- Transition disks offer the extraordinary opportunity to look for newly born planets and investigate the early stages of planet formation. In this context we observed the Herbig A5 star MWC 758 with the L'-band vector vortex coronagraph installed in the near infrared camera and spectrograph NIRC2 at the Keck II telescope, with the aim of unveiling the nature of the spiral structure by constraining the presence of planetary companions in the system. Our high-contrast imaging observations show a bright ({Delta}L'=7.0+/-0.3mag) point-like emission, south of MWC 758 at a deprojected separation of ~20au (r=0.111"+/-0.004") from the central star. We also recover the two spiral arms (south-east and north-west), already imaged by previous studies in polarized light, and discover a third one to the south-west of the star. No additional companions were detected in the system down to 5 Jupiter masses beyond 0.6" from the star. We propose that the bright L' band emission could be caused by the presence of an embedded and accreting protoplanet, although the possibility of it being an asymmetric disk feature cannot be excluded. The spiral structure is probably not related to the protoplanet candidate, unless on an inclined and eccentric orbit, and it could be due to one (or more) yet undetected planetary companions at the edge of or outside the spiral pattern. Future observations and additional simulations will be needed to shed light on the true nature of the point-like source and its link with the spiral arms.

- We present an updated UBVRI photometric catalog containing 970 objects in the field of M31, selected from the Revised Bologna Catalog (RBC v.4.0), including 965, 967, 965, 953, and 827 sources in the individual UBVRI bands, respectively, of which 205, 123, 14, 126, and 109 objects do not have previously published photometry. Photometry is performed using archival images from the Local Group Galaxies Survey, which covers 2.2deg^2^ along the major axis of M31. Detailed comparisons show that our photometry is fully consistent with previous measurements in all filters. We focus on 445 confirmed "globular-like" clusters and candidates, comprising typical globular and young massive clusters. The ages and masses of these objects are derived by comparing their observed spectral-energy distributions with simple stellar population synthesis. Approximately half of the clusters are younger than 2Gyr, suggesting that there has been significant recent active star formation in M31, which is consistent with previous results.

- Ariel has been selected as ESA's M4 mission for launch in 2028 and is designed for the characterization of a large and diverse population of exoplanetary atmospheres to provide insights into planetary formation and evolution within our Galaxy. Here we present a study of Ariel's capability to observe currently known exoplanets and predicted Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discoveries. We use the Ariel radiometric model (ArielRad) to simulate the instrument performance and find that ~2000 of these planets have atmospheric signals which could be characterized by Ariel. This list of potential planets contains a diverse range of planetary and stellar parameters. From these we select an example mission reference sample (MRS), comprised of 1000 diverse planets to be completed within the primary mission life, which is consistent with previous studies. We also explore the mission capability to perform an in-depth survey into the atmospheres of smaller planets, which may be enriched or secondary. Earth-sized planets and super-Earths with atmospheres heavier than H/He will be more challenging to observe spectroscopically. However, by studying the time required to observe ~110 Earth-sized/super-Earths, we find that Ariel could have substantial capability for providing in-depth observations of smaller planets. Trade-offs between the number and type of planets observed will form a key part of the selection process and this list of planets will continually evolve with new exoplanet discoveries replacing predicted detections. The Ariel target list will be constantly updated and the MRS re-selected to ensure maximum diversity in the population of planets studied during the primary mission life.

- We present the results of the optical and radio monitoring of the BL Lac object AO 0235+164 during a faint state. In both optical and radio bands the source has been observed at the faintest ever recorded levels, reaching V=19.80 and F_22GHz_=0.34Jy. In the optical bands we still see variability with amplitudes up to 1.5 magnitudes on timescales from days to weeks. The radio variability is less dramatic, but in general follows the optical behaviour. A correlation between general trends in the optical and radio behaviour of AO 0235+164 may be recognized in the data from the present monitoring as well as in the historical light curves, suggesting a `base' mechanism responsible for the emission at both frequencies. A good candidate is a synchrotron process in the relativistic jet. Optical flares with no corresponding radio counterparts have been observed too. These events may be interpreted in terms of microlensing by a foreground galaxy.

- As hundreds of gas giant planets have been discovered, we study how these planets form and evolve in different stellar environments, specifically in multiple stellar systems. In such systems, stellar companions may have a profound influence on gas giant planet formation and evolution via several dynamical effects such as truncation and perturbation. We select 84 Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) with gas giant planet candidates. We obtain high-angular resolution images using telescopes with adaptive optics (AO) systems. Together with the AO data, we use archival radial velocity data and dynamical analysis to constrain the presence of stellar companions. We detect 59 stellar companions around 40 KOIs for which we develop methods of testing their physical association. These methods are based on color information and galactic stellar population statistics. We find evidence of suppressive planet formation within 20 AU by comparing stellar multiplicity. The stellar multiplicity rate (MR) for planet host stars is 0_-0_^+5^% within 20 AU. In comparison, the stellar MR is 18%+/-2% for the control sample, i.e., field stars in the solar neighborhood. The stellar MR for planet host stars is 34%+/-8% for separations between 20 and 200 AU, which is higher than the control sample at 12%+/-2%. Beyond 200 AU, stellar MRs are comparable between planet host stars and the control sample. We discuss the implications of the results on gas giant planet formation and evolution.

- We present the results of polarimetric (R-band) and multicolor photometric (BVRIJHK) observations of the blazar AO 0235+16 during an outburst in 2006 December. The data reveal a short timescale of variability (several hours), which increases from optical to near-IR wavelengths; even shorter variations are detected in polarization. The flux density correlates with the degree of polarization, and at the maximum degree of polarization the electric vector tends to align with the parsec-scale jet direction. We find that a variable component with a steady power-law spectral energy distribution and very high optical polarization (30%-50%) is responsible for the variability. We interpret these properties of the blazar within a model of a transverse shock propagating down the jet. In this case a small change in the viewing angle of the jet, by ~<1{deg}, and a decrease in the shocked plasma compression by a factor of ~1.5 are sufficient to account for the variability.

- We present the first multiband photometry for the semidetached eclipsing binary AO Serpentis, observed on seven nights between 2009 April and July at the Weihai Observatory of Shandong University. By using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney code, the photometric solutions of AO Ser and a similar object V338 Her were (re)deduced. The spectral types and orbital periods are A2 and P=0.8793-days for AO Ser, F1V and P=1.3057-days for V338 Her.

- We present a catalog of 1439 young stellar objects (YSOs) spanning the 1.42deg^2^ field surveyed by the Chandra Carina Complex Project (CCCP), which includes the major ionizing clusters and the most active sites of ongoing star formation within the Great Nebula in Carina. Candidate YSOs were identified via infrared (IR) excess emission from dusty circumstellar disks and envelopes, using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (the Vela-Carina survey) and the Two-Micron All Sky Survey. We model the 1-24um IR spectral energy distributions of the YSOs to constrain physical properties. Our Pan-Carina YSO Catalog (PCYC) is dominated by intermediate-mass (2M_{sun}_<m<~10M_{sun}_) objects with disks, including Herbig Ae/Be stars and their less evolved progenitors. The PCYC provides a valuable complementary data set to the CCCP X-ray source catalogs, identifying 1029 YSOs in Carina with no X-ray detection. We also catalog 410 YSOs with X-ray counterparts, including 62 candidate protostars. Extrapolating over the stellar initial mass function scaled to the PCYC population, we predict a total population of >2x10^4^ YSOs and a present-day star formation rate (SFR) of >0.008M_{sun}_/yr. The global SFR in the Carina Nebula, averaged over the past ~5Myr, has been approximately constant.

- We provide AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey (APASS) photometry in the Landolt BV and Sloan g'r'i' bands for all 425743 stars included in the fourth RAVE Data Release. The internal accuracy of the APASS photometry of RAVE stars, expressed as the error of the mean of data obtained and separately calibrated over a median of four distinct observing epochs and distributed between 2009 and 2013, is 0.013, 0.012, 0.012, 0.014, and 0.021mag for the B, V, g', r', and i' bands, respectively. The equally high external accuracy of APASS photometry has been verified on secondary Landolt and Sloan photometric standard stars not involved in the APASS calibration process and on a large body of literature data on field and cluster stars, confirming the absence of offsets and trends. Compared with the Carlsberg Meridian Catalog (CMC-15), APASS astrometry of RAVE stars is accurate to a median value of 0.098arcsec. Brightness distribution functions for the RAVE stars have been derived in all bands. APASS photometry of RAVE stars, augmented by 2MASS JHK infrared data, has been {chi}^2^ fitted to a densely populated synthetic photometric library designed to widely explore temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and reddening. Resulting T_eff_ and E_B-V_, computed over a range of options, are provided and discussed, and will be kept updated in response to future APASS and RAVE data releases. In the process, we find that the reddening caused by a homogeneous slab of dust, extending for 140pc on either side of the Galactic plane and responsible for E_B-V_^poles^=0.036+/-0.002 at the Galactic poles, is a suitable approximation of the actual reddening encountered at Galactic latitudes|b|>=25{deg}.

- We perform a census of the reddest, and potentially youngest, protostars in the Orion molecular clouds using data obtained with the PACS instrument on board the Herschel Space Observatory and the LABOCA and SABOCA instruments on APEX as part of the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS). A total of 55 new protostar candidates are detected at 70{mu}m and 160{mu}m that are either too faint (m_24_>7mag) to be reliably classified as protostars or undetected in the Spitzer/MIPS 24{mu}m band. We find that the 11 reddest protostar candidates with log{lambda}F_{lambda}_70/{lambda}F_{lambda}_24>1.65 are free of contamination and can thus be reliably explained as protostars. The remaining 44 sources have less extreme 70/24 colors, fainter 70{mu}m fluxes, and higher levels of contamination. Taking the previously known sample of Spitzer protostars and the new sample together, we find 18 sources that have log{lambda}F_{lambda}_70/{lambda}F_{lambda}_24>1.65; we name these sources "PACS Bright Red sources," or PBRs. Our analysis reveals that the PBR sample is composed of Class 0 like sources characterized by very red spectral energy distributions (SEDs; T_bol_<45K) and large values of sub-millimeter fluxes (L_smm_/L_bol_>0.6%). Modified blackbody fits to the SEDs provide lower limits to the envelope masses of 0.2-2M_{sun}_ and luminosities of 0.7-10L_{sun}_. Based on these properties, and a comparison of the SEDs with radiative transfer models of protostars, we conclude that the PBRs are most likely extreme Class 0 objects distinguished by higher than typical envelope densities and hence, high mass infall rates.

- IC 166 is an intermediate-age open cluster (OC) (~1 Gyr) that lies in the transition zone of the metallicity gradient in the outer disk. Its location, combined with our very limited knowledge of its salient features, make it an interesting object of study. We present the first high-resolution spectroscopic and precise kinematical analysis of IC 166, which lies in the outer disk with R_GC_~12.7 kpc. High-resolution H-band spectra were analyzed using observations from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. We made use of the Brussels Automatic Stellar Parameter code to provide chemical abundances based on a line-by-line approach for up to eight chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Al, K, Mn, and Fe). The {alpha}-element (Mg, Si, Ca, and whenever available Ti) abundances, and their trends with Fe abundances have been analyzed for a total of 13 high-likelihood cluster members. No significant abundance scatter was found in any of the chemical species studied. Combining the positional, heliocentric distance, and kinematic information, we derive, for the first time, the probable orbit of IC 166 within a Galactic model including a rotating boxy bar, and found that it is likely that IC 166 formed in the Galactic disk, supporting its nature as an unremarkable Galactic OC with an orbit bound to the Galactic plane.

- Multi-epoch radial velocity measurements of stars can be used to identify stellar, substellar, and planetary-mass companions. Even a small number of observation epochs can be informative about companions, though there can be multiple qualitatively different orbital solutions that fit the data. We have custom-built a Monte Carlo sampler (The Joker) that delivers reliable (and often highly multimodal) posterior samplings for companion orbital parameters given sparse radial velocity data. Here we use The Joker to perform a search for companions to 96231 red giant stars observed in the APOGEE survey (DR14) with >=3 spectroscopic epochs. We select stars with probable companions by making a cut on our posterior belief about the amplitude of the variation in stellar radial velocity induced by the orbit. We provide (1) a catalog of 320 companions for which the stellar companion's properties can be confidently determined, (2) a catalog of 4898 stars that likely have companions, but would require more observations to uniquely determine the orbital properties, and (3) posterior samplings for the full orbital parameters for all stars in the parent sample. We show the characteristics of systems with confidently determined companion properties and highlight interesting systems with candidate compact object companions.

- The Orion Star-forming Complex (OSFC) is a central target for the APOGEE-2 Young Cluster Survey. Existing membership catalogs span limited portions of the OSFC, reflecting the difficulty of selecting targets homogeneously across this extended, highly structured region. We have used data from wide-field photometric surveys to produce a less biased parent sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) with infrared (IR) excesses indicative of warm circumstellar material or photometric variability at optical wavelengths across the full 420deg^2^ extent of the OSFC. When restricted to YSO candidates with H<12.4, to ensure S/N~100 for a six-visit source, this uniformly selected sample includes 1307 IR excess sources selected using criteria vetted by Koenig & Leisawitz (2014ApJ...791..131K) and 990 optical variables identified in the Pan-STARRS1 3{pi} survey: 319 sources exhibit both optical variability and evidence of circumstellar disks through IR excess. Objects from this uniformly selected sample received the highest priority for targeting, but required fewer than half of the fibers on each APOGEE-2 plate. We filled the remaining fibers with previously confirmed and new color-magnitude selected candidate OSFC members. Radial velocity measurements from APOGEE-1 and new APOGEE-2 observations taken in the survey's first year indicate that ~90% of the uniformly selected targets have radial velocities consistent with Orion membership. The APOGEE-2 Orion survey will include >1100 bona fide YSOs whose uniform selection function will provide a robust sample for comparative analyses of the stellar populations and properties across all sub-regions of Orion.

- The Apache Point Survey of Transit Lightcurves of Exoplanets (APOSTLE) observed 11 transits of TrES-3b over two years in order to constrain system parameters and look for transit timing and depth variations. We describe an updated analysis protocol for APOSTLE data, including the reduction pipeline, transit model, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyzer. Our estimates of the system parameters for TrES-3b are consistent with previous estimates to within the 2{sigma} confidence level. We improved the errors (by 10%-30%) on system parameters such as the orbital inclination (i_orb_), impact parameter (b), and stellar density ({rho}_{sstarf}_) compared to previous measurements. The near-grazing nature of the system, and incomplete sampling of some transits, limited our ability to place reliable uncertainties on individual transit depths and hence we do not report strong evidence for variability. Our analysis of the transit timing data shows no evidence for transit timing variations and our timing measurements are able to rule out super-Earth and gas giant companions in low-order mean motion resonance with TrES-3b.

- The Apache Point Survey of Transit Lightcurves of Exoplanets (APOSTLE) observed 10 transits of XO-2b over a period of 3yr. We present measurements that confirm previous estimates of system parameters like the normalized semi-major axis (a/R_*_), stellar density ({rho}_*_), impact parameter (b), and orbital inclination (i_orb_). Our errors on system parameters like a/R_*_ and {rho}_*_ have improved by ~40% compared to previous best ground-based measurements. Our study of the transit times show no evidence for transit timing variations (TTVs) and we are able to rule out co-planar companions with masses >=0.20M_{Earth}_ in low order mean motion resonance with XO-2b. We also explored the stability of the XO-2 system given various orbital configurations of a hypothetical planet near the 2:1 mean motion resonance. We find that a wide range of orbits (including Earth-mass perturbers) are both dynamically stable and produce observable TTVs. We find that up to 51% of our stable simulations show TTVs that are smaller than the typical transit timing errors (~20s) measured for XO-2b, and hence remain undetectable.

- Continuing our census of late-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, we present BVRI photometry and optical spectroscopy of 800 mid-type M dwarfs drawn from the NLTT proper-motion catalog. The targets are taken both from our own cross-referencing of the NLTT Catalogue and the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release, and from the revised NLTT compiled recently by Salim & Gould (Cat. <J/ApJ/582/1011>). All are identified as nearby-star candidates based on their location in the (m_r_, m_r_-K_s_) diagram. Three hundred stars discussed here have previous astrometric, photometric, or spectroscopic observations. We present new BVRI photometry for 101 stars, together with low-resolution spectroscopy of a further 400 dwarfs.

- We examined light curves of 1138 stars brighter than 18.0mag in the I band and less than a mean magnitude error of 0.1mag in the V band from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)-III eclipsing binary catalogue, and found 90 new binary systems exhibiting apsidal motion. In this study, the samples of apsidal motion stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) were increased by a factor of about 3.0 than previously known. In order to determine the period of the apsidal motion for the binaries, we analysed in detail both the light curves and eclipse timings using the MACHO (MAssive Compact Halo Objects) and OGLE photometric data base. For the eclipse timing diagrams of the systems, new times of minimum light were derived from the full light curve combined at intervals of one year from the survey data. The new 90 binaries have apsidal motion periods in the range of 12-897yr. An additional short-term oscillation was detected in four systems (OGLE-SMC-ECL-1634, 1947, 3035, and 4946), which most likely arises from the existence of a third body orbiting each eclipsing binary. Since the systems presented here are based on homogeneous data and have been analysed in the same way, they are suitable for further statistical analysis.

- We obtained the first VRI CCD light curves of the short-period contact eclipsing binary AQ Boo, which was observed on March 22 and April 19 in 2014 at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories, and on January 20, 21 and February 28 in 2015 at Kunming station of Yunnan Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. Using our six newly obtained minima and the minima that other authors obtained previously, we revised the ephemeris of AQ Boo. By fitting the O-C (observed minus calculated) values of the minima, the orbital period of AQ Boo shows a decreasing tendency dP/dt=-1.47(0.17)x10^-17^day/year. We interpret the phenomenon by mass transfer from the secondary (more massive) component to the primary (less massive) one. By using the updated Wilson & Devinney (1971ApJ...166..605W) program, we also derived the photometric orbital parameters of AQ Boo for the first time. We conclude that AQ Boo is a near contact binary with a low contact factor of 14.43%, and will become an over-contact system as the mass transfer continues.

- For the first time, we have detected Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 7793. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands on 56 nights in 2003-2005, we have discovered 17 long-period (24-62 days) Cepheids whose periods and mean magnitudes define tight period-luminosity relations. We use the (V-I) Wesenheit index to determine a reddening-free true distance modulus to NGC 7793 of 27.68+/-0.05mag (internal error) +/-0.08mag (systematic error).

- We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands during 77 nights in 2002-2003, we have found 143 Cepheids with periods ranging from 5.6 to 175.9 days; 133 of these objects have periods longer than 10 days, making NGC 55 to date the galaxy with the largest known number of long-period Cepheids in the Sculptor Group.

- We have conducted an extensive wide-field imaging survey for Cepheid variables in the Local Group irregular galaxy WLM. From data obtained on 101 nights, we have discovered 60 Cepheids, which include 14 of the 15 Cepheid variables previously detected by Sandage and Carlson. Our Cepheid survey in WLM should be practically complete down to a period of 3-days. Importantly, we have found for the first time a long-period Cepheid (P=54.2-days) in this galaxy, alleviating the problem that WLM with its many blue, massive stars does not contain Cepheids with periods longer than about 10-days.

- The Galactic Center is the most active site of star formation in the Milky Way Galaxy, where particularly high-mass stars have formed very recently and are still forming today. However, since we are looking at the Galactic Center through the Galactic disk, knowledge of extinction is crucial to study this region. The Arches cluster is a young, massive starburst cluster near the Galactic Center. We observed the Arches cluster out to its tidal radius using Ks-band imaging obtained with NAOS/CONICA at the VLT combined with Subaro/Cisco J-band data to gain a full understanding of the cluster mass distribution. We show that the determination of the mass of the most massive star in the Arches cluster, which had been used in previous studies to establish an upper-mass limit for the star formation process in the Milky Way, strongly depends on the assumed slope of the extinction law. Assuming the two regimes of widely used infrared extinction laws, we show that the difference can reach up to 30% for individually derived stellar masses and {Delta}AKs~1 magnitude in acquired Ks-band extinction, while the present mass function slope changes by ~0.17dex. The present-day mass function slope derived assuming the Nishiyama et al. (2009) extinction law increases from a flat slope of {alpha}-Nishi=-1.50+/-0.35 in the core (r<0.2pc) to {alpha}-Nishi=-2.21+/-0.27 in the intermediate annulus (0.2<r<0.4pc), where the Salpeter slope is -2.3. The present-day mass function steepens to {alpha}-Nishi=-3.21+/-0.30 in the outer annulus (0.4<r<1.5pc), indicating that the outer cluster region is depleted of high mass stars. This picture is consistent with mass segregation due to the dynamical evolution of the cluster.

- We present the results of a near-infrared (NIR) monitoring program carried out between 1999 and 2005 to determine the variability properties of the `Arecibo sample of OH/IR stars'. The sample consists of 385 IRAS-selected Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) candidates, for which their O-rich chemistry has been proven by the detection of 1612 MHz OH maser emission. The monitoring data was complemented by data collected from public optical and NIR surveys. We fitted the light curves obtained in the optical and NIR bands with a model using an asymmetric cosine function, and derived a period for 345 sources ~90% of the sample). Based on their variability properties, most of the Arecibo sources are classified as long-period large-amplitude variable stars (LPLAV), 4% as (candidate) post-AGB stars, and 3% remain unclassified although they are likely post-AGB stars or highly obscured AGB stars. The period distribution of the LPLAVs peaks at ~400d, with periods between 300 and 800d for most of the sources, and has a long tail up to ~2100d. Typically, the amplitudes are between 1 and 3 mag in the NIR and between 2 and 6 mag in the optical. We find correlations between periods and amplitudes, with larger amplitudes associated to longer periods, as well as between the period and the infrared colours, with the longer periods linked to the redder sources. Among the post-AGB stars, the light curve of IRAS 19566+3423 was exceptional, showing a large systematic increase (>0.4mag/yr) in K-band brightness over 7 years.

- Using infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we perform the first inventory of aromatic feature emission (also commonly referred to as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission) for a statistically complete sample of star-forming galaxies in the local volume. The photometric methodology involved is calibrated and demonstrated to recover the aromatic fraction of the Infrared Array Camera 8um flux with a standard deviation of 6% for a training set of 40 SINGS galaxies (ranging from stellar to dust dominated; Kennicutt et al. 2003PASP..115..928K) with both suitable mid-infrared Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectra and equivalent photometry. A potential factor of 2 improvement could be realized with suitable 5.5um and 10um photometry, such as what may be provided in the future by the James Webb Space Telescope. The resulting technique is then applied to mid-infrared photometry for the 258 galaxies from the Local Volume Legacy (LVL; Dale et al. 2009, Cat. J/ApJ/703/517) survey, a large sample dominated in number by low-luminosity dwarf galaxies for which obtaining comparable mid-infrared spectroscopy is not feasible. Using oxygen abundances compiled from the literature for 129 of the 258 LVL galaxies, we find a correlation between metallicity and the aromatic-to-total infrared emission ratio but not the aromatic-to-total 8um dust emission ratio. A possible explanation is that metallicity plays a role in the abundance of aromatic molecules relative to the total dust content, but other factors, such as star formation and/or the local radiation field, affect the excitation of those molecules.

- The planet-metallicity correlation serves as a potential link between exoplanet systems as we observe them today and the effects of bulk composition on the planet formation process. Many observers have noted a tendency for Jovian planets to form around stars with higher metallicities; however, there is no consensus on a trend for smaller planets. Here, we investigate the planet-metallicity correlation for rocky planets in single and multi-planet systems around Kepler M-dwarf and late-K-dwarf stars. Due to molecular blanketing and the dim nature of these low-mass stars, it is difficult to make direct elemental abundance measurements via spectroscopy. We instead use a combination of accurate and uniformly measured parallaxes and photometry to obtain relative metallicities and validate this method with a subsample of spectroscopically determined metallicities. We use the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Anderson-Darling (AD) test to compare the compact multiple planetary systems with single-transiting planet systems and systems with no detected transiting planets. We find that the compact multiple planetary systems are derived from a statistically more metal-poor population, with a p-value of 0.015 in the K-S test, a p-value of 0.005 in the Mann-Whitney U-test, and a value of 2.574 in the AD test statistic, which exceeds the derived threshold for significance by a factor of 25. We conclude that metallicity plays a significant role in determining the architecture of rocky planet systems. Compact multiples either form more readily, or are more likely to survive on gigayear timescales, around metal-poor stars.

- We have started a spectroscopic survey to identify new chromospherically active components and low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in recently discovered All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) eclipsing binaries. In this paper, we briefly describe our scientific motivation, the observing tools and the results obtained from the first phase of this survey. Using the available observing facilities in India, the spectroscopic observations of a sample of 180 candidate eclipsing binary stars selected from ASAS-I&II releases were carried out during 2004-2006. The strength of Halpha emission was used to characterize the level of chromospheric activity. Our spectroscopic survey reveals that out of 180 stars about 36 binary systems show excess Halpha emission. One of the objects in our sample, ASAS 081700-4243.8, displays very strong Halpha emission. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopic observations reveal that this object is indeed very interesting and most likely a classical Be-type system with K0III companion.

- We present basic statistics for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during its first year-and-a-half of operations, spanning 2013 and 2014. We also present the same information for all other bright (m_V_<=17), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered from 2014 May 1 through the end of 2014, providing a comparison to the ASAS-SN sample starting from the point where ASAS-SN became operational in both hemispheres. In addition, we present collected redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes, where available, for all host galaxies of the bright supernovae in both samples. This work represents a comprehensive catalogue of bright supernovae and their hosts from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were not previously possible because the all-sky emphasis of ASAS-SN redresses many previously existing biases. In particular, ASAS-SN systematically finds bright supernovae closer to the centres of host galaxies than either other professional surveys or amateurs, a remarkable result given ASAS-SN's poorer angular resolution. This is the first of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts that will be released by the ASAS-SN team.

- The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) is the first optical survey to routinely monitor the whole sky with a cadence of ~2-3d down to V<~17mag. ASAS-SN has monitored the whole sky since 2014, collecting ~100-500 epochs of observations per field. The V-band light curves for candidate variables identified during the search for supernovae are classified using a random forest classifier and visually verified. In Paper I (Jayasinghe+ 2018MNRAS.477.3145J), we present a catalogue of 66179 bright, new variable stars discovered during our search for supernovae, including 27479 periodic variables and 38700 irregular variables. In paper II (Jayasinghe+ 2019MNRAS.486.1907J), We extracted the ASAS-SN light curves of ~412000 variable stars previously discovered by other surveys and in the VSX catalogue. In paper III (Jayasinghe+ 2019MNRAS.485..961J), we extracted the ASAS-SN light curves of ~1.3 million sources within 18deg of the Southern Ecliptic Pole. These sources are within the southern TESS CVZ and will have well-sampled TESS light curves.

- We present ground-based and Swift photometric and spectroscopic observations of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-15oi, discovered at the centre of 2MASX J20390918-3045201 (d~=216Mpc) by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae. The source peaked at a bolometric luminosity of L~=1.3x10^44^erg/s and radiated a total energy of E~=6.6x10^50^ erg over the first ~3.5 months of observations. The early optical/UV emission of the source can be fit by a blackbody with temperature increasing from T~=2x10^4^K to T~=4x10^4^K while the luminosity declines from L~=1.3x10^44^erg/s to L~=2.3x10^43^erg/s, requiring the photosphere to be shrinking rapidly. The optical/UV luminosity decline during this period is most consistent with an exponential decline, L{prop.to}e^-(t-t_0)/tau_^, with {tau}~=46.5d for t_0_~=57241.6 (MJD), while a power-law decline of L{prop.to}(t-t_0_)^-{alpha}^ with t_0_~=57212.3 and {alpha}=1.62 provides a moderately worse fit. ASASSN-15oi also exhibits roughly constant soft X-ray emission that is significantly weaker than the optical/UV emission. Spectra of the source show broad helium emission lines and strong blue continuum emission in early epochs, although these features fade rapidly and are not present ~3 months after discovery. The early spectroscopic features and colour evolution of ASASSN-15oi are consistent with a TDE, but the rapid spectral evolution is unique among optically selected TDEs.

- We present the results of optical spectroscopic identifications of a bright subsample of 2-10keV hard X-ray-selected sources from the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey in the northern sky (AMSSn). The flux limit of the subsample is 3x10^-13^erg/s/cm^2^ in the 2-10keV band. All but one of the 87 hard X-ray-selected sources are optically identified, with AGNs (including broad-line AGNs, narrow-line AGNs, and three BL Lac objects), seven clusters of galaxies, and one galactic star. It is the largest complete sample of hard X-ray-selected AGNs at the bright flux limit. Amounts of absorption to their nuclei are estimated to be hydrogen column densities (NH) of up to 3x10^23^cm^-2^ from their X-ray spectra. Optical properties of X-ray absorbed AGNs with N_H_>1x10^22^cm^-2^ indicate the effects of dust absorption: at redshifts z<0.6, AGNs without broad H{beta} emission lines have significantly larger NH-values than AGNs with broad H{beta} emission lines. At z>0.6, the X-ray absorbed AGNs have a large hard X-ray to optical flux ratio (logf_2-10keV_/f_R_>+1). However, three X-ray absorbed z>0.6 AGNs show strong broad lines. In combination with hard X-ray-selected AGN samples from the ASCA Large Sky Survey, the ASCA Deep Survey in the Lockman Hole, and Chandra Deep Field North, the luminosity distributions of absorbed (N_H_>1x10^22^cm^-2^) and less-absorbed (N_H_<1x10^22^cm^-2^) AGNs are compared.

- The first high-precision BVRI light curves of the eclipsing binary AS CrB were presented and were analyzed by the 2015 version of the W-D code. It is found that AS CrB is an extreme mass-ratio, deep contact binary with a fill-out factor of f=59.6+/-2.5% and a mass ratio of q=0.172+/-0.008q=0.172+/-0.008. Based on the photometric solution and the Dartmouth isochrones model, the masses, radii, and luminosities of the components are estimated as follows: M_1_=1.25+/-0.15M_{sun}_, M_1_=1.25+/-0.15M_{sun}_, M_2_=0.21+/-0.06M_{sun}_, M_2_=0.21+/-0.06M_{sun}_, R_1_=1.40+/-0.07R_{sun}_, R_1_=1.40+/-0.07R_{sun}_, R_2_=0.67+/-0.04R_{sun}_, R_2_=0.67+/-0.04R_{sun}_, L_1_=3.2+/-0.2L_{sun}_, L_1_=3.2+/-0.2L_{sun}_, and L_2_=0.72+/-0.04L_{sun}_, L_2_=0.72+/-0.04L_{sun}_, with an estimated distance 459+/-42pc. These uncertainties mainly come from the errors of the color used to estimate the temperature of the primary star. By investigating all of the available times of light minima, it is found that the Observed-Calculated [(O-C)(O-C)] curve shows a long-term period increase, with a rate of dP/dt=+(3.46+/-0.01)x10^-7^dP/dt=+(3.46+/-0.01)x10^-7^day/year. As an extreme mass-ratio contact binary, AS CrB may merge into a single star, such as an FK Com-type star or a blue straggler, because of the orbital instability.

- We present star formation activity in the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G53.2, a remarkable IRDC located at Galactic coordinates (l,b)~(53.2{deg},0.0{deg}) based on the census of young stellar object (YSO) candidates. IRDC G53.2 was previously identified as several IRDCs in mid-IR images, but it is in fact a long (>~45pc) cloud, well consistent with a CO cloud at v~23km/s (or at d~1.7kpc). We present a point-source catalog of IRDC G53.2 that contains ~370 sources from our photometry of the Spitzer MIPS 24{mu}m data and Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) Catalog. The classification of the identified sources based on their spectral index and control field analysis to remove field star contamination reveals that IRDC G53.2 is an active star-forming region with ~300 YSO candidates. We compare the YSO classification based on spectral index, mid-IR colors, and the wavelength range used, which results in consistent classification, except for flat-spectrum objects, with some ambiguity between Class I and II. Comparison of the YSO population in IRDC G53.2 with those of other nearby star-forming clusters indicates that they are similar in age; on the other hand, stronger association with mid-IR stellar sources in IRDC G53.2 compared with other IRDCs indicates that IRDC G53.2 is at a later evolutionary stage among IRDCs. Spatial distribution of the YSO candidates in IRDC G53.2 shows a good correlation with ^13^CO column density and far-IR emission, and earlier-class objects tend to be more clustered in the regions with higher density.

- We have performed mid-IR photometry of the young open cluster NGC 2264 using the images obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer instruments and presented a normalized classification scheme of young stellar objects in various color-color diagrams to make full use of the information from multicolor photometry. These results are compared with the classification scheme based on the slope of the spectral energy distribution (SED). From the spatial distributions of Class I and II stars, we have identified two subclusterings of Class I objects in the CONE region of Sung et al. (Cat. J/AJ/135/441). The disked stars in the other star-forming region S Mon are mostly Class II objects. In addition, we have derived a somewhat higher value of the primordial disk fraction for NGC 2264 members located below the main pre-main-sequence locus (so-called BMS stars). This result supports the idea that BMS stars are young stars with nearly edge-on disks.

- A standard library of theoretical stellar spectra intended for multiple synthetic photometry applications including spectral evolutionary synthesis is presented. The grid includes M dwarf model spectra, hence complementing the first library version established in Paper I (Lejeune et al., 1997, Cat. <J/A+AS/125/229>). It covers the following wide ranges of fundamental parameters: Teff: 50,000 to 2000K, logg: 5.5 to -1.02, and [Fe/H]: +1.0 to -5.0. A correction procedure is also applied to the theoretical spectra in order to provide color-calibrated flux distributions over a large domain of effective temperatures. Empirical Teff-color calibrations are constructed between 11500K and 2000K, and semi-empirical calibrations for non-solar abundances ([Fe/H]=-3.5 to +1.0) are established. Model colors and bolometric corrections for both the original and the corrected spectra, synthesized in the UBV(RI)c(JHKLL'M) system, are given for the full range of stellar parameters. Synthetic colors: ---------------- Synthetic UBV(RI)c(JHKLM) colors have been computed from both the original and the corrected model flux distributions presented in Paper I (1997A&AS..125..229L; see catalog <J/A+AS/125/229>), as the files lcb98ori.dat and lcb98cor.dat respectively; the results are also presented in individual files lcb98xxx.ori and lcb98xxx.cor, where xxx designates the metallicity (ex: 'm15' --> [Fe/H]=-1.5). For each file, we give synthetic colors computed from energy-weighted and photon-weighted stellar fluxes. Semi-empirical calibrations: --------------------------- Empirical ([Fe/H]=0.0) and semi-empirical (-3.5<=[Fe/H]<=+1.0) Teff-colors (UBVRIJHKLM) calibrations are given in Tables 1 to 10.

The resulting online catalogs give the identification, the classification, the period, and the depth or semi-amplitude of each star. - Large photometric surveys are producing, and will continue doing it, massive amounts of data on small bodies. Usually,these data will be sparsely obtained at arbitrary (and unknown) rotational phases. Therefore, new methods to process such data need to be developed to make the most of those large catalogs. We aim to produce a method to create phase curves of small bodies considering the uncertainties introduced not only by the nominal errors in the magnitudes, but also the effect introduced by rotational variations.We use as a benchmark the data from the SLOAN Moving Objects Catalog with the objective to construct phase curves of all small bodies in there, in the u, g, r, i, and z, filters. We will obtain from the phase curves the absolute magnitudes and set up with them the absolute colors, which are the colors of the asteroids not affected by changes in phase angle. We select objects with >3 observations taken in, at least, one filter and spanned over a minimum of 5 degrees in phase angle. We developed a method that combines Monte Carlo simulations and Bayesian inference to estimate the absolute magnitudes using the HG12 photometric system. We obtained almost 15000 phase curves, about 12000 including all five filters. The absolute magnitudes and absolute colors are compatible with previously published data, supporting our method.Conclusions. The method we developed is fully automatic and well suited to be run on large amounts of data. Moreover, it includes the nominal uncertainties in the magnitudes and the whole distribution of possible rotational states of the objects producing, possibly,less precise values, i.e., larger uncertainties, but more accurate, i.e., closer to the real value. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to include the effect of rotational variations in such a way.
