- We present multiband Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images of the central regions of ESO 565-11, a peculiar southern barred galaxy recently shown to have the largest known example of a circumnuclear starburst ring. We also present ground-based near-infrared H-band imaging and photometry of the galaxy. The results provide an interesting picture of the star-forming ring and its environment.

- The excess number of blue galaxies at faint magnitudes is a subject of much controversy. Recent Hubble Space Telescope results have revealed a plethora of galaxies with peculiar morphologies tentatively identified as the evolving population. We report the results of optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of a sample of faint HST galaxies from the Medium Deep Survey to ascertain the physical properties of the faint morphological populations. We find four principal results. First, the population of objects classified as 'peculiar' are intrinsically luminous in the optical (M_B_~-19). Secondly these systems tend to be strong sources of [OII] line luminosity. Thirdly the optical-infrared colours of the faint population (a) confirm the presence of a population of compact blue galaxies and (b) show the stellar populations of irregular/peculiar galaxies encompass a wide range in age. Finally a surface-brightness comparison with the local galaxy sample of Freiz et al. (1996AJ....111..174F) shows that these objects are not of anomalously low surface brightness, rather we find that all morphological classes have evolved to a higher surface brightness at higher redshifts (z>0.3).

- K dwarfs have lifetimes older than the present age of the Galactic disc, and are thus ideal stars for investigating the chemical evolution of the disc. We have developed several photometric metallicity indicators for K dwarfs, based on a sample of accurate spectroscopic metallicities for 34 disc and halo G and K dwarfs. The photometric metallicities lead us to develop a metallicity index for K dwarfs based only on their position in the colour-absolute-magnitude diagram. Metallicities have been determined for 431 single K dwarfs drawn from the Hipparcos catalogue, selecting the stars by absolute magnitude and removing multiple systems. The sample is essentially a complete reckoning of the metal content in nearby K dwarfs. We use stellar isochrones to mark the stars by mass, and select a subset of 220 of the stars, which is complete within a narrow mass interval. We fit the data with a model of the chemical evolution of the solar cylinder. We find that only a modest cosmic scatter is required to fit our age-metallicity relation. The model assumes two main infall episodes for the formation of the halo-thick disc and thin disc, respectively. The new data confirm that the solar neighbourhood formed on a long time-scale of the order of 7Gyr.

- An H{alpha} emission survey of the young cluster NGC 2362 resulted in the detection of 130 H{alpha} emission stars in an 11'x11' field approximately centered on the fourth magnitude O9 Ib multiple star {tau} CMa. The survey was carried out using the wide-field grism spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North. Deep optical VR_C_I_C_ (to V~23.0) and near-infrared (NIR) photometry (JHK) to K~16 were obtained for several fields within the cluster. Spectra covering the 6000-8000{AA} region at a resolution of R~3000 (adequate for the determination of LiI{lambda}6708 line strengths) were also acquired for ~200 pre-main-sequence (PMS) candidates with GMOS.

- An H{alpha} emission survey of the young cluster NGC 2264 in the Mon OB1 association resulted in the detection of 490 H{alpha} emission stars in a 25'x40' field approximately centered between the O7 V multiple star S Mon and the Cone Nebula. The survey was carried out with the wide-field grism spectrograph (WFGS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope on Mauna Kea. X-ray observations made with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton satellite observatory will be discussed in a subsequent paper. Optical (BVR_C_I_C_) photometry was obtained for selected fields to supplement similar data from the literature. Spectra covering the 6000-8000{AA} region at a resolution of R~3000 (adequate for the determination of Li I {lambda}6708 line strengths) were obtained for 150 H{alpha} and X-ray emission sources with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS).

- The Hungarian-made Automated Telescope Network (HATnet) is an ongoing project to detect transiting extrasolar planets using small-aperture (11cm diameter) robotic telescopes. In this paper, we present the results from using image subtraction photometry to reduce a crowded stellar field observed with one of the HATnet telescopes (HAT-5). This field was chosen to overlap with the planned Kepler mission. We obtained I-band light curves for 98,000 objects in a 67 square degree field of view centered at J2000 ({alpha},{delta})=(19h44m00.0s, +37{deg}32'00.0"), near the Galactic plane in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra. These observations include 788 exposures of 5' length over 30-days. For the brightest stars (I~8.0) we achieved a precision of 3.5mmag, falling to 0.1mag at the faint end (I~14). From these light curves we identify 1617 variable stars, of which 1439 are newly discovered.

- We present the preliminary results of our astrometric study of stellar motions along the lines of sight of the Magellanic Clouds and the Galactic bulge. Using 5 years of MACHO project point-spread function photometry, we find that we can easily select stars with proper motions of 0.03"/yr from these very dense fields, using the characteristic shapes of their light curves. By performing astrometry on photometrically selected, candidate, high proper motion (HPM) stars in 50 deg^2^, we have discovered 154 new HPM stars from ~55 million stars monitored by the MACHO project. These new objects have proper motions as high as 0.5"/yr, brightnesses ranging from V ~13 to V~19, and V-R colors between 0.3 and 1.45.

- For Hipparcos M, S, and C spectral type stars, we provide calibrated instantaneous (epoch) Cousins V-I color indices using newly derived HpV_T2_ photometry. Three new sets of ground-based Cousins VI data have been obtained for more than 170 carbon and red M giants, observed at SAAO in 1984 and 1987 (table1), at Siding Spring Observatory in 2002 (table2), and with the Automatic Photoelectric Telescopes located at Fairborn Observatory from 1996 (table3). These datasets in combination with the published sources of VI photometry served to obtain the calibration curves linking Hipparcos/Tycho Hp-V_T2_ with the Cousins V-I index. In total, 321 carbon stars and 4464 M- and S-type stars have new V-I indices. The standard error of the mean V-I is about 0.1mag or better down to Hp~9 although it deteriorates rapidly at fainter magnitudes. These V-I indices can be used to verify the published Hipparcos V-I color indices. Thus, we have identified a handful of new cases where, instead of the real target, a random field star has been observed. A considerable fraction of the DMSA/C and DMSA/V solutions for red stars appear not to be warranted. Most likely such spurious solutions may originate from usage of a heavily biased color in the astrometric processing.

- In this paper, we present the discovery of 114 compact star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy M81 from B-, V-, and I-band Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 imaging in eight fields, covering a total area of ~40arcmin^2^. The fields sample a variety of environments (both spiral and interarm regions), as well as a range of projected galactocentric distances from 2 to 12kpc. The sample is complete to V~22, deeper by ~1mag than any previous cluster survey in M81. We present details of the separation of clusters from both stellar sources and background galaxies, which has been based solely on structural parameters and morphology and not using any color cuts, as is necessary for ground-based surveys. We present magnitudes and colors of detected clusters. Surface brightness profiles are compared with single-mass King models, giving a range of core radii for the clusters in our sample between 0.2 and 7pc.
