- Description:
- Ultra-hot Jupiters offer interesting prospects for expanding our theories on dynamical evolution and the properties of extremely irradiated atmospheres. In this context, we present the analysis of new optical spectroscopy for the transiting ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b. We first refine the orbital properties of WASP-121b, which is on a nearly polar (obliquity Psi^North^=88.1+/-0.25{deg} or Psi^South^=91.11+/-0.20{deg}) orbit, and exclude a high differential rotation for its fast-rotating (P<1.13-days), highly inclined (i*^North_=8.1^+3.0^_-2.6_{deg} or i*_South_=171.9^+2.5^_-3.4_{deg}) star. We then present a new method that exploits the reloaded Rossiter-McLaughlin technique to separate the contribution of the planetary atmosphere and of the spectrum of the stellar surface along the transit chord. Its application to HARPS transit spectroscopy of WASP-121b reveals the absorption signature from metals, likely atomic iron, in the planet atmospheric limb. The width of the signal (14.3+/-1.2km/s) can be explained by the rotation of the tidally locked planet. Its blueshift (-5.2+/-0.5km/s) could trace strong winds from the dayside to the nightside, or the anisotropic expansion of the planetary thermosphere.

- Ultra-steep-spectrum radio sources
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/123/637
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present optical and/or near-IR images of 128 ultra-steep-spectrum radio sources. Roughly half of the objects are identified in the optical images (R<~24), while in the near-IR images, more than 94% are detected at K<~22. The mean K magnitude is 19.26 within a 2" diameter aperture. The distribution of R-K colors indicates that at least one-third of the objects observed have very red colors (R-K>5). The major axes of the identifications in the K band are preferentially oriented along the radio axes, with half of them having compact morphologies. The 22 sources with spectroscopic redshifts and K-band magnitudes follow the K-z relation found from previous radio samples, but with a larger scatter.

- Description:
- We present the results of radio (VLA) and optical (ESO/La Silla) imaging of a sample of 52 radio sources having an ultra-steep radio spectrum with {alpha} mostly steeper than -1.1 at decimetre wavelengths (median {alpha}=-1.22). Radio-optical overlays are presented to an astrometric accuracy of ~1". For 41 of the sources, radio spectral indices are newly determined using unpublished observations made with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope. For 14 of the sources identified with relatively brighter optical counterparts, spectroscopic observations were also carried out at La Silla and their redshifts are found to lie in the range 0.4 to 2.6.

- Description:
- We present a sample of spectroscopically confirmed quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) with FUV-NUV color (as measured by Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) photometry, FUV band: 1344-1786{AA}, NUV band: 1771-2831{AA}) bluer than canonical QSO templates and than the majority of known QSOs. We analyze their FUV to NIR colors, luminosities, and optical spectra. The sample includes a group of 150 objects at low redshift (z<0.5), and a group of 21 objects with redshift 1.7<z<2.6.

- Ultraviolet survey of M31 with UVIT on AstroSat
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/247/47
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- An ultraviolet survey of M31 has been carried out during 2017-19 with the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) instrument on board the AstroSat Observatory. Here we analyze far- and near-ultraviolet (FUV and NUV) observations from the M31 UVIT survey, which covers a sky area of ~3{deg}x1{deg} with spatial resolution of ~1". The observations included six filter bands in the wavelength range of 120-280nm. The limiting magnitude (AB) in the FUV band (CaF2 filter), which has the largest number of detected sources, is ~23. The primary product of this work is the M31 UVIT point-source catalog containing positions and photometry. In total ~75000 sources were detected at FUV or NUV wavelengths.

- ULXs with multiepoch Spitzer/IRAC obs.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/878/71
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a mid-infrared (IR) sample study of nearby ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) using multiepoch observations with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Spitzer/IRAC observations taken after 2014 were obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Intensive Transients Survey. Our sample includes 96 ULXs located within 10 Mpc. Of the 96 ULXs, 12 have candidate counterparts consistent with absolute mid-IR magnitudes of supergiants, and 16 counterparts exceeded the mid-IR brightness of single supergiants and are thus more consistent with star clusters or non-ULX background active galactic nuclei. The supergiant candidate counterparts exhibit a bimodal color distribution in a Spitzer/IRAC color-magnitude diagram, where "red" and "'blue" ULXs fall in IRAC colors [3.6]-[4.5]~0.7 and [3.6]-[4.5]~0.0, respectively. The mid-IR colors and absolute magnitudes of four "red" and five "blue" ULXs are consistent with those of supergiant B[e] (sgB[e]) and red supergiant (RSG) stars, respectively. Although "blue," RSG-like mid-IR ULX counterparts likely host RSG mass donors; we propose that "red" counterparts are ULXs exhibiting the "B[e] phenomenon" rather than hosts of sgB[e] mass donors. We show that the mid-IR excess from the "red" ULXs is likely due to thermal emission from circumstellar or circumbinary dust. Using dust as a probe for total mass, we estimate mass-loss rates of dM/dt~1x10^-4^M_{sun}_/yr in dust-forming outflows of red ULXs. Based on the transient mid-IR behavior and its relatively flat spectral index, {alpha}=-0.19+/-0.1, we suggest that the mid-IR emission from Holmberg IX X-1 originates from a variable jet.

- 84 UMa ubvy photometry

- Description:
- We present new longitudinal magnetic field and Stroemgren photometric measurements of the Bp star 84 UMa. From these data we determine a new rotational period P_rot_=1.38576+/-0.00080d, which is inconsistent with previously published values. The magnetic measurements indicate the presence of a weak, dominantly dipolar magnetic field in the photosphere of 84 UMa. We employ a new value of the rotational axis inclination in conjunction with the magnetic data in order to constrain the magnetic field geometry. We derive the following dipole oblique rotator parameters: i=59^+17^_-9_{deg}, {beta}=48^+17^_-29_{deg}, and B_d_=1620^+1270^_-30_G. A precise value of the radius (which we calculate in conjunction with the inclination using the Hipparcos parallax) allows us to locate 84 UMa on the radius-effective temperature plane. Using theoretical evolutionary tracks (Schaller et al., 1992, Cat. <J/A+AS/96/269>), we obtain values for the mass, age and surface gravity. These results place 84 UMa quite close to the ZAMS, a result inconsistent with the suggestion by Hubrig & Mathys (1994AN....315..343H) that the magnetic Ap stars may be near the end of their main sequence life.

- 8um Cores in NGC 891, NGC 3628 and IC 5052
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/895/71
- Date:
- 11 Mar 2022
- Publisher:

- Description:
- To study the vertical distribution of the earliest stages of star formation in galaxies, three edge-on spirals, NGC891, NGC3628, and IC5052, observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) were examined for compact 8{mu}m cores using an unsharp mask technique; 173, 267, and 60 cores were distinguished, respectively. Color-color distributions suggest a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and highly extincted photospheric emission from young stars. The average V-band extinction is ~20mag, equally divided between foreground and core. IRAC magnitudes for the clumps are converted to stellar masses assuming an age of 1Myr, which is about equal to the ratio of the total core mass to the star formation rate in each galaxy. The extinction and stellar mass suggest an intrinsic core radius of ~18pc for 5% star formation efficiency. The half-thickness of the disk of 8{mu}m cores is 105pc for NGC891 and 74pc for IC5052, varying with radius by a factor of ~2. For NGC3628, which is interacting, the half-thickness is 438pc, but even with this interaction, the 8{mu}m disk is remarkably flat, suggesting vertical stability. Small-scale structures like shingles or spirals are seen in the core positions. Very few of the 8{mu}m cores have optical counterparts.
