- Homogeneous investigations of red giant stars in open clusters contribute to studies of internal evolutionary mixing processes inside stars, which are reflected in abundances of mixing-sensitive chemical elements like carbon, nitrogen, and sodium, while {alpha}- and neutron-capture element abundances are useful in tracing the Galactic chemical evolution. The main aim of this study is a comprehensive chemical analysis of red giant stars in the open cluster IC 4756, including determinations of ^12^C/^13^C and C/N abundance ratios, and comparisons of the results with theoretical models of stellar and Galactic chemical evolution. We used a classical differential model atmosphere method to analyse high-resolution spectra obtained with the FEROS spectrograph on the 2.2m MPG/ESO Telescope. The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances, ^12^C/^13^C ratios, and neutron-capture element abundances were determined using synthetic spectra, and the main atmospheric parameters and abundances of other chemical elements were determined from equivalent widths of spectral lines.

- High-resolution spectra of 13 core helium-burning stars in the thick disk of the Galaxy have been obtained with the SOFIN spectrograph on the Nordic Optical Telescope to investigate abundances of up to 22 chemical elements. Abundances of carbon were studied using the C_2_ Swan (0, 1) band head at 5635.5{AA}. The wavelength interval 7980-8130{AA} with strong CN features was analysed in order to determine nitrogen abundances and 12C/13C isotope ratios. The oxygen abundances were determined from the [O I] line at 6300{AA}. Abundances in the investigated stars suggest that carbon is depleted by about 0.3dex, nitrogen is enhanced by more than 0.4dex and oxygen is unaltered. The 12C/13C ratios are lowered and lie between values 3 and 7 which is in agreement with "cool bottom processing" predictions (Boothroyd & Sackmann, 1999ApJ...510..232B). The C/N ratios in the investigated stars are lowered to values between 0.7 and 1.2 which is less than present day theoretical predictions and call for further studies of stellar mixing processes. Abundance ratios of O, Mg, Eu and other heavy chemical elements to iron in the investigated stars show a pattern characteristic of thick disk stars. The results provide evidence that the thick disk population has a distinct chemical history from the thin disk. The onset of the bulk of SN Ia is suggested to appear at [Fe/H]~-0.6dex.

- We present the results of an extensive survey for rapid pulsators among Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars in {omega} Cen. The observations performed consist of nearly 100 hours of time-series photometry for several off-centre fields of the cluster, as well as low-resolution spectroscopy for a partially overlapping sample. We obtained photometry for some 300 EHB stars, for aro und half of which we are able to recover light curves of sufficient quality to either detect or place meaningful non-detection limits for rapid pulsations. Based on the spectroscopy, we derive reliable values of logg, Teff and logN(He)/N(H) for 38 targets, as well as good estimates of the effective temperature for another nine targets, whose spectra are slightly polluted by a close neighbour in the image. The survey uncovered a total of five rapid variables with multi-periodic oscillations between 85 and 125s. Spectroscopically, they form a homogeneous group of hydrogen-rich subdwarf O stars clustered between 48000 and 54000K. For each of the variables we are able to measure between two and three significant pulsations believed to constitute independent harmonic oscillations. However, the interpretation of the Fourier spectra is not straightforward due to significant fine structure attributed to strong amplitude variations. In addition to the rapid variables, we found an EHB star with an apparently periodic luminosity variation of ~2700s, which we tentatively suggest may be caused by ellipsoidal variations in a close binary.

- Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on Hubble Space Telescope, we have surveyed the far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) populations in the core region of M80. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reveals large numbers of blue and extreme horizontal branch stars and blue stragglers, as well as ~60 objects lying in the region of the CMD where accreting and detached white dwarf binaries are expected. Overall, the blue straggler stars are the most centrally concentrated population, with their radial distribution suggesting a typical blue straggler mass of about 1.2M_{sun}_. However, counterintuitively, the faint blue stragglers are significantly more centrally concentrated than the bright ones and a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test suggest only a 3.5% probability that both faint and bright blue stragglers are drawn from the same distribution. This may suggest that (some) blue stragglers get a kick during their formation. We have also been able to identify the majority of the known X-ray sources in the core with FUV bright stars. One of these FUV sources is a likely dwarf nova that was in eruption at the time of the FUV observations. This object is located at a position consistent with Nova 1860 AD, or T Scorpii. Based on its position, X-ray and UV characteristics, this system is almost certainly the source of the nova explosion. The radial distribution of the X-ray sources and of the cataclysmic variable candidates in our sample suggest masses >1M_{sun}_.

- We present a sample of 8321 candidate Field Horizontal-Branch (FHB) stars selected by automatic spectral classification in the digital data base of the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. The stars are distributed over 8225 square degrees of the southern sky, at |b|>~30{deg}. The average distance of the sample, assuming that they are all FHB stars, is 9.8kpc, and distances of up to ~30kpc are reached. Moderate-resolution spectroscopic follow-up observations and $UBV$ photometry of 125 test sample stars demonstrate that the contamination of the full candidate sample with main-sequence A-type stars is <16%, while it would be up to 50% in a flux-limited sample at high galactic latitudes. Hence more than ~6800 of our FHB candidates are expected to be genuine FHB stars. The candidates are being used as distance probes for high-velocity clouds and for studies of the structure and kinematics of the Galactic halo.

- This paper presents an extensive overview of known and proposed RR Lyrae stars in binaries. The aim is to revise and extend the list with new Galactic field systems. We utilized maxima timings for 11 RRab type stars with suspicious behaviour from the GEOS database, and determined maxima timings from data of sky surveys and our own observations. This significantly extended the number of suitable maxima timings. We modelled the proposed Light Time Effect (LiTE) in O-C diagrams to determine orbital parameters for these systems. In contrast to recent studies, our analysis focused on decades-long periods instead of periods in the order of years. Secondary components were found to be predominantly low-mass objects. However, for two of the stars, RZ Cet and AT Ser, the mass of the suspected companion of more than one solar mass suggests that it is a massive white dwarf, a neutron star or even a black hole. We found that the semi-major axes of the proposed orbits are between 1 and 20au. Because the studied stars belong to the closest RR Lyraes, maximal angular distances between components during orbit should at least be between 1 and 13mas and this improves the chance to detect both stars using current telescopes and interferometers. However, our interpretation of the O-C diagrams as a consequence of the LiTE should be considered as preliminary without reliable spectroscopic measurements. On the other hand, our models give a prediction of the period and radial velocity evolution which should be sufficient for plausible proof of binarity.

- We use 12530 photometrically-selected BHB stars from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 to estimate, the total extinction of the Milky Way in high Galactic latitude, RV and AV in each line of sight. A Bayesian method is developed to estimate the reddening values in the given lines of sight. Based on the most likely values of reddening in multiple colors, we are able to derive the values of RV and AV. We select 94 zero-reddened BHB stars from 7 globular cluster as the template. The reddening in the 4 SDSS colors for the northern Galactic cap are estimated by comparing the field BHB stars with the template stars.

- We present coordinates and available photometric information (either from previous or recent broadband UBV observations, and near-infrared photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalog) for 12,056 stars (11,516 of which are unique) identified in the HK Survey of Beers and colleagues as candidate field horizontal-branch or A-type stars. These stars, in the apparent magnitude range 10<=B<=16.0, were selected using an objective-prism/interference-filter survey technique. The availability of 2MASS information permits assembly of a cleaned version of this catalog, comprising likely blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars or blue stragglers in the color interval [-0.2<=(B-V)_0_<=+0.2].

- We present the results of 22GHz H2O maser observations of a sample of 85 post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) candidate stars, selected on the basis of their OH 1612MHz maser and far-infrared properties. All sources were observed with the Tidbinbilla 70m radio telescope, and 21 detections were made; 86GHz SiO Mopra observations of a subset of the sample are also presented.

- We present coordinates and brightness estimates for 4175 candidate field horizontal-branch and A-type stars, in the magnitude range 10<=B<=15.5, selected using an objective-prism/interference-filter survey technique. The candidates lie primarily in the northern Galactic hemisphere and complement a previously published sample of southern Galactic hemisphere candidates. Available spectroscopy and photometry indicates that the great majority of the candidates are likely to be bona fide members of either the field blue horizontal- branch population or the blue, metal-deficient, high surface gravity stars referred to by Preston, Beers, & Schectman (1994AJ....108..538P) as BMP stars. The remaining stars in the catalog are likely to be a mix of metal-deficient turnoff stars, metallic-line (Am) stars, field red horizontal-branch stars, optical doubles with overlapping objective-prism spectra, and (particularly among the fainter candidates) inadvertently included late-type stars.
