- We present a technique that applies spectral synthesis to medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS; R~6000) in the red (6300{AA}<{lambda}<9100{AA}) to measure [Fe/H] and [{alpha}/Fe] of individual red giant stars over a wide metallicity range. We apply our technique to 264 red giant stars in seven Galactic globular clusters and demonstrate that it reproduces the metallicities and {alpha}-enhancements derived from high-resolution spectroscopy (HRS). The MRS technique excludes the three CaII triplet lines and instead relies on a plethora of weaker lines. Unlike empirical metallicity estimators, such as the equivalent width of the CaII triplet, the synthetic method presented here is applicable over an arbitrarily wide metallicity range and is independent of assumptions about the {alpha}-enhancement.

- We present a catalog of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 2961 stars in eight dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW): Sculptor, Fornax, Leo I, Sextans, Leo II, Canes Venatici I, Ursa Minor, and Draco. For the purposes of validating our measurements, we also observed 445 red giants in MW globular clusters and 21 field red giants in the MW halo. The measurements are based on Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) combined with spectral synthesis. We estimate uncertainties in [Fe/H] by quantifying the dispersion of [Fe/H] measurements in a sample of stars in monometallic globular clusters (GCs). We estimate uncertainties in Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances by comparing to high-resolution spectroscopic abundances of the same stars. For this purpose, a sample of 132 stars with published high-resolution spectroscopy in GCs, the MW halo field, and dwarf galaxies has been observed with MRS. The standard deviations of the differences in [Fe/H] and <[{alpha}/Fe]> (the average of [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe]) between the two samples is 0.15 and 0.16, respectively.

- The chemical abundances of large samples of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars can be used to investigate metal-free stellar populations, supernovae, and nucleosynthesis as well as the formation and galactic chemical evolution of the Milky Way and its progenitor halos. However, current progress on the study of EMP stars is being limited by their faint apparent magnitudes. The acquisition of high signal-to-noise spectra for faint EMP stars requires a major telescope time commitment, making the construction of large samples of EMP star abundances prohibitively expensive. We have developed a new, efficient selection that uses only public, all-sky APASS optical, 2MASS near-infrared, and WISE mid-infrared photometry to identify bright metal-poor star candidates through their lack of molecular absorption near 4.6 microns.

- Building upon earlier observations that demonstrate substantial star-to-star differences in the carbon abundances of M13 subgiants, we present new Keck LRIS spectra reaching more that 1.5mag below the M13 main-sequence turnoff (to V~20). Our analysis reveals a distribution of C abundances similar to that found among the subgiants, implying little change in the compositions of the M13 stars at least through the main-sequence turnoff. We presume these differences to be the result of some process operating early in the cluster history. Additional spectra of previously studied bright M13 giants have been obtained with the 5m Hale Telescope.

- We have studied 23 long-lived G dwarfs that belong to the thin disk and thick disk stellar populations. The stellar data and analyses are identical, reducing the chances for systematic errors in the comparisons of the chemical abundance patterns in the two populations. Abundances have been derived for 24 elements: O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, and Eu.

- We present the first measure of Fe and Na abundances in NGC 6362, a low-mass globular cluster (GC) where first- and second-generation stars are fully spatially mixed. A total of 160 member stars (along the red giant branch (RGB) and the red horizontal branch (RHB)) were observed with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. We find that the cluster has an iron abundance of [Fe/H]=-1.09+/-0.01dex, without evidence of intrinsic dispersion. On the other hand, the [Na/Fe] distribution turns out to be intrinsically broad and bimodal. The Na-poor and Na-rich stars populate, respectively, the bluest and the reddest RGBs detected in the color-magnitude diagrams including the U filter. The RGB is composed of a mixture of first- and second-generation stars in a similar proportion, while almost all the RHB stars belong to the first cluster generation. To date, NGC 6362 is the least massive GC where both the photometric and spectroscopic signatures of multiple populations have been detected.

- Following the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) observation, we have studied the chemical composition of the hot plasma in a sample of 146 X-ray-bright pre-main-sequence stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We report measurements of individual element abundances for a subsample of 86 slightly absorbed and bright X-ray sources, using low-resolution X-ray spectra obtained from the Chandra ACIS instrument.

- We present abundances of several light, {alpha}, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements for 66 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega} Cen). Our observations lie in the range 12.0<V<13.5 and focus on the intermediate and metal-rich RGBs. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R~18000) spectra obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. Combining these data with previous work, we find that there are at least four peaks in the metallicity distribution function at [Fe/H]=-1.75, -1.45, -1.05, and -0.75, which correspond to about 55%, 30%, 10%, and 5% of our sample, respectively. We conclude that the metal-rich population must be at least 1-2Gyr younger than the metal-poor stars, owing to the long timescales needed for strong s-process enrichment and the development of a large contingent of mass transfer binaries.

- We present radial velocities and Fe and Al abundances for 180 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega} Cen). The majority of our data lie in the range 11.0<V<13.5, which covers the RGB from about 1mag above the horizontal branch to the RGB tip. The selection procedures are biased toward preferentially observing the more metal-poor and luminous stars of {omega} Cen. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution spectra (R~13000) obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. Our results are in agreement with previous studies as we find at least four different metallicity populations with [Fe/H]=-1.75, -1.45, -1.05, and -0.75, with a full range of -2.20<~[Fe/H]<~-0.70. Results seem to fit in the adopted scheme that star formation occurred in {omega} Cen over >1Gyr.

- We present radial velocities and chemical abundance ratios of [Fe/H], [O/Fe], [Si/Fe], and [Ca/Fe] for 264 red giant branch stars in three Galactic bulge off-axis fields located near (l,b)=(-5.5,-7), (-4,-9), and (+8.5,+9). The results are based on equivalent width and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R{approx}18000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N~75-300pixel^-1^) spectra obtained with the Hydra spectrographs on the Blanco 4m and WIYN 3.5m telescopes. The targets were selected from the blue side of the giant branch to avoid cool stars that would be strongly affected by CN and TiO; however, a comparison of the color-metallicity distribution in literature samples suggests that our selection of bluer targets should not present a significant bias against metal-rich stars.
