- We derive a new abundance for vanadium in the bright, mildly metal-poor red giant Arcturus. This star has an excellent high-resolution spectral atlas and well-understood atmospheric parameters, and it displays a rich set of neutral vanadium lines that are available for abundance extraction. We employ a newly recorded set of laboratory FTS spectra to investigate any potential discrepancies in previously reported V I log(gf) values near 900nm. These new spectra support our earlier laboratory transition data and the calibration method utilized in that study. We then perform a synthetic spectrum analysis of weak V I features in Arcturus, deriving log{epsilon}(V)=3.54+/-0.01 ({sigma}=0.04) from 55 lines. There are no significant abundance trends with wavelength, line strength, or lower excitation energy.

- Compared to high ionization CIV absorption lines, variable MgII absorption lines are rare. Using spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the variations in MgII narrow absorption lines (NALs) for quasars with multi-epoch observations. We have compiled 8958 MgII NALs in the spectral regions from the red wings of CIV emission lines to the red wings of MgII emission lines. Among these 8958 MgII NALs, 22 variable NALs are detected with |{Delta}W_r_^{lambda}2796^|>=3{sigma}_W_ and with velocity offsets ranging from {upsilon}_r_=522 to 145513km/s. We find that: (1) the detected frequency of MgII NALs with {upsilon}_r_<=10000km/s is significantly larger than the uniformly random value expected for the MgII NALs with {upsilon}_r_>10000km/s, (2) the incidence rates of the variable MgII NALs with {upsilon}_r_<=10000km/s are much larger than those with {upsilon}_r_>10000km/s, (3) the velocity offsets of variable MgII NALs with {upsilon}_r_<=10000km/s are much smaller than the maximum velocities expected from radiation-driven outflows, and (4) the variations of variable MgII NALs with {upsilon}_r_<=10000km/s are obviously correlated with the changes in the quasar radiative output. Therefore, the 16 variable MgII NALs, whose velocities are smaller than the maximum velocities expected from radiation-driven outflows, are likely related to quasar outflows, while the 6 variable MgII NALs, whose velocities are much larger than the maximum velocities expected from radiation-driven outflows, possibly originated in intervening gas. We also find that both the variations and fractional variations in absorption strengths are not related to the velocity offsets of MgII NALs and the time intervals between the two epochs of observations. Also, the fractional variations in absorption strengths are inversely correlated with absorption strengths. In addition, both the associated and intervening MgII NALs can significantly vary on a timescale of days.

- An increasing number of non-terminal eruptions are being found in the numerous surveys for optical transients. Very little is known about these giant eruptions, their progenitors and their evolutionary state. A greatly improved census of the likely progenitor class, including the most luminous evolved stars, the luminous blue variables (LBVs), and the warm and cool hypergiants is now needed for a complete picture of the final pre-supernova stages of very massive stars. We have begun a survey of the evolved and unstable luminous star populations in several nearby resolved galaxies. In this second paper on M31 and M33, we review the spectral characteristics, spectral energy distributions, circumstellar ejecta, and evidence for mass loss for 82 luminous and variable stars. We show that many of these stars have warm circumstellar dust including several of the Fe II emission line stars, but conclude that the confirmed LBVs in M31 and M33 do not. The confirmed LBVs have relatively low wind speeds even in their hot, quiescent or visual minimum state compared to the B-type supergiants and Of/WN stars which they spectroscopically resemble. The nature of the Fe II emission line stars and their relation to the LBV state remains uncertain, but some have properties in common with the warm hypergiants and the sgB[e] stars. Several individual stars are discussed in detail. We identify three possible candidate LBVs and three additional post-red supergiant candidates. We suggest that M33-013406.63 (UIT301,B416) is not an LBV/S Dor variable, but is a very luminous late O-type supergiant and one of the most luminous stars or pair of stars in M33.

- We developed a spectroscopic monitoring project to investigate the kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with ultrafast outflows (UFOs). Mrk 79 is a radio-quiet AGN with UFOs and warm absorbers and has been monitored by three reverberation mapping (RM) campaigns, but its BLR kinematics are not yet understood. In this paper, we report the results from a new RM campaign of Mrk 79, which was undertaken with the Lijiang 2.4m telescope. Mrk 79 appears to come out the faint state, with the mean flux approximately a magnitude fainter than the historical record. We successfully measured the lags of the broad emission lines including H{beta}{lambda}4861, H{gamma}{lambda}4340, HeII{lambda}4686, and HeI{lambda}5876 with respect to the varying AGN continuum. Based on the broad H{beta}{lambda}4861 line, we measured a black hole mass of M_{bullet}_=5.13_-1.55_^+1.57^x10^7^M_{sun}_, and an estimated accretion rate of dM/dt_{bullet}_=(0.05+/-0.02)L_Edd_c^-2^, indicating that Mrk 79 is a sub-Eddington accretor. We found that Mrk 79 deviates from the canonical Radius-Luminosity relationship. The marginal blueshift of the broad HeII{lambda}4686 line detected from the rms spectrum indicates outflow of high- ionization gas. The velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad H{gamma}{lambda}4340, H{beta}{lambda}4861, and HeI{lambda}5876 lines show similar signatures such that the largest lag occurs in the red wing of the lines and then the lag decreases to both sides. These signatures may suggest that the BLR of Keplerian motion probably exists as outflow gas motion. All findings including UFOs, warm absorbers, and the kinematics of high- and low-ionization BLR, may provide indirect evidence that the BLR of Mrk 79 probably originates from a disk wind.

- We report spectroscopic and differential photometric observations of the A-type system V482 Per, which reveal it to be a rare hierarchical quadruple system containing two eclipsing binaries. One binary has the previously known orbital period of 2.4 days and a circular orbit, and the other a period of 6 days, a slightly eccentric orbit (e=0.11), and shallow eclipses only 2.3% deep. The two binaries revolve around their common center of mass in a highly elongated orbit (e=0.85) with a period of 16.67yr. Radial velocities are measured for all components from our quadruple-lined spectra and are combined with the light curves and measurements of times of minimum light for the 2.4 day binary to solve for the elements of the inner and outer orbits simultaneously. The line-of-sight inclination angles of the three orbits are similar, suggesting they may be close to coplanar. The available observations appear to indicate that the 6 day binary experiences significant retrograde apsidal motion in the amount of about 60 deg per century. We derive absolute masses for the four stars good to better than 1.5%, along with radii with formal errors of 1.1% and 3.5% for the 2.4 day binary and ~9% for the 6 day binary. A comparison of these and other physical properties with current stellar evolution models gives excellent agreement for a metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.15 and an age of 360Myr.

- As a result of the next cycle of our long-term monitoring, we present our UBV JHKLM photometry for the symbiotic nova V1016 Cyg in 2008-2014. The star continued to systematically fade and redden in UBV: over this period, the brightness declined by 0.1m in V and by 0.2m in B and U ,the B-V color index increased by 0.1m, and U-B barely changed. On the color-color (U-B, B-V) diagram, the star moved approximately horizontally rightward with a slight bluing in U-B starting from 2000. Our JHKLM photometry has shown a decline in the mean infrared (IR) brightness and a rise in the mean IR color indices after 2004 due to an increase in the optical depth of the dust envelope. The brightness decline and reddening of the Mira in the near infrared reached their extreme values over the entire period of the system's observations by the end of 2014. The pulsation period of the Mira is determined with confidence: P=465+/-5-days. The distance to the Mira, D=2.92+/-0.16kpc, ant its parameters, the radius R*=(470+/-50)R_{sun}_ and luminosity L*=(9200+/=1900)L_{sun}_, have been estimated from the observations of V1016 Cyg at its maximum J brightness and at its minimum J-H color index. The temperature of the star during its pulsations varied within the range T* =2100-2700K. We have estimated the parameters of the dust envelope near its maximum (in 2004) and minimum (in 2012-2014) IR brightness. The mass of the dust envelope almost doubled in ten years, with the rate of dust supply being {Delta}Md~10^-7^M_{sun}_/yr. Using a low-resolution spectrograph, we performed absolute spectrophotometry for V1016 Cyg in 1995-2013 in the range {lambda}4340-7130{AA}. We have shown that almost all absolute fluxes in lines and in continuum at {lambda}4400{AA} decrease monotonically after 2000, while the relative intensities of [OIII], [FeVII], and [CaVII] lines increase after the minimum that probably occurred in the 1990s. The significant (approximately by a factor of 10 from 1995 to 2013) decrease of the flux in the Raman OVI {lambda}6825 line reflects a change of conditions in the formation zone of this line due to the absorption of some OVI {lambda}1032 photons in the newly forming dust envelope of the cool component.

- The photoelectric UBV observations of the peculiar symbiotic star V1329 Cyg performed at the Crimean Station of the SAI-MSU during 245 nights over the period 2003-2014 are presented. The star's light curves since 1973 from the Crimean observations are shown. The brightness decline after its outburst over the last 40 years was 0.8m-1.0m. The phase color curves at phases 0.2 and 0.8 have maxima. Their qualitative interpretation in terms of the model of interacting winds in symbiotic binary star systems is proposed. The orbital period of the binary system has been redetermined. The spectroscopic observations at the 125-cm telescope of the Crimean Station from 1994 to 2014 have confirmed the change in the system's emission spectrum with orbital phase.

- We present the discovery of Kepler-88d (P_d_=1403{+/-}14days, Msin_i_d__=965{+/-}44M_{Earth}_=3.04{+/-}0.13M_J_, e_d_=0.41{+/-}0.03) based on six years of radial velocity (RV) follow-up from the W.M.Keck Observatory High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer spectrograph. Kepler-88 has two previously identified planets. Kepler-88b (KOI-142.01) transits in the NASA Kepler photometry and has very large transit timing variations (TTVs). Nesvorny+, performed a dynamical analysis of the TTVs to uniquely identify the orbital period and mass of the perturbing planet (Kepler-88c), which was later was confirmed with RVs from the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP). To fully explore the architecture of this system, we performed photodynamical modeling on the Kepler photometry combined with the RVs from Keck and OHP and stellar parameters from spectroscopy and Gaia. Planet d is not detectable in the photometry, and long-baseline RVs are needed to ascertain its presence. A photodynamical model simultaneously optimized to fit the RVs and Kepler photometry yields the most precise planet masses and orbital properties yet for b and c: P_b_=10.91647{+/-}0.00014days, M_b_=9.5{+/-}1.2M_{Earth}_, P_c_=22.2649{+/-}0.0007days, and M_c=214.0{+/-}5.3M_{Earth}_. The photodynamical solution also finds that planets b and c have low eccentricites and low mutual inclination, are apsidally anti-aligned, and have conjunctions on the same hemisphere of the star. Continued RV follow-up of systems with small planets will improve our understanding of the link between inner planetary system architectures and giant planets.

- We have obtained radial velocity measurements for 51 new globular clusters around the Sombrero galaxy. These measurements were obtained using spectroscopic observations from the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Hydra spectrograph at WIYN. Combining our own past measurements and velocity measurements obtained from the literature, we have constructed a large database of radial velocities that contains a total of 360 confirmed globular clusters. Previous studies' analyses of the kinematics and mass profile of the Sombrero globular cluster system have been constrained to the inner ~9' (~24kpc or ~5R_e_), but our new measurements have increased the radial coverage of the data, allowing us to determine the kinematic properties of M104 out to ~15' (~41kpc or ~9R_e_). We use our set of radial velocities to study the GC system kinematics and to determine the mass profile and V-band mass-to-light profile of the galaxy. We find that M/L_V_ increases from 4.5 at the center to a value of 20.9 at 41kpc (~9R_e_ or 15'), which implies that the dark matter halo extends to the edge of our available data set. We compare our mass profile at 20kpc (~4R_e_or ~7.4') to the mass computed from X-ray data and find good agreement. We also use our data to look for rotation in the globular cluster system as a whole, as well as in the red and blue subpopulations. We find no evidence for significant rotation in any of these samples.
