- For the project Galactic cold cores, Herschel photometric observations were carried out as a follow-up of cold regions of interstellar clouds previously identified with the Planck satellite. The aim of the project is to derive the physical properties of the population of cold sources and to study its connection to ongoing and future star formation. We build a catalogue of cold sources within the clouds in 116 fields observed with the Herschel PACS and SPIRE instruments. We wish to determine the general physical characteristics of the cold sources and to examine the correlations with their host cloud properties. From Herschel data, we compute colour temperature and column density maps of the fields. We estimate the distance to the target clouds and provide both uncertainties and reliability flags for the distances. The getsources multi-wavelength source extraction algorithm is employed to build a catalogue of several thousands of cold sources. Mid-infrared data are used along with a colour and position criteria to separate starless and protostellar sources. We also propose another classification method based on sub-millimetre temperature profiles. We analyse the statistical distributions of the physical properties of the source samples. We provide a catalogue of ~4000 cold sources within or near star forming clouds, most of which are located either in nearby molecular complexes (<1kpc) or in star forming regions of the nearby galactic arms (~2kpc). About 70% of the sources have a size compatible with an individual core, and 35% of those sources are likely gravitationally bound. Significant statistical differences in physical properties are found between starless and protostellar sources, in column density - dust temperature, mass - size, and mass - dust temperature diagrams. The core mass functions are very similar to those previously reported for other regions. On statistical grounds we find that gravitationally bound sources have higher background column densities (median N_bg_(H_2_)~5x10^21^cm-2) than unbound sources (median N_bg_(H_2_)~3x10^21^cm-2). These values of N_bg_(H_2_) are higher for larger dust temperature of the external layers of the parent cloud. However, only in few cases do we find clear N_bg_(H_2_) thresholds for the presence of cores. The dust temperature of cloud external layers shows clear variations with galactic location, as possibly do the source temperatures. Our data support a more complex view of star formation than in the simple idea of a column density threshold. They show a clear influence of the surrounding UV-visible radiation on how cores distribute in their host clouds, with possible variations on the Galactic scale.

- An inspection of DSS and 2MASS images of selected Milky Way regions led to the discovery of 66 stellar groupings whose morphologies, color-magnitude diagrams and stellar density distributions suggest that these objects are possible open clusters that are not yet listed in any catalogue. For 24 of these, which we consider to be the most likely candidates, we provide extensive descriptions on the basis of 2MASS photometry and their visual impression on DSS and 2MASS. Of those cluster candidates, 9 have fundamental parameters determined by fitting the color-magnitude diagrams with solar metallicity Padova isochrones. Additional 10 cluster candidates have distance moduli and reddenings derived from K magnitudes and (J-K) color indices of helium-burning red clump stars. As an addendum, we provide a list of a number of apparently yet unknown galactic and extragalactic objects which were also discovered during the survey.

- In this paper, we investigate the nature of 27 star cluster candidates, most of them projected towards the Galactic anticentre. We derive fundamental parameters for 20 confirmed clusters, among these 7 are new identifications. Four of the remaining are uncertain cases that require deeper photometry to establish their nature, and four are probably field fluctuations. In addition, we provide a partial census of the open clusters towards the Galactic anticentre. We also include in this study some interesting objects outside the anticentre region, in the second and third Galactic quadrants, mainly in the Perseus and outer arms. These clusters confirm the extension of the outer arm along the third quadrant. We also point out that the embedded cluster FSR 486, at a distance of 7.2+/-1.3kpc from the Sun, is projected on the line of sight of the Local Group irregular dwarf galaxy IC 10. Thus, part of the unusual properties of IC 10 may be explained by a Galactic contamination. We point out the importance of embedded clusters in tracing the spiral structure.

- A deep optical galaxy search in the southern Milky Way - aimed at reducing the width of the Zone of Avoidance - revealed 3279 galaxy candidates on the IIIaJ film copies of the ESO/SRC survey above the diameter limit of D greater than approximately 0.2 arcmin. Only 112 (3.4%) were previously catalogued. The surveyed region (266<l<296 and -10<b<+8) lies in the extension of the Hydra and Antlia clusters. Optical properties of the unveiled galaxies such as positions, diameters, magnitudes, morphological types are given in Table 1. Cross-identifications with the IRAS PSC (Cat. <II/125>) are given in Table 2.

- In this second paper of the catalogue series of galaxies behind the southern Milky Way, we report on the deep optical galaxy search in the Crux region (289{deg}<~l<~318{deg} and -10{deg}<~b<~10{deg}) and the Great Attractor region (316{deg}<~l<~338{deg} and -10{deg}<~b<~10{deg}). The galaxy catalogues are presented, a brief description of the galaxy search given, as well as a discussion on the distribution and characteristics of the uncovered galaxies. A total of 8183 galaxies with major diameters D>~0.2 arcmin were identified in this ~850 square degree area: 3759 galaxies in the Crux region and 4423 galaxies in the Great Attractor region. Of the 8183 galaxies, 229 (2.8%) were catalogued before in the optical (3 in radio) and 251 galaxies have a reliable (159), or likely (92) cross-identification in the IRAS Point Source Catalogue (3.1%). A number of prominent overdensities and filaments of galaxies are identified. They are not correlated with the Galactic foreground extinction and hence indicative of extragalactic large-scale structures. Redshifts obtained at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) for 518 of the newly catalogued galaxies in the Crux and Great Attractor regions (Fairall et al., 1998, Cat. <J/A+AS/127/463>; Woudt et al., 1999, Cat. <J/A+A/352/39>) confirm distinct voids and clusters in the area here surveyed. With this optical galaxy search, we have reduced the width of the optical `Zone of Avoidance' for galaxies with extinction-corrected diameters larger than 1.3' from extinction levels A_B>~1.0mag to A_B>~3.0mag: the remaining optical Zone of Avoidance is now limited by |b|<~3{deg} (see Fig. 16).

- We present a catalogue of 2D, point spread function-corrected de Vacouleurs, Sersic, de Vacouleurs+Exponential, and Sersic+Exponential fits of ~7x10^5^ spectroscopically selected galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. Fits are performed for the SDSS r band utilizing the fitting routine galfit and analysis pipeline pymorph. We compare these fits to prior catalogues. Fits are analysed using a physically motivated flagging system. The flags suggest that more than 90 percent of two-component fits can be used for analysis. We show that the fits follow the expected behaviour for early and late galaxy types. The catalogues provide a robust set of structural and photometric parameters for future galaxy studies. We show that some biases remain in the measurements, e.g. the presence of bars significantly affect the bulge measurements although the bulge ellipticity may be used to separate barred and non-barred galaxies, and about 15 percent of bulges of two-component fits are also affected by resolution. The catalogues are available in electronic format. We also provide an interface for generating postage stamp images of the 2D model and residual as well as the 1D profile. These images can be generated for a user-uploaded list of galaxies on demand.

- We consider a sample of 412 galaxies with radial velocities V_LG_<2500km/s situated in the sky region of RA=13.0h-19.0h, Dec=+10{deg}...+40{deg} between the Local Void and the Supergalactic plane. One hundred and eighty-one of them have individual distance estimates. Peculiar velocities of the galaxies as a function of Supergalactic latitude SGB show signs of Virgocentric infall at SGB<10{deg} and motion from the Local Void at SGB>60{deg}. A half of the Hercules-Bootes galaxies belong to 17 groups and 29 pairs, with the richest group around NGC5353. A typical group is characterized by the velocity dispersion of 67km/s, the harmonic radius of 182kpc, the stellar mass of 4.3x10^10^M_{sun}_ and the virial- to-stellar mass ratio of 32. The binary galaxies have the mean radial velocity difference of 37km/s, the projected separation of 96kpc, the mean integral stellar mass of 2.6x10^9^M_{sun}_ and the mean virial-to-stellar mass ratio of about 8. The total dark-matter-to-stellar mass ratio in the considered sky region amounts to 37 being almost the same as that in the Local Volume.

- In the region of the sky limited by the coordinates RA=7.0h...12.0h, Dec=0{deg}...+20{deg} and extending from the Virgo Cluster to the South Pole of the Local Supercluster, we consider the data on the galaxies with radial velocities V_LG_<~2000km/s. For 290 among them, we determine individual distances and peculiar velocities. In this region, known as the local velocity anomaly zone, there are 23 groups and 20 pairs of galaxies for which the estimates of virial/orbital masses are obtained. A nearby group around NGC3379 = Leo I and NGC3627 as well as the Local Group show the motion from the Local Void in the direction of Leo cloud with a characteristic velocity of about 400 km/s. Another rich group of galaxies around NGC3607 reveals peculiar velocity of about -420km/s in the frame of reference related with the cosmic background radiation. A peculiar scattered association of dwarf galaxies Gemini Flock at a distance of 8Mpc has the radial velocity dispersion of only 20km/s and the size of approximately 0.7Mpc. The virial mass estimate for it is 300 times greater than the total stellar mass. The ratio of the sum of virial masses of groups and pairs in the Leo/Can region to the sum of stellar masses of the galaxies contained in them equals 26, which is equivalent to the local average density {Omega}_m(local)_=0.074, which is 3-4 times smaller than the global average density of matter.

- We present a catalog of morphological and color data for galaxies with 21<I_814<25mag in the Hubble Deep Field (Williams et al. 1996, in Science with the Hubble Space Telescope II). Galaxies have been inspected and (when possible) independently visually classified on the MDS and DDO systems. Measurements of central concentration and asymmetry are also included in the catalog. The fraction of interacting and merging objects is seen to be significantly higher in the Hubble Deep Field than it is among nearby galaxies. Barred spirals are essentially absent from the deep sample. The fraction of early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is similar to the fraction of early-types in the Shapley-Ames Catalog, but the fraction of galaxies resembling archetypal grand-design late-type spiral galaxies is dramatically lower in the distant HDF sample.
