- We have measured velocity dispersions ({sigma}) for a sample of 36 galaxies with J<21.2 or M_r_<-20.6mag in MS 1054-03, a massive cluster of galaxies at z=0.83. Our data are of uniformly high quality down to our selection limit, our 16h exposures typically yielding errors of only {delta}({sigma})~10% for L* and fainter galaxies. By combining our measurements with data from the literature, we have 53 cluster galaxies with measured dispersions, and HST/ACS-derived sizes, colors and surface brightness. This sample is complete for the typical L^*^ galaxy at z~1, unlike most previous z~1 cluster samples which are complete only for the massive cluster members (>10^11^M_{sun}_). We find no evidence for a change in the tilt of the fundamental plane (FP).

- We present a comprehensive study of the velocity dispersion of the atomic (HI) and molecular (H_2_) gas components in the disks (R{<~}R_25_) of a sample of 12 nearby spiral galaxies with moderate inclinations. Our analysis is based on sensitive high-resolution data from the THINGS (atomic gas) and HERACLES (molecular gas) surveys. To obtain reliable measurements of the velocity dispersion, we stack regions several kiloparsecs in size, after accounting for intrinsic velocity shifts due to galactic rotation and large-scale motions. We stack using various parameters: the galactocentric distance, star formation rate surface density, HI surface density, H_2_ surface density, and total gas surface density. We fit single Gaussian components to the stacked spectra and measure median velocity dispersions for HI of 11.9+/-3.1km/s and for CO of 12.0+/-3.9km/s. The CO velocity dispersions are thus, surprisingly, very similar to the corresponding ones of HI, with an average ratio of {sigma}_HI_/{sigma}_CO_=1.0+/-0.2 irrespective of the stacking parameter. The measured CO velocity dispersions are significantly higher (factor of ~2) than the traditional picture of a cold molecular gas disk associated with star formation. The high dispersion implies an additional thick molecular gas disk (possibly as thick as the HI disk). Our finding is in agreement with recent sensitive measurements in individual edge-on and face-on galaxies and points toward the general existence of a thick disk of molecular gas, in addition to the well-known thin disk in nearby spiral galaxies.

- Pratton, Melott and McKee (1997ApJ...479L..15P) showed that the velocity field around clusters could generate an apparent distortion that appears as tangential structures or radial filaments. In the present paper we determine the parameters of the Peebles' model (1976ApJ...205..318P) describing infall of galaxies onto clusters with the aim of testing quantitatively the amplitude of this distortion. The distances are determined from the concept of sosie galaxies (Paturel, 1994A&A...289..711P) using 21 calibrators for which the distances were recently calculated from two independent Cepheid calibrations. We use both B and I-band magnitudes.

- For disc galaxies, a close relation exists between the distribution of light and the shape of the rotation curve. We quantify this relation by measuring the inner circular-velocity gradient d_R_V(0) for spiral and irregular galaxies with high-quality rotation curves. We find that d_R_V(0) correlates with the central surface brightness {mu}_0_ over more than two orders of magnitude in d_R_V(0) and four orders of magnitudes in {mu}_0_. This is a scaling relation for disc galaxies. It shows that the central stellar density of a galaxy closely relates to the inner shape of the potential well, also for low-luminosity and low-surface-brightness galaxies that are expected to be dominated by dark matter.

- High resolution Fabry-Perot data of six spiral galaxies are presented. Those data extend the previous sample of spiral galaxies studied with high resolution 3-D spectroscopy to earlier morphological types. All the galaxies in the sample have available HI data at 21cm from the VLA or Westerbork. Velocity fields are analyzed and H{alpha} rotation curves are computed and compared to HI curves. The kinematics of NGC 5055 central regions are looked at more closely. Its peculiar kinematics can be interpreted either as a bipolar outflow or as a counter-rotating disk, possibly hosting a 9+/-2x10^8^M_{sun}-compact object. Most of the H{alpha} rotation curves present a significantly steeper inner slope than their HI counterparts. The 21cm data thus seems affected by moderate to strong beam smearing. The beam smearing has an effect at higher scale-length/beam-width than previously thought (up to 20km/s at a ratio of 8.5).

- We present the results of a comprehensive Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxy Segue 1. We have obtained velocity measurements for 98.2% of the stars within 67pc (10', or 2.3 half-light radii) of the center of Segue 1 that have colors and magnitudes consistent with membership, down to a magnitude limit of r=21.7. Based on photometric, kinematic, and metallicity information, we identify 71 stars as probable Segue 1 members, including some as far out as 87pc. After correcting for the influence of binary stars using repeated velocity measurements, we determine a velocity dispersion of 3.7^+1.4^_-1.1_km/s. The mass within the half-light radius is 5.8^+8.2^_-3.1_x10^5^M_{sun}_. The stellar kinematics of Segue 1 require very high mass-to-light ratios unless the system is far from dynamical equilibrium, even if the period distribution of unresolved binary stars is skewed toward implausibly short periods. With a total luminosity less than that of a single bright red giant and a V-band mass-to-light ratio of 3400M_{sun}_/L_{sun}_, Segue 1 is the darkest galaxy currently known.

- We have measured vertical and radial stellar population gradients in NGC 891. We compare these gradients to those known for the Milky Way from studies of resolved stars. Optical spectroscopic measurements extend spatially from the disk midplane up to 2.6kpc in height and out to a radius of 12kpc on both sides of the galaxy. Data were acquired with {nabla}Pak, a variable-pitch fiber integral field unit (IFU) on the WIYN telescope. We describe the laboratory and on-sky performance of {nabla}Pak, as well as modifications to the standard observational and analysis procedures necessary to calibrate data taken with this unique IFU. {nabla}Pak has a mean throughput of 80% at 5500{AA}. To achieve an estimated precision of 10% in light-weighted mean age and metallicity, we define a set of spatial apertures in radius and height in which spectra are binned to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of ~20{AA}^-1^. We use spectral indices to measure age, metallicity, and abundance, indicating that NGC 891's stellar populations have 0.2<Z/Z_{sun}_<1 and +0.2dex {alpha}-enhancement on average. We find a clear transition from young (<3-5Gyr) to old (>7Gyr) stellar populations at 0.4kpc, roughly the scale height of the thin disk. We also find a slight trend toward younger populations at larger radii, consistent with flaring in an inside-out disk formation scenario. The vertical age gradient in NGC 891 is in remarkable qualitative agreement with a model for disk heating tuned to studies of the Milk Way's solar cylinder.

- To analyze the vertical structure of edge-on galaxies, we have used images of a large uniform sample of flat galaxies that have been taken during the 2MASS all-sky survey. The photometric parameters, such as the radial scale length, the vertical scale height, and the deprojected central surface brightness of galactic disks have been obtained. We find a strong correlation between the central surface brightness and the ratio of the vertical scale height to the vertical scale length: the thinner the galaxy, the lower the central surface brightness of its disk. The vertical scale height does not increase systematically with the distance from the galaxy center in the frames of this sample.

- Strong H{alpha} emitters (HAEs) dominate the z~4 Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) population. We have identified local analogs of these HAEs using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. At z<0.4, only 0.04% of the galaxies are classified as HAEs with H{alpha} equivalent widths (>~500{AA}) comparable to that of z~4 HAEs. Local HAEs have lower stellar mass and lower ultraviolet (UV) luminosity than z~4 HAEs, yet the H{alpha}-to-UV luminosity ratio, as well as their specific star formation rate, is consistent with that of z~4 HAEs, indicating that they are scaled-down versions of high-z star-forming galaxies. Compared to the previously studied local analogs of LBGs selected using rest-frame UV properties, local HAEs show similar UV luminosity surface density, weaker D_n_(4000) break, lower metallicity, and lower stellar mass. This implies that the local HAEs are less evolved galaxies than the traditional Lyman break analogs. In the stacked spectrum, local HAEs show a significant He II{lambda}4686 emission line suggesting a population of hot, massive stars similar to that seen in some Wolf-Rayet galaxies. Low [N II]/[O III] line flux ratios imply that local HAEs are inconsistent with being systems that host bright active galactic nuclei. Instead, it is highly likely that local HAEs are galaxies with an elevated ionization parameter, either due to a high electron density or large escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons as in the case of Wolf-Rayet galaxies.

- The most luminous galaxies in the blue passband have a larger correlation amplitude than L* galaxies. They do not appear to be preferentially located in rich clusters or groups, but a significant fraction of them seem to be in systems which include fainter members. We present an analysis of fields centered on 18 Very Luminous Galaxies (M_B_<=-21) selected from the Southern Sky Redshift Survey 2 (Cat. <J/AJ/116/1>, based on new observations and public data of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (Cat. <VII/226>); we present also additional data on a CfA VLG and on Arp 127.
