- We present six new transits of the hot Jupiter OGLE-TR-113b observed with MagIC on the Magellan Telescopes between 2007 January and 2009 May. We update the system parameters and revise the planetary radius to R_p_=1.084+/-0.029R_J_, where the error is dominated by stellar radius uncertainties. The new transit midtimes reveal no transit timing variations from a constant ephemeris of greater than 13+/-28s over two years, placing an upper limit of 1-2M_{earth}_ on the mass of any perturber in a 1:2 or 2:1 mean-motion resonance with OGLE-TR-113b. Combining the new transit epochs with five epochs published between 2002 and 2006, we find hints that the orbital period of the planet may not be constant, with the best fit indicating a decrease of dP/dt=-60+/-15ms/yr. If real, this change in period could result from either a long-period (more than eight years) timing variation due to a massive external perturber or more intriguingly from the orbital decay of the planet. The detection of a changing period is still tentative and requires additional observations, but if confirmed it would enable direct tests of tidal stability and dynamical models of close-in planets.

- Large numbers of low-to-medium-resolution spectra of M-type dwarf stars from both the local Galactic disk and halo are available from various surveys. In order to fully exploit these data, we develop a template-fit method using a set of empirically assembled M dwarf/subdwarf classification templates, based on the measurements of the TiO and CaH molecular bands near 7000{AA}, which are used to classify M dwarfs/subdwarfs by spectral type and metallicity class. We further present a pipeline to automatically determine the effective temperature Teff, metallicity [M/H], {alpha}-element to iron abundance ratio [{alpha}/Fe], and surface gravity logg of M dwarfs/subdwarfs using the latest version of BT-Settl model atmospheres. We apply these methods to a set of low-to-medium-resolution spectra of 1544 high proper-motion ({mu}>=0.4"/yr) M dwarfs/subdwarfs, collected at the MDM observatory, Lick Observatory, Kitt-Peak National Observatory, and Cerro-Tololo Interamerican Observatory.

- We present the preliminary results of our astrometric study of stellar motions along the lines of sight of the Magellanic Clouds and the Galactic bulge. Using 5 years of MACHO project point-spread function photometry, we find that we can easily select stars with proper motions of 0.03"/yr from these very dense fields, using the characteristic shapes of their light curves. By performing astrometry on photometrically selected, candidate, high proper motion (HPM) stars in 50 deg^2^, we have discovered 154 new HPM stars from ~55 million stars monitored by the MACHO project. These new objects have proper motions as high as 0.5"/yr, brightnesses ranging from V ~13 to V~19, and V-R colors between 0.3 and 1.45.

- The HPMS3 catalog is a comprehensive list of 90455 stars south of the J2000 celestial equator that have proper motions larger than 150mas/yr. The catalog has been generated as counter-part of the I/298 LSPM-North Catalog by systematic search for high proper motion stars in the GAIA DR2 catalog (Cat. I/345) with Dec<0. The HPMS3 catalog considerably expands the number of high proper motion stars over the existing high proper motion SIMBAD objects in the southern sky by about a factor 2.5. We also provide an estimated V magnitude for all catalog entries mostly calculated from GAIA G-, B- and R-magnitudes. The catalog is estimated to be over 99% complete down to a magnitude V=20 with a gap of about 300 to 400 very high (larger than 600mas/yr) proper motion stars not covered by GAIA DR2. The catalog was cross-matched with other catalogs (2MASS, UCAC4, PS1 and GAIA DR1) and then searched for pairs with a separation of up to 60-arcseconds. 4412 such pairs were identified and assessed for common proper motion and potential gravitational relationship. These pairs were then cross-matched with the Washington Double Star catalog to identify double stars already known resulting in 1623 matches. From the rest we eliminated all pairs with potentially suspect data, especially objects with negative parallaxes or parallaxes smaller than 3 times the given Plx error. In the next steps we eliminated all pairs with parallaxes too different to allow for gravitational relationship considered to be optical even if proper motion data suggested common proper motion pairs. Finally 721 pairs remained considered to be most probably physical pairs or multiples by means of common proper motion and potential gravitational relationship. Additionally 215 pairs with slightly different proper motion data are also considered probably physical as minor differences in proper motion values are probably caused by orbits overlapping the proper motion of the double or multiple star system.

- We have applied the astrometric techniques devised by Murray (1986MNRAS.223..649M) for analysis of 48-inch Schmidt photographic data to SuperCOSMOS scans of UK Schmidt plates centred on Kapteyn's Selected Area 94 (RA=2h53m, DE=0{deg}). In this preliminary study, we combine astrometric data from four short-exposure V-band plates, taken in 1987 August (2 plates) and 1993 August (2 plates), with BVRI photometry from sky-limited plate material, to identify stars with proper motions exceeding 0.1"/yr. This paper discusses the completeness of the resulting sample and presents spectroscopy of 30 stars with {mu}>0.2"/yr. Based on the latter observations and the distribution in the [H_V_, (V-I)] reduced proper-motion diagram, we have classified stars in the complete sample as candidate white dwarfs, main-sequence dwarfs and halo subdwarfs, and derived estimates of the disc and halo luminosity functions.

- High redshift cosmic web with quasar systems

- To understand the formation, evolution, and present-day properties of the cosmic web we need to study it at low and high redshifts. We trace the cosmic web at redshifts 1.0<z<1.8 using the quasar (QSO) data from in the SDSS DR7 QSO catalogue. We apply a friend-of-friend (FoF) algorithm to the quasar and random catalogues to determine systems at a series of linking length, and analyse richness and sizes of these systems. At the linking lengths l<=30Mpc/h, the number of quasar systems is larger than the number of systems detected in random catalogues, and the systems themselves have smaller diameters than random systems. The diameters of quasar systems are comparable to the sizes of poor galaxy superclusters in the local Universe. The richest quasar systems have four members. The mean space density of quasar systems is close to the mean space density of local rich superclusters. At intermediate linking lengths (40<=l<=70Mpc/h), the richness and length of quasar systems are similar to those derived from random catalogues. Quasar system diameters are similar to the sizes of rich superclusters and supercluster chains in the local Universe. The percolating system, which penetrate the whole sample volume appears in a quasar sample at a smaller linking length than in random samples (85Mpc/h). At the linking length 70Mpc/h, the richest systems of quasars have diameters exceeding 500Mpc. Quasar luminosities in systems are not correlated with the system richness. Quasar system catalogues in our web pages and at the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center (CDS) serve as a database for searching for superclusters of galaxies and for tracing the cosmic web at high redshifts.

- We present broadband light curves of nine supernovae ranging in redshift from 0.5 to 0.8. The supernovae were discovered as part of the ESSENCE project, and the light curves are a combination of Cerro Tololo 4m and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. On the basis of spectra and/or light-curve fitting, eight of these objects are definitely Type Ia supernovae, while the classification of one is problematic. The ESSENCE project is a 5yr endeavor to discover about 200 high-redshift Type Ia supernovae, with the goal of tightly constraining the time average of the equation-of-state parameter [w=p/({rho}c^2^)] of the "dark energy." To help minimize our systematic errors, all of our ground-based photometry is obtained with the same telescope and instrument. In 2003 the highest redshift subset of ESSENCE supernovae was selected for detailed study with HST. Here we present the first photometric results of the survey.

- We use a simple optical/infrared (IR) photometric selection of high-redshift QSOs that identifies a Lyman break in the optical photometry and requires a red IR color to distinguish QSOs from common interlopers. The search yields 100 z~3 (U-dropout) QSO candidates with 19<r'<22 over 11.7deg^2^ in the ELAIS-N1 (EN1) and ELAIS-N2 (EN2) fields of the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) Legacy Survey. The z~3 selection is reliable, with spectroscopic follow-up of 10 candidates confirming that they are all QSOs at 2.83<z<3.44. We find that our z~4 (g'-dropout) sample suffers from both unreliability and incompleteness but present seven previously unidentified QSOs at 3.50<z<3.89.

- Extensive progress has recently been made in our understanding of heavy-element production via the r-process in the universe, specifically with the first observed neutron star binary merger (NSBM) event associated with the gravitational-wave signal detected by LIGO, GW170817. The chemical abundance patterns of metal-poor r-process-enhanced stars provide key evidence for the dominant site(s) of the r-process and whether NSBMs are sufficiently frequent or prolific r-process sources to be responsible for the majority of r-process material in the universe. We present atmospheric stellar parameters (using a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium analysis) and abundances from a detailed analysis of 141 metal-poor stars carried out as part of the R-Process Alliance (RPA) effort. We obtained high-resolution "snapshot" spectroscopy of the stars using the MIKE spectrograph on the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. We find 10 new highly enhanced r-II (with [Eu/Fe]>+1.0), 62 new moderately enhanced r-I (+0.3<[Eu/Fe]<~+1.0), and 17 new limited-r ([Eu/Fe]<+0.3) stars. Among those, we find 17 new carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, of which five are CEMP-no. We also identify one new s-process-enhanced ([Ba/Eu]>+0.5) and five new r/s (0.0<[Ba/Eu]<+0.5) stars. In the process, we discover a new ultra-metal-poor (UMP) star at [Fe/H]=-4.02. One of the r-II stars shows a deficit in {alpha} and Fe-peak elements, typical of dwarf galaxy stars. Our search for r-process-enhanced stars by RPA efforts has already roughly doubled the known r-process sample.

- We present images taken using the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) with the Gemini Multi-conjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) in three 2arcmin^2^ fields in the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey. These GeMS/GSAOI observations are among the first ~0.1" resolution data in the near-infrared spanning extragalactic fields exceeding 1.5' in size. We use these data to estimate galaxy sizes, obtaining results similar to those from studies with the Hubble Space Telescope, though we find a higher fraction of compact star-forming galaxies at z>2. To disentangle the star-forming galaxies from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we use multiwavelength data from surveys in the optical and infrared, including far-infrared data from Herschel, as well as new radio continuum data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and Very Large Array. We identify ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~1-3, which consist of a combination of pure starburst galaxies and AGN/starburst composites. The ULIRGs show signs of recent merger activity, such as highly disturbed morphologies and include a rare candidate triple-AGN. We find that AGNs tend to reside in hosts with smaller scale sizes than purely star-forming galaxies of similar infrared luminosity. Our observations demonstrate the potential for MCAO to complement the deeper galaxy surveys to be made with the James Webb Space Telescope.
