- The Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey (SHELS) is a complete redshift survey covering two well-separated fields (F1 and F2) of the Deep Lens Survey (DLS). Both fields are more than 94% complete to a Galactic extinction corrected R_0_=20.2. Here, we describe the redshift survey of the F1 field centered at RA=00:53:25.3 and DEC=12:33:55 (J2000); like F2, the F1 field covers ~4deg^2^. The redshift survey of the F1 field includes 9426 new galaxy redshifts measured with Hectospec on the MMT (published here). As a guide to future uses of the combined survey, we compare the mass metallicity relation and the distributions of D_n_4000 as a function of stellar mass and redshift for the two fields. The mass-metallicity relations differ by an insignificant 1.6{sigma}. For galaxies in the stellar mass range 10^10^-10^11^M_{sun}_, the increase in the star-forming fraction with redshift is remarkably similar in the two fields. The seemingly surprising 31%-38% difference in the overall galaxy counts in F1 and F2 is probably consistent with the expected cosmic variance given the subtleties of the relative systematics in the two surveys. We also review the DLS cluster detections in the two fields: poorer photometric data for F1 precluded secure detection of the single massive cluster at z=0.35 that we find in SHELS. Taken together, the two fields include 16055 redshifts for galaxies with R_0_<=20.2 and 20754 redshifts for galaxies with R<=20.6. These dense surveys in two well-separated fields provide a basis for future investigations of galaxy properties and large-scale structure.

- We present time-series photometry in the field of Stock 8 and identified 130 short-period variable stars. Twenty-eight main-sequence and 23 pre-main-sequence variables are found to be part of cluster Stock 8. The main-sequence variables are classified as slow pulsators of the B-type, {beta} Cep, and {delta} Scuti stars. Fourteen main-sequence stars could be new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013, J/A+A/554/A108) and Lata et al. (2011MNRAS.418.1346L; 2012MNRAS.427.1449L; 2014, J/MNRAS/442/273; 2016MNRAS.456.2505L). The age and mass of pre-main-sequence variables are found to be ~<5 Myr and in the mass range of 0.5-2.8 M_{sun}_, respectively. These pre-main-sequence stars could be T-Tauri variables. We have found 5 and 2 of 23 pre-main-sequence variables as classical T-Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars, respectively, whereas 16 pre-main-sequence stars are classified as weak-line T-Tauri stars.

- Our goal is to probe the populations of obscured and unobscured AGN investigating their optical-IR and X-ray properties as a function of X-ray flux, luminosity and redshift within a hard X-ray selected sample with wide multiwavelength coverage. We selected a sample of 136 X-ray sources detected at a significance of >=3{sigma} in the 2-10keV band (F_2-10_>~10^-14^erg/cm^2^/s) in a ~1deg^2^ area in the XMM Medium Deep Survey (XMDS, Cat. <J/A+A/439/413>). The XMDS area is covered with optical photometry from the VVDS and CFHTLS surveys and infrared Spitzer data from the SWIRE survey. Based on the X-ray luminosity and X-ray to optical ratio, 132 sources are likely AGN, of which 122 have unambiguous optical - IR identification. The observed optical and IR spectral energy distributions of all identified sources are fitted with AGN/galaxy templates in order to classify them and compute photometric redshifts. X-ray spectral analysis is performed individually for sources with a sufficient number of counts and using a stacking technique for subsamples of sources at different flux levels. Hardness ratios are used to estimate X-ray absorption in individual weak sources.

- We present a spectroscopic survey of the stellar population of the {sigma} Orionis cluster. We have obtained spectral types for 340 stars. Spectroscopic data for spectral typing come from several spectrographs with similar spectroscopic coverage and resolution. More than half of the stars in our sample are members confirmed by the presence of lithium in absorption, strong H{alpha} in emission or weak gravity-sensitive features. In addition, we have obtained high-resolution (R~34000) spectra in the H{alpha} region for 169 stars in the region. Radial velocities were calculated from this data set. The radial velocity distribution for members of the cluster is in agreement with previous work. Analysis of the profile of the H{alpha} line and infrared observations reveals two binary systems or fast rotators that mimic the H{alpha} width expected in stars with accretion disks. On the other hand, there are stars with optically thick disks and narrow H{alpha} profiles not expected in stars with accretion disks. This contribution constitutes the largest homogeneous spectroscopic data set of the {sigma} Orionis cluster to date.

- For decades ever since the early detection in the 1990s of the emission spectral features of crystalline silicates in oxygen-rich evolved stars, there is a long-standing debate on whether the crystallinity of the silicate dust correlates with the stellar mass-loss rate. To investigate the relation between the silicate crystallinities and the mass-loss rates of evolved stars, we carry out a detailed analysis of 28 nearby oxygen-rich stars. We derive the mass-loss rates of these sources by modelling their spectral energy distributions from the optical to the far-infrared. Unlike previous studies in which the silicate crystallinity was often measured in terms of the crystalline-to-amorphous silicate mass ratio, we characterize the silicate crystallinities of these sources with the flux ratios of the emission features of crystalline silicates to that of amorphous silicates. This does not require the knowledge of the silicate dust temperatures, which are the major source of uncertainties in estimating the crystalline-to-amorphous silicate mass ratio. With a Pearson correlation coefficient of ~-0.24, we find that the silicate crystallinities and the mass-loss rates of these sources are not correlated. This supports the earlier findings that the dust shells of low mass-loss rate stars can contain a significant fraction of crystalline silicates without showing the characteristic features in their emission spectra.

- The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has a goal of detecting small planets orbiting stars bright enough for mass determination via ground-based radial velocity observations. Here, we present estimates of how many exoplanets the TESS mission will detect, the physical properties of the detected planets, and the properties of the stars that those planets orbit. This work uses stars drawn from the TESS Input Catalog (TIC) Candidate Target List and revises yields from prior studies that were based on Galactic models. We modeled the TESS observing strategy to select approximately 200000 stars at 2-minute cadence, while the remaining stars are observed at 30-minute cadence in full-frame image data. We placed zero or more planets in orbit around each star, with physical properties following measured exoplanet occurrence rates, and used the TESS noise model to predict the derived properties of the detected exoplanets. In the TESS 2-minute cadence mode we estimate that TESS will find 1250+/-70 exoplanets (90% confidence), including 250 smaller than 2R_{Earth}_. Furthermore, we predict that an additional 3100 planets will be found in full-frame image data orbiting bright dwarf stars and more than 10000 around fainter stars. We predict that TESS will find 500 planets orbiting M dwarfs, but the majority of planets will orbit stars larger than the Sun. Our simulated sample of planets contains hundreds of small planets amenable to radial velocity follow-up, potentially more than tripling the number of planets smaller than 4R_{Earth}_ with mass measurements. This sample of simulated planets is available for use in planning follow-up observations and analyses.

- In the framework of understanding the gas and stellar kinematics and their relations to AGNs and galaxy evolution scenarios, we present spatially resolved distributions and kinematics of the stars and gas in the central ~800-pc radius of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. We obtained H + K- and K-band near-infrared (NIR) integral-field observations from VLT/SINFONI. Our results reveal strong broad and narrow emission-line components of ionized gas (hydrogen recombination lines Pa{alpha} and Br{gamma}) in the nuclear region, as well as hot dust with a temperature of ~1300K, both typical for type-1 AGNs. From M_BH_-{sigma}* and the broad components of hydrogen recombination lines, we find a black-hole mass of (5-10)x10^6^M_{sun}_. In the central ~800pc, we find a hot molecular gas mass of ~615M , which corresponds to a cold molecular gas reservoir of (2-8)x10^8^M_{sun}_. However, there is a molecular gas deficiency in the nuclear region. The gas and stellar-velocity maps both show rotation patterns consistent with the large-scale rotation of the galaxy. However, the gaseous and stellar kinematics show deviations from pure disk rotation, which suggest streaming motions in the central <200pc and a velocity twist at the location of the ring which indicates deviations in disk and ring rotation velocities in accordance with published CO kinematics. We detect a blueshifted emission line split in Pa{alpha}, associated with the nuclear region only. We investigate the star-formation properties of the hot spots in the circumnuclear ring which have starburst ages of 10Myr and find indications for an age gradient on the western side of the ring. In addition, our high-resolution data reveal further substructure within this ring which also shows enhanced star forming activity close to the nucleus.

- We searched for the SiO J=1-0, v=1 and 2 maser lines at ~43GHz in 277 2MASS/MSX/IRAS sources off the Galactic plane (|b|>~3{deg}), which resulted in 119 (112 new) detections. Among the new detections, two are very faint objects with MSX 12{mu}m flux densities below 2Jy. These are likely to be O-rich AGB-stars associated with dwarf-galaxy tidal tails. The sample also includes medium bright MSX objects at moderately high galactic latitudes (3{deg}<|b|<5{deg}) and in the IRAS gap at higher latitudes. A signature of a warp of the inner Galactic disk is found for a disk subsample. This warp appears relatively strongly in the area of 0{deg}<l<45{deg} and 3{deg}<|b|<5{deg}. We also found a group of stars that does not follow to the Galactic rotation. This feature appears in the Galactic disk at l~27{deg}, and extends more than 15{deg} in the galactic latitude, like a stream of tidal debris from a dwarf galaxy.

- The observations in the 28SiO J=1-0 v=1, J=1-0 v=2 lines and the 29SiO J=1-0, v=0 lines were simultaneously made toward 181 color-selected IRAS sources in the outer disk of the Galaxy (at longitudes between 90 deg and 250 deg). The 28SiO lines were detected in 63 sources (56 new) and the 29SiO line in 11 sources (9 new). Most of the detections are optically variable stars, mainly Mira-type variables and a few semiregular variables. The detection rate (35%) is much lower than that of the bulge survey performed by the same observational system - the 45m telescope at Nobeyama Radio Observatory. The lower detection rate of SiO maser emission is partly attributed to the increase of contaminations by stars with C-rich circumstellar envelopes and young stellar objects in the outer disk sample. The kinematical implications of the observational results are also discussed. The luminosity distances to the SiO maser sources are estimated from their IRAS fluxes at 12um and colors. By combining the SiO radial velocity and the luminosity distance, the rotation curve of the outer Galactic disk is found to be slightly falling within the Galactocentric distance between 8.5 and 12kpc. The sources located within 20deg from the Galactic anticenter direction are used to check for a peculiar motion of the local standard of rest.
