- Description:
- The accuracy of the Hubble constant measured with extragalactic Cepheids depends on robust photometry and background estimation in the presence of stellar crowding. The conventional approach accounts for crowding by sampling backgrounds near Cepheids and assuming that they match those at their positions. We show a direct consequence of crowding by unresolved sources at Cepheid sites is a reduction in the fractional amplitudes of their light curves. We use a simple analytical expression to infer crowding directly from the light curve amplitudes of >200 Cepheids in three Type Ia supernovae hosts and NGC4258 as observed by Hubble Space Telescope-the first near-infrared amplitudes measured beyond the Magellanic Clouds. Where local crowding is minimal, we find near-infrared amplitudes match Milky Way Cepheids at the same periods. At greater stellar densities we find that the empirically measured amplitudes match the values predicted (with no free parameters) from crowding assessed in the conventional way from local regions, confirming their accuracy for estimating the background at the Cepheid locations. Extragalactic Cepheid amplitudes would need to be ~20% smaller than measured to indicate additional, unrecognized crowding as a primary source of the present discrepancy in H0. Rather, we find the amplitude data constrains a systematic mis-estimate of Cepheid backgrounds to be 0.029R+/-0.037mag, more than 5x smaller than the size of the present ~0.2mag tension in H0. We conclude that systematic errors in Cepheid backgrounds do not provide a plausible resolution to the Hubble tension.

- Zwicky Transient Facility BTS. I.
- Short Name:

- Description:
- The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is performing a three-day cadence survey of the visible northern sky (~3{pi}) with newly found transient candidates announced via public alerts. The ZTF Bright Transient Survey (BTS) is a large spectroscopic campaign to complement the photometric survey. BTS endeavors to spectroscopically classify all extragalactic transients with m_peak_<~18.5mag in either the g_ZTF_ or r_ZTF_ filters, and publicly announce said classifications. BTS discoveries are predominantly supernovae (SNe), making this the largest flux-limited SN survey to date. Here we present a catalog of 761 SNe, classified during the first nine months of ZTF (2018 April 1-2018 December 31). We report BTS SN redshifts from SN template matching and spectroscopic host-galaxy redshifts when available. We analyze the redshift completeness of local galaxy catalogs, the redshift completeness fraction (RCF; the ratio of SN host galaxies with known spectroscopic redshift prior to SN discovery to the total number of SN hosts). Of the 512 host galaxies with SNe Ia, 227 had previously known spectroscopic redshifts, yielding an RCF estimate of 44%{+/-}4%. The RCF decreases with increasing distance and decreasing galaxy luminosity (for z<0.05, or ~200Mpc, RCF~0.6). Prospects for dramatically increasing the RCF are limited to new multifiber spectroscopic instruments or wide-field narrowband surveys. Existing galaxy redshift catalogs are only ~50% complete at r~16.9mag. Pushing this limit several magnitudes deeper will pay huge dividends when searching for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events or sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays or neutrinos.

- HST opt. & H-band obs. of Cepheids in NGC4151
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We derive a distance of 15.8+/-0.4Mpc to the archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 based on the near-infrared Cepheid period-luminosity relation and new Hubble Space Telescope multiband imaging. This distance determination, based on measurements of 35 long-period (P>25d) Cepheids, will support the absolute calibration of the supermassive black hole mass in this system, as well as studies of the dynamics of the feedback or feeding of its active galactic nucleus.

- STUDIES. III. SCUBA-2 450um gal. with MIPS & VLA obs.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/889/80
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We construct a SCUBA-2 450{mu}m map in the COSMOS field that covers an area of 300arcmin^2^ and reaches a 1{sigma} noise level of 0.65mJy in the deepest region. We extract 256 sources detected at 450{mu}m with signal-to-noise ratios >4.0 and analyze the physical properties of their multiwavelength counterparts. We find that most of the sources are at z<~3, with a median of z=1.79_-0.15_^+0.03^%. About 35_-25_^+32^% of our sources are classified as starburst galaxies based on their total star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M_*_). By fitting the far-infrared spectral energy distributions, we find that our 450{mu}m selected sample has a wide range of dust temperatures (20K<~T_d_<~60K), with a median of T_d_=38.3_-0.9_^+0.4^K. We do not find a redshift evolution in dust temperature for sources with L_IR_>10^12^L_{sun}_ at z<3. However, we find a moderate correlation where the dust temperature increases with the deviation from the SFR-M_*_ relation. The increase in dust temperature also correlates with optical morphology, which is consistent with merger-triggered starbursts in submillimeter galaxies. Our galaxies do not show the tight IRX-{beta}_UV_ correlation that has been observed in the local universe. We construct the infrared luminosity functions of our 450{mu}m sources and measure their comoving SFR densities (SFRDs). The contribution of the L_IR_>10^12^L_{sun}_ population to the SFRD rises dramatically from z=0 to 2 ({propto}(1+z)^3.9+/-1.1^) and dominates the total SFRD at z>~2.

- 8um Cores in NGC 891, NGC 3628 and IC 5052
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/895/71
- Date:
- 11 Mar 2022
- Publisher:

- Description:
- To study the vertical distribution of the earliest stages of star formation in galaxies, three edge-on spirals, NGC891, NGC3628, and IC5052, observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) were examined for compact 8{mu}m cores using an unsharp mask technique; 173, 267, and 60 cores were distinguished, respectively. Color-color distributions suggest a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and highly extincted photospheric emission from young stars. The average V-band extinction is ~20mag, equally divided between foreground and core. IRAC magnitudes for the clumps are converted to stellar masses assuming an age of 1Myr, which is about equal to the ratio of the total core mass to the star formation rate in each galaxy. The extinction and stellar mass suggest an intrinsic core radius of ~18pc for 5% star formation efficiency. The half-thickness of the disk of 8{mu}m cores is 105pc for NGC891 and 74pc for IC5052, varying with radius by a factor of ~2. For NGC3628, which is interacting, the half-thickness is 438pc, but even with this interaction, the 8{mu}m disk is remarkably flat, suggesting vertical stability. Small-scale structures like shingles or spirals are seen in the core positions. Very few of the 8{mu}m cores have optical counterparts.

- WISE MIR variability in gamma-ray Seyfert 1 gal.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/255/10
- Date:
- 11 Mar 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Fermi-LAT's detection of {gamma}-rays from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) has received increasing attention. Understanding these {gamma}-NLS1s is of interest because they have some properties similar to blazars, which are known to show rapid and large-amplitude variability. Based on the largest sample of {gamma}-NLS1s (25 sources), we carried out a systematic search for rapid mid-infrared (MIR, 3.4 and 4.6{mu}m) variability using the multiepoch data of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We also compared a few variability properties between {gamma}-NLS1s and {gamma}-ray blazars. Our main results are as follows. (1) Thirteen {gamma}-NLS1s showed significant (>3{sigma}) rapid variability in at least one of the two MIR bands. The MIR emission of these sources is dominated by the synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons in the jet. (2) The {gamma}-NLS1s with flat radio spectra are more variable than those not detected in {gamma}-rays. (3) The {gamma}-NLS1s tend to show smaller amplitude of variability as well as lower duty cycle relative to {gamma}-ray blazars. (4) The {gamma}-NLS1s tend to show a trend of bluer-when-brighter on both intraday and long timescales, similar to {gamma}-ray blazars. (5) The {gamma}-NLS1s that are more variable on long timescales have larger amplitudes of variability and higher duty cycles on intraday timescales. (6) In the majority of cases, the {gamma}-NLS1s fall in the WISE Gamma-ray Blazar Strip (WGS). However, we noted migrations outside of the WGS due to significant variability.

- 120 3<=z<=5 galaxies candidates in CANDELS fields
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/897/44
- Date:
- 11 Mar 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Using the CANDELS photometric catalogs for the Hubble Space Telescope ACS and WFC3, we identified massive evolved galaxies at 3<z<4.5 employing three different selection methods. We find the comoving number density of these objects to be ~2x10^-5^ and 8x10^-6^/Mpc^3^ after correction for completeness for two redshift bins centered at z=3.4, 4.7. We quantify a measure of how much confidence we should have for each candidate galaxy from different selections and what the conservative error estimates propagated into our selection are. Then we compare the evolution of the corresponding number densities and their stellar mass density with numerical simulations, semianalytical models, and previous observational estimates, which shows slight tension at higher redshifts as the models tend to underestimate the number and mass densities. By estimating the average halo masses of the candidates (M_h_~4.2, 1.9, and 1.3x1012M{sun} for redshift bins centered at z=3.4, 4.1, and 4.7), we find them to be consistent with halos that were efficient in turning baryons to stars, relatively immune to the feedback effects, and on the verge of transition into hot-mode accretion. This can suggest the relative cosmological starvation of the cold gas followed by an overconsumption phase in which the galaxy rapidly consumes the available cold gas as one of the possible drivers for the quenching of the massive evolved population at high redshift.

- Structure of 1263 galaxies in Stripe 82 region
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/899/89
- Date:
- 07 Mar 2022 13:26:50
- Publisher:

- Description:
- Establishing a correlation (or lack thereof) between the bimodal color distribution of galaxies and their structural parameters is crucial to understand the origin of bimodality. To achieve that, we have performed a 2D mass-based structural decomposition (bulge+disk) of all disk galaxies (total=1263) in the Herschel imaging area of the Stripe 82 region using Ks-band images from the VICS82 survey. The scaling relations thus derived are found to reflect the internal kinematics and are employed in combination to select an indubitable set of classical- and pseudo-bulge-hosting disk galaxies. The rest of the galaxies (<20%) are marked as disks with "ambiguous" bulges. Pseudo- and classical bulge-disk galaxies exhibit clear bimodality in terms of all stellar parameters (M*, specific star formation rate, r-Ks). All pseudo- bulge-disk galaxies are blue and star forming, and all classical bulge-disk galaxies are red and quiescent with less than 5% digressions. Ambiguous bulge- disk galaxies are intermediate to pseudo- and classical bulge-disk galaxies in the distribution of all structural and stellar parameters. {Delta}<{mu}_eb_>-based on the placement of bulges on the Kormendy relation-is found to be the most efficient single structural indicator of both bulge type and stellar activity. The placement of ambiguous bulge-disk galaxies on scaling relations and the fundamental plane, in addition to their peculiar stellar properties, suggests that they are dominantly part of the green valley.

- Turin-SyCAT, Seyferts multifrequency catalog
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/659/A32
- Date:
- 02 Mar 2022 06:48:51
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the first release of Turin-SyCAT, a multifrequency catalog of Seyfert galaxies. We selected Seyfert galaxies considering criteria based on radio, infrared, and optical properties and starting from sources belonging to hard X-ray catalogs and surveys. We visually inspected optical spectra available for all selected sources. We adopted homogeneous and stringent criteria in the source selection aiming at reducing the possible contamination from other source classes. Our final catalog includes 351 Seyfert galaxies distinguished in 233 type 1 and 118 type 2. Type 1 Seyfert galaxies appear to have mid-IR colors similar to blazars, but are distinguished from them by their radio-loudness. Additionally, Seyfert 2 galaxies have mid-IR colors more similar to quasars than BL Lac objects. As expected from their spectral properties, type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies show a clear distinction when using the u-r color. Finally, we found a tight correlation between the mid-IR fluxes at both 12 and 22 um (i.e., F12 and F22, respectively) and hard X-ray fluxes between 15 and 150 keV. Both Seyfert types appear to follow the same trend and share similar values of the ratios of F12 and F22 to FHX in agreement with expectations of the AGN unification scenario. As future perspectives, the Turin-SyCAT will then be used to search for heavily obscured Seyfert galaxies among unidentified hard X-ray sources, given the correlation between mid-IR and hard X-rays, and to investigate their large-scale environments.

- ASTRODEEP-GS43 catalogue
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/649/A22
- Date:
- 22 Feb 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present ASTRODEEP-GS43, a new multiwavelength photometric catalogue of the GOODS-South field, which builds and improves upon the previously released CANDELS catalogue. We provide photometric fluxes and corresponding uncertainties in 43 optical and infrared bands (25 wide and 18 medium filters), as well as photometric redshifts and physical properties of the 34930 CANDELS H-detected objects, plus an additional sample of 178 H-dropout sources, of which 173 are Ks-detected and 5 IRAC-detected. We keep the CANDELS photometry in 7 bands (CTIOU, Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 and ISAAC-K), and measure from scratch the fluxes in the other 36 (VIMOS, HST ACS, HAWK-I Ks, Spitzer IRAC, and 23 from Subaru SuprimeCAM and Magellan-Baade Fourstar) with state-of-the-art techniques of template-fitting. We then compute new photometric redshifts with three different software tools, and take the median value as best estimate. We finally evaluate new physical parameters from SED fitting, comparing them to previously published ones. Comparing to a sample of 3931 high quality spectroscopic redshifts, for the new photo-z's we obtain a normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) of 0.015 with 3.01% of outliers (0.011, 0.22% on the bright end at I_814_<22.5), similarly to the best available published samples of photometric redshifts, such as the COSMOS UltraVISTA catalogue. The ASTRODEEP-GS43 results are in qualitative agreement with previously published catalogues of the GOODS-South field, improving on them particularly in terms of SED sampling and photometric redshift estimates. The catalogue is available for download from the Astrodeep website.
