- The low obscuration and proximity of the Carina nebula make it an ideal place to study the ongoing star formation process and impact of massive stars on low-mass stars in their surroundings. To investigate this process, we have generated a new catalogue of the pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Carina west (CrW) region and studied their nature and spatial distribution. We have also determined various parameters (reddening, reddening law, age, mass) which are further used to estimate the initial mass function (IMF) and K-band luminosity function (KLF) for the region under study. We obtained deep UBVRI H{alpha} photometric data of the field situated to the west of the main Carina nebula and centered around WR22. Medium-resolution optical spectroscopy of a subsample of X-ray selected objects along with archival data sets from Chandra, XMM-Newton and 2MASS surveys are used for the present study. Our spectroscopic results indicate that the majority of the X-ray sources are late spectral type stars. The region shows a large amount of differential reddening with minimum and maximum values of E(B-V) as 0.25 and 1.1mag, respectively. Our analysis reveals that the total to selective absorption ratio R_V_ is ~3.7+/-0.1 suggesting an abnormal grain size in the observed region. We identify 467 young stellar objects (YSOs) and study their characteristics. The ages and masses of the 241 optically identified YSOs range from ~0.1 to 10Myr and ~0.3 to 4.8M_{sun}_, respectively. However, the majority of them are younger than 1Myr and have masses below 2M_{sun}_. The high mass star WR22 does not seem to have contributed to the formation of YSOs in the CrW region. The initial mass function slope, Gamma in this region is found to be -1.13+/-0.20 in the mass range of 0.5<M/M_{sun}_<4.8. The K-band luminosity function slope ({alpha}) is also estimated as 0.31+/-0.01. We also performed minimum spanning tree analysis of the YSOs in this region which reveals that there are at least ten YSO cores associated with the molecular cloud and that leads to an average core radius and median branch length 0.43pc and 0.28pc, respectively.

- We present new multiband (UBVI) time-series data of helium burning variables in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The current sample includes 92 RR Lyrae --six of them are new identifications-- and 20 Anomalous Cepheids, one of which is new identification. The analysis of the Bailey diagram shows that the luminosity amplitude of the first overtone component in double-mode variables is located along the long-period tail of regular first overtone variables, while the fundamental component is located along the short-period tail of regular fundamental variables. This evidence further supports the transitional nature of these objects. Moreover, the distribution of Carina double-mode variables in the Petersen diagram (P_1_/P_0_ versus P_0_) is similar to metal-poor globulars (M15, M68), to the dwarf spheroidal Draco, and to the Galactic Halo. This suggests that the Carina old stellar population is metal-poor and affected by a small spread in metallicity. We use trigonometric parallaxes for five field RR Lyrae stars to provide an independent estimate of the Carina distance using the observed reddening free Period-Wesenheit [PW,(BV)] relation. Theory and observations indicate that this diagnostic is independent of metallicity. We found a true distance modulus of {mu}=20.01+/-0.02 (standard error of the mean)+/-0.05 (standard deviation) mag. We also provided independent estimates of the Carina true distance modulus using four predicted PW relations (BV, BI, VI, BVI) and we found: {mu}=(20.08+/-0.007+/-0.07)mag, {mu}=(20.06+/-0.006+/-0.06)mag, {mu}=(20.07+/-0.008+/-0.08)mag, and {mu}=(20.06+/-0.006+/-0.06)mag. Finally, we identified more than 100 new SX Phoenicis stars that together with those already known in the literature (340) make Carina a fundamental laboratory for constraining the evolutionary and pulsation properties of these transitional variables.

- The mass, origin, and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 have been intensely debated, following the claim that it hosts an ~70M_{sun}_ black hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for Galactic remnants. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of its Paschen lines, using the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope. We find that Pa{beta} and Pa{gamma} (after subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked disk profile. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the secondary, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13km/s, for different methods of profile modeling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk traces the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (a proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer part of the disk) is ~70km/s, larger than the orbital velocity of the secondary and inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4-8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the intensity ratio of the blue and red peaks has a sinusoidal behavior in phase with the secondary, which we attribute to external irradiation of the outer part of the disk. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of competing scenarios proposed for LB-1. Further astrometric Gaia data will test between alternative solutions.

- We announce the discovery of two planets orbiting the M dwarfs GJ 251 (0.360+/-0.015M_{sun}_) and HD 238090 (0.578+/-0.021M_{sun}_) based on CARMENES radial velocity (RV) data. In addition, we independently confirm with CARMENES data the existence of Lalande 21185 b, a planet that has recently been discovered with the SOPHIE spectrograph. All three planets belong to the class of warm or temperate super-Earths and share similar properties. The orbital periods are 14.24d, 13.67d, and 12.95d and the minimum masses are 4.0+/-0.4M_{sun}_, 6.9+/-0.9M_{sun}_, and 2.7+/-0.3M_{sun}_ for GJ 251 b, HD 238090 b, and Lalande 21185 b, respectively. Based on the orbital and stellar properties, we estimate equilibrium temperatures of 351.0+/-1.4K for GJ 251 b, 469.6+/-2.6K for HD 238090 b, and 370.1+/-6.8K for Lalande 21185 b. For the latter we resolve the daily aliases that were present in the SOPHIE data and that hindered an unambiguous determination of the orbital period. We find no significant signals in any of our spectral activity indicators at the planetary periods. The RV observations were accompanied by contemporaneous photometric observations. We derive stellar rotation periods of 122.1+/-2.2d and 96.7+/-3.7d for GJ 251 and HD 238090, respectively. The RV data of all three stars exhibit significant signals at the rotational period or its first harmonic. For GJ 251 and Lalande 21185, we also find long-period signals around 600d, and 2900d, respectively, which we tentatively attribute to long-term magnetic cycles. We apply a Bayesian approach to carefully model the Keplerian signals simultaneously with the stellar activity using Gaussian process regression models and extensively search for additional significant planetary signals hidden behind the stellar activity. Current planet formation theories suggest that the three systems represent a common architecture, consistent with formation following the core accretion paradigm.

- The Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) is a five-year survey being carried out at the Las Campanas Observatory to obtain high-quality light curves of ~100 low-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in a well-defined photometric system. Here we present the first release of photometric data that contains the optical light curves of 35 SNe Ia, and near-infrared light curves for a subset of 25 events. The data comprise 5559 optical (ugriBV) and 1043 near-infrared (Y JHKs) data points in the natural system of the Swope telescope. Twenty-eight SNe have pre-maximum data, and for 15 of these, the observations begin at least 5 days before B maximum. This is one of the most accurate data sets of low-redshift SNe Ia published to date. When completed, the CSP data set will constitute a fundamental reference for precise determinations of cosmological parameters, and serve as a rich resource for comparison with models of SNe Ia.

- Following the first discovery of a planet orbiting a giant star in 2002, we started the CORALIE radial-velocity search for companions around evolved stars (CASCADES). We present the observations of three stars conducted at the 1.2m Leonard Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile, using the CORALIE spectrograph. We aim to detect planetary companions to intermediate-mass G- and K- type evolved stars and perform a statistical analysis of this population. We searched for new planetary systems around the stars HD22532 (TIC200851704), HD64121 (TIC264770836), and HD69123 (TIC146264536). We have followed a volume-limited sample of 641 red giants since 2006 to obtain high-precision radial-velocity measurements. We used the Data & Analysis Center for Exoplanets (DACE) platform to perform a radial-velocity analysis to search for periodic signals in the line profile and activity indices, to distinguish between planetary-induced radial-velocity variations and stellar photospheric jitter, and to search for significant signals in the radial-velocity time series to fit a corresponding Keplerian model. In this paper, we present the survey in detail, and we report on the discovery of the first three planets of the sample around the giant stars HD22532, HD64121, and HD69123.

- Big data in the form of stellar spectra from the spectroscopic survey associated with the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) are important for studying properties of cataclysmic variables (CVs). By cross matching the catalogs of CVs compiled with LAMOST DR3, acquired from October 2011 to July 2015, we obtained the first spectroscopic catalog for CVs observed by LAMOST with high signal to noise ratio, above 8. By integrating line profiles, their equivalent widths (EWs) of the H{alpha}, H{beta}, H{gamma} and H{delta}, as well as HeI 5876 and 6678{AA} lines, were calculated. There were 74 stellar spectra from 48 known CVs and three spectra from three new CV candidates. At the same time, we also collected their previously published EWs. Thirty-three objects had repeated spectra and 30 stars showed spectral variability in the H{alpha} line. Moreover, we carried out photometric follow-up studies for five CVs (UU Aqr, TT Tri, PX And, BP Lyn and RW Tri). We obtained nine new light curves and revised their linear ephemerides. For RW Tri, there is a possible oscillation with an amplitude of 0.0031(2) days and a period of 47.6+/-0.4 years, which might be caused by a third body (brown dwarf) or magnetic activity cycle.

- The 28 cataclysmic variables (CVs) found in 2005 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are presented with their coordinates, magnitudes, and spectra. Five of these systems are previously known CVs (HH Cnc, SX LMi, QZ Ser, AP CrB, and HS 1016+3412), and the rest are new discoveries. Additional spectroscopic, photometric, and/or polarimetric observations of 10 systems were carried out, resulting in estimates of the orbital periods for seven of the new binaries. The 23 new CVs include one eclipsing system, one new Polar, and five systems whose spectra clearly reveal atmospheric absorption lines from the underlying white dwarf.

- Using selection criteria based on amplitude, time, and color, we have identified 329 objects as known or candidate cataclysmic variables (CVs) during the first year of testing and operation of the Zwicky Transient Facility. Of these, 90 are previously confirmed CVs, 218 are strong candidates based on the shape and color of their light curves obtained during 3-562days of observation, and the remaining 21 are possible CVs but with too few data points to be listed as good candidates. Almost half of the strong candidates are within 10{deg} of the galactic plane, in contrast to most other large surveys that have avoided crowded fields. The available Gaia parallaxes are consistent with sampling the low mass transfer CVs, as predicted by population models. Our follow-up spectra have confirmed Balmer/helium emission lines in 27 objects, with four showing high-excitation HeII emission, including candidates for an AM CVn, a polar, and an intermediate polar. Our results demonstrate that a complete survey of the Galactic plane is needed to accomplish an accurate determination of the number of CVs existing in the Milky Way.
