- Description:
- The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project is a dedicated multi-object RM experiment that has spectroscopically monitored a sample of 849 broad-line quasars in a single 7deg^2^ field with the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey spectrograph. The RM quasar sample is flux-limited to i_psf_=21.7mag, and covers a redshift range of 0.1<z<4.5 without any other cuts on quasar properties. Optical spectroscopy was performed during 2014 January-July dark/gray time, with an average cadence of ~4 days, totaling more than 30 epochs. Supporting photometric monitoring in the g and i bands was conducted at multiple facilities including the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the Steward Observatory Bok telescope in 2014, with a cadence of ~2 days and covering all lunar phases. The RM field (RAJ2000=14:14:49.00, DEJ2000=+53:05:00.0) lies within the CFHT-LS W3 field, and coincides with the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) Medium Deep Field MD07, with three prior years of multi-band PS1 light curves. The SDSS-RM six month baseline program aims to detect time lags between the quasar continuum and broad line region (BLR) variability on timescales of up to several months (in the observed frame) for ~10% of the sample, and to anchor the time baseline for continued monitoring in the future to detect lags on longer timescales and at higher redshift. SDSS-RM is the first major program to systematically explore the potential of RM for broad-line quasars at z>0.3, and will investigate the prospects of RM with all major broad lines covered in optical spectroscopy.

- SDSS spectral analysis of IR-bright DOGs

- Description:
- We present the ionized gas properties of infrared (IR)-bright dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) that show an extreme optical/IR color, (i-[22])_AB_>7.0, selected with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). For 36 IR-bright DOGs that show [OIII]{lambda}5007 emission in the SDSS spectra, we performed a detailed spectral analysis to investigate their ionized gas properties. In particular, we measured the velocity offset (the velocity with respect to the systemic velocity measured from the stellar absorption lines) and the velocity dispersion of the [OIII] line. We found that the derived velocity offset and dispersion of most IR-bright DOGs are larger than those of Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy2s) at z<0.3, meaning that the IR-bright DOGs show relatively strong outflows compared to Sy2s. This can be explained by the difference in IR luminosity contributed from active galactic nuclei, L_IR_ (AGN), because we found that (i) L_IR_ (AGN) correlates with the velocity offset and dispersion of [OIII] and (ii) our IR-bright DOG sample has larger L_IR_ (AGN) than Sy2s. Nevertheless, the fact that about 75% IR- bright DOGs have a large (>300km/s) velocity dispersion, which is a larger fraction compared to other AGN populations, suggests that IR-bright DOGs are good laboratories to investigate AGN feedback. The velocity offset and dispersion of [OIII] and [NeIII]{lambda}3869 are larger than those of [OII]{lambda}3727, which indicates that the highly ionized gas tends to show stronger outflows.

- Description:
- We study a combined sample of 264 star-forming, 51 composite, and 73 active galaxies using optical spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. We examine optical and mid-IR spectroscopic diagnostics that probe the amount of star formation and relative energetic contributions from star formation and an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Overall we find good agreement between optical and mid-IR diagnostics. Misclassifications of galaxies based on the SDSS spectra are rare despite the presence of dust obscuration. The luminosity of the [Ne II] 12.8{mu}m emission line is well correlated with the star formation rate measured from the SDSS spectra, and this holds for the star-forming, composite, and AGN-dominated systems. AGNs show a clear excess of [Ne III] 15.6{mu}m emission relative to star-forming and composite systems. We find good qualitative agreement between various parameters that probe the relative contributions of the AGN and star formation, including the mid-IR spectral slope, the ratio of the [Ne V] 14.3{mu}m to [Ne II] 12.8{mu}m fluxes, the equivalent widths of the 7.7{mu}m, 11.3{mu}m, and 17{mu}m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features, and the optical "D" parameter which measures the distance at which a source lies from the locus of star-forming galaxies in the optical BPT emission-line diagnostic diagram. We also consider the behavior of the three individual PAH features by examining how their flux ratios depend upon the degree of AGN dominance. We find that the PAH 11.3{mu}m feature is significantly suppressed in the most AGN-dominated systems.

- SEAMBHs IX. 10 new H{beta} light curves
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/856/6
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- As one paper in a series reporting on a large reverberation mapping campaign of super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we present the results of 10 SEAMBHs monitored spectroscopically during 2015-2017. Six of them are observed for the first time, and have generally higher 5100{AA} luminosities than the SEAMBHs monitored in our campaign from 2012 to 2015; the remaining four are repeat observations to check if their previous lags change. Similar to the previous SEAMBHs, the H{beta} time lags of the newly observed objects are shorter than the values predicted by the canonical RH{beta}-L5100 relation of sub-Eddington AGNs, by factors of ~2-6, depending on the accretion rate. The four previously observed objects have lags consistent with previous measurements. We provide linear regressions for the RH{beta}-L5100 relation, solely for the SEAMBH sample and for low-accretion AGNs. We find that the relative strength of Fe ii and the profile of the H{beta} emission line can be used as proxies of accretion rate, showing that the shortening of H{beta} lags depends on accretion rates. The recent SDSS-RM discovery of shortened H{beta} lags in AGNs with low accretion rates provides compelling evidence for retrograde accretion onto the black hole. These evidences show that the canonical RH{beta}-L5100 relation holds only in AGNs with moderate accretion rates. At low accretion rates, it should be revised to include the effects of black hole spin, whereas the accretion rate itself becomes a key factor in the regime of high accretion rates.

- SEAMBHs. V. The third year
- Short Name:

- Description:
- This paper reports results of the third-year campaign of monitoring super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) between 2014 and 2015. Ten new targets were selected from the quasar sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which have generally been more luminous than the SEAMBH candidates in the last two years. H{beta} lags ({tau}_H{beta}_) in five of the 10 quasars have been successfully measured in this monitoring season. We find that the lags are generally shorter, by large factors, than those of objects with same optical luminosity, in light of the well-known R_H{beta}_-L_5100_ relation. The five quasars have dimensionless accretion rates of dM/dt=10-10^3^. Combining these with measurements of the previous SEAMBHs, we find that the reduction of H{beta} lags depends tightly on accretion rates, {tau}_H{beta}_/{tau}_R-L_{propto}(dM/dt)^-0.42^, where {tau}_R-L_ is the H{beta} lag from the normal R_H{beta}_-L_5100_ relation. Fitting 63 mapped AGNs, we present a new scaling relation for the broad-line region: R_H{beta}_={alpha}_1_l_44_^{beta}1^min [1,(dM/dt)/(dM/dt)_c_)^-{gamma}1^], where l_44_=L_5100_/10^44^erg/s is the 5100{AA} continuum luminosity, and the coefficients are {alpha}_1_=29.6_-2.8_^+2.7^ lt-day, {beta}1=0.56_-0.03_^+0.03^, {gamma}1=0.52_-0.16_^+0.33^, and (dM/dt)_c_=11.19_-6.22_^+2.29^. This relation is applicable to AGNs over a wide range of accretion rates, from 10^-3^ to 10^3^. Implications of this new relation are briefly discussed.

- SEAMBHs XII. Reberberation mapping for 15 PG QSOs
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/253/20
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In this work, we present the first results of the long-term high-cadence spectroscopic monitoring of 15 PG quasars with relatively strong FeII emission, as a part of a broader reverberation mapping campaign performed using the Calar Alto Observatory's 2.2m telescope. The V-band, 5100{AA} continuum, and H{beta} broad emission line light curves are measured for a set of quasars for periods ranging from dozens to more than a hundred epochs between 2017 May and 2020 July. Accurate time lags between the variations of the H{beta} broad-line fluxes and the optical continuum strength are obtained for all 15 quasars, ranging from 17.0_-3.2_^+2.5^ to 95.9_-23.9_^+7.1^ days in the rest frame. The virial masses of the central supermassive black holes are derived for all 15 quasars, ranging between 0.50_-0.19_^+0.18^ and 19.17_-2.73_^+2.98^ in units of 10^7^M_{sun}_. For 11 of the objects in our sample, this is the first reverberation analysis to be published. Of the rest, two objects have been the subject of previous reverberation studies, but we determine time lags for these that are only half as long as those found in the earlier investigations, which had only been able to sample much more sparsely. The remaining two objects have previously been monitored with high sampling rates. Our results here are consistent with the earlier findings, in the sense that the time lag and the line width vary inversely, consistent with virialization.

- Description:
- Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones of M dwarfs are good candidates for the study of habitability and detection of biosignatures. To search for these planets, we analyze all available radial velocity data and apply four signal detection criteria to select the optimal candidates. We find 10 strong candidates satisfying these criteria and three weak candidates showing inconsistency over time due to data samplings. We also confirm three previous planet candidates and improve their orbital solutions through combined analyses of updated data sets. Among the strong planet candidates, HIP38594b is a temperate super-Earth with a mass of 8.2+/-1.7M_{Earth}_ and an orbital period of 60.7+/-0.1 days, orbiting around an early-type M dwarf. Early-type M dwarfs are less active and thus are better hosts for habitable planets than mid-type and late-type M dwarfs. Moreover, we report the detection of five two-planet systems, including two systems made up of a warm or cold Neptune and a cold Jupiter, consistent with a positive correlation between these two types of planets. We also detect three temperate Neptunes, four cold Neptunes, and four cold Jupiters, contributing to a rarely explored planet population. Due to their proximity to the Sun, these planets on wide orbits are appropriate targets for direct imaging by future facilities such as the Habitable Exoplanet Observatory and the Extremely Large Telescope.

- Description:
- By measuring the elemental abundances of a star, we can gain insight into the composition of its initial gas cloud-the formation site of the star and its planets. Planet formation requires metals, the availability of which is determined by the elemental abundance. In the case where metals are extremely deficient, planet formation can be stifled. To investigate such a scenario requires a large sample of metal-poor stars and a search for planets therein. This paper focuses on the selection and validation of a halo star sample. We select ~17000 metal-poor halo stars based on their Galactic kinematics, and confirm their low metallicities ([Fe/H]<-0.5), using spectroscopy from the literature. Furthermore, we perform high-resolution spectroscopic observations using LBT/PEPSI and conduct detailed metallicity ([Fe/H]) analyses on a sample of 13 previously-known halo stars that also have hot kinematics. We can use the halo star sample presented here to measure the frequency of planets and to test planet formation in extremely metal-poor environments. The result of the planet search and its implications will be presented and discussed in a companion paper by Boley et al.

- SEDs of ELAIS-S1 mid-IR sources
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/684/136
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the broadband SEDs of the largest available highly complete (72%) spectroscopic sample of MIR-selected galaxies and AGNs at intermediate redshift. The sample contains 203 extragalactic sources from the 15um ELAIS-SWIRE survey, all with measured spectroscopic redshift. Most of these sources have full multiwavelength coverage from the FUV (GALEX) to the FIR (Spitzer) and lie in the redshift range 0.1<z<1.3. This large sample allows us for the first time to characterize the spectral properties of sources responsible for the strong evolution observed in the MIR. Based on SED-fitting, we have classified the MIR sources, identifying AGN signatures in about 50% of them. This fraction is significantly higher than that derived from optical spectroscopy (~29%) and is due in particular to the identification of AGN activity in objects spectroscopically classified as galaxies (the spectroscopic classification may be somewhat unreliable because of host galaxy dilution in the optical). It is likely that in most of our objects, the AGN is either obscured or low luminosity, and thus dominates the energetic output only in the MIR, showing up just in the range where the host galaxy SED has a minimum. The fraction of AGNs strongly depends on flux density, with that derived through the SED-fitting about 20% at S_15um_~0.5-1mJy and gradually increasing to 100% at S_15um_>10mJy, while that obtained from optical spectroscopy is never >30%, even at higher flux densities.

- SFI++ II. A new I-band Tully-Fisher catalog
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/172/599
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present the SFI++ data set, a homogeneously derived catalog of photometric and rotational properties and the Tully-Fisher distances and peculiar velocities derived from them. We make use of digital optical images, optical long-slit spectra, and global HI line profiles to extract parameters of relevance to disk scaling relations, incorporating several previously published data sets as well as a new photometric sample of some 2000 objects. According to the completeness of available redshift samples over the sky area, we exploit both a modified percolation algorithm and the Voronoi-Delaunay method to assign individual galaxies to groups as well as clusters, thereby reducing scatter introduced by local orbital motions. We also provide corrections to the peculiar velocities for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous Malmquist bias, making use of the 2MASS Redshift Survey density field to approximate large-scale structure. The final SFI++ peculiar velocity catalog contains 4861 field and cluster galaxies.
