- Description:
- The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey: The Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is an unbiased continuum survey of the inner Galactic disk at 870 micron. It covers +/-60{deg} in Galactic longitude and aims to find all massive clumps at various stages of high-mass star formation in the inner Galaxy, particularly the earliest evolutionary phases. We aim to determine properties such as the gas kinetic temperature and dynamics of new massive cold clumps found by ATLASGAL. Most importantly, we derived their kinematical distances from the measured line velocities. We observed the ammonia (J,K)=(1,1) to (3,3) inversion transitions toward 862 clumps of a flux-limited sample of submm clumps detected by ATLASGAL and extracted ^13^CO(1-0) spectra from the Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). We determined distances for a subsample located at the tangential points (71 sources) and for 277 clumps whose near/far distance ambiguity is resolved. Most ATLASGAL clumps are cold with rotational temperatures from 10-30K with a median of 17K. They have a wide range of NH_3_ linewidths (1-7km/s with 1.9km/s as median, which by far exceeds the thermal linewidth, as well as a broad distribution of high column densities from 10^14^ to 10^16^cm^-2^ (median of 2x10^15^cm^-2^) with an NH_3_ abundance in the range of 5 to 30x10^-8^. ATLASGAL sources are massive, >100M_{sun}_, and a fraction of clumps with a broad linewidth is in virial equilibrium. We found an enhancement of clumps at Galactocentric radii of 4.5 and 6kpc. The comparison of the NH_3_ lines as high-density probes with the GRS ^13^CO emission as low-density envelope tracer yields broader linewidths for ^13^CO than for NH_3_. The small differences in derived clump velocities between NH_3_ (representing dense core material) and ^13^CO (representing more diffuse molecular cloud gas) suggests that the cores are essentially at rest relative to the surrounding giant molecular cloud. The high detection rate (87%) confirms ammonia as an excellent probe of the molecular content of the massive, cold clumps revealed by ATLASGAL. A clear trend of increasing rotational temperatures and linewidths with evolutionary stage is seen for source samples ranging from 24 micron dark clumps to clumps with embedded HII regions. The survey provides the largest ammonia sample of high-mass star forming clumps and thus presents an important repository for the characterization of statistical properties of the clumps and the selection of subsamples for detailed, high-resolution follow-up studies.

- Description:
- The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) is the largest and most sensitive systematic survey of the inner Galactic plane in the submillimetre wavelength regime. The observations were carried out with the Large APEX Bolometer Camera (LABOCA), an array of 295 bolometers observing at 870um (345GHz). In this research note we present the compact source catalogue for the 280{deg}<l<330{deg}and 21{deg}<l<60{deg}regions of this survey. The construction of this catalogue was made with the source extraction routine SExtractor using the same input parameters and procedures as used to analyse the inner Galaxy region presented in an earlier publication (i.e., 330{deg}<l<21{deg}). We have identified 3523 compact sources and present a catalogue of their properties. When combined with the regions already published (see Contreras et al., 2013, Cat. J/A+A/549/A45), this provides a comprehensive and unbiased database of ~10163 massive, dense clumps located across the inner Galaxy.

- Description:
- We present first results from an unbiased 50deg^2^ submillimeter Galactic survey at 250, 350, and 500um from the 2006 flight of the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope. The map has resolution ranging from 36" to 60" in the three submillimeter bands spanning the thermal emission peak of cold starless cores. We determine the temperature, luminosity, and mass of more than 1000 compact sources in a range of evolutionary stages and an unbiased statistical characterization of the population. From comparison with C^18^O data, we find the dust opacity per gas mass, {kappa}r=0.16cm^2^/g at 250um, for cold clumps. We find that 2% of the mass of the molecular gas over this diverse region is in cores colder than 14K, and that the mass function for these cold cores is consistent with a power law with index {alpha}=-3.22+/-0.14 over the mass range 14M_{sun}_<M<80M_{sun}_.

- 3D extinction map of northern Galactic plane
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We present a three dimensional map of extinction in the Northern Galactic Plane derived using photometry from the IPHAS survey. We construct the map using a method based on a hierarchical Bayesian model as previously described by Sale (2012MNRAS.427.2119S). In addition to mean extinction, we also measure differential extinction, which arises from the fractal nature of the ISM. The method applied also furnishes us with photometric estimates of the distance, extinction, effective temperature, surface gravity, and mass for ~38 million stars. Further details about the data as well as additional formats and data products are available via http://www.iphas.org/extinction.

- Dust clumps in the Galactic Plane

- Description:
- We present imaging observations of continuum emission from interstellar dust at 850 and 1200um of a section of the Galactic Plane covering 2deg^2^ centered at l=44{deg}. Complementary jiggle-mapping and fast-scanning techniques were used, respectively, at these two wavelengths. The mapped area includes the well-known star formation regions W49 and G45.1/45.5. Using an automated clump-finding routine, we identify 132 compact 850um emission features within the region above a completeness level of about 200mJy/beam. The positions of the latter objects were used to determine fluxes from the 1200um image. Spectral line data were subsequently obtained with the same observing beamwidth as at 850um for almost half of the objects; these were either imaged in the ^13^CO (3-2) line, or basic characteristics determined using the ^12^CO (3-2) transition. We use these data, supplemented by existing ^13^CO (1-0) and HI survey data, to determine distances and hence derive masses for the dust clump ensemble, assuming a uniform dust temperature of 15K. From these data we find that the number-mass relationship for clumps in the field is similar to that found for individual star-forming regions.

- Description:
- The Census of High- and Medium-mass Protostars (CHaMP) is the first large-scale, unbiased, uniform mapping survey at sub-parsec-scale resolution of 90GHz line emission from massive molecular clumps in the Milky Way. We present the first Mopra (ATNF) maps of the CHaMP survey region (300{deg}>l>280{deg}) in the HCO^+^J=1->0 line, which is usually thought to trace gas at densities up to 10^11^m^-3^. In this paper, we introduce the survey and its strategy, describe the observational and data reduction procedures, and give a complete catalog of moment maps of the HCO^+^J=1->0 emission from the ensemble of 303 massive molecular clumps. From these maps we also derive the physical parameters of the clumps, using standard molecular spectral-line analysis techniques.

- Galactic Worms

- CDS
- Description:
- A catalog of candidates for the Galactic Worms that are possibly the walls surrounding the superbubbles is compiled; 118 isolated structures that appear both in HI and in IR (60 and 100{mu}m). 52 are possibly associated with HII regions. It is found that the 100-{mu}m emissivity increases systematically toward the Galactic interior, which is consistent with the increase of the general interstellar radiation field. The 100-{mu}m emissivity of the structures associated with the HII regions is larger than that of the structures without associated HII regions. The 60-100{mu}m ratio is large, 0.28+/-0.03, which may indicate that the grains associated with the atomic gas have a relatively large population of small grains. 35 structures appear in the 408MHz continuum. The IR and the radio continuum properties suggest that the 408MHz continuum emission in those structures is very likely thermal. The implications of these results on the ionization of gas far from the Galactic plane are discussed.

- GaussPy+ decomposition of Galactic Ring Survey
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/633/A14
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The analysis of large molecular line surveys of the Galactic plane is essential for our understanding of the gas kinematics on Galactic scales and, in particular, its link with the formation and evolution of dense structures in the interstellar medium. An approximation of the emission peaks with Gaussian functions allows for an efficient and straightforward extraction of useful physical information contained in the shape and Doppler-shifted frequency of the emission lines contained in these enormous data sets. In this work, we present an overview and the first results of a Gaussian decomposition of the entire Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) ^13^CO (1-0) data that consists of about 2.3 million spectra. We performed the decomposition with the fully automated GaussPy+ algorithm and fitted about 4.6 million Gaussian components to the GRS spectra. These decomposition results enable novel and unexplored ways to interpret and study the gas velocity structure. We discuss the statistics of the fit components and relations between the fitted intensities, velocity centroids, and velocity dispersions. We find that the magnitude of the velocity dispersion values increase towards the inner Galaxy and around the Galactic midplane, which we speculate is partly due to the influence of the Galactic bar and regions with higher non-thermal motions located in the midplane, respectively. We also used our decomposition results to infer global properties of the gas emission and find that the number of fit components used per spectrum is indicative of the amount of structure along the line of sight. We find that the emission lines from regions located on the far side of the Galaxy show increased velocity dispersion values, which are likely due to beam averaging effects. We demonstrate how this trend has the potential to aid in characterising Galactic structure by disentangling emission that belongs to the nearby Aquila Rift molecular cloud from emission that is more likely associated with the Perseus and Outer spiral arms. With this work, we also make our entire decomposition results available.

- 90GHz obs. of high-mass star-forming regions
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/777/157

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The chemical changes of high-mass star-forming regions provide a potential method for classifying their evolutionary stages and, ultimately, ages. In this study, we search for correlations between molecular abundances and the evolutionary stages of dense molecular clumps associated with high-mass star formation. We use the molecular line maps from Year 1 of the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90GHz (MALT90) Survey. The survey mapped several hundred individual star-forming clumps chosen from the ATLASGAL survey to span the complete range of evolution, from prestellar to protostellar to H II regions. The evolutionary stage of each clump is classified using the Spitzer GLIMPSE/MIPSGAL mid-IR surveys. Where possible, we determine the dust temperatures and H_2_ column densities for each clump from Herschel/Hi-GAL continuum data. From MALT90 data, we measure the integrated intensities of the N_2_H^+^, HCO^+^, HCN and HNC(1-0) lines, and derive the column densities and abundances of N_2_H^+^ and HCO^+^. The Herschel dust temperatures increase as a function of the IR-based Spitzer evolutionary classification scheme, with the youngest clumps being the coldest, which gives confidence that this classification method provides a reliable way to assign evolutionary stages to clumps. Both N_2_H^+^ and HCO^+^ abundances increase as a function of evolutionary stage, whereas the N_2_H^+^(1-0) to HCO^+^(1-0) integrated intensity ratios show no discernable trend. The HCN(1-0) to HNC(1-0) integrated intensity ratios show marginal evidence of an increase as the clumps evolve.

- HI 21cm forbidden-velocity wings
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/173/85
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the results of a search for faint HI 21cm emission line wings at velocities forbidden by Galactic rotation in the Galactic plane using the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI Survey data and the HI Southern Galactic Plane Survey data. These "forbidden-velocity wings" (FVWs) appear as protruding excessive emission in comparison with their surroundings in limited (>~2{deg}) spatial regions over velocity extents of more than ~20km/s in large-scale (l,v) diagrams. Their high velocities imply that there should be some dynamical phenomena associated. We have identified 87 FVWs. We present their catalog and discuss their distribution and statistical properties. We found that 85% of FVWs are not coincident with known supernova remnants (SNRs), galaxies, or high-velocity clouds. Their natures are currently unknown.
