- We present a low-flux extension of the X-ray-selected ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS) published in Paper I of this series. Like the original BCS and employing an identical selection procedure, the BCS extension is compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) data in the northern hemisphere ({delta}>=0{deg}) and at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>=20{deg}). It comprises 99 X-ray-selected clusters of galaxies with measured redshifts z<=0.3 (as well as eight more at z>0.3) and total fluxes between 2.8x10^-12^ and 4.4x10^-12^erg/cm^2^/s in the 0.1-2.4keV band (the latter value being the flux limit of the original BCS). The extension can be combined with the main sample published in 1998 to form the homogeneously selected extended BCS (eBCS), the largest and statistically best understood cluster sample to emerge from the RASS to date. The nominal completeness of the combined sample (defined with respect to a power-law fit to the bright end of the BCS logN-logS distribution) is relatively low at 75per cent (compared with 90per cent for the high-flux sample of Paper I). However, just as for the original BCS, this incompleteness can be accurately quantified, and thus statistically corrected for, as a function of X-ray luminosity and redshift. In addition to its importance for improved statistical studies of the properties of clusters in the local Universe, the low-flux extension of the BCS is also intended to serve as a finding list for X-ray-bright clusters in the northern hemisphere which we hope will prove useful in the preparation of cluster observations with the next generation of X-ray telescopes such as Chandra and XMM-Newton.

- We present the detection of 89 low surface brightness (LSB), and thus low stellar density galaxy candidates in the Perseus cluster core, of the kind named 'ultra-diffuse galaxies', with mean effective V-band surface brightnesses 24.8-27.1mag/arcsec^2^, total V-band magnitudes -11.8 to -15.5mag, and half-light radii 0.7-4.1kpc. The candidates have been identified in a deep mosaic covering 0.3deg^2^, based on wide-field imaging data obtained with the William Herschel Telescope. We find that the LSB galaxy population is depleted in the cluster centre and only very few LSB candidates have half-light radii larger than 3kpc. This appears consistent with an estimate of their tidal radius, which does not reach beyond the stellar extent even if we assume a high dark matter content (M/L=100). In fact, three of our candidates seem to be associated with tidal streams, which points to their current disruption. Given that published data on faint LSB candidates in the Coma cluster --with its comparable central density to Perseus-- show the same dearth of large objects in the core region, we conclude that these cannot survive the strong tides in the centres of massive clusters.

- We investigate the stellar populations in a sample of 89 faint red galaxies in the Coma cluster, using high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectroscopy from the 6.5-m MMT. Our sample is drawn from two 1{deg} fields, one centred on the cluster core and the other located 1{deg} to the south-west of the cluster centre. The target galaxies are mostly 2-4mag fainter than M*; galaxies with these luminosities have been previously studied only using small samples, or at low S/N. For a comparison sample we use published high-S/N data for red-sequence galaxies in the Shapley supercluster. We use state-of-the-art stellar population models (by R. Schiavon, Cat. <J/ApJS/171/146>) to interpret the absorption-line indices and infer the single-burst-equivalent age and metallicity (Fe/H) for each galaxy, as well as the abundances of the light elements Mg, Ca, C and N.

- We have analyzed IRAS image data using a random position, multiple-aperture photometry method to study diffuse far-infrared emission for a sample of 56 clusters of galaxies at 60 and 100um. Five of the clusters in the sample exhibit excess far-infrared emission, but at low levels of significance. For A496 (Perseus) and MKW 1, this emission appears to be associated with a strong point source: in A2344, the observed excess is probably due to a foreground cirrus cloud. Two clusters, A262 and A2670, show evidence for extended diffuse emission. This emission is unlikely to be due to point sources associated with the clusters. In these two clusters, the diffuse emission shows evidence of being extended along the cluster's major axis. Far-infrared maps at 60 and 100um are presented for these five clusters. We find that contamination due to diffuse Galactic cirrus represents the major source of uncertainty in the measurement of far-infrared emission. The mean cluster fluxes for the sample as a whole are 44 and 107mJy for a 4' diameter aperture at 60 and 100um, respectively. The corresponding fluxes for a 10' diameter aperture are 138 and 253mJy at 60 and 100um. Photometry for the entire sample shows statistical evidence for excess emission at 60um associated with clusters in apertures 4' and 10' in diameter. This result is unlikely to be caused by random sampling errors. The flux distributions are analyzed for evidence that excess far-infrared radiation correlates with cluster environmental characteristics. Although we find evidence that poorer X-ray clusters are stronger far-infrared emitters, this result is tentative owing to the small sample sizes involved. The far-infrared luminosities, dust temperatures, and dust masses which these results imply are also presented. Finally, the origin and possible heating mechanism for dust in the intracluster medium is discussed.

- The Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS) is the deepest, confusion-limited survey of the Virgo Cluster at far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths. The entire survey at full depth covers ~55deg^2^ in five bands (100-500um), encompassing the areas around the central dominant elliptical galaxies (M87, M86 and M49) and extends as far as the NW cloud, the W cloud and the Southern extension. The survey extends beyond this region with lower sensitivity so that the total area covered is 84 deg2. In this paper we describe the data, the data acquisition techniques and present the detection rates of the optically selected Virgo Cluster Catalogue (VCC). We detect 254 (34%) of 750 VCC galaxies found within the survey boundary in at least one band and 171 galaxies are detected in all five bands. For the remainder of the galaxies we have measured strict upper limits for their FIR emission.

- The relation between the Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies (hereafter UCDs) recently discovered in the Fornax cluster (Drinkwater et al., 2003Natur.423..519D; Mieske et al., 2002, Cat. <J/A+A/383/823>) and the brightest globular clusters associated with the central galaxy NGC 1399 has been investigated in the spectroscopic Fornax Compact Object Survey FCOS. FCOS was carried out with the 2.5m du Pont telescope at Las Campanas, in the three nights of 2002/12/04 to 2002/12/06. Mieske et al. (2002, Cat. <J/A+A/383/823>) deals with the first part FCOS-1, this paper deals with the larger FCOS-2. The spectral resolution of FCOS was approx. 4{AA}. In the FCOS, 280 unresolved objects with 0<(V-I)<1.5mag in the magnitude space covering UCDs and bright globular clusters (18<V<21mag) were observed spectroscopically, among them 185 in FCOS-2. In the entire FCOS-sample there are five already known UCDs and 54 new Fornax members, 12 from FCOS-1 and 42 from FCOS-2.

- The abundances of Fe in the intracluster medium of nearby (z<0.08) clusters were measured up to 0.3~0.5r_180_. We analyzed 28 clusters of galaxies observed with XMM-Newton. We derived Fe abundances from the flux ratios of Fe lines to the continuum within an energy range of 3.5-6keV to minimize and evaluate systematic uncertainties.

- We examine relations between shape, richness, and velocity dispersion for a sample of 350 clusters of galaxies of all morphologies, including those with visible substructure. For our sample the apparent shape of clusters is correlated with velocity dispersion and Abell (1958ApJS....3..211A) richness in the sense that poor, low dispersion clusters are flatter in the mean than their richer, higher dispersion counterparts. These characteristics are also exhibited by the X-ray emitting gas. There are virtually no highly flattened clusters having high richness or high velocity dispersions in the sample. We find that the variation of richness and velocity dispersion with apparent shape is too steep to be assigned to projection effects, and conclude rich, high dispersion clusters are intrinsically more nearly spherical than poorer clusters and that two-body relaxation is probably not an effective anisotropy damping mechanism in Abell clusters.

- We provide flux-limited and volume-limited galaxy group and cluster catalogues, based on the spectroscopic sample of the SDSS data release 10 galaxies. We used a modified friends-of-friends (FoF) method with a variable linking length in the transverse and radial directions to identify as many realistic groups as possible. The flux-limited catalogue incorporates galaxies down to m_r_=17.77mag. It includes 588193 galaxies and 82458 groups. The volume-limited catalogues are complete for absolute magnitudes down to M_r_= -18.0, -18.5, -19.0, -19.5, -20.0, -20.5, and -21.0; the completeness is achieved within different spatial volumes, respectively. Our analysis shows that flux-limited and volume-limited group samples are well compatible to each other, especially for the larger groups/clusters. Dynamical mass estimates, based on radial velocity dispersions and group extent in the sky, are added to the extracted groups. The catalogues can also be accessed via http://cosmodb.to.ee.

- We present a detailed, multi-wavelength study of star formation (SF) and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in 11 near-infrared (IR) selected, spectroscopically confirmed massive (>~10^14^M_{sun}_) galaxy clusters at 1<z<1.75. Using new deep Herschel/PACS imaging, we characterize the optical to far-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for IR-luminous cluster galaxies, finding that they can, on average, be well described by field galaxy templates. Identification and decomposition of AGNs through SED fittings allows us to include the contribution to cluster SF from AGN host galaxies. We quantify the star-forming fraction, dust-obscured SF rates (SFRs) and specific SFRs for cluster galaxies as a function of cluster-centric radius and redshift. In good agreement with previous studies, we find that SF in cluster galaxies at z>~1.4 is largely consistent with field galaxies at similar epochs, indicating an era before significant quenching in the cluster cores (r<0.5Mpc). This is followed by a transition to lower SF activity as environmental quenching dominates by z~1. Enhanced SFRs are found in lower mass (10.1<logM_*_/M_{sun}_<10.8) cluster galaxies. We find significant variation in SF from cluster to cluster within our uniformly selected sample, indicating that caution should be taken when evaluating individual clusters. We examine AGNs in clusters from z=0.5-2, finding an excess AGN fraction at z>~1, suggesting environmental triggering of AGNs during this epoch. We argue that our results --a transition from field-like to quenched SF, enhanced SF in lower mass galaxies in the cluster cores, and excess AGNs-- are consistent with a co-evolution between SF and AGNs in clusters and an increased merger rate in massive halos at high redshift.
