOs. Identification of the 22 redder candidates with V-J>=3 is substantially incomplete, but so far no reddened QSOs have been found. Near-infrared spectroscopy will be more effective in identifying some of these targets. Only two UVX (U-B<-0.2) sources brighter than K=19.5 are found that are not also KX selected. These are both identified as galactic stars. Thus KX selection appears to select all UVX QSOs. The surface density of QSOs in the blue subsample (V-J<3) at K<=19.5 is 325^+136^_-177_{deg}^-2^. Because identification of the red subsample (V-J>=3) is substantially incomplete, the 2{sigma} upper limit on the density of reddened QSOs is large, <1150{deg}^-2^. As anticipated, at these faint magnitudes the KX sample includes several compact galaxies. Of the 14 with measured redshifts, there are roughly equal numbers of early- and late-type objects. Nearly all the early-type galaxies are found in a single structure at z=0.66.
