- We present results from an X-ray imaging survey of the young cluster NGC 2264, carried out with the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) on board the XMM-Newton spacecraft. The X-ray data are merged with extant optical and near-infrared photometry, spectral classifications, Halpha emission strengths, and rotation periods to examine the interrelationships between coronal and chromospheric activity, rotation, stellar mass, and internal structure for a statistically significant sample of pre-main-sequence stars. A total of 300 distinct X-ray sources can be identified with optical or near-infrared counterparts. The sources are concentrated within three regions of the cluster: in the vicinity of S Mon, within the large emission/reflection nebulosity southwest of S Mon, and along the broad ridge of molecular gas that extends from the Cone Nebula to the NGC 2264 IRS 2 field.

- We present the results of extensive multi-frequency monitoring of the radio galaxy 3C 111 between 2004 and 2010 at X-ray (2.4-10keV), optical (R band), and radio (14.5, 37, and 230GHz) wave bands, as well as multi-epoch imaging with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43GHz. Over the six years of observation, significant dips in the X-ray light curve are followed by ejections of bright superluminal knots in the VLBA images. This shows a clear connection between the radiative state near the black hole, where the X-rays are produced, and events in the jet. The X-ray continuum flux and Fe line intensity are strongly correlated, with a time lag shorter than 90 days and consistent with zero.

- Table 1 lists the sample of 173 stars observed for this study. They are selected from the Bright Star Catalogue (Cat. <V/50>), with the following selection criteria: - Spectral type between A8 and G2; no spectral peculiarities noted; not double in spectral type classification (e.g., HR 32 with spectral type F2V+F6V is excluded); - Luminosity class V; - Right ascension between 0h and 2h, or between 14h and 24 h, declination south of +10 degrees (defining the region on the sky visible during the appointed observation times); - Binaries for which both components occurred in the BSC are excluded, if the separation is less than 10". Not listed are five stars for which no (Walraven photometric and ROSAT X-ray) data are available. These are HR 591, HR 5542, HR 6593, HR 8245 and HR 8735. Table 2 lists the Walraven photometric (VBLUW) data for all but four stars from Table 1. Also listed in Table 2 are the effective temperature, surface gravity and the reddening, as derived from comparison with theoretical colours. - We present the X-ray properties of the extremely red objects (ERO) population observed by Chandra with three partially overlapping pointings (up to ~90ks) over an area of ~500arcmin^2^, down to a 0.5-8keV flux limit of ~10-15erg/cm^2^/s. We selected EROs using a multi-band photometric catalog down to a Ks-band magnitude of ~19.3 (Vega system); 14 EROs were detected in X-rays, corresponding to ~9% of the overall X-ray source population (149 X-ray sources) and to ~5% of the ERO population (288). The X-ray emission of all X-ray detected EROs is consistent with that of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) (>~3.5x10^42^erg/s at photometric redshifts z>1), in agreement with previous X-ray observations, with an indication of increasing absorption between the three X-ray brightest EROs and the 11 X-ray faintest EROs.

- We present XMM-Newton observations of three optically selected z>0.6 clusters from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), comprising the first results of a planned X-ray survey of the full EDisCS high-redshift sample. The EDisCS clusters were identified in the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey as surface brightness fluctuations in the optical sky and their masses and galaxy populations are well described by extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations. We detect two of the three clusters in the X-ray and place a firm upper limit on diffuse emission in the third cluster field. We are able to constrain the X-ray luminosity and temperature of the detected clusters and estimate their masses. We find that the X-ray properties of the detected EDisCS clusters are similar to those of X-ray-selected clusters of comparable mass and --- unlike other high-redshift, optically selected clusters --- are consistent with the T-sigma and L_X_-sigma relations determined from X-ray-selected clusters at low redshift. The X-ray determined mass estimates are generally consistent with those derived from weak-lensing and spectroscopic analyses. These preliminary results suggest that the novel method of optical selection used to construct the EDisCS catalogue may, like selection by X-ray luminosity, be well suited for identification of relaxed, high-redshift clusters whose intracluster medium is in place and stable by z=0.8.

- X-ray properties of NGC 300 point sources, extracted from 66ks of XMM-Newton data taken in 2000 December and 2001 January. A total of 163 sources were detected in the energy range of 0.3-6kev. We report on the global properties of the sources detected inside the D_25_ optical disk, such as the hardness ratio and X-ray fluxes, and on the properties of their optical counterparts found in B, V, and R images from the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope. Furthermore, we cross-correlate the X-ray sources with SIMBAD, the USNO-A2.0 catalog, and radio catalogues.

- The origin and evolution of the X-ray emission in very young stellar objects (YSOs) are not yet well understood because it is very hard to observe YSOs in the protostellar phase. Using COUP data, we study the X-ray properties of stars in the ONC in different evolutionary classes: luminosities, hydrogen column densities N_H_, effective plasma temperatures, and time variability are compared to understand if the interaction between the circumstellar material and the central object can influence the X-ray emission. We have assembled the deepest and most complete photometric catalog of objects in the ONC region from the UV to 8um using data from the HST Treasury Program; deep and almost simultaneous UBVI and JHK images taken, respectively, with WFI at ESO 2.2m and ISPI at CTIO 4m telescopes; and Spitzer IRAC imaging. We select high-probability candidate Class 0-I protostars, a sample of "bona fide" Class II stars, and a set of Class III stars with IR emission consistent with normal photospheres. Our principal result is that Class 0-Ia objects are significantly less luminous in X-rays, in both the total and hard bands, than the more evolved Class II stars with mass larger than 0.5M_{sun}_; the latter show X-ray luminosities similar to those of Class 0-Ib stars.

- With the goal of investigating the nature and the environment of the faint radio sources (at mJy level), here are presented results of X-ray identifications of Faint Imaging Radio Survey at Twenty centimetres (FIRST) in the 9deg^2^ Bootes field of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) Deep Wide Field Survey (NDWFS), using data from the Chandra XBootes survey. A total of 92 (10 per cent) FIRST radio sources are identified above the X-ray flux limit f_X_)(0.5-7)keV=8x10^-15^erg/s/cm^2^, and 79 optical counterparts are common to both the radio and X-ray sources. Spectroscopic identifications [obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey] were available for 22 sources (27 per cent).

- We report detections of X-rays from HH 80 and HH 81 with the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These are among the most luminous Herbig-Haro (HH) sources in the optical, and they are now the most luminous known in X-rays. These X-rays arise from the strong shocks that occur when the southern extension of this bipolar outflow slams into the ambient material. We imaged the central region of the bipolar flow revealing a complex of X-ray sources, including one near but not coincident with the putative power source in the radio and infrared.

- The young stellar cluster illuminating the W40 HII region, one of the nearest massive star-forming regions, has been observed with the ACIS detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Due to its high obscuration, this is a poorly studied stellar cluster with only a handful of bright stars visible in the optical band, including three OB stars identified as primary excitation sources. We detect 225 X-ray sources, of which 85% are confidently identified as young stellar members of the region. Two potential distances of the cluster, 260pc and 600pc, are used in the paper.
