- Pseudo-bulges are expected to markedly differ from classical quasi-monolithically forming bulges in their star formation history (SFH) and chemical abundance patterns. To test this simple expectation, we carry out a comparative structural and spectral synthesis analysis of 10^6^ red massive galaxies issued from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), sub-divided into bulgeless, pseudo-bulge and classical bulge galaxies according to their photometric characteristics, and further obeying a specific selection to minimize uncertainties in the analysis and ensure an unbiased derivation and comparison of SFHs. Our 2D photometry analysis suggests that discs underlying pseudo-bulges typically have larger exponential scalelengths than bulgeless galaxies, despite similar integral disc luminosities. Spectral synthesis models of the stellar emission within the 3-arcsec SDSS fibre aperture reveal a clear segregation of bulgeless and pseudo-bulge galaxies from classical bulges on the luminosity-weighted planes of age-metallicity and mass-metallicity, though a large dispersion is observed within the two former classes. The secular growth of pseudo-bulges is also reflected upon their cumulative stellar mass as a function of time, which is shallower than that for classical bulges. Such results suggest that the centres of bulgeless and pseudo-bulge galaxies substantially differ from those of bulgy galaxies with respect to their SFH and chemical enrichment history, which likely points to different formation/assembly mechanisms.

- High-resolution spectra of 123 red giant stars in the globular cluster M13 and 64 red giant stars in M92 were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope. Emission and line asymmetries in H{alpha} and CaIIK are identified, characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres and seeking differences attributable to metallicity in these clusters and M15. On the red giant branch, emission in H{alpha} generally appears in stars with T_eff_<~4500K and logL/L_{sun}_>~2.75. Fainter stars showing emission are asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars or perhaps binary stars. The line-bisector for H{alpha} reveals the onset of chromospheric expansion in stars more luminous than log(L/L_{sun}_)~2.5 in all clusters, and this outflow velocity increases with stellar luminosity. However, the coolest giants in the metal-rich M13 show greatly reduced outflow in H{alpha} most probably due to decreased T_eff_ and changing atmospheric structure. The CaIIK_3_ outflow velocities are larger than shown by H{alpha} at the same luminosity and signal accelerating outflows in the chromospheres. Stars clearly on the AGB show faster chromospheric outflows in H{alpha} than RGB objects. While the H{alpha} velocities on the RGB are similar for all metallicities, the AGB stars in the metal-poor M15 and M92 have higher outflow velocities than in the metal-rich M13. Comparison of these chromospheric line profiles in the paired metal-poor clusters, M15 and M92, shows remarkable similarities in the presence of emission and dynamical signatures, and does not reveal a source of the "second-parameter" effect.

- We report new spectroscopic observations obtained with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System of 308 red giants (RGs) located in two fields near the photometric center of the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. This sample consists of 131 stars observed in previous studies (in one field) and 177 newly observed stars (in the second field) selected specifically to more reliably establish the metallicity and age distributions of the bar. For each star, we measure its heliocentric line-of-sight velocity, surface gravity, and metallicity from its high-resolution spectrum (effective temperatures come from photometric colors). The spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams- modulo small offsets in surface gravities-reveal good agreement with model isochrones. The mean metallicity of the 177-RG sample is [Fe/H]=-0.76+/-0.02 with a metallicity dispersion {sigma}=0.28+/-0.03. The corresponding metallicity distribution-corrected for selection effects-is well fitted by two Gaussian components: one metal-rich with a mean -0.66+/-0.02 and a standard deviation 0.17+/-0.01, and the other metal-poor with -1.20+/-0.24 and 0.41+/-0.06. The metal-rich and metal-poor populations contain approximately 85% and 15% of stars, respectively. We also confirm that the velocity dispersion in the bar center decreases significantly from 31.2+/-4.3 to 18.7+/-1.9km/s with increasing metallicity over the range -2.09 to -0.38. Individual stellar masses are estimated using the spectroscopic surface gravities and the known luminosities. We find that lower mass, hence older, RGs have larger metallicity dispersion and lower mean metallicity than the higher-mass, younger RGs. The estimated masses, however, extend to implausibly low values (~0.1M_{sun}_), making it impossible to obtain an absolute age-metallicity or age distribution of the bar.

- We describe updates to the redMaPPer algorithm, a photometric red-sequence cluster finder specifically designed for large photometric surveys. The updated algorithm is applied to 150deg^2^ of Science Verification (SV) data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR8 photometric data set. The DES SV catalog is locally volume limited and contains 786 clusters with richness {lambda}>20 (roughly equivalent to M_500c_>~10^14^h_70_^-1^M_{sun}_) and 0.2<z<0.9. The DR8 catalog consists of 26311 clusters with 0.08<z<0.6, with a sharply increasing richness threshold as a function of redshift for z>~0.35. The photometric redshift performance of both catalogs is shown to be excellent, with photometric redshift uncertainties controlled at the {sigma}_z_/(1+z)~0.01 level for z<~0.7 , rising to ~0.02 at z~0.9 in DES SV. We make use of Chandra and XMM X-ray and South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zeldovich data to show that the centering performance and mass-richness scatter are consistent with expectations based on prior runs of redMaPPer on SDSS data. We also show how the redMaPPer photo-z and richness estimates are relatively insensitive to imperfect star/galaxy separation and small-scale star masks.

- We have applied ClassX, an oblique decision tree classifier optimized for astronomical analysis, to the homogeneous multicolor imaging database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), training the software on subsets of SDSS objects whose nature is precisely known via spectroscopy. We find that the software, using photometric data only, correctly classifies a very large fraction of the objects with existing SDSS spectra, both stellar and extragalactic. ClassX also accurately predicts the redshifts of both normal and active galaxies in SDSS. To illustrate ClassX applications in SDSS research, we (1) derive the object content of the SDSS Data Release 2 photometric catalog and (2) provide a sample catalog of resolved SDSS objects that contains a large number of candidate active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies (27,000), along with 63,000 candidate normal galaxies at magnitudes substantially fainter than the typical magnitudes of SDSS spectroscopic objects.

- A new method is developed for estimating photometric redshifts, using realistic template Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), extending over four decades in wavelength (i.e. from 0.05{mu}m to 1mm). The template SEDs are constructed for four different spectral types of galaxies (elliptical, spiral, irregular and starburst), satisfying the following characteristics: a) they are normalised to produce the observed colours of galaxies at z~0; b) incorporate the chemo-photometric spectral evolution of galaxies of different types, in agreement with the observations; c) allow treatment of dust contribution and its evolution with redshift, consistent with the spectral evolution models; d) include absorption and re-emission of radiation by dust and hence, realistic estimates of the far-infrared radiation; e) include correction for inter-galactic absorption by Lyman continuum and Lyman forest. Using these template SEDs, the photometric redshifts are estimated to an accuracy of {Delta}z=0.11. The simultaneous and self-consistent modelling of both the photometric and chemical evolution of galaxies and the effect of dust, makes this technique particularly useful for high redshift galaxies. The effects on the estimated photometric redshifts, due to assumptions in the evolutionary population synthesis models, are investigated and discussed. Also, the degeneracy in the predicted photometric redshifts and spectral types are examined, using a simulated galaxy catalogue.

- The galaxy cluster A3667 was observed using the Two-degree Field (2dF) multifibre spectroscopic system on the Anglo-Australian Telescope in a program designed to examine the velocity structure in the region. Specifically, we sought evidence from the optical data for the putative cluster merger believed to be responsible for the observed radio and X-ray emission. We present 184 new redshifts in the region, of which 143 correspond to member galaxies of A3667. We find the cluster velocity distribution to be well modelled by a single Gaussian in agreement with previous results. In addition, new redshift-selected isodensity plots significantly reduce the prominence of the previously reported subgroup to the north-west of the main cluster. Instead, we find the galaxy distribution to be elongated and well mixed, with a high velocity dispersion and no significant evidence for substructure. These results are consistent with the axis of the proposed merger being close to the plane of the sky.

- We present photometric redshift estimates for X-ray selected sources detected in the XMM/2dF survey. 5-band photometry for 193 sources has been obtained from the SDSS. We exclude 10 sources associated with Galactic stars. The tabulated data include the optical coordinate of all sources in our sample, their photometric redshift estimate, their r-band magnitude and g-r colour as well as their morphological classification (these optical parameters have been used in the discussion of our results). Spectroscopic redshifts are available only for a sub-sample of our data and are included in Table 1 together with the survey from which they have been obtained.

- We present 865 redshifts of galaxies located in the equatorial strip -17.5 deg <= Dec. <= -2.5 deg in the right ascension range 20 h <= R.A. <= 5 h. Redshifts have been obtained for the complete sample of all 833 galaxies in the Morphological Catalog of Galaxies with magnitudes brighter than m = 14.5 (corresponding approximately to m(Zwicky) = 15.0). This sample also includes three galaxies from other sources with more reliable magnitudes, satisfying this limit, and 29 fainter galaxies, usually companions of the galaxies in the magnitude limited sample. Our maps of a very large volume of nearby space demonstrate a variety of coherent large scale structures which include large voids, 20-50 h^-1^ Mpc in diameter and large walls at least 70 h^-1^ Mpc across.
