- We use the Gaia DR2 distances of about 700 mid-infrared selected young stellar objects in the benchmark giant molecular cloud Orion A to infer its 3D shape and orientation. We find that Orion A is not the fairly straight filamentary cloud that we see in (2D) projection, but instead a cometary-like cloud oriented toward the Galactic plane, with two distinct components: a denser and enhanced star-forming (bent) Head, and a lower density and star-formation quieter ~75pc long Tail. The true extent of Orion A is not the projected ~40pc but ~90pc, making it by far the largest molecular cloud in the local neighborhood. Its aspect ratio (~30:1) and high column-density fraction (~45%) make it similar to large-scale Milky Way filaments ("bones"), despite its distance to the galactic mid-plane being an order of magnitude larger than typically found for these structures.

- The three-dimensional (3D) shape of a galaxy inevitably is tied to how it has formed and evolved and to its dark matter halo. Local extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs; defined as having an average gas-phase metallicity <0.1 solar) are important objects for understanding galaxy evolution largely because they appear to be caught in the act of accreting gas from the cosmic web, and their 3D shape may reflect this. Here, we report on the 3D shape of XMPs as inferred from their observed projected minor-to-major axial ratios using a hierarchical Bayesian inference model, which determines the likely shape and orientation of each galaxy, while simultaneously inferring the average shape and dispersion. We selected a sample of 149 XMPs and divided it into three subsamples according to physical size and found that (1) the stellar component of XMPs of all sizes tends to be triaxial, with an intermediate axis ~0.7 times the longest axis and that (2) smaller XMPs tend to be relatively thicker, with the shortest axis going from ~0.15 times the longest axis for the large galaxies to ~0.4 for the small galaxies. We provide the inferred 3D shape and inclination of the individual XMPs in electronic format. We show that our results for the intermediate axis are not clouded by a selection effect against face-on XMPs. We discuss how an intermediate axis significantly smaller than the longest axis may be produced by several mechanisms, including lopsided gas accretion, non-axisymmetric star formation, or coupling with an elongated dark matter halo. Large relative thickness may reflect slow rotation, stellar feedback, or recent gas accretion.

- We present B, V time-series photometry of Andromeda XIX (And XIX), the most extended (half-light radius of 6.2') of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal companions, which we observed with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We surveyed a 23'x23' area centered on And XIX and present the deepest color-magnitude diagram (CMD) ever obtained for this galaxy, reaching, at V~26.3mag, about one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The CMD shows a prominent and slightly widened red giant branch, along with a predominantly red HB, which extends to the blue to significantly populate the classical instability strip. We have identified 39 pulsating variable stars, of which 31 are of RR Lyrae type and 8 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). Twelve of the RR Lyrae variables and three of the ACs are located within And XIX's half light radius. The average period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (<P_ab_>{=}0.62days, {sigma}=0.03days) and the period-amplitude diagram qualify And XIX as an Oosterhoff-Intermediate system. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars (<V(RR)>=25.34mag, {sigma}=0.10mag), we determine a distance modulus of (m-M)_0_=24.52+/-0.23mag in a scale where the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is 18.5+/-0.1mag. The ACs follow a well-defined Period-Wesenheit (PW) relation that appears to be in very good agreement with the PW relationship defined by the ACs in the LMC.

- We present 248 speckle observations of 43 binary and 19 trinary star systems chosen to make progress in two main areas of investigation: the fundamental properties of metal-poor stars and star formation mechanisms. The observations were taken at the Gemini North and South telescopes during the period 2015 July to 2018 April, mainly with the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument but also with a few early results from the new 'Alopeke speckle camera at Gemini North. We find that the astrometry and photometry of these observations as a whole are consistent with previous work at Gemini. We present five new visual orbits for systems important in understanding metal-poor stars, three of which have orbital periods of less than 4 yr, and we indicate the degree to which these and future observations can impact our knowledge of stellar properties and star formation. In particular, we find a decrease in mass at fixed spectral type for metal-poor stars versus their solar-metallicity analogs that is consistent with predictions that are made from current stellar models.

- The Spitzer Space Telescope has identified a population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 that may play an important role in the evolution of massive galaxies. We measure the stellar masses (M_*_) of two populations of Spitzer-selected ULIRGs that have extremely red R-[24] colors (dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) and compare our results with submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs). One set of 39 DOGs has a local maximum in their mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest frame 1.6um associated with stellar emission ("bump DOGs"), while the other set of 51 DOGs have power-law mid-IR SEDs that are typical of obscured active galactic nuclei ("power-law DOGs"). We measure M_*_ by applying Charlot & Bruzual (1991ApJ...367..126C) stellar population synthesis models to broadband photometry in the rest-frame ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared of each of these populations.

- We use Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), AKARI, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) data to select local analogs of high-redshift (z~2) dust obscured galaxies (DOGs). We identify 47 local DOGs with S_12{mu}m_/S_0.22{mu}m_>=892 and S_12{mu}m_>20mJy at 0.05<z<0.08 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7. The infrared (IR) luminosities of these DOGs are in the range 3.4x10^10^(L_{sun}_)<~L_IR_<~7.0x10^11^(L_{sun}_) with a median L_IR_ of 2.1x10^11^(L_{sun}_). We compare the physical properties of local DOGs with a control sample of galaxies that have lower S_12{mu}m_/S_0.22{mu}m_ but have similar redshift, IR luminosity, and stellar mass distributions. Both WISE 12{mu}m and GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) flux densities of DOGs differ from the control sample of galaxies, but the difference is much larger in the NUV. Among the 47 DOGs, 36%+/-7% have small axis ratios in the optical (i.e., b/a<0.6), larger than the fraction among the control sample (17%+/-3%). There is no obvious sign of interaction for many local DOGs. No local DOGs have companions with comparable optical magnitudes closer than ~50kpc. The large- and small-scale environments of DOGs are similar to the control sample. Many physical properties of local DOGs are similar to those of high-z DOGs, even though the IR luminosities of local objects are an order of magnitude lower than for the high-z objects: the presence of two classes (active galactic nuclei- and star formation-dominated) of DOGs, abnormal faintness in the UV rather than extreme brightness in the mid-IR, and diverse optical morphology. These results suggest a common underlying physical origin of local and high-z DOGs. Both seem to represent the high-end tail of the dust obscuration distribution resulting from various physical mechanisms rather than a unique phase of galaxy evolution.

- Taurus represents an ideal region to study the three-dimensional distribution of the young stellar population and relate it to the associated molecular cloud. The second Gaia data release (DR2) enables us to investigate the Taurus complex in three dimensions, starting from a previously defined robust membership. The molecular cloud structured in filaments can be traced in emission using the public far-infrared maps from Herschel. From a compiled catalog of spectroscopically confirmed members, we analyze the 283 sources with reliable parallax and proper motions in the Gaia DR2 archive. We fit the distribution of parallaxes and proper motions with multiple populations described by multivariate Gaussians. We compute the cartesian Galactic coordinates (X,Y,Z) and, for the populations associated with the main cloud, also the galactic space velocity (U,V,W). We discuss the spatial distribution of the populations in relation to the structure of the filamentary molecular cloud traced by Herschel. We discover the presence of six populations which are all well defined in parallax and proper motions, with the only exception being Taurus D. The derived distances range between ~130 and ~160pc. We do not find a unique relation between stellar population and the associated molecular cloud: while the stellar population seems to be on the cloud surface, both lying at similar distances, this is not the case when the molecular cloud is structured in filaments. Taurus B is probably moving in the direction of Taurus A, while Taurus E appears to be moving towards them. The Taurus region is the result of a complex star formation history which most probably occurred in clumpy and filamentary structures that are evolving independently.

- We have discovered 20 dwarf Cepheids (DCs) in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy from an analysis of individual CCD images obtained for a deep photometric study of the system. These short-period pulsating variable stars are by far the most distant (~100kpc) and faintest (V~23.0) DCs known. The Carina DCs obey a well-defined period-luminosity relation, allowing us to readily distinguish between overtone and fundamental pulsators in nearly every case. Unlike RR Lyrae stars, the pulsation mode turns out to be uncorrelated with light-curve shape, and the overtone pulsators do not tend toward shorter periods compared with the fundamental pulsators. Using the period-luminosity relations from Nemec, Nemec, & Lutz (1994, Cat. <J/AJ/108/222> and McNamara (1995AJ....109.1751M), we derive (m-M)_0_=20.06+/-0.12, for E(B-V)=0.025 and [Fe/H]=-2.0, in good agreement with recent, independent estimates of the distance/reddening of Carina. The error reflects the uncertainties in the DC distance scale, and in the metallicity and reddening of Carina. The frequency of DCs among upper-main-sequence stars in Carina is approximately 3%. The ratio of dwarf Cepheids to RR Lyrae stars in Carina is 0.13+/-0.10, though this result is highly sensitive to the star formation history of Carina and the evolution of the horizontal branch.

- We analyse Spitzer Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) 24um observations, and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 optical broad-band photometry and spectra, to investigate the star formation (SF) properties of galaxies residing in the Coma supercluster region. We find that SF in dwarf galaxies is quenched only in the high-density environment at the centre of clusters and groups, but that passively evolving massive galaxies are found in all environments, indicating that massive galaxies can become passive via internal processes. The SF-density relation observed for the massive galaxies is weaker relative to the dwarfs, but both show a trend for the fraction of star-forming galaxies (f_SF_) declining to ~0 in the cluster cores. We find that active galactic nucleus activity is also suppressed among massive galaxies residing in the cluster cores.
