- Description:
- PSR J1306-40 is a millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary with a non-degenerate companion in an unusually long ~1.097 day orbit. We present new optical photometry and spectroscopy of this system, and model these data to constrain fundamental properties of the binary such as the component masses and distance. The optical data imply a minimum neutron star mass of 1.75+/-0.09M_{sun}_ (1{sigma}) and a high, nearly edge-on inclination. The light curves suggest a large hot spot on the companion, suggestive of a portion of the pulsar wind being channeled to the stellar surface by the magnetic field of the secondary, mediated via an intrabinary shock. The H{alpha} line profiles switch rapidly from emission to absorption near the companion inferior conjunction, consistent with an eclipse of the compact emission region at these phases. At our optically inferred distance of 4.7+/-0.5kpc, the X-ray luminosity is ~10^33^erg/s, brighter than nearly all known redbacks in the pulsar state. The long-period, subgiant-like secondary, and luminous X-ray emission suggest this system may be part of the expanding class of MSP binaries that are progenitors to typical field pulsar-white dwarf binaries.

- Description:
- In order to study short timescale optical variability of {gamma}-ray blazar S5 0716+714, quasi-simultaneous spectroscopic and multiband photometric observations were performed from 2018 November to 2019 March with the 2.4m optical telescope located at Lijiang Observatory of Yunnan Observatories. The observed spectra are well fitted with a power law F_{lambda}_=A{lambda}^-{alpha}^ (spectral index {alpha}>0). Correlations found between {dot}{alpha}, {dot}A, {dot}A/A, {dot}F_{lambda}_, and {dot}F_{lambda}_/F_{lambda}_ are consistent with the trend of bluer-when-brighter (BWB). It is the same case for colors, magnitudes, color variation rates, and magnitude variation rates of photometric observations. The variations of {alpha} lead those of F_{lambda}_. Also, the color variations lead magnitude variations. The observational data are mostly distributed in the I(+,+) and III(-,-) quadrants of the coordinate system. Both spectroscopic and photometric observations show BWB behaviors in S5 0716+714. The observed BWB may be explained by the shock-jet model, and its appearance may depend on the relative position of the observational frequency ranges with respect to the synchrotron peak frequencies, e.g., at the left of the peak frequencies. Fractional variability amplitudes are F_var_~40% for both spectroscopic and photometric observations. Variations of {alpha} indicate variations of relativistic electron distribution producing the optical spectra.

- Description:
- We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations, from 4 to 482 days after explosion, of the Type II-plateau (II-P) supernova (SN) 2017eaw in NGC 6946. SN 2017eaw is a normal SN II-P intermediate in properties between, for example, SN 1999em and SN 2012aw and the more luminous SN 2004et, also in NGC6946. We have determined that the extinction to SN 2017eaw is primarily due to the Galactic foreground and that the SN site metallicity is likely subsolar. We have also independently confirmed a tip-of-the-red-giant-branch (TRGB) distance to NGC 6946 of 7.73+/-0.78Mpc. The distances to the SN that we have also estimated via both the standardized candle method and expanding photosphere method corroborate the TRGB distance. We confirm the SN progenitor identity in pre-explosion archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer Space Telescope images, via imaging of the SN through our HST Target of Opportunity program. Detailed modeling of the progenitor's spectral energy distribution indicates that the star was a dusty, luminous red supergiant consistent with an initial mass of ~15M_{sun}_.

- Byurakan-IRAS galaxies (BIG) with SDSS spectra
- Short Name:
- J/PAZh/44/383
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The sample of Byurakan-IRAS galaxies (BIG) has been created based on optical identifications of IRAS Point Source Catalog (PSC) at high galactic latitudes. As a result, 1178 galaxies have been identified. 172 of them have been observed spectroscopically with Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO, Armenia) 2.6m, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia) 6m and Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP, France) 1.93m telescopes. Later on, spectra were obtained for more 83 BIG objects in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We have extracted and studied these spectra, classified them and measured spectral features. Diagnostic diagrams have been built to distinguish starbursts (SB), LINERs and Seyfert galaxies. Cross-correlations were made for these objects with multiwavelength (MW) catalogues and their physical properties were studied. Among these 83 objects, 55 HII, 8 Seyfert galaxies, 2 LINERs, 4 other AGN, 6 composite spectrum objects, and 8 other emission-line galaxies have been revealed. Three of these objects are Ultra-Luminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRG).

- CaII index of SMC red giant branch stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/136/1039
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present stellar metallicities derived from Ca II triplet spectroscopy in over 350 red giant branch stars in 13 fields distributed in different positions in the Small Magellanic Cloud, ranging from ~1{deg} to ~4{deg} from its center. In the innermost fields, the average metallicity is [Fe/H]~-1. This value decreases when we move away toward outermost regions. This is the first detection of a spectroscopic metallicity gradient in this galaxy. We show that the metallicity gradient is related to an age gradient, in the sense that more metal-rich stars, which are also younger, are concentrated in the central regions of the galaxy.

- Calcium triplet index in LMC stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/135/836
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Infrared CaII triplet (CaT) spectroscopy has been used to derive stellar metallicities for individual stars in four Large Magellanic Cloud fields situated at galactocentric distances of 3{deg}, 5{deg}, 6{deg}, and 8{deg} to the north of the bar. The combination of spectroscopy with deep CCD photometry has allowed us to break the RGB age-metallicity degeneracy and compute the ages for the objects observed spectroscopically. The obtained age-metallicity relationships (AMRs) for our four fields are statistically indistinguishable. We conclude that the lower mean metallicity in the outermost field is a consequence of it having a lower fraction of intermediate-age stars, which are more metal-rich than the older stars. The disk AMR is similar to that for clusters. However, the lack of objects with ages between 3 and 10Gyr is not observed in the field population. Finally, we used data from the literature to derive consistently the AMR of the bar. Simple chemical evolution models have been used to reproduce the observed AMRs with the purpose of investigating which mechanism has participated in the evolution of the disk and bar.

- CALIFA SFRs. II. Bulges, bars & disks
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/848/87
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We estimate the current extinction-corrected H{alpha} star formation rate (SFR) of the different morphological components that shape galaxies (bulges, bars, and disks). We use a multicomponent photometric decomposition based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging to Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes for a sample of 219 galaxies. This analysis reveals an enhancement of the central SFR and specific SFR (sSFR = SFR/M*) in barred galaxies. Along the main sequence, we find that more massive galaxies in total have undergone efficient suppression (quenching) of their star formation, in agreement with many studies. We discover that more massive disks have had their star formation quenched as well. We evaluate which mechanisms might be responsible for this quenching process. The presence of type 2 AGNs plays a role at damping the sSFR in bulges and less efficiently in disks. Also, the decrease in the sSFR of the disk component becomes more noticeable for stellar masses around 10^10.5^M_{sun}_; for bulges, it is already present at ~10^9.5^M_{sun}_. The analysis of the line- of-sight stellar velocity dispersions ({sigma}) for the bulge component and of the corresponding Faber-Jackson relation shows that AGNs tend to have slightly higher {sigma} values than star-forming galaxies for the same mass. Finally, the impact of environment is evaluated by means of the projected galaxy density, {Sigma}5. We find that the SFR of both bulges and disks decreases in intermediate- to high-density environments. This work reflects the potential of combining IFS data with 2D multicomponent decompositions to shed light on the processes that regulate the SFR.

- Candidate Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies at z~3.8
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/823/11
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present new observations of the field containing the z=3.786 protocluster PC 217.96+32.3. We confirm that it is one of the largest known and most overdense high-redshift structures. Such structures are rare even in the largest cosmological simulations. We used the Mayall/MOSAIC1.1 imaging camera to image a 1.2x0.6{deg} area (~150x75 comoving Mpc) surrounding the protocluster's core and discovered 165 candidate Ly{alpha} emitting galaxies (LAEs) and 788 candidate Lyman Break galaxies (LBGs). There are at least two overdense regions traced by the LAEs, the largest of which shows an areal overdensity in its core (i.e., within a radius of 2.5 comoving Mpc) of 14+/-7 relative to the average LAE spatial density (\bar{rho}) in the imaged field. Further, \bar{rho} is twice that derived by other field LAE surveys. Spectroscopy with Keck/DEIMOS yielded redshifts for 164 galaxies (79 LAEs and 85 LBGs); 65 lie at a redshift of 3.785+/-0.010. The velocity dispersion of galaxies near the core is {sigma}=350+/-40km/s, a value robust to selection effects. The overdensities are likely to collapse into systems with present-day masses of >10^15^M_{sun}_ and >6x10^14^M_{sun}_. The low velocity dispersion may suggest a dynamically young protocluster. We find a weak trend between narrow-band (Ly{alpha}) luminosity and environmental density: the Ly{alpha} luminosity is enhanced on average by 1.35x within the protocluster core. There is no evidence that the Ly{alpha} equivalent width depends on environment. These suggest that star formation and/or active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity is enhanced in the higher-density regions of the structure. PC 217.96+32.3 is a Coma cluster analog, witnessed in the process of formation.

- Candidate spectrophotometric standard DA WDs
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/872/199
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present precise photometry and spectroscopy for 23 candidate spectrophotometric standard white dwarfs. The selected stars are distributed in the Northern hemisphere and around the celestial equator, and are all fainter than r~16.5mag. This network of stars, when established as standards and together with the three Hubble Space Telescope primary CALSPEC white dwarfs, will provide a set of spectrophotometric standards to directly calibrate data products to better than 1%. In future deep photometric surveys and facilities, these new faint standard white dwarfs will have enough signal-to-noise ratio to be measured accurately while still avoiding saturation. They will also fall within the dynamic range of large telescopes and their instruments for the foreseeable future. This paper discusses the provenance of the observational data for our candidate standard stars.

- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/900/42
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- The mass, origin, and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 have been intensely debated, following the claim that it hosts an ~70M_{sun}_ black hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for Galactic remnants. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of its Paschen lines, using the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope. We find that Pa{beta} and Pa{gamma} (after subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked disk profile. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the secondary, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13km/s, for different methods of profile modeling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk traces the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (a proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer part of the disk) is ~70km/s, larger than the orbital velocity of the secondary and inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4-8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the intensity ratio of the blue and red peaks has a sinusoidal behavior in phase with the secondary, which we attribute to external irradiation of the outer part of the disk. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of competing scenarios proposed for LB-1. Further astrometric Gaia data will test between alternative solutions.
