- Accretion in disks in Cep OB2
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Description:
- We present accretion rates for a large number of solar-type stars in the Cep OB2 region, based on U-band observations. Our study comprises 95 members of the ~4Myr old cluster Tr 37 (including 20 "transition" objects (TOs)), as well as the only classical T Tauri star (CTTS) in the ~12Myr old cluster NGC 7160. The stars show different disk morphologies, with the majority of them having evolved and flattened disks. The typical accretion rates are about 1 order of magnitude lower than in regions aged 1-2Myr, and we find no strong correlation between disk morphology and accretion rates. Although half of the TOs are not accreting, the median accretion rates of normal CTTS and accreting "transition" disks are similar (~3x10^-9^ and 2x10^-9^M_{sun}_/yr, respectively). Comparison with other regions suggests that the TOs observed at different ages do not necessarily represent the same type of objects, which is consistent with the fact that the different processes that can lead to reduced IR excess/inner disk clearing (e.g., binarity, dust coagulation/settling, photoevaporation, giant planet formation) do not operate on the same timescales.

- ACIS-I observations of NGC 2264
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/455/903
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- This paper's goal is to improve the member census of the NGC 2264 star-forming region and study the origin of X-ray activity in young PMS stars. We analyze a deep, 100ks long, Chandra ACIS observation covering a 17'x17' field in NGC 2264. The preferential detection in X-rays of low-mass PMS stars gives strong indications of their membership. We study X-ray activity as a function of stellar and circumstellar characteristics by correlating the X-ray luminosities, temperatures, and absorptions with optical and near-infrared data from the literature.

- Ae/Be stars of Magellanic Bridge in JHKs
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/658/358
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have found Herbig Ae/Be star candidates in the western region of the Magellanic Bridge. Using the near-infrared camera SIRIUS and the 1.4m telescope IRSF, we surveyed ~3.0{deg}x1.3{deg} (24{deg}<~RA<~36{deg}, -75.0{deg}<~DE<~-73.7{deg}) in the J, H, and Ks bands. On the basis of colors and magnitudes, about 200 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates are selected. Considering the contaminations by miscellaneous sources, such as foreground stars and early-type dwarfs in the Magellanic Bridge, we estimate that about 80 (#40%) of the candidates are likely to be Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also found one concentration of the candidates at the young star cluster NGC 796, strongly suggesting the existence of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Magellanic Bridge. This is the first detection of PMS star candidates in the Magellanic Bridge, and if they are genuine PMS stars, this could be direct evidence of recent star formation. However, the estimate of the number of Herbig Ae/Be stars depends on the fraction of classical Be stars, and thus a more precise determination of the Be star fraction or observations to differentiate between the Herbig Ae/Be stars and classical Be stars are required.

- AFGL 5157 near-IR imaging
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/117/446
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present near-infrared images of the star-forming region AFGL 5157 in the JHK broadband filters and H_2_v=1-0S(1) narrowband filter. The images reveal a dense cluster of stars and infrared nebulosities associated with previously known infrared sources. Of 54 near-infrared sources detected in the nebula, NGC 1985, 12 exhibit infrared excesses typical of T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae/Be stars, and protostars. The magnitude and color distribution of the cluster of stars in the nebula are found to be different from those outside the nebular region. The K'-magnitude distribution of the cluster is quite flat, while the noncluster is peaked toward the low magnitude. The [H-K'] color of the cluster also displays 0.3 mag redder than that of the noncluster. The infrared nebula displays a bright nucleus with two spirals extended to the north and south. In light of the color properties of the nebula, we propose a shell model for the nebular structure that could be formed by star-forming activity of the central cluster.

- Analysis of K2 LCs for members of USco & {rho} Oph
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/155/196
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present an analysis of K2 light curves (LCs) for candidate members of the young Upper Sco (USco) association (~8 Myr) and the neighboring {rho} Oph embedded cluster (~1 Myr). We establish ~1300 stars as probable members, ~80% of which are periodic. The phased LCs have a variety of shapes which can be attributed to physical causes ranging from stellar pulsation and stellar rotation to disk-related phenomena. We identify and discuss a number of observed behaviors. The periods are ~0.2-30 days with a peak near 2 days and the rapid period end nearing breakup velocity. M stars in the young USco region rotate systematically faster than GK stars, a pattern also present in K2 data for the older Pleiades and Praesepe systems. At higher masses (types FGK), the well-defined period-color relationship for slowly rotating stars seen in the Pleiades and Praesepe systems is not yet present in USco. Circumstellar disks are present predominantly among the more slowly rotating M stars in USco, with few disks in the subday rotators. However, M dwarfs with disks rotate faster on average than FGK systems with disks. For four of these disked M dwarfs, we provide direct evidence for disk locking based on the K2 LC morphologies. Our preliminary analysis shows a relatively mass-independent spin-up by a factor of ~3.5 between USco and the Pleiades, then mass-dependent spin-down between Pleiades and Praesepe.

- Berkeley 94 and Berkeley 96 UBVRcIcJHKs
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/435/429
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have performed multiband UBVRcIcJHKs photometry of two young clusters located at large Galactocentric distances in the direction of the Perseus spiral arm. The obtained distances and colour excesses amount to 3.9+/-0.11kpc, E(B-V)=0.62+/-0.05 for Berkeley 94, and 4.3+/-0.15kpc, E(B-V)=0.58+/-0.06 for Berkeley 96. The respective ages, as measured from the comparison of the upper colour-magnitude diagrams to model isochrones, amount to log10Age(yr)=7.5+/-0.07 and 7.0+/-0.07, respectively. A sequence of optical pre-main-sequence (PMS) members is proposed in both clusters. In addition, samples of objects showing (H-Ks) excess are found. Part of these are suggested to be PMS cluster members of lower mass than the optical candidates. The spatial distribution of these sources, the comparison to Galactic models and to the expected number of contaminating distant red galaxies, and the spectral energy distribution in particular cases support this suggestion. The spatial distributions shown by members in different mass ranges can be interpreted in terms of the results from numerical simulations. According to these, different initial conditions and evolutionary dynamical paths are suggested for the clusters. Berkeley 94 would have formed under supervirial conditions, and followed the so-called warm collapse model in its evolution, whereas Berkeley 96 would have formed with a subvirial structure, and would have evolved following a cold collapse path. Both processes would be able to reproduce the suggested degree of mass segregation and their spatial distribution by mass range. Finally, the mass distributions of the clusters, from the most massive stars down to PMS stars around 1.3M_{sun}_, are calculated. An acceptable general agreement with the Salpeter initial mass function slope is found.

- Brown Dwarfs in ChaI Dark Cloud
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/416/555
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile) on 28-May to 03-Jun 1999. The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star-forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and H{alpha} imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, M855 and M915, for spectral type determination. The former filter covers a wavelength range containing spectral features characteristic of M-dwarfs, while the latter lies in a relatively featureless wavelength region for these late-type objects. A correlation was found between spectral type and (M855-M915) colour index for mid- to late M-type objects and early L-type dwarfs. With this method, we identify most of our object candidates as being of spectral type M5 or later. Our results show that there is no strong drop in the number of objects for the latest spectral types, hence brown dwarfs may be as abundant as low-mass stars in this region. Also, both kind of objects have a similar spatial distribution. We derive an index {alpha}=0.6+/-0.1 of the mass function in this region of dispersed star formation, in good agreement with the values obtained in other star forming regions and young clusters. Some of the brown dwarfs have strong H{alpha} emission, suggesting mass accretion. For objects with published infrared photometry, we find that strong H{alpha} emission is related to a mid-infrared excess, indicative of the existence of a circumstellar disk.

- BVI photometry in W5E HII region
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/415/1202
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The aim of this paper is to present the results of photometric investigations of the central cluster of the W5 E HII region as well as a follow-up study of the triggered star formation in and around bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). We have carried out wide-field UBVIc and deep VIc photometry of the W5 E HII region. A distance of ~2.1kpc and a mean age of ~1.3Myr have been obtained for the central cluster. The young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with the region are identified on the basis of near-infrared and mid-infrared observations.

- BVI photometry of young stars in 10 clusters
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/375/1220
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have selected pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in 12 groups of notional ages ranging from 1 to 35Myr, using heterogeneous membership criteria. Using these members we have constructed empirical isochrones in V, V-I colour-magnitude diagrams. This allows us to identify clearly the gap between the radiative main sequence and the convective PMS (the RC gap). We follow the evolution of this gap with age and show that it can be a useful age indicator for groups less than =15 Myr old. We also observe a reduction in absolute spreads about the sequences with age. Finally, the empirical isochrones allow us to place the groups in order of age, independently of theory. The youngest groups can be collated into three sets of similar ages. The youngest set is the ONC, NGC 6530 and IC 5146 (nominally 1Myr); next Cep OB3b, NGC 2362, Ori and NGC 2264 (nominally 3Myr); and finally Ori and IC 348 (nominally 45Myr). This suggests Cep OB3b is younger than previously thought, and IC 348 older. For IC 348 the stellar rotation rate distribution and fraction of stars with discs imply a younger age than we derive. We suggest this is because of the absence of O-stars in this cluster, whose winds and/or ionizing radiation may be an important factor in the removal of discs in other clusters.

- BV(RI)_C_JHK H{alpha} photometry in IC 5146
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- The B0V star BD+46 3474 lies near the front surface of a dense molecular cloud and illuminates the emission/reflection nebula IC 5146. The HAeBe variable BD +46 3471 is embedded in the same cloud, about 10' (3.5pc) away. CCD photometry in BV(RI)_C_ (to V=22) and in JHK (to about K=16.5) has been obtained for the young clusters surrounding each of these two bright stars. Some 100 emission-H{alpha} stars brighter than R=20.5 have been found in the area, most of them in IC 5146. (Among these are two that have spectra resembling a high-excitation Herbig-Haro [HH] object plus a stellar continuum).
