- Description:
- Exoplanet properties crucially depend on the parameters of their host stars: more accurate stellar parameters yield more accurate exoplanet characteristics. When the exoplanet host star shows pulsations, asteroseismology can be used for an improved description of the stellar parameters. We aim to revisit the pulsational properties of {beta} Pic and identify its pulsation modes from normalized amplitudes in five different passbands. We also investigate the potential presence of a magnetic field. We conducted a frequency analysis using three seasons of BRITE-Constellation observations in the two BRITE filters, the about 620-day-long bRing light curve, and the nearly 8-year-long SMEI photometric time series. We calculated normalized amplitudes using all passbands and including previously published values obtained from ASTEP observations. We investigated the magnetic properties of {beta} Pic using spectropolarimetric observations conducted with the HARPSpol instrument. Using 2D rotating models, we fit the normalized amplitudes and frequencies through Monte Carlo Markov chains. We identify 15 pulsation frequencies in the range from 34 to 55d^-1^, where two, F13 at 53.6917d^-1^ and F11 at 50.4921d^-1^, display clear amplitude variability. We use the normalized amplitudes in up to five passbands to identify the modes as three l=1, six l=2, and six l=3 modes. {beta} Pic is shown to be non-magnetic with an upper limit of the possible undetected dipolar field of 300 Gauss. Multiple fits to the frequencies and normalized amplitudes are obtained, including one with a near equator-on inclination for {beta} Pic, which corresponds to our expectations based on the orbital inclination of {beta} Pic b and the orientation of the circumstellar disk. This solution leads to a rotation rate of 27% of the Keplerian breakup velocity, a radius of 1.497+/-0.025R_{sun}_, and a mass of 1.797+/-0.035M_{sun}_. The ~2% errors in radius and mass do not account for uncertainties in the models and a potentially erroneous mode-identification.

- beta Pictoris photometry

- Description:
- Photometric monitoring of beta Pictoris in 1981 showed anomalous fluctuations of up to 4% over several days, consistent with foreground material transiting the stellar disk. The subsequent discovery of the gas giant planet beta Pictoris b and the predicted transit of its Hill sphere to within 0.1 au projected distance of the planet provided an opportunity to search for the transit of a circumplanetary disk in this 21+/-4Myr-old planetary system. Continuous broadband photometric monitoring of beta Pictoris requires ground- based observatories at multiple longitudes to provide redundancy and to provide triggers for rapid spectroscopic followup. These observatories include the dedicated beta Pictoris monitoring observatory bRing at Sutherland and Siding Springs, the ASTEP400 telescope at Concordia, and observations from the space observatories BRITE and Hubble Space Telescope. We search the combined light curves for evidence of short period transient events caused by rings and for longer term photometric variability due to diffuse circumplanetary material. We find no photometric event that matches with the event seen in November 1981, and there is no systematic photometric dimming of the star as a function of the Hill sphere radius. We conclude that the 1981 event was not caused by the transit of a circumplanetary disk around beta Pictoris b. The upper limit on the long term variability of beta Pictoris places an upper limit of 1.8x10^22^g of dust within the Hill sphere. Circumplanetary material is either condensed into a non-transiting disk, is condensed into a disk with moons that has a small obliquity, or is below our detection threshold. This is the first time that a dedicated international campaign has mapped the Hill sphere transit of a gas giant extrasolar planet at 10 au.

- BI light curves of DDO210 pulsating variables
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/455/2163
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have probed the pulsating variable star content of the isolated Local Group dwarf galaxy, DDO210 (Aquarius), using archival Advanced Camera for Surveys/Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the F475W and F814W passbands. We find a total of 32 RR Lyrae stars (24 ab-type; 8 c-type) and 75 Cepheid variables. The mean periods of the ab-type and c-type RR Lyrae stars are calculated to be <Pab>=0.609+/-0.011 and <Pc>=0.359+/-0.025d, respectively. The light-curve properties of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars yield a mean metallicity of <[Fe/H]>=-1.63+/-0.11dex for this ancient population, consistent with a recent synthetic colour-magnitude diagram analysis. We find this galaxy to be Oosterhoff-intermediate and lacking in high-amplitude, short-period ab-type RR Lyrae, consistent with behaviour recently observed for many dwarf spheroidals and ultrafaint dwarfs in the Local Group. We find a distance modulus of {mu}=25.07+/-0.12 as determined by the RR Lyrae stars, slightly larger but agreeing with recent distance estimates from the red giant branch tip. We also find a sizable population of Cepheid variables in this galaxy. We provide evidence in favour of most if not all of these stars being short-period classical Cepheids. Assuming all of these stars to be classical Cepheids, we find that most of these Cepheids are ~ 300 Myr old, with the youngest Cepheids being offset from the older Cepheids and the centre of the galaxy. We conclude that this may have resulted from a migration of star formation in DDO210.

- BI light curves of NGC 2506 variables

- Description:
- We have obtained photometric time-series observations of stars in the open cluster NGC 2506, in order to study pulsating blue stragglers and eclipsing binaries. The data were obtained during a bi-site campaign in early 2005 which involved the Danish 1.54-m telescope at ESO, La Silla, and the Flemish Mercator telescope at La Palma, Spain. Based on these data we increased the number of known variables in NGC 2506 from 5 to 28 through the detection of 3 new pulsating blue stragglers, 15 gamma Doradus stars and 4 new eclipsing binaries, while one variable is of unknown type. We derived orbital periods for two previously known binaries, we performed a tentative mode-identification of the pulsating blue stragglers, and compared B- and I amplitude ratios and phase differences for the gamma Doradus stars to seismic models.

- Description:
- Current models predict that binary interactions are a major ingredient in the formation of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) and pre-planetary nebulae (PPNe). Despite years of radial velocity (RV) monitoring, the paucity of known binaries amongst the latter systems means data are insufficient to examine this relationship in detail. In this work, we report on the discovery of a long-period (P=2654+/-124d) binary at the centre of the Galactic bipolar PPN IRAS 08005-2356 (V510 Pup), determined from long-term spectroscopic and near-infrared time-series data. The spectroscopic orbit is fitted with an eccentricity of 0.36+/-0.05, which is similar to that of other long-period post-AGB binaries. Time-resolved H{alpha} profiles reveal high-velocity outflows (jets) with deprojected velocities up to 231^+31^_-27_km/s seen at phases when the luminous primary is behind the jet. The outflow traced by H{alpha} is likely produced via accretion on to a main-sequence companion, for which we calculate a mass of 0.63+/-0.13M_{sun}_. This discovery is one of the first cases of a confirmed binary PPN and demonstrates the importance of high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring surveys using large telescopes in revealing binarity among these systems.

- Blazhko effect from 4yr of Kepler data
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/213/31
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In order to benefit from the four year unprecedented precision of the Kepler data, we extracted light curves from the pixel photometric data of the Kepler space telescope for 15 Blazhko RR Lyrae stars. To collect all the flux from a given target as accurately as possible, we defined tailor-made apertures for each star and quarter. In some cases, the aperture finding process yielded sub-optimal results, because some flux have been lost even if the aperture contains all available pixels around the star. This fact stresses the importance of those methods that rely on the whole light curve instead of focusing on the extrema (O-C diagrams and other amplitude independent methods). We carried out detailed Fourier analysis of the light curves and the amplitude independent O-C diagram. We found 12 (80%) multiperiodically modulated stars in our sample. This ratio is much higher than previously found. Resonant coupling between radial modes, a recent theory for explaining the Blazhko effect, allows single, multiperiodic, or even chaotic modulations. Among the stars with two modulations, we found three stars (V355 Lyr, V366 Lyr, and V450 Lyr) where one of the periods dominates in amplitude modulation, but the other period has a larger frequency modulation amplitude. The ratio between the primary and secondary modulation periods is almost always very close to the ratios of small integer numbers. It may indicate the effect of undiscovered resonances. Furthermore, we detected the excitation of the second radial overtone mode f_2_ for three stars where this feature was formerly unknown. Our data set comprises the longest continuous, most precise observations of Blazhko RR Lyrae stars ever published. These data are made publicly available and will be unrivaled for years to come.

- Blue stragglers and variable stars in M3
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/108/1786
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- This paper describes Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Planetary Camera-I images of the core of the dense globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272). Stellar photometry in the F555W (V) and F785LP (I) bands, with a 1 sigma photometric accuracy of about 0.1mag, has been used to construct color-magnitude diagrams of about 4700 stars above the main-sequence turnoff within r<~1' of the cluster center. We have also analyzed archival HST F336W (U) images of M3 obtained by the Wide Field/Planetary Camera-I Instrument Definition Team. The UVI data are used to identify 28 blue straggler (BS) stars within the central 0.29arcmin^2. The specific frequency of BSs in this region of M3, N(BS)/N(V<V(HB)+2)=0.094+/-0.019, is about a factor of 2-3 higher than that found by Bolte et al. [1993, ApJ, 408, L89] in a recent ground-based study of the same region, but comparable to that seen in the sparse outer parts of the same cluster and in HST observations of the core of the higher density cluster 47 Tuc. The BSs in M3 are slightly more centrally concentrated than red giant branch stars while horizontal branch stars are somewhat less concentrated than red giants. The radial distribution of V-selected subgiant and turnoff stars is well fit by a King model with a core radius r(core)=28"+/-2" (90% confidence limits), which corresponds to 1.4pc. Red giant and horizontal branch stars selected in the ultraviolet data (U<18) have a somewhat more compact distribution (r(core)=22.5"). The HST U data consist of 17 exposures acquired over a span of three days. We have used these data to isolate 40 variable stars for which relative astrometry, brightnesses, colors, and light curves are presented. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicates that, typically, the variability for each star is significant at the 95% level. We identify two variable BS candidates (probably of the SX Phe type) out of a sample of ~25 BSs in which variability could have been detected. Most of the variables are RR Lyrae stars on the horizontal branch. All of them have periods P>~8h.

- Bochum survey of the southern Galactic disk
- Short Name:

- Description:
- We are monitoring a 6{deg} wide stripe along the southern Galactic disk simultaneously in the r and i bands, using a robotic 15-cm twin telescope of the Universitatsternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile. Utilising the telescope's 2.7{deg} field of view, the survey aims at observing a mosaic of 268 fields once per month and to monitor dedicated fields once per night. The survey reaches a sensitivity from 10m down to 18m (AB system), with a completeness limit of r~15.5m and i~14.5m which - due to the instrumental pixel size of 2.4" - refers to stars separated by >3". This brightness range is ideally suited to examine the intermediately bright stellar population supposed to be saturated in deep variability surveys with large telescopes. To connect to deep surveys or to explore faint long term variables, coadded images of several nights reach a depth of ~20m. The astrometric accuracy is better than 1", as determined from the overlap of neighbouring fields. We describe the survey design, the data properties and our procedures to derive the light curves and to extract variable stars. We present a list of ~2200 variable stars identified in 50 square degrees with 50-80 observations between May and October 2011. For bright stars the variability amplitude A reaches down to A~0.05m, while at the faint end variations of A>1m are detected. About 200 stars were known to be variable, and their amplitudes and periods - as far as determinable from our six month monitoring - agree with literature values, demonstrating the performance of the Bochum Galactic Disk Survey.

- Bolometric flux estimation for cool evolved stars
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/152/16
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Estimation of bolometric fluxes (F_BOL_) is an essential component of stellar effective temperature determination with optical and near-infrared interferometry. Reliable estimation of F_BOL_ simply from broadband K-band photometry data is a useful tool in those cases were contemporaneous and/or wide-range photometry is unavailable for a detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) fit, as was demonstrated in Dyck et al. Recalibrating the intrinsic F_BOL_ versus observed F_2.2{mu}m_ relationship of that study with modern SED fitting routines, which incorporate the significantly non-blackbody, empirical spectral templates of the INGS spectral library (an update of the library in Pickles) and estimation of reddening, serves to greatly improve the accuracy and observational utility of this relationship. We find that F_BOL_ values predicted are roughly 11% less than the corresponding values predicted in Dyck et al., indicating the effects of SED absorption features across bolometric flux curves.
