- We explore the properties of 24 field early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0.20<z<0.75 down to M_B<=-19.30 in a sample extracted from the FORS Deep Field and the William Herschel Deep Field. Target galaxies were selected on the basis of a combination of luminosity, spectrophotometric type, morphology and photometric redshift or broad-band colours. High signal-to-noise intermediate-resolution spectroscopy has been acquired at the Very Large Telescope, complemented by deep high-resolution imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the HST and additional ground-based multi-band photometry. All galaxy spectra were observed under sub-arcsecond conditions and allow to derive accurate kinematics and stellar population properties of the galaxies. To clarify the low level of star formation detected in some galaxies, we identify the amount of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in our sample using archive data of Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray surveys. None of the galaxies in our sample were identified as secure AGN sources based on their X-ray emission. The rest-frame B and K-band scaling relations of the Faber-Jackson relation and the Fundamental Plane display a moderate evolution for the field early-type galaxies. Lenticular (S0) galaxies feature on average a stronger luminosity evolution and bluer rest-frame colours which can be explained that they comprise more diverse stellar populations compared to elliptical galaxies. The evolution of the FP can be interpreted as an average change in the dynamical (effective) mass-to-light ratio of our galaxies as <{Delta}log(M/L_B_)/z>=-0.74+/-0.08. The M/L evolution of these field galaxies suggests a continuous mass assembly of field early-type galaxies during the last 5Gyr, that gets support by recent studies of field galaxies up to z~1. Independent evidence for recent star formation activity is provided by spectroscopic (OII emission, Hdelta) and photometric (rest-frame broad-band colors) diagnostics. Based on the Hdelta absorption feature we detect a weak residual star formation for galaxies that accounts for 5%-10% in the total stellar mass of these galaxies. The co-evolution in the luminosity and mass of our galaxies favours a downsizing formation process. We find some evidence that our galaxies experienced a period of star formation quenching, possible triggered by AGN activity that is in good agreement with recent results on both observational and theoretical side.

- We built a catalog of 122 FR II radio galaxies, called FRIICAT, selected from a published sample obtained by combining observations from the NVSS, FIRST, and SDSS surveys. The catalog includes sources with redshift <=0.15, an edge-brightened radio morphology, and those with at least one of the emission peaks located at radius r larger than 30 kpc from the center of the host. The radio luminosity at 1.4GHz of the FRIICAT sources covers the range L1.4~10^39.5^-10^42.5^erg/s. The FRIICAT catalog has 90% of low and 10% of high excitation galaxies (LEGs and HEGs), respectively. The properties of these two classes are significantly different. The FRIICAT LEGs are mostly luminous (-20>~Mr>~-24), red early-type galaxies with black hole masses in the range 10^8^<~M_BH_<~10^9^M_{sun}_; they are essentially indistinguishable from the FR Is belonging to the FRICAT. The HEG FR IIs are associated with optically bluer and mid-IR redder hosts than the LEG FR IIs and to galaxies and black holes that are smaller, on average, by a factor ~2. FR IIs have a factor ~3higher average radio luminosity than FR Is. Nonetheless, most (~90%) of the selected FR IIs have a radio power that is lower, by as much as a factor of ~100, than the transition value between FR Is and FR IIs found in the 3C sample. The correspondence between the morphological classification of FR I and FR II and the separation in radio power disappears when including sources selected at low radio flux thresholds, which is in line with previous results. In conclusion, a radio source produced by a low power jet can be edge brightened or edge darkened, and the outcome is not related to differences in the optical properties of the host galaxy.

- The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec-scale resolution of 90GHz line emission from massive molecular clumps in the Milky Way. We present the first Mopra (ATNF) maps of the CHaMP survey region (300{deg}>l>280{deg}) in the HCO^+^J=1->0 line, which is usually thought to trace gas at densities up to 10^11^m^-3^. In this paper, we introduce the survey and its strategy, describe the observational and data reduction procedures, and give a complete catalog of moment maps of the HCO^+^J=1->0 emission from the ensemble of 303 massive molecular clumps. From these maps we also derive the physical parameters of the clumps, using standard molecular spectral-line analysis techniques.

- We present a study of the dynamical properties of 125 compact stellar systems (CSSs) in the nearby giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128, using high-resolution spectra (R~26000) obtained with Very Large Telescope/FLAMES. Our results provide evidence for a new type of star cluster, based on the CSS dynamical mass scaling relations. All radial velocity (v_r_) and line-of-sight velocity dispersion ({sigma}_los_) measurements are performed with the penalized pixel fitting (ppxf) technique, which provided {sigma}_ppxf_ estimates for 115 targets. The {sigma}_ppxf_ estimates are corrected to the 2D projected half-light radii, {sigma}_1/2_, as well as the cluster cores, {sigma}_0_, accounting for observational/aperture effects and are combined with structural parameters, from high spatial resolution imaging, in order to derive total dynamical masses (M_dyn_) for 112 members of NGC5128's star cluster system. In total, 89 CSSs have dynamical masses measured for the first time along with the corresponding dynamical mass-to-light ratios ({sigma}_1/2_). We find two distinct sequences in the {gamma}^dyn^_V_-M_dyn_ plane, which are well approximated by power laws of the forms {gamma}^dyn^_V_{propto}M_dyn_^0.33+/-0.04^ and {gamma}^dyn^_V_{propto}M_dyn_^0.79+/-0.04^. The shallower sequence corresponds to the very bright tail of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF), while the steeper relation appears to be populated by a distinct group of objects that require significant dark gravitating components such as central massive black holes and/or exotically concentrated dark matter distributions. This result would suggest that the formation and evolution of these CSSs are markedly different from the "classical" globular clusters in NGC 5128 and the Local Group, despite the fact that these clusters have luminosities similar to the GCLF turnover magnitude. We include a thorough discussion of myriad factors potentially influencing our measurements.

- We examine relations between shape, richness, and velocity dispersion for a sample of 350 clusters of galaxies of all morphologies, including those with visible substructure. For our sample the apparent shape of clusters is correlated with velocity dispersion and Abell (1958ApJS....3..211A) richness in the sense that poor, low dispersion clusters are flatter in the mean than their richer, higher dispersion counterparts. These characteristics are also exhibited by the X-ray emitting gas. There are virtually no highly flattened clusters having high richness or high velocity dispersions in the sample. We find that the variation of richness and velocity dispersion with apparent shape is too steep to be assigned to projection effects, and conclude rich, high dispersion clusters are intrinsically more nearly spherical than poorer clusters and that two-body relaxation is probably not an effective anisotropy damping mechanism in Abell clusters.

- We analyze molecular-gas formation in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) clouds using the latest CO data, obtained from the FOREST (four-beam receiver system on the 45m telescope) unbiased Galactic plane imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45m telescope, and using HI data taken from the Very Large Array Galactic plane survey. We applied a dendrogram algorithm to the HI data cube to identify HI clouds, and we calculated the HI mass and molecular-gas mass by summing the CO line intensity within each HI cloud. On the basis of the results, we created a catalog of 5737 identified HI clouds with local standard of rest (LSR) velocity of VLSR<=-20km/s in galactic longitude and latitude ranges of 20{deg}<=l<=50{deg} and -1{deg}<=b<=1{deg}, respectively. We found that most of the HI clouds are distributed within a Galactocentric distance of 16kpc, and most of them are in the cold neutral medium phase. In addition, we determined that the high-mass end of the HI mass function is fitted well with a power-law function with an index of 2.3. Although two sequences of self-gravitating and diffuse clouds are expected to appear in the M_tot_-M_H2_ diagram according to previous works based on a plane-parallel model, the observational data show only a single sequence with large scattering within these two sequences. This implies that most of the clouds are mixtures of these two types of clouds. Moreover, we suggest the following scenario of molecular-gas formation: an HI-dominant cloud evolved with increasing H2 mass along a path of M_H2_{prop.to}M^2^_tot_ by collecting diffuse gas before reaching and moving along the curves of the two sequences.

- Radial velocities and central velocity dispersions are derived for 238 E/S0 galaxies from medium-resolution spectroscopy. New spectroscopic data have been obtained as part of a study of the Fundamental Plane distances and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in three selected directions of the South Equatorial Strip, undertaken in order to investigate the reality of large-scale streaming motion; results of this study have been reported in Mueller et al. (1998ApJ...507L.105M). The new APM South Equatorial Strip Catalog (-17.5deg<{delta}<+2.5deg) (Raychaudhury & Lynden-Bell, 2000) was used to select the sample of field galaxies in three directions: (1) 15h10-16h10; (2) 20h30-21h50; (3) 00h10-01h30. The spectra obtained have a median S/N per {AA} of 23, an instrumental resolution (FWHM) of ~4{AA}, and the spectrograph resolution (dispersion) is ~100km/s. The Fourier cross-correlation method was used to derive the radial velocities and velocity dispersions. The velocity dispersions have been corrected for the size of the aperture and for the galaxy effective radius. Comparisons of the derived radial velocities with data from the literature show that our values are accurate to 40km/s. A comparison with results from Jorgensen et al. (1995MNRAS.276.1341J) shows that the derived central velocity dispersion have an rms scatter of 0.036 in log{sigma}. There is no offset relative to the velocity dispersions of Davies et al. (1987ApJS...64..581D).

- The Gaia Collaboration has used Gaia-DR2 sources with six-dimensional (6D) phase space information to derive kinematical maps within 5kpc of the Sun, which is a reachable range for stars with relative error in distance lower than 20%. Here we aim to extend the range of distances by a factor of two to three, thus adding the range of Galactocentric distances between 13kpc and 20kpc to the previous maps, with their corresponding error and root mean square values. We make use of the whole sample of stars of Gaia-DR2 including radial velocity measurements, which consists in more than seven million sources, and we apply a statistical deconvolution of the parallax errors based on the Lucy's inversion method of the Fredholm integral equations of the first kind, without assuming any prior. The new extended maps provide lots of new and corroborated information about the disk kinematics: significant departures of circularity in the mean orbits with radial Galactocentric velocities between -20 and +20km/s and vertical velocities between -10 and +10km/s; variations of the azimuthal velocity with position; asymmetries between the northern and the southern Galactic hemispheres, especially towards the anticenter that includes a larger azimuthal velocity in the south; and others. These extended kinematical maps can be used to investigate the different dynamical models of our Galaxy, and we will present our own analyses in the forthcoming second part of this paper. At present, it is evident that the Milky Way is far from a simple stationary configuration in rotational equilibrium, but is characterized by streaming motions in all velocity components with conspicuous velocity gradients.

- The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale (280{deg}<l<300{deg}, -4{deg}<b<2{deg}), unbiased, subparsec resolution survey of Galactic molecular clumps and their embedded stars. Barnes et al. (Paper I, 2011, J/ApJS/196/12) presented the source catalog of ~300 clumps based on HCO^+^(1-0) emission, used to estimate masses M. Here we use archival midinfrared-to-millimeter continuum data to construct spectral energy distributions. Fitting two-temperature gray-body models, we derive bolometric luminosities, L. We find that the clumps have 10<~L/L_{sun}_<~10^6.5^ and 0.1<~L/M/[L_{sun}_/M_{sun}_]<~10^3^, consistent with a clump population spanning a range of instantaneous star-formation efficiencies from 0 to ~50%. We thus expect L/M to be a useful, strongly varying indicator of clump evolution during the star cluster formation process.
