- We turn our attention to Haffner 9, a Milky Way open cluster whose previous fundamental parameter estimates are far from being in agreement. In order to provide with accurate estimates, we present high-quality Washington CT_1_ and Johnson BVI photometry of the cluster field. We put particular care in statistically cleaning the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) from field star contamination, which was found a common source in previous works for the discordant fundamental parameter estimates. The resulting cluster CMD fiducial features were confirmed from a proper motion membership analysis. Haffner 9 is a moderately young object (age~350Myr), placed in the Perseus arm - at a heliocentric distance of ~3.2kpc - , with a lower limit for its present mass of ~160M_{sun}_ and of nearly metal solar content. The combination of the cluster structural and fundamental parameters suggest that it is in an advanced stage of internal dynamical evolution, possibly in the phase typical of those with mass segregation in their core regions. However, the cluster still keeps its mass function close to that of the Salpeter's law.

- We present broad-band UBV(RI)_c_ CCD imagery of 334 stars in the direction of the Galactic cluster Haffner 19. The sample is complete to m{lambda}=19 ({lambda} = U, B, V, R, I). We reliably establish the cluster membership for 102 stars based upon their locations in the (V, B-V), (V, V-I), (I, R-I), (U-B, B-V), and (V-R, V-I) diagrams, thus increasing three-fold the number of known cluster members. With the Q-method we determine the MK spectral types of the 33 brightest stars, confirming that 29 belong to the cluster's young population (15 B0-B1 and 14 B2- B9 main sequence stars). Complementary uvby{beta} photoelectric photometry of 6 bright stars independently confirms the distance and reddening to the cluster.

- We report the discovery of accretion disks associated with ~13Myr old intermediate/low-mass stars in h and {chi} Persei. Optical spectroscopy of ~5000 stars in these clusters and a surrounding halo population reveal 32 A-K stars with Halpha emission. Matching these stars with 2MASS and optical photometry yields 25 stars with the highest probability of cluster membership and EW(Halpha)>=5{AA}. Sixteen of these sources have EW(Halpha)>=10{AA}.

- An H{alpha} emission survey of the young cluster NGC 2362 resulted in the detection of 130 H{alpha} emission stars in an 11'x11' field approximately centered on the fourth magnitude O9 Ib multiple star {tau} CMa. The survey was carried out using the wide-field grism spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope and the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North. Deep optical VR_C_I_C_ (to V~23.0) and near-infrared (NIR) photometry (JHK) to K~16 were obtained for several fields within the cluster. Spectra covering the 6000-8000{AA} region at a resolution of R~3000 (adequate for the determination of LiI{lambda}6708 line strengths) were also acquired for ~200 pre-main-sequence (PMS) candidates with GMOS.

- An H{alpha} emission survey of the young cluster NGC 2264 in the Mon OB1 association resulted in the detection of 490 H{alpha} emission stars in a 25'x40' field approximately centered between the O7 V multiple star S Mon and the Cone Nebula. The survey was carried out with the wide-field grism spectrograph (WFGS) on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope on Mauna Kea. X-ray observations made with the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton satellite observatory will be discussed in a subsequent paper. Optical (BVR_C_I_C_) photometry was obtained for selected fields to supplement similar data from the literature. Spectra covering the 6000-8000{AA} region at a resolution of R~3000 (adequate for the determination of Li I {lambda}6708 line strengths) were obtained for 150 H{alpha} and X-ray emission sources with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS).

- UBVI and H{alpha} photometry is presented for 17319 stars in vicinity of the young double cluster h and {chi} Persei. Our photometry extends over a 37'x1{deg} field centered on the association. We construct reddening contours within the imaged field. We find that the two clusters share a common distance modulus of 11.75+/-0.05 and ages of log[age(yr)]=7.1+/-0.1. From the V-H{alpha} color, a measure of the H{alpha} emission strength, we conduct a survey for emission line objects within the association. We detect a sample of 33 Be stars, eight of which are new detections. We present a scenario of evolutionary enhancement of the Be phenomenon to account for the peak in Be fraction toward the top of the main sequence in the population of h and {chi} Persei and similar young clusters. UBVI and H{alpha} photometry was performed on five nights between 1999 August 17 and 25 at the San Diego State University Mount Laguna Observatory with the 1m telescope and a Loral 2048x2048 CCD.

- We present adaptive optics (AO) near-infrared observations of the core of the Tr 14 cluster in the Carina region obtained with the ESO multi-conjugate AO demonstrator, MAD. Our campaign yields AO-corrected observations with an image quality of about 0.2' across the 2" field of view, which is the widest AO mosaic ever obtained. We detected almost 2000 sources spanning a dynamic range of 10 mag. The pre-main sequence (PMS) locus in the colour-magnitude diagram is well reproduced by Palla & Stahler isochrones with an age of 3 to 5x10^5^yr, confirming the very young age of the cluster. We derive a very high (deprojected) central density n_0_~4.5(+/-0.5)x10^4^pc^-3^ and estimate the total mass of the cluster to be about ~4.3^+3.3^_-1.5_x10^3^M_{sun}_, although contamination of the field of view might have a significant impact on the derived mass. We show that the pairing process is largely dominated by chance alignment so that physical pairs are difficult to disentangle from spurious ones based on our single epoch observation. Yet, we identify 150 likely bound pairs, 30% of these with a separation smaller than 0.5" (~1300AU). We further show that at the 2{sigma} level massive stars have more companions than lower-mass stars and that those companions are respectively brighter on average, thus more massive. Finally, we find some hints of mass segregation for stars heavier than about 10M_{sun}_. If confirmed, the observed degree of mass segregation could be explained by dynamical evolution, despite the young age of the cluster.

- Using data from the Hungarian-made Automated Telescope Network (HATNet) survey for transiting exoplanets, we measure photometric rotation periods for 368 Pleiades stars with 0.4~<M~<1.3M_{sun}_. We detect periodic variability for 74 per cent of the cluster members in this mass range that are within our field-of-view, and 93 per cent of the members with 0.7~<M~<1.0M_{sun}_. This increases, by a factor of 5, the number of Pleiades members with measured periods. We compare these data to the rich sample of spectroscopically determined projected equatorial rotation velocities (vsini) available in the literature for this cluster. Included in our sample are 14 newly identified probable cluster members which have proper motions, photometry and rotation periods consistent with membership.

- A deep CCD UBVRI photometric survey combined with UBVRI polarimetric observations of 21 bright stars was carried out in the region of the open cluster Havlen-Moffat No. 1. Our data reveal that the extinction law in this cluster es variable and that six cluster stars show very high polarisation values (>4%), probably because of the presence of a nearby small dust cloud. The cluster is at a distance of d=3300pc, it is 2-4Myr old and the initial mass function of its most massive stars (M>3M_{sun}_) has a flat slope of x about of 0.7. As an additional result, it was possible to reconcile the absolute magnitudes of the two WN7-type members using the R-values valid in the regions where they are located.
