- Gas velocity curve along five spiral galaxies
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present the minor-axis kinematics of ionized gas and stars for a sample of 5 spiral galaxies, which are characterized by either a zero or a shallow gas velocity gradient along their major axis. The asymmetric velocity profiles observed along the minor axis of NGC 4064 and NGC 4189 can be explained as due to the presence of a bar. This is also the case of NGC 4178 where the innermost portion of the gaseous disk is nearly face on. In NGC 4424 and NGC 4941, we measured non-zero gas velocities only in the central regions along the minor axis and gas velocities drop to zero at larger radii. This kinematic feature is suggestive of the presence of an orthogonally-rotating gaseous component which is confined in the innermost regions (i.e. an inner polar disk) to be confirmed with integral-field spectroscopy.

- H{alpha} rotation curves for 10 spiral galaxies

- Date:

- Description:
- H{alpha} rotation curves for a sample of 10 late-type spiral galaxies. All rotation curves were derived using Harmonic decomposition method applied to Fabry-Perot velocity fields. We have used the rotation curves combined with pattern speeds from the Tremaine-Weinberg method, to study the dynamics of bars and spiral arms in late-type spiral galaxies.

- Description:
- Edge-on galaxies can offer important insight into galaxy evolution because they are the only systems where the distribution of the different components can be studied both radially and vertically. The HEROES project was designed to investigate the interplay between the gas, dust, stars, and dark matter (DM) in a sample of 7 massive edge-on spiral galaxies. In this second HEROES paper, we present an analysis of the atomic gas content of 6 out of 7 galaxies in our sample. The remaining galaxy was recently analysed according to the same strategy. The primary aim of this work is to constrain the surface density distribution, the rotation curve, and the geometry of the gas disks in a homogeneous way. In addition we identify peculiar features and signs of recent interactions. We have constructed detailed tilted-ring models of the atomic gas disks based on new GMRT 21-cm observations of NGC 973 and UGC 4277 and re-reduced archival HI data of NGC 5907, NGC 5529 IC 2531, and NGC 4217. Potential degeneracies between different models were resolved by requiring good agreement with the data in various representations of the data cubes. From our modelling we find that all but one galaxy are warped along the major axis. In addition, we identify warps along the line of sight in three galaxies. A flaring gas layer is required to reproduce the data for only one galaxy, but (moderate) flares cannot be ruled out for the other galaxies either. A coplanar ring-like structure is detected outside the main disk of NGC 4217, which we suggest could be the remnant of a recent minor merger event. We also find evidence of a radial inflow of 15 +/-5km/s in the disk of NGC 5529, which might be related to the ongoing interaction with two nearby companions. For NGC 5907 the extended, asymmetric, and strongly warped outer regions of the HI disk also suggest a recent interaction. In contrast, the inner disks of these three galaxies (NGC 4217, NGC 5529, and NGC 5907) show regular behaviour and seem largely unaffected by the interactions. Our models further support earlier claims of prominent spiral arms in the disks of IC 2531 and NGC 5529. Finally, we detect a dwarf companion galaxy at a projected distance of 36 kpc from the centre of NGC 973.

- HI synthesis observations in UMa cluster

- Description:
- In this data paper we present the results of an extensive 21 cm-line synthesis imaging survey of 43 spiral galaxies in the nearby Ursa Major cluster using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Detailed kinematic information in the form of position-velocity diagrams and rotation curves is presented in an atlas together with HI channel maps, 21 cm continuum maps, global HI profiles, radial HI surface density profiles, integrated HI column density maps, and HI velocity fields. The relation between the corrected global HI linewidth and the rotational velocities Vmax and Vflat as derived from the rotation curves is investigated. Inclination angles obtained from the optical axis ratios are compared to those derived from the inclined HI disks and the HI velocity fields. The galaxies were not selected on the basis of their HI content but solely on the basis of their cluster membership and inclination which should be suitable for a kinematic analysis. The observed galaxies provide a well-defined, volume limited and equidistant sample, useful to investigate in detail the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relation and the dark matter halos around them.

- Description:
- We present the result of spectroscopic observations of a sample of 73 galaxies, completing the database published in this series of articles. The sample contains mostly low-luminosity early-type objects, including four dwarfs of the Local Group (in particular, deep spectra of NGC 205), 15 dEs or dS0s in the Virgo cluster, and UGC 05442, a spheroidal dwarf of the M81 group. We have measured the central velocity dispersion for all but one object, and determined the major-axis rotation and velocity-dispersion profiles for 59 objects. For the current sample of diffuse (or dwarf) elliptical galaxies, we have compared stellar rotation to velocity dispersion; the analysis suggests that these objects may be nearly rotationally flattened, and therefore that anisotropy may be less important than previously thought.
