- We have measured stellar photometry with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys in near ultraviolet (F275W, F336W), optical (F475W, F814W), and near infrared (F110W, F160W) bands for 117 million resolved stars in M31. As part of the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury survey, we measured photometry with simultaneous point-spread function (PSF) fitting across all bands and at all source positions after precise astrometric image alignment (<5-10mas accuracy). In the outer disk, the photometry reaches a completeness-limited depth of F475W~28, while in the crowded, high surface brightness bulge, the photometry reaches F475W~25. We find that simultaneous photometry and optimized measurement parameters significantly increase the detection limit of the lowest-resolution filters (WFC3/IR) providing color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) that are up to 2.5mag deeper when compared with CMDs from WFC3/IR photometry alone. We present extensive analysis of the data quality including comparisons of luminosity functions and repeat measurements, and we use artificial star tests to quantify photometric completeness, uncertainties and biases. We find that the largest sources of systematic error in the photometry are due to spatial variations in the PSF models and charge transfer efficiency corrections.

- We present deep J- and H-band images in the extended Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North field covering an area of 0.22deg^2^. The observations were taken using WIRCam on the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Together with the reprocessed Ks-band image, the 5{sigma} limiting AB magnitudes (in 2" diameter apertures) are 24.7, 24.2, and 24.4 AB mag in the J, H, and Ks bands, respectively. We also release a multiband photometry and photometric redshift catalog containing 93598 sources. For non-X-ray sources, we obtained a photometric redshift accuracy {sigma}_NMAD_=0.036 with an outlier fraction {eta}=7.3%. For X-ray sources, which are mainly active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we cross-matched our catalog with the updated 2M-CDFN X-ray catalog from Xue+ (2016, J/ApJS/224/15) and found that 658 out of 683 X-ray sources have counterparts. GALEX UV data are included in the photometric redshift computation for the X-ray sources to give {sigma}_NMAD_=0.040 with {eta}=10.5%. Our approach yields more accurate photometric redshift estimates compared to previous works in this field. In particular, by adopting AGN-galaxy hybrid templates, our approach delivers photometric redshifts for the X-ray counterparts with fewer outliers compared to the 3D-Hubble Space Telescope catalog, which fit these sources with galaxy-only templates.

- A spherically symmetric dust radiative transfer code is used to model the circumstellar dust shell around IRC +10 216. Compared to numerous previous models a much larger body of observational data is used as constraints; the spectral energy distribution between 0.5 and 60000{mu}m, 2-4{mu}m and 8-23{mu}m spectra, optical, far-infrared and centimeter sizes and interferometric visibility curves between 1.6 and 11.2{mu}m are used to constrain the model. The most important result is that in order to fit the visibility curve at 2.2{mu}m and the size of the shell in the optical, scattering has to be invoked.

- We investigate the circumstellar disc fraction as determined from L-band excess observations of the young, massive Arches and Quintuplet clusters residing in the central molecular zone of the Milky Way. The Quintuplet cluster was searched for L-band excess sources for the first time. We find a total of 26 excess sources in the Quintuplet cluster, and 21 sources with L-band excesses in the Arches cluster, of which 13 are new detections. With the aid of proper motion membership samples, the disc fraction of the Quintuplet cluster could be derived for the first time to be 4.0+/-0.7. There is no evidence for a radially varying disc fraction in this cluster. In the case of the Arches cluster, a disc fraction of 9.2+/-1.2 approximately out to the cluster's predicted tidal radius, r<1.5pc (Habibi et al., 2013A&A...556A..26H, Cat. J/A+A/556/A26), is found. This excess fraction is consistent with our previously found disc fraction in the cluster in the radial range 0.3<r<0.8pc. In both clusters, the host star mass range covers late A to early B-type stars, 2<M<15M_{sun}, as derived from J-band photospheric magnitudes. We discuss the unexpected finding of dusty circumstellar discs in these UV intense environments in the context of primordial disc survival and formation scenarios of secondary discs. We consider the possibility that the L-band excess sources in the Arches and Quintuplet clusters could be the high-mass counterparts to T Tauri pre-transitional discs. As such a scenario requires a long pre-transitional disc lifetime in a UV intense environment, we suggest that mass transfer discs in binary systems are a likely formation mechanism for the B-star discs observed in these starburst clusters.

- Results of observations with the Spitzer, Hubble, GALEX, Chandra, and XMM-Newton space telescopes are presented for the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) merger Markarian 266. The SW (Seyfert 2) and NE (LINER) nuclei reside in galaxies with Hubble types SBb (pec) and S0/a (pec), respectively. Both companions are more luminous than L* galaxies and they are inferred to each contain a {approx}2.5x10^8^M_{sun}_ black hole. Although the nuclei have an observed hard X-ray flux ratio of f_X_(NE)/f_X_(SW)=6.4, Mrk 266 SW is likely the primary source of a bright Fe K{alpha} line detected from the system, consistent with the reflection-dominated X-ray spectrum of a heavily obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). Optical knots embedded in an arc with aligned radio continuum radiation, combined with luminous H_2_line emission, provide evidence for a radiative bow shock in an AGN-driven outflow surrounding the NE nucleus. A soft X-ray emission feature modeled as shock-heated plasma with T~10^7^K is cospatial with radio continuum emission between the galaxies. Mid-infrared diagnostics provide mixed results, but overall suggest a composite system with roughly equal contributions of AGN and starburst radiation powering the bolometric luminosity. Approximately 120 star clusters have been detected, with most having estimated ages less than 50Myr. Detection of 24{mu}m emission aligned with soft X-rays, radio continuum, and ionized gas emission extending ~34" (20kpc) north of the galaxies is interpreted as ~2x10^7^M_{sun}_ of dust entrained in an outflowing superwind. At optical wavelengths this Northern Loop region is resolved into a fragmented morphology indicative of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in an expanding shell of ionized gas. Mrk 266 demonstrates that the dust "blow-out" phase can begin in a LIRG well before the galaxies fully coalesce during a subsequent ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) phase, and rapid gas consumption in luminous dual AGNs with kiloparsec-scale separations early in the merger process may explain the paucity of detected binary QSOs (with parsec-scale orbital separations) in spectroscopic surveys. An evolutionary sequence is proposed representing a progression from dual to binary AGNs, accompanied by an increase in observed L_x_/L_ir_ ratios by over two orders of magnitude.

- The IRAS 16362-4845 star-forming site in the RCW 108 complex contains an embedded compact cluster that includes some massive O-type stars. Star formation in the complex, and in particular in IRAS 16362-4845, has been proposed to be externally triggered by the action of NGC 6193. We present a photometric study of the IRAS 16362-4845 cluster sensitive enough to probe the massive brown dwarf regime. In particular, we try to verify an apparent scarcity of solar-type and low-mass stars reported in a previous paper (Comeron et al., 2005A&A...433..955C).

- The Planck mission, thanks to its large frequency range and all-sky coverage, has a unique potential for systematically detecting the brightest, and rarest, submillimetre sources on the sky, including distant objects in the high-redshift Universe traced by their dust emission. A novel method, based on a component-separation procedure using a combination of Planck and IRAS data, has been validated and characterized on numerous simulations, and applied to select the most luminous cold submillimetre sources with spectral energy distributions peaking between 353 and 857GHz at 5' resolution. A total of 2151 Planck high-z source candidates (the PHZ) have been detected in the cleanest 26% of the sky, with flux density at 545GHz above 500mJy. Embedded in the cosmic infrared background close to the confusion limit, these high-z candidates exhibit colder colours than their surroundings, consistent with redshifts z>2, assuming a dust temperature of Txgal=35K and a spectral index of {beta}xgal=1.5. Exhibiting extremely high luminosities, larger than 10^14^L_{sun}_, the PHZ objects may be made of multiple galaxies or clumps at high redshift, as suggested by a first statistical analysis based on a comparison with number count models. Furthermore, first follow-up observations obtained from optical to submillimetre wavelengths, which can be found in companion papers, have confirmed that this list consists of two distinct populations. A small fraction (around 3%) of the sources have been identified as strongly gravitationally lensed star-forming galaxies at redshift 2 to 4, while the vast majority of the PHZ sources appear as overdensities of dusty star-forming galaxies, having colours consistent with being at z>2, and may be considered as proto-cluster candidates. The PHZ provides an original sample, which is complementary to the Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich Catalogue (PSZ2); by extending the population of virialized massive galaxy clusters detected below z<1.5 through their SZ signal to a population of sources at z>1.5, the PHZ may contain the progenitors of today's clusters. Hence the Planck list of high-redshift source candidates opens a new window on the study of the early stages of structure formation, particularly understanding the intensively star-forming phase at high-z.

- In order to construct a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe) unbiased by dust extinction, we first selected the 1358 sources in the IRAS Point Source Catalog north of J2000 declination DE=-40{deg} having measured S(25{mu}m)>=1 Jy and colors characteristic of PNe: detections or upper limits consistent with both S(12{mu}m)<=0.35S(25{mu}m) and S(25{mu}m)>=0.35S(60{mu}m). The majority are radio-quiet contaminating sources such as asymptotic giant branch stars. Free-free emission from genuine PNe should make them radio sources. The 1.4 GHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) images and source catalog were used to reject radio-quiet mid-infrared sources. We identified 454 IRAS sources with radio sources brighter than S~2.5 mJy/beam (equivalent to T~0.8K in the 45" FHWM NVSS beam) by positional coincidence. They comprise 332 known PNe in the Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae and 122 candidate PNe, most of which lie at very low Galactic latitudes. Exploratory optical spectroscopic observations suggest that most of these candidates are indeed PNe optically dimmed by dust extinction, although some contamination remains from H II regions, Seyfert galaxies, etc. Furthermore, the NVSS failed to detect only 4% of the known PNe in our infrared sample. Thus it appears that radio selection can greatly improve the reliability of PN candidate samples without sacrificing completeness.

- We present medium-resolution (R~700) near-infrared (lambda=1-2.5m) spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). A narrow slit was used which sampled discrete locations within the nebulae; observations were obtained at one or more positions in the 41 objects included in the survey. The PN spectra fall into one of four general categories: HI emission line-dominated PNe, HI and H_2_ emission line PNe, H_2_ emission line-dominated PNe, and continuum-dominated PNe. These categories correlate with morphological type, with the elliptical PNe falling into the first group, and the bipolar PNe primarily in the H_2_ and continuum emission groups. The categories also correlate with C/O ratio, with the O-rich objects generally falling into the first group and the C-rich objects in the other groups. Other spectral features were observed in all categories, such as continuum emission from the central star, C_2_, CN, and CO emission, and warm dust continuum emission toward the long wavelength end of the spectra. Molecular hydrogen was detected for the first time in four PNe. An excitation analysis was performed using the H_2_ line ratios for all of the PN spectra in the survey where a sufficient number of lines were observed.
