- Description:
- We present first results from an unbiased 50deg^2^ submillimeter Galactic survey at 250, 350, and 500um from the 2006 flight of the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope. The map has resolution ranging from 36" to 60" in the three submillimeter bands spanning the thermal emission peak of cold starless cores. We determine the temperature, luminosity, and mass of more than 1000 compact sources in a range of evolutionary stages and an unbiased statistical characterization of the population. From comparison with C^18^O data, we find the dust opacity per gas mass, {kappa}r=0.16cm^2^/g at 250um, for cold clumps. We find that 2% of the mass of the molecular gas over this diverse region is in cores colder than 14K, and that the mass function for these cold cores is consistent with a power law with index {alpha}=-3.22+/-0.14 over the mass range 14M_{sun}_<M<80M_{sun}_.

- Description:
- We report the identification of blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds. The objects were selected from the Magellanic Quasars Survey (MQS), which targeted the entire Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 70% of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the 758 MQS quasars and 898 of the unidentified (featureless spectra) objects, we identified a sample of 44 blazar candidates, including 27 flat-spectrum radio quasars and 17 BL Lacertae objects, respectively. All the blazar candidates from our sample were identified with respect to their radio, optical, and midinfrared properties. The newly selected blazar candidates possess the long-term, multicolor photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, multicolor midinfrared observations, and archival radio data for one frequency at least. In addition, for nine of them, the radio polarization data are available. With such data, these objects can be used to study the physics behind the blazar variability detected in the optical and midinfrared bands, as a tool to investigate magnetic field geometry of the LMC and SMC, and as an exemplary sample of point-like sources most likely detectable in the {gamma}-ray range with the newly emerging Cherenkov Telescope Array.

- Blue early-type galaxies in Galaxy Zoo
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/396/818
- Date:

- Description:
- We report the discovery of a population of nearby, blue early-type galaxies with high star formation rates (0.5<SFR<50M_{sun}_/yr). They are identified by their visual morphology as provided by Galaxy Zoo for Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 and their u-r colour. We select a volume-limited sample in the redshift range 0.02<z<0.05, corresponding to luminosities of approximately L* and above and with u-r colours significantly bluer than the red sequence. We confirm the early-type morphology of the objects in this sample and investigate their environmental dependence and star formation properties.

- Description:
- This paper is the second in a series describing the southern Galactic Disk Survey (GDS) performed at the Universitatssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile. Haas et al. (2012, Cat. J/AN/333/706, Paper I) presented the survey design and the characteristics of the observations and data. They identified ~2200 variable stars in an area of 50 square degrees with more than 50 observations in 2011. Here we present the first complete version of the GDS covering all 268 fields with 1323 square degrees along the Galactic disk including revised data from Paper I. The individual fields were observed up to 272 times and comprise a maximum time span between September 2010 and May 2015. We detect a total of 64151 variable sources, which are presented in a catalog including some of their properties and their light curves. A comparison with the International Variable Star Index (VSX) and All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) indicates that 56794 of these sources are previously unknown variables. Furthermore, we present U, B, V, r', i', z' photometry for all sources within the GDS, resulting in a new multi-color catalog of nearly 16x10^6^ sources detected in at least one filter. Both the GDS and the near-infrared VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV) complement each other in the overlap area of about 300 square degrees enabling future comparison studies.

- Bochum survey of the southern Galactic disk

- Description:
- We are monitoring a 6{deg} wide stripe along the southern Galactic disk simultaneously in the r and i bands, using a robotic 15-cm twin telescope of the Universitatsternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile. Utilising the telescope's 2.7{deg} field of view, the survey aims at observing a mosaic of 268 fields once per month and to monitor dedicated fields once per night. The survey reaches a sensitivity from 10m down to 18m (AB system), with a completeness limit of r~15.5m and i~14.5m which - due to the instrumental pixel size of 2.4" - refers to stars separated by >3". This brightness range is ideally suited to examine the intermediately bright stellar population supposed to be saturated in deep variability surveys with large telescopes. To connect to deep surveys or to explore faint long term variables, coadded images of several nights reach a depth of ~20m. The astrometric accuracy is better than 1", as determined from the overlap of neighbouring fields. We describe the survey design, the data properties and our procedures to derive the light curves and to extract variable stars. We present a list of ~2200 variable stars identified in 50 square degrees with 50-80 observations between May and October 2011. For bright stars the variability amplitude A reaches down to A~0.05m, while at the faint end variations of A>1m are detected. About 200 stars were known to be variable, and their amplitudes and periods - as far as determinable from our six month monitoring - agree with literature values, demonstrating the performance of the Bochum Galactic Disk Survey.

- BOSS: quasar luminosity function
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/773/14
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a new measurement of the optical quasar luminosity function (QLF), using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III: Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-III: BOSS). From the SDSS-III Data Release Nine, a uniform sample of 22301 i<~21.8 quasars are selected over an area of 2236deg^2^, with confirmed spectroscopic redshifts between 2.2<z<3.5, filling in a key part of the luminosity-redshift plane for optical quasar studies. The completeness of the survey is derived through simulated quasar photometry, and this completeness estimate is checked using a sample of quasars selected by their photometric variability within the BOSS footprint. We investigate the level of systematics associated with our quasar sample using the simulations, in the process generating color-redshift relations and a new quasar K-correction. We probe the faint end of the QLF to M_i_(z=2.2){approx}-24.5 and see a clear break in the QLF at all redshifts up to z=3.5. A log-linear relation (in log{Phi}*-M*) for a luminosity evolution and density evolution model is found to adequately describe our data within the range 2.2<z<3.5; across this interval the break luminosity increases by a factor of ~2.6 while {Phi}* declines by a factor of ~8. At z<~2.2 our data are reasonably well fit by a pure luminosity evolution model, and only a weak signature of "AGN downsizing" is seen, in line with recent studies of the hard X-ray luminosity function. We compare our measured QLF to a number of theoretical models and find that models making a variety of assumptions about quasar triggering and halo occupation can fit our data over a wide range of redshifts and luminosities.

- Brightest high-z galaxies in RELICS clusters
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/889/189
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Massive foreground galaxy clusters magnify and distort the light of objects behind them, permitting a view into both the extremely distant and intrinsically faint galaxy populations. We present here the z~6-8 candidate high-redshift galaxies from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), a Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope survey of 41 massive galaxy clusters spanning an area of ~200arcmin^2^. These clusters were selected to be excellent lenses, and we find similar high-redshift sample sizes and magnitude distributions as the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). We discover 257, 57, and eight candidate galaxies at z~6, 7, and 8 respectively, (322 in total). The observed (lensed) magnitudes of the z~6 candidates are as bright as AB mag ~23, making them among the brightest known at these redshifts, comparable with discoveries from much wider, blank-field surveys. RELICS demonstrates the efficiency of using strong gravitational lenses to produce high-redshift samples in the epoch of reionization. These brightly observed galaxies are excellent targets for follow-up study with current and future observatories, including the James Webb Space Telescope.

- Bright metal-poor stars from HES Survey. II.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/835/81
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9<B<14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel+ (2006, J/ApJ/652/1585; Paper I) analysis of these stars was able to derive estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] only for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of T_eff_, logg, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire data set. This sample is very local-about 90% of the stars are located within 0.5kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman and MacConnell "weak metal" candidates by Beers+ (2014, J/ApJ/794/58). We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the halo stream of stars suggested by Helmi+ (1999Natur.402...53H) and Chiba & Beers (2000AJ....119.2843C), as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. We also identify a relatively large number of CEMP stars with kinematics consistent with the metal-weak thick-disk population, with possible implications for its origin.
