- A complete sample of broad-line AGN from SDSS-DR7
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/243/21
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A new, complete sample of 14584 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.35 is presented, which are uncovered homogeneously from the complete database of galaxies and quasars observed spectroscopically in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release. The stellar continuum is properly removed for each spectrum with significant host absorption line features, and careful analyses of the emission line spectra, particularly in the H{alpha} and H{beta} wavebands, are carried out. The broad Balmer emission line, particularly H{alpha}, is used to indicate the presence of an AGN. The broad H{alpha} lines have luminosities in a range of 10^38.5^-10^44.3^erg/s, and line widths (FWHMs) of 500-34000km/s. The virial black hole masses, estimated from the broad-line measurements, span a range of 10^5.1^-10^10.3^M_{sun}_, and the Eddington ratios vary from -3.3 to 1.3 in logarithmic scale. Other quantities such as multiwavelength photometric properties and flags denoting peculiar line profiles are also included in this catalog. We describe the construction of this catalog and briefly discuss its properties. The catalog is publicly available online. This homogeneously selected AGN catalog, along with the accurately measured spectral parameters, provides the most updated, largest AGN sample data, which will enable further comprehensive investigations of the properties of the AGN population in the low-redshift universe.

- ELQS in SDSS. III. The full ELQS quasar catalog
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/871/258
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We have designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS) to provide a highly complete census of unobscured UV-bright quasars during the cosmic noon, z=2.8-5.0. Here we report the discovery of 70 new quasars in the ELQS South Galactic Cap (ELQS-S) quasar sample, doubling the number of known extremely luminous quasars in 4237.3deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. These observations conclude the ELQS and we present the properties of the full ELQS quasar catalog, containing 407 quasars over 11838.5deg^2^. Our novel ELQS quasar selection strategy resulted in unprecedented completeness at the bright end and allowed us to discover 109 new quasars in total. This marks an increase of ~36% (109/298) in the known population at these redshifts and magnitudes, while we further are able to retain a selection efficiency of ~80%. On the basis of 166 quasars from the full ELQS quasar catalog, which adhere to the uniform criteria of the Two Micron All Sky Survey point source catalog, we measure the bright-end quasar luminosity function (QLF) and extend it one magnitude brighter than previous studies. Assuming a single power law with exponential density evolution for the functional form of the QLF, we retrieve the best-fit parameters from a maximum likelihood analysis. We find a steep bright-end slope of {beta}~-4.1, and we can constrain the bright-end slope to {beta}<=-3.4 with 99% confidence. The density is well modeled by the exponential redshift evolution, resulting in a moderate decrease with redshift ({gamma}~-0.4).

- Host-galaxy NUV-NIR data of 32 superluminous SNe

- Description:
- We present ultraviolet through near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the host galaxies of all superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory prior to 2013 and derive measurements of their luminosities, star formation rates, stellar masses, and gas-phase metallicities. We find that Type I (hydrogen-poor) SLSNe (SLSNe I) are found almost exclusively in low-mass (M_*_<2x10^9^M_{sun}_) and metal-poor (12+log_10_[O/H]<8.4) galaxies. We compare the mass and metallicity distributions of our sample to nearby galaxy catalogs in detail and conclude that the rate of SLSNe I as a fraction of all SNe is heavily suppressed in galaxies with metallicities >~0.5Z_{sun}_. Extremely low metallicities are not required and indeed provide no further increase in the relative SLSN rate. Several SLSN I hosts are undergoing vigorous starbursts, but this may simply be a side effect of metallicity dependence: dwarf galaxies tend to have bursty star formation histories. Type II (hydrogen-rich) SLSNe (SLSNe II) are found over the entire range of galaxy masses and metallicities, and their integrated properties do not suggest a strong preference for (or against) low-mass/low-metallicity galaxies. Two hosts exhibit unusual properties: PTF 10uhf is an SLSN I in a massive, luminous infrared galaxy at redshift z=0.29, while PTF 10tpz is an SLSN II located in the nucleus of an early-type host at z=0.04.

- LaCoSSPAr in the Southern Galactic Cap. I.
- Short Name:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present a spectroscopic redshift catalog from the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in the Southern Galactic Cap (SGC), which is designed to observe all sources (Galactic and extragalactic) by using repeating observations with a limiting magnitude of r=18.1mag in two 20deg^2^ fields. The project is mainly focusing on the completeness of LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Surveys (LEGAS) in the SGC, the deficiencies of source selection methods, and the basic performance parameters of the LAMOST telescope. In both fields, more than 95% of galaxies have been observed. A post-processing has been applied to the LAMOST 1D spectrum to remove the majority of remaining sky background residuals. More than 10000 spectra have been visually inspected to measure the redshift by using combinations of different emission/absorption features with an uncertainty of {sigma}_z_/(1+z)<0.001. In total, 1528 redshifts (623 absorption and 905 emission line galaxies) in Field A and 1570 redshifts (569 absorption and 1001 emission line galaxies) in Field B have been measured. The results show that it is possible to derive redshift from low S/N galaxies with our post-processing and visual inspection. Our analysis also indicates that up to one-fourth of the input targets for a typical extragalactic spectroscopic survey might be unreliable. The multi-wavelength data analysis shows that the majority of mid-infrared-detected absorption (91.3%) and emission line galaxies (93.3%) can be well separated by an empirical criterion of W2-W3=2.4. Meanwhile, a fainter sequence paralleled to the main population of galaxies has been witnessed both in Mr/W2-W3 and M*/W2-W3 diagrams, which could be the population of luminous dwarf galaxies but contaminated by the edge-on/highly inclined galaxies (~30%).

- Description:
- This is the second paper in a series on a new luminous z~5 quasar survey using optical and near-infrared colors. Here we present a new determination of the bright end of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z~5. Combining our 45 new quasars with previously known quasars that satisfy our selections, we construct the largest uniform luminous z~5 quasar sample to date, with 99 quasars in the range of 4.7<=z<5.4 and -29<M_1450_<=-26.8, within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint. We use a modified 1/V_a_ method including flux limit correction to derive a binned QLF, and we model the parametric QLF using maximum likelihood estimation. With the faint-end slope of the QLF fixed as {alpha}=-2.03 from previous deeper samples, the best fit of our QLF gives a flatter bright end slope {beta}=-3.58+/-0.24 and a fainter break magnitude M_1450_^*^=-26.98+/-0.23 than previous studies at similar redshift. Combined with previous work at lower and higher redshifts, our result is consistent with a luminosity evolution and density evolution model. Using the best-fit QLF, the contribution of quasars to the ionizing background at z~5 is found to be 18%-45% with a clumping factor C of 2-5. Our sample suggests an evolution of radio loud fraction with optical luminosity but no obvious evolution with redshift.

- Luminous WISE-selected quasars in SDSS Stripe 82
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/861/37
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a spectroscopically complete sample of 147 infrared-color-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) down to a 22{mu}m flux limit of 20mJy over the ~270deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 region. Most of these sources are in the QSO luminosity regime (Lbol>~10^12^L_{sun}_) and are found out to z~3. We classify the AGNs into three types, finding 57 blue, unobscured Type-1 (broad-lined) sources; 69 obscured, Type-2 (narrow-lined) sources; and 21 moderately reddened Type-1 sources (broad-lined and E(B-V)>0.25). We study a subset of this sample in X-rays and analyze their obscuration to find that our spectroscopic classifications are in broad agreement with low, moderate, and large amounts of absorption for Type-1, red Type-1, and Type-2 AGNs, respectively. We also investigate how their X-ray luminosities correlate with other known bolometric luminosity indicators such as [OIII] line luminosity (L[OIII]) and infrared luminosity (L6{mu}m). While the X-ray correlation with L[OIII] is consistent with previous findings, the most infrared-luminous sources appear to deviate from established relations such that they are either underluminous in X-rays or overluminous in the infrared. Finally, we examine the luminosity function evolution of our sample, and by AGN type, in combination with the complementary, infrared-selected, AGN sample of Lacy et al. (2013), spanning over two orders of magnitude in luminosity. We find that the two obscured populations evolve differently, with reddened Type-1 AGNs dominating the obscured AGN fraction (~30%) for L_5{mu}m_>10^45^erg/s, while the fraction of Type-2 AGNs with L_5{mu}m_<10^45^erg/s rises sharply from 40% to 80% of the overall AGN population.

- Optical and HI properties of galaxies in voids
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/144/16
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have carefully selected a sample of 60 galaxies that reside in the deepest underdensities of geometrically identified voids within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. HI imaging of 55 galaxies with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope reveals morphological and kinematic signatures of ongoing interactions and gas accretion. We probe a total volume of 485Mpc^3^ within the voids, with an angular resolution of 8kpc at an average distance of 85Mpc. We reach column density sensitivities of 5x10^19^/cm^-2^, corresponding to an HI mass limit of 3x10^8^M_{sun}_. We detect HI in 41 galaxies, with total masses ranging from 1.7x10^8^ to 5.5x10^9^M_{sun}_. The upper limits on the 14 non-detections are not inconsistent with their luminosities, given their expected HI mass-to-light ratios. We find that the void galaxies are generally gas-rich, low-luminosity, blue disk galaxies, with optical and HI properties that are not unusual for their luminosity and morphology. The sample spans a range of absolute magnitudes (-16.1>M_r_>-20.4) and colors (0.06<g-r<0.87), and includes disk and irregular galaxies. We also identify three as early-type galaxies, all of which are not detected in HI. All galaxies have stellar masses less than 3x10^10^M_{sun}_, and many have kinematic and morphological signs of ongoing gas accretion, suggesting that the void galaxy population is still in the process of assembling. The small-scale clustering in the void, within 600kpc and 200km/s, is similar to that in higher density regions, and we identify 18 HI-rich neighboring galaxies in the voids. Most are within 100kpc and 100km/s of the targeted galaxy, and we find no significant population of HI-rich low-luminosity galaxies filling the voids, contrary to what is predicted by simulations.

- Description:
- SDF (Subaru Deep Field) line-emitting galaxies in four narrow-band filters at low and intermediate redshifts are presented. Broadband colors, follow-up optical spectroscopy, and multiple NB filters are used to distinguish H{alpha}, [OII], and [OIII] emitters at z=0.07-1.47 to construct their LFs. These LFs are derived down to faint magnitudes, allowing for an accurate determination of the faint-end slope. With a large (N~200) sample for each redshift interval, a Schechter profile is fitted to each LF.

- SDSS Quasar Lens Search. V. Final catalog
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/143/119
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the final statistical sample of lensed quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Lens Search (SQLS). The well-defined statistical lens sample consists of 26 lensed quasars brighter than i=19.1 and in the redshift range of 0.6<z<2.2 selected from 50826 spectroscopically confirmed quasars in the SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7), where we restrict the image separation range to 1"<{theta}<20" and the i-band magnitude differences in two images to be smaller than 1.25mag. The SDSS-DR7 quasar catalog also contains 36 additional lenses identified with various techniques. In addition to these lensed quasars, we have identified 81 pairs of quasars from follow-up spectroscopy, 26 of which are physically associated binary quasars. The statistical lens sample covers a wide range of image separations, redshifts, and magnitudes, and therefore is suitable for systematic studies of cosmological parameters and surveys of the structure and evolution of galaxies and quasars.

- SFR for WISE + SDSS spectroscopic galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/219/8
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We combine Sloan Digitital Sky Survey (SDSS) and WISE photometry for the full SDSS spectroscopic galaxy sample, creating spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that cover {lambda}=0.4-22{mu}m for an unprecedentedly large and comprehensive sample of 858365 present-epoch galaxies. Using MAGPHYS (da Cunha+ 2008MNRAS.388.1595D), we then simultaneously and consistently model both the attenuated stellar SED and the dust emission at 12 and 22{mu}m, producing robust new calibrations for monochromatic mid-IR star formation rate (SFR) proxies. These modeling results provide the first mid-IR-based view of the bimodality in star formation activity among galaxies, exhibiting the sequence of star-forming galaxies ("main sequence") with a slope of dlogSFR/dlogM_*_=0.80 and a scatter of 0.39dex. We find that these new SFRs along the SF main sequence are systematically lower by a factor of 1.4 than those derived from optical spectroscopy. We show that for most present-day galaxies, the 0.4-22{mu}m SED fits can exquisitely predict the fluxes measured by Herschel at much longer wavelengths. Our analysis also illustrates that the majority of stars in the present-day universe are formed in luminous galaxies (~L*) in and around the "green valley" of the color-luminosity plane. We make publicly available the matched photometry catalog and SED modeling results.
