- Magnetic field measurements of Ap/Bp stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/873/L5
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:

- Description:
- We report on magnetic field measurements of 157 chemically peculiar A/B stars (Ap/Bp) based on resolved, magnetically split absorption lines present in H-band spectra provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. These stars represent the extreme magnetic end of a still-growing sample of >900 Ap/Bp stars selected among the APOGEE telluric standard stars as those with CeIII absorption lines and/or literature Ap/Bp classifications. The lines most frequently resolved into their split components for these stars in the H-band pertain primarily pertain to CeIII, CrII, FeI, MnII, SiI, and CaII, in addition to one or more unidentified ions. Using mean magnetic field modulus (<B>) estimates for transitions with known Lande factors, we estimate effective Lande factors for 5 CeIII lines and 15 unknown lines and proceed to measure <B> of 157 stars, only 3 of which have previous literature estimates of <B>. This 183% increase in the number of Ap/Bp stars for which <B> has been measured is a result of the large number of stars observed by SDSS/APOGEE, extension of high-resolution Ap/Bp star observations to fainter magnitudes, and the advantages of long wavelengths for resolving magnetically split lines. With <B>~25kG, the star 2MASS J02563098+4534239 is currently the most magnetic star of the SDSS/APOGEE sample. Effective Lande factors, representative line profiles, and magnetic field moduli are presented. The validity of the results is supported using optical, high-resolution, follow-up spectra for 29 of the stars.

- Magnetic flaring from PMS stars spectra

- Description:
- Flares from the Sun and other stars are most prominently observed in the soft X-ray band. Most of the radiated energy, however, is released at optical/UV wavelengths. In spite of decades of investigation, the physics of flares is not fully understood. Even less is known about the powerful flares routinely observed from pre-main sequence stars, which might significantly influence the evolution of circumstellar disks. Observations of the NGC2264 star forming region were obtained in Dec. 2011, simultaneously with three telescopes, Chandra (X-rays), CoRoT (optical), and Spitzer (mIR), as part of the "Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC2264" (CSI-NGC2264). Shorter Chandra and CoRoT observations were also obtained in March 2008. We analyzed the lightcurves to detect X-ray flares with an optical and/or mIR counterpart. Basic flare properties from the three datasets, such as emitted energies and peak luminosities, were then compared to constrain the spectral energy distribution of the flaring emission and the physical conditions of the emitting regions. Flares from stars with and without circumstellar disks were also compared to establish any difference that might be attributed to the presence of disks. Seventy-eight X-ray flares with an optical and/or mIR counterpart were detected. Their optical emission is found to correlate well with, and to be significantly larger than, the X-ray emission. The slopes of the correlations suggest that the difference becomes smaller for the most powerful flares. The mIR flare emission seems to be strongly affected by the presence of a circumstellar disk: flares from stars with disks have a stronger mIR emission with respect to stars without disks. This might be attributed to the reprocessing of the optical (and X-ray) flare emission by the inner circumstellar disk, providing evidence for flare-induced disk heating.

- Manganese abundances in GC & dSph galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/891/85

- Description:
- Manganese abundances are sensitive probes of the progenitors of TypeIa supernovae (SNe Ia). In this work, we present a catalog of manganese abundances in dwarf spheroidal satellites of the Milky Way, measured using medium-resolution spectroscopy. Using a simple chemical evolution model, we infer the manganese yield of SNe Ia in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) and compare to theoretical yields. The sub-solar yield from SNIa ([Mn/Fe]_Ia_=-0.30_-0.03_^+0.03^ at [Fe/H]=-1.5dex, with negligible dependence on metallicity) implies that sub-Chandrasekhar-mass (sub-MCh) white dwarf progenitors are the dominant channel of SNe Ia at early times in this galaxy, although some fraction (>~20%) of M_Ch_ Type Ia or Type Iax SNe are still needed to produce the observed yield. First-order corrections for deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium increase the inferred [Mn/Fe]_Ia_ by as much as ~0.3dex. However, our results also suggest that the nucleosynthetic source of SNe Ia may depend on environment. In particular, we find that dSphs with extended star formation histories (Leo I, Fornax dSphs) appear to have higher [Mn/Fe] at a given metallicity than galaxies with early bursts of star formation (Sculptor dSph), suggesting that M_Ch_ progenitors may become the dominant channel of SNe Ia at later times in a galaxy's chemical evolution.

- MaNGA; parameters of 668 galaxies

- Description:
- The search for new global scaling relations linking the physical properties of galaxies has a fundamental interest. Furthermore, their recovery from spatially resolved relations has been in the spotlight of integral field spectroscopy (IFS). In this study, we investigate the existence of global and local relations between stellar age (Age*) and gas-phase metallicity (Zg). To this aim, we analyze IFS data for a sample of 736 star-forming disk galaxies from the MaNGA survey. We report a positive correlation between the global Zg and D(4000) (an indicator of stellar age), with a slope that decreases with increasing galaxy mass. Locally, a similar trend is found when analyzing the Zg and D(4000) of the star-forming regions, as well as the residuals resulting from removing the radial gradients of both parameters. The local laws have systematically smaller slopes than the global one. We ascribe this difference to random errors that cause the true slope of the Age*-Zg relation to be systematically underestimated when performing a least-squares fitting. The explored relation is intimately linked with the already known relation between gas metallicity and star formation rate at fixed mass, both presenting a common physical origin.

- MASH Catalogues of Planetary Nebulae
- Short Name:
- V/127A
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H{alpha} Planetary Nebula Catalogue (MASH) contains 903 new true, likely and possible Galactic Planetary Nebulae (PNe) discovered from the AAO/UKST H{alpha} survey of the southern Galactic plane. The combination of depth, resolution, uniformity, and areal coverage of the H {alpha}survey has opened up an hitherto unexplored region of parameter space permitting the detection of this significant new PN sample. This catalogue includes also the spectra of the PNe as FITS files (in the "sp" subdirectory), and a gallery of images created as a combination of the H{alpha} and short red images of the survey. The second part, MASH-II (table mash2.dat) consists of over 300 true, likely and possible new Galactic PNe found after re-examination of the entire AAO/UKST H{alpha} survey of the Southern Galactic Plane in digital form. Over 240 of these new candidates were confirmed as bona fide PNe on the basis of spectroscopic observations. The spectra of this supplement will be available in the future.

- Massive stars in the SDSS-IV/APOGEE SURVEY. I.

- Description:
- In this work, we make use of DR14 APOGEE spectroscopic data to study a sample of 92 known OB stars. We developed a near-infrared semi-empirical spectral classification method that was successfully used in case of four new exemplars, previously classified as later B-type stars. Our results agree well with those determined independently from ECHELLE optical spectra, being in line with the spectral types derived from the "canonical" MK blue optical system. This confirms that the APOGEE spectrograph can also be used as a powerful tool in surveys aiming to unveil and study a large number of moderately and highly obscured OB stars still hidden in the Galaxy.

- MASSIVE survey. XII. Early-type galaxy gradients
- Short Name:

- CDS
- Description:
- We measure the stellar populations as a function of the radius for 90 early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the MASSIVE survey, a volume-limited integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) galaxy survey targeting all northern-sky ETGs with an absolute K-band magnitude of M_K_{<}-25.3mag or a stellar mass of M_*_>~4x10^11^M_{sun}_, within 108Mpc. We are able to measure reliable stellar population parameters for individual galaxies out to 10-20kpc (1-3R_e_) depending on the galaxy. Focusing on ~R_e_ (~10kpc), we find significant correlations between the abundance ratios, {sigma}, and M^*^ at a large radius, but we also find that the abundance ratios saturate in the highest-mass bin. We see a strong correlation between the kurtosis of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (h4) and the stellar population parameters beyond R_e_. Galaxies with higher radial anisotropy appear to be older, with metal-poorer stars and enhanced [{alpha}/Fe]. We suggest that the higher radial anisotropy may derive from more accretion of small satellites. Finally, we see some evidence for correlations between environmental metrics (measured locally and on >5Mpc scales) and the stellar populations, as expected if satellites are quenched earlier in denser environments.

- Description:
- The rapid neutron-capture or r-process is thought to produce the majority of the heavy elements (Z>30) in extremely metal-poor stars. The same process is also responsible for a significant fraction of the heavy elements in the Sun. This universality of the r-process is one of its characteristic features, as well as one of the most important clues to its astrophysical origin. We report the discovery of an extremely metal-poor field giant with [Sr,Ba/H]~-6.0 and [Sr,Ba/Fe]~-3.0, the lowest abundances of strontium and barium relative to iron ever observed. Despite its low abundances, the star 2MASS J151113.24-213003.0 has [Sr/Ba]=-0.11+/-0.14, therefore its neutron-capture abundances are consistent with the main solar r-process pattern that has [Sr/Ba]=-0.25. It has been suggested that extremely low neutron-capture abundances are a characteristic of dwarf galaxies, and we find that this star is on a highly eccentric orbit with an apocenter >~100kpc that lies in the disk of satellites in the halo of the Milky Way. We show that other extremely metal-poor stars with low [Sr,Ba/H] and [Sr,Ba/Fe] plus solar [Sr/Ba] tend to have orbits with large apocenters, consistent with a dwarf galaxy origin for this class of object. The nucleosynthesis event that produced the neutron-capture elements in 2MASS J151113.24-213003.0 must produce both strontium and barium together in the solar ratio. We exclude contributions from the s-process in intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch or fast-rotating massive metal-poor stars, pair-instability supernovae, the weak r-process, and neutron-star mergers. We argue that the event was a Pop III or extreme Pop II core-collapse supernova explosion.

- Description:
- The SW Sex stars are assumed to represent a distinguished stage in CV evolution, making it especially important to study them. We discovered a new cataclysmic star and carried out prolonged and precise photometric observations, as well as medium- resolution spectral observations. Modelling these data allowed us to determine the physical parameters and to establish its peculiarities. To obtain a light curve solution we used model whose emission sources are a white dwarf surrounded by an accretion disk with a hot spot, a gaseous stream near the disk's lateral side, and a secondary star filling its Roche lobe. The obtained physical parameters are compared with those of other SW Sex-subtype stars.
