- We present early results from the JCMT (James Clerk Maxwell Telescope) Plane Survey (JPS), which has surveyed the northern inner Galactic plane between longitudes l=7{deg} and l=63{deg} in the 850-{mu}m continuum with SCUBA-2 (Submm Common-User Bolometer Array 2), as part of the JCMT Legacy Survey programme. Data from the l=30{deg} survey region, which contains the massive-star-forming regions W43 and G29.96, are analysed after approximately 40 percent of the observations had been completed. The pixel-to-pixel noise is found to be 19mJy/beam after a smooth over the beam area, and the projected equivalent noise levels in the final survey are expected to be around 10mJy/beam. An initial extraction of compact sources was performed using the FellWalker method, resulting in the detection of 1029 sources above a 5{sigma} surface-brightness threshold. The completeness limits in these data are estimated to be around 0.2Jy/beam (peak flux density) and 0.8 Jy (integrated flux density) and are therefore probably already dominated by source confusion in this relatively crowded section of the survey. The flux densities of extracted compact sources are consistent with those of matching detections in the shallower APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) survey. We analyse the virial and evolutionary state of the detected clumps in the W43 star-forming complex and find that they appear younger than the Galactic-plane average.

- RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) are tracers of the Milky Way's fossil record, holding valuable information on its formation and early evolution. Owing to the high interstellar extinction endemic to the Galactic plane, distant RRLs lying at low Galactic latitudes have been elusive. We attained a census of 1892 high-confidence RRLs by exploiting the near-infrared photometric database of the VVV survey's disk footprint spanning ~70{deg} of Galactic longitude, using a machine-learned classifier. Novel data-driven methods were employed to accurately characterize their spatial distribution using sparsely sampled multi-band photometry. The RRL metallicity distribution function (MDF) was derived from their K_s_-band light-curve parameters using machine-learning methods. The MDF shows remarkable structural similarities to both the spectroscopic MDF of red clump giants and the MDF of bulge RRLs. We model the MDF with a multi-component density distribution and find that the number density of stars associated with the different model components systematically changes with both the Galactocentric radius and vertical distance from the Galactic plane, equivalent to weak metallicity gradients. Based on the consistency with results from the ARGOS survey, three MDF modes are attributed to the old disk populations, while the most metal-poor RRLs are probably halo interlopers. We propose that the dominant [Fe/H] component with a mean of -1dex might correspond to the outskirts of an ancient Galactic spheroid or classical bulge component residing in the central Milky Way. The physical origins of the RRLs in this study need to be verified by kinematical information.

- Imaging surveys of dust emission at (sub)millimetre wavelengths provide a powerful tool for studying molecular clouds and the early stages of star formation. Through submm dust continuum mapping, we attempt to search for genuine infrared-dark clouds (IRDCs) and precursors to massive stars and stellar clusters in the Galactic plane, and to determine their basic physical properties. We have mapped four selected fields of about 0.5degx0.5deg that contain Spitzer 8-um dark regions with LABOCA at 870um. Selected positions in the fields were observed in C^17^O(2-1) to obtain kinematic information. The obtained LABOCA maps are used in conjunction with the Spitzer IR images.

- We present the Multi-Array Galactic Plane Imaging Survey (MAGPIS), which maps portions of the first Galactic quadrant with an angular resolution, sensitivity, and dynamic range that surpass existing radio images of the Milky Way by more than an order of magnitude. The source detection threshold at 20cm is in the range 12mJy over the 85% of the survey region (5{deg}<l<32{deg}, |b|<0.8{deg}) not covered by bright extended emission; the angular resolution is ~6". We catalog over 3000 discrete sources (diameters mostly <30") and present an atlas of ~400 diffuse emission regions. New and archival data at 90cm for the whole survey area are also presented. Comparison of our catalogs and images with the Midcourse Space Experiment mid-infrared data allows us to provide preliminary discrimination between thermal and nonthermal sources. We identify 49 high-probability supernova remnant candidates, increasing by a factor of 7 the number of known remnants with diameters smaller than 5' in the survey region; several are pulsar wind nebula candidates and/or very small diameter remnants (D<45").

- The mass fraction of dense gas within giant molecular clouds (GMCs) of the Milky Way is investigated using ^13^CO data from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Plane Surveys and the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) of 1.1mm dust continuum emission. A sample of 860 compact dust sources are selected from the BGPS catalog and kinematically linked to 344 clouds of extended (>3') ^13^CO J=1-0 emission. Gas masses are tabulated for the full dust source and subregions within the dust sources with mass surface densities greater than 200M_{sun}_/pc^2^, which are assumed to be regions of enhanced volume density. Masses of the parent GMCs are calculated assuming optically thin ^13^CO J=1-0 emission and local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The mean fractional mass of dust sources to host GMC mass is 0.11^+0.12^_-0.06__. The high column density subregions comprise 0.07^+0.13^_-0.05_ of the mass of the cloud. Owing to our assumptions, these values are upper limits to the true mass fractions. The fractional mass of dense gas is independent of GMC mass and gas surface density. The low dense gas mass fraction suggests that the formation of dense structures within GMCs is the primary bottleneck for star formation. The distribution of velocity differences between the dense gas and the low density material along the line of sight is also examined. We find a strong, centrally peaked distribution centered on zero velocity displacement. This distribution of velocity differences is modeled with radially converging flows toward the dense gas position that are randomly oriented with respect to the observed line of sight. These models constrain the infall velocities to be 2-4km/s for various flow configurations.

- We observe red clump stars in four fields along the Galactic bar major axis (l=10{deg}, -6{deg}, 6{deg} and b=0{deg}, plus a field at l=0{deg}, b=1{deg}) with low-resolution spectroscopy from FLAMES/GIRAFFE (setup LR08) at the VLT, observing around the CaII triplet. We developed robust methods to extract radial velocity and metallicity estimates from these low signal-to-noise spectra. Results have been derived by fixing atmospheric parameters typical of a red clump star (Teff=4750K, logg=2.5). For some targets, the metallicity could not be derived.

- We present the analysis of 35.5deg^2^ of images in the 1-0 S(1) line of H_2_ from the UK Widefield Infrared Survey for H_2_ (UWISH2) towards Cassiopeia and Auriga. We have identified 98 Molecular Hydrogen emission-line Objects (MHOs) driven by Young Stellar Objects, 60 per cent of which are bipolar outflows and all are new discoveries. We estimate that the UWISH2-extended emission object catalogue contains fewer than 2 per cent false positives and is complete at the 95 per cent level for jets and outflows brighter than the UWISH2 detection limit. We identified reliable driving source candidates for three quarters of the detected outflows, 40 per cent of which are associated with groups and clusters of stars. The driving source candidates are 20 per cent protostars, the remainder are Classical T-Tauri Stars. We also identified 15 new star cluster candidates near MHOs in the survey area. We find that the typical outflow identified in the sample has the following characteristics: the position angles are randomly orientated; bipolar outflows are straight within a few degrees; the two lobes are slightly asymmetrical in length and brightness; the length and brightness of the lobes are not correlated; typical time gaps between major ejections of material are 1-3 kyr, hence FU-Ori or EX-Ori eruptions are most likely not the cause of these, but we suggest MNors as a possible source. Furthermore, we find that outflow lobe length distributions are statistically different from the widely used total length distributions. There are a larger than expected number of bright outflows indicating that the flux distribution does not follow a power law.

- Jets and outflows from young stellar objects (YSOs) are important signposts of currently ongoing star formation. In order to study these objects, we are conducting an unbiased survey along the Galactic plane in the 1-0 S(1) emission line of molecular hydrogen at 2.122 um using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. In this paper, we are focusing on a 33-deg^2^-sized region in Serpens and Aquila (18{deg}<l<30{deg}; -1.5{deg}<b<+1.5{deg}). We trace 131 jets and outflows from YSOs, which results in a 15-fold increase in the total number of known molecular hydrogen outflows. Compared to this, the total integrated 1-0 S(1) flux of all objects just about doubles, since the known objects occupy the bright end of the flux distribution. Our completeness limit is 3x10^-18^W/m^2^ with 70 per cent of the objects having fluxes of less than 10^-17^W/m^2^.

- Searches for gravitational microlensing events are traditionally concentrated on the central regions of the Galactic bulge but many microlensing events are expected to occur in the Galactic plane, far from the Galactic Center. Owing to the difficulty in conducting high-cadence observations of the Galactic plane over its vast area, which are necessary for the detection of microlensing events, their global properties were hitherto unknown. Here, we present results of the first comprehensive search for microlensing events in the Galactic plane. We searched an area of almost 3000 square degrees along the Galactic plane (|b|<7{deg}, 0{deg}<l<50{deg}, 190{deg}<l<360{deg}) observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) during 2013-2019 and detected 630 events. We demonstrate that the mean Einstein timescales of Galactic plane microlensing events are on average three times longer than those of Galactic bulge events, with little dependence on the Galactic longitude. We also measure the microlensing optical depth and event rate as a function of Galactic longitude and demonstrate that they exponentially decrease with the angular distance from the Galactic Center (with the characteristic angular scale length of 32{deg}). The average optical depth decreases from 0.5x10^-6^ at l=10{deg} to 1.5x10^-8^ in the Galactic anticenter. We also find that the optical depth in the longitude range 240{deg}<l<330{deg} is asymmetric about the Galactic equator, which we interpret as a signature of the Galactic warp.

- The catalog represents a survey of a portion of the galactic plane at a wavelength of 100 micrometers with a balloon-borne, stabilized, 12-inch infrared telescope having a sensitivity of 10(-22) W/m2/Hz. The survey covers 750 square degrees of the sky, including most of the galactic plane between galactic longitudes of 335 and 88 degrees, plus a number of other selected areas of interest. Seventy-two sources have been detected, 60 of which are identified with continuum radio sources, bright nebulae, dark nebulae, and infrared stars. The catalog includes right ascension and declination (B1950.0), galactic coordinates, 100-micrometer peak flux densities, sizes of sources, and identifications.
