- Description:
- For the first time, we have detected Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 7793. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands on 56 nights in 2003-2005, we have discovered 17 long-period (24-62 days) Cepheids whose periods and mean magnitudes define tight period-luminosity relations. We use the (V-I) Wesenheit index to determine a reddening-free true distance modulus to NGC 7793 of 27.68+/-0.05mag (internal error) +/-0.08mag (systematic error).

- Description:
- We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands during 77 nights in 2002-2003, we have found 143 Cepheids with periods ranging from 5.6 to 175.9 days; 133 of these objects have periods longer than 10 days, making NGC 55 to date the galaxy with the largest known number of long-period Cepheids in the Sculptor Group.

- Araucaria project: Cepheids in WLM galaxy
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We have conducted an extensive wide-field imaging survey for Cepheid variables in the Local Group irregular galaxy WLM. From data obtained on 101 nights, we have discovered 60 Cepheids, which include 14 of the 15 Cepheid variables previously detected by Sandage and Carlson. Our Cepheid survey in WLM should be practically complete down to a period of 3-days. Importantly, we have found for the first time a long-period Cepheid (P=54.2-days) in this galaxy, alleviating the problem that WLM with its many blue, massive stars does not contain Cepheids with periods longer than about 10-days.

- BVI photometry of NGC 4258 Cepheids
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/652/1133
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present initial results from a time series BVI survey of two fields in NGC 4258 using the HST ACS. This galaxy was selected because of its accurate maser-based distance, which is anticipated to have a total uncertainty of 3%. The goal of the HST observations is to provide an absolute calibration of the Cepheid distance scale and to measure its dependence on chemical abundance (the so-called metallicity effect). We carried out observations of two fields at different galactocentric distances with a mean abundance difference of 0.5dex. We discovered a total of 281 Cepheids with periods ranging from 4 to 45 days (the duration of our observing window).

- BV(RI)c bands of Cepheids in IC 1613
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/445/901
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A set of six BV(RI)c observations collected with the WFI at the ESO 2.2m telescope have been used to derive multicolor data of Cepheids in IC 1613 identified in previous surveys. Since part of the previously known data were obtained only in V,I filters or without filter (Wh) bands, the method of Freedman has been applied to get reliable mean intensity values of Cepheid magnitudes in the various bands. The resulting slopes of the relations in the BVI bands are similar, within the uncertainties, to those previously obtained by other authors for the LMC. The distribution of the Cepheids in the period-color diagrams is compatible with a change near P about 10d as observed in LMC. The distribution in the color-color diagrams is more similar to that in SMC, and this should be related to the very low metallicity of the galaxy.

- BVRIJHK photometry of the 2008 OT in NGC 300

- Description:
- The 2008 optical transient in NGC 300 is one of a growing class of intermediate-luminosity transients that brighten several orders of magnitude from a previously optically obscured state. The origin of their eruptions is not understood. Our multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy from maximum light to more than a year later provide a record of its post-eruption behavior. We describe its changing spectral energy distribution, the evolution of its absorption- and emission-line spectrum, the development of a bipolar outflow, and the rapid transition from a dense wind to an optically thin ionized wind. In addition to strong, narrow hydrogen lines, the F-type absorption-line spectrum of the transient is characterized by strong CAII and [CAII] emission. The very broad wings of the CAII triplet and the asymmetric [CAII] emission lines are due to strong Thomson scattering in the expanding ejecta. Post-maximum, the hydrogen and CaII lines developed double-peaked emission profiles that we attribute to a bipolar outflow. Between approximately 60 and 100 days after maximum, the F-type absorption spectrum, formed in its dense wind, weakened and the wind became transparent to ionizing radiation. We discuss the probable evolutionary state of the transient and similar objects such as SN 2008S and conclude that they were most likely post-red supergiants or post-asymptotic giant branch stars on a blue loop to warmer temperatures when the eruption occurred. These objects are not luminous blue variables.

- BVRI photometry of luminous stars in M31 and M33
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/154/81
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the first four years of BVRI photometry from an on-going survey to annually monitor the photometric behavior of evolved luminous stars in M31 and M33. Photometry was measured for 199 stars at multiple epochs, including 9 classic Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs), 22 LBV candidates, 10 post-RGB A/F type hypergiants, and 18 B[e] supergiants. At all epochs, the brightness is measured in the V-band and at least one other band to a precision of 0.04-0.10 mag down to a limiting magnitude of 19.0-19.5. Thirty three stars in our survey exhibit significant variability, including at least two classic LBVs caught in S Doradus-type outbursts. - Cepheids and companions in M33 from HST images

- Description:
- A precise and accurate determination of the Hubble constant based on Cepheid variables requires proper characterization of many sources of systematic error. One of these is stellar blending, which biases the measured fluxes of Cepheids and the resulting distance estimates. We study the blending of 149 Cepheid variables in M33 by matching archival Hubble Space Telescope data with images obtained at the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO (WIYN) 3.5m telescope, which differ by a factor of 10 in angular resolution. We find that 55%+/-4% of the Cepheids have no detectable nearby companions that could bias the WIYN V-band photometry, while the fraction of Cepheids affected below the 10% level is 73%+/-4%. The corresponding values for the I band are 60%+/-4% and 72%+/-4%, respectively. We find no statistically significant difference in blending statistics as a function of period or surface brightness. Additionally, we report all the detected companions within 2" of the Cepheids (equivalent to 9pc at the distance of M33) which may be used to derive empirical blending corrections for Cepheids at larger distances.

- Description:
- The accuracy of the Hubble constant measured with extragalactic Cepheids depends on robust photometry and background estimation in the presence of stellar crowding. The conventional approach accounts for crowding by sampling backgrounds near Cepheids and assuming that they match those at their positions. We show a direct consequence of crowding by unresolved sources at Cepheid sites is a reduction in the fractional amplitudes of their light curves. We use a simple analytical expression to infer crowding directly from the light curve amplitudes of >200 Cepheids in three Type Ia supernovae hosts and NGC4258 as observed by Hubble Space Telescope-the first near-infrared amplitudes measured beyond the Magellanic Clouds. Where local crowding is minimal, we find near-infrared amplitudes match Milky Way Cepheids at the same periods. At greater stellar densities we find that the empirically measured amplitudes match the values predicted (with no free parameters) from crowding assessed in the conventional way from local regions, confirming their accuracy for estimating the background at the Cepheid locations. Extragalactic Cepheid amplitudes would need to be ~20% smaller than measured to indicate additional, unrecognized crowding as a primary source of the present discrepancy in H0. Rather, we find the amplitude data constrains a systematic mis-estimate of Cepheid backgrounds to be 0.029R+/-0.037mag, more than 5x smaller than the size of the present ~0.2mag tension in H0. We conclude that systematic errors in Cepheid backgrounds do not provide a plausible resolution to the Hubble tension.

- Cepheids in M31 - PAndromeda Cepheid sample
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/156/130
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the largest Cepheid sample in M31 based on the complete Pan-STARRS1 survey of Andromeda (PAndromeda) in the r_P1_, i_P1_, and g_P1_ bands. We find 2686 Cepheids with 1662 fundamental-mode Cepheids, 307 first-overtone Cepheids, 278 type II Cepheids, and 439 Cepheids with undetermined Cepheid type. Using the method developed by Kodric et al. (2013, , Cat. J/AJ/145/106), we identify Cepheids by using a three-dimensional parameter space of Fourier parameters of the Cepheid light curves combined with a color cut and other selection criteria. This is an unbiased approach to identify Cepheids and results in a homogeneous Cepheid sample. The period-luminosity relations obtained for our sample have smaller dispersions than in our previous work. We find a broken slope that we previously observed with HST data in Kodric et al. (2013, , Cat. J/AJ/145/106), albeit with a lower significance.
