- The catalogue of homogeneous photometry of bright stars on the DDO (System McClure and Forrester 1981) is a compilation of DDO photometry of 2196 bright G and K stars prepared from observations made at Kitt Peak National and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatories over the last several years using filter sets well matched to the standard system. The catalogue includes a large number of DDO stars whose data have been taken directly from the standard-star paper of McClure (1976AJ.....81..182M), plus a representative sample of stars selected from the Catalogue of Bright Stars (Hoffleit 1964, see Cat. V/50) and the Catalogue of High-Velocity Stars (Eggen 1964, see Cat. V/11) to have good velocities, spectral types and freedom from companion contamination. The catalogue contains HD Catalogue numbers, DM identifications; and the standard photometric indices of the DDO system. The number of observations from which each index was determined is also given, along with standard errors. - The space density of late M dwarfs, sub-types M7 to M9.5, is not well determined. We have applied the photo-type method of Skrzypek et al. to iz photometry from SDSS and YJHK photometry from UKIDSS, over an effective area of 3070deg^2^, to produce a new, bright J(Vega)<17.5, homogeneous sample of 33665 M7 to M9.5 dwarfs. The typical S/N of each source summed over the 6 bands is >100. Classifications are provided to the nearest half spectral sub-type. Through comparison with the classifications in the BUD spectroscopic sample of Schmidt et al. (2010, Cat. J/AJ/139/1808), the typing is shown to be accurately calibrated to the BUD classifications, with a precision better than 0.5 sub-types rms, i.e. is as precise as good spectroscopic classification. Sources with large chisq>20 include several catalogued late-type subdwarfs. The new sample of late M dwarfs is highly complete, but there is a bias in the classification of rare peculiar blue or red objects. For example L subdwarfs are misclassified towards earlier types by approximately two spectral sub-types. We estimate that this bias affects only ~1% of sources. Therefore the sample is well suited for measuring the luminosity function, as well as investigating the softening towards the Galactic plane of the exponential variation of density with height.

- Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) have so far been studied based on relatively small samples that are scattered throughout the sky. Their fundamental stellar and circumstellar parameters and statistical properties were derived with heterogeneous approaches before Gaia. Our main goal is to contribute to the study of HAeBes from the largest sample of such sources to date, for which stellar and circumstellar properties have been determined homogeneously from the analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and photometry. Multiwavelength photometry was compiled for 209 bona fide HAeBes for which Gaia EDR3 distances were estimated. Using the Virtual Observatory SED Analyser (VOSA), photospheric models were fit to the optical SEDs to derive stellar parameters, and the excesses at infrared (IR) and longer wavelengths were characterized to derive several circumstellar properties. A statistical analysis was carried out to show the potential use of such a large dataset. The stellar temperature, luminosity, radius, mass, and age were derived for each star based on optical photometry. In addition, their IR SEDs were classified according to two different schemes, and their mass accretion rates, disk masses, and the sizes of the inner dust holes were also estimated uniformly. The initial mass function fits the stellar mass distribution of the sample within 2<M_star_/M_{sun}_<12. In this aspect, the sample is therefore representative of the HAeBe regime and can be used for statistical purposes when it is taken into account that the boundaries are not well probed. Our statistical study does not reveal any connection between the SED shape from the Meeus et al., 2001A&A...365..476M classification and the presence of transitional disks, which are identified here based on the SEDs that show an IR excess starting at the K band or longer wavelengths. In contrast, only ~28% of the HAeBes have transitional disks, and the related dust disk holes are more frequent in HBes than in HAes (~34% vs 15%). The relatively small inner disk holes and old stellar ages estimated for most transitional HAes indicate that photoevaporation cannot be the main mechanism driving disk dissipation in these sources. In contrast, the inner disk holes and ages of most transitional HBes are consistent with the photoevaporation scenario, although these results alone do not unambiguously discard other disk dissipation mechanisms. The complete dataset is available online through a Virtual Observatory- compliant archive, representing the most recent reference for statistical studies on the HAeBe regime. VOSA is a complementary tool for the future characterization of newly identified HAeBes.

- We present a spectrum and a photometric analysis of the newly discovered, high-amplitude, solar-type, eclipsing binary HO Piscium. A spectroscopic identification, a period study, q-search, and a simultaneous UBVRcIc light-curve solution are presented. The spectra and our photometric solution indicate that HO Psc is a W-type W UMa shallow-contact (fill-out ~8%) binary system. The primary component has a G6V spectral type with an apparently precontact spectral type of M2V for the secondary component. The small fill-out indicates that the system has not yet achieved thermal contact and thus has recently come into physical contact. This may mean that this solar-type binary system has not attained its ~0.4 mass ratio via a long period of magnetic braking, as would normally be assumed.

- The correlation between the large-scale distribution of galaxies and their spectroscopic properties at z=1.5 is investigated using the Horizon MareNostrum cosmological run. We have extracted a large sample of 105 galaxies from this large hydrodynamical simulation featuring standard galaxy formation physics. Spectral synthesis is applied to these single stellar populations to generate spectra and colours for all galaxies. We use the skeleton as a tracer of the cosmic web and study how our galaxy catalogue depends on the distance to the skeleton. We show that galaxies closer to the skeleton tend to be redder but that the effect is mostly due to the proximity of large haloes at the nodes of the skeleton, rather than the filaments themselves. - We used FLAMES+GIRAFFE (Medusa mode) at the VLT to obtain moderately high resolution spectra for 30 red horizontal branch (RHB) stars, 4 RR Lyrae variables, and 17 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the low-concentration, moderately metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6723 ([Fe/H]=-1.22+/-0.08 from our present sample). The spectra were optimized to derive O and Na abundances. In addition, we obtained abundances for other elements, including N, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ni, and Ba. We used these data to discuss the evidence of a connection between the distribution of stars along the horizontal branch (HB) and the multiple populations that are typically present in globular clusters. We found that all RHB and most (13 out of 17) BHB stars are O-rich, Na-poor, and N-poor; these stars probably belong to the first stellar generation in this cluster. Only the four warmest observed stars are (moderately) O-poor, Na-rich, and N-rich, and they probably belong to the second generation. While our sample is not fully representative of the whole HB population in NGC 6723, our data suggest that in this cluster only HB stars warmer than ~9000K, that is one fourth of the total, belong to the second generation, if at all. Since in many other clusters this fraction is about two thirds, we conclude that the fraction of first/second generation in globular clusters may be strongly variable. In addition, the wide range in colour of chemically homogeneous first-generation HB stars requires a considerable spread in mass loss (>0.10M_{sun}_). The reason for this spread is yet to be understood. Finally, we found a high Ba abundance, with a statistically significant radial abundance gradient.

- We measure the number of companions per galaxy (N_c_) as a function of r-band absolute magnitude for both the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR5) and the Croton and coworkers semianalytic catalog, 2006MNRAS.365...11C, applied to the Millennium Run simulation (Springel et al., 2005Natur.435..629S). For close pairs with projected separations of 5-20kpc/h, velocity differences less than 500km/s, and luminosity ratios between 1:2 and 2:1, we find good agreement between the observations and simulations, with N_c_ consistently close to 0.02 over the range -22<M_r_<-18. For larger pair separations, N_c_(M_r_) instead becomes increasingly steep toward the faint end, implying that luminosity-dependent clustering plays an important role on small scales. Using the simulations to assess and correct for projection effects, we infer that the real-space N_c_(M_r_) for close pairs peaks at about M^*^ and declines by at least a factor of 2 as M_r_ becomes fainter. Conversely, by measuring the number density of close companions, we estimate that at least 90% of all major mergers occur between galaxies which are fainter than L^*^. Finally, measurements of the luminosity density of close companions indicate that L^*^ galaxies likely dominate in terms of the overall importance of major mergers in the evolution of galaxy populations at low redshift.

- We present and discuss optical imaging of 76 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that represent the selected Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) sample for z<0.3, from a full list of 243. They are found to have dust-obscured nuclei, residing in host galaxies that show a high fraction (greater than 70%) of tidal interactions. The derived luminosities of the AGNs and host galaxies are similar to traditionally selected AGNs, and they may comprise some 40% of the total AGN population at low redshift. We have measured a number of host galaxy properties and discuss their distributions and interrelations. We compare the 2MASS AGNs with optically selected samples and the IRAS-selected galaxy samples and discuss the differences in terms of merger processes and initial conditions.

- We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 UV and near-IR (nIR) imaging of 21 Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) host galaxies, providing a sensitive probe of star formation and stellar mass within the hosts. Comparing the photometric and morphological properties of these host galaxies with those of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), we find SLSN hosts are fainter and more compact at both UV and nIR wavelengths, in some cases we barely recover hosts with absolute magnitude around M_V_~=-14. With the addition of ground based optical observations and archival results, we produce spectral energy distribution fits to these hosts, and show that SLSN hosts possess lower stellar mass and star formation rates. This is most pronounced for the hydrogen deficient Type-I SLSN hosts, although Type-II H-rich SLSN host galaxies remain distinct from the bulk of CCSNe, spanning a remarkably broad range of absolute magnitudes, with ~30 per cent of SLSNe-II arising from galaxies fainter than M_nIR_~-14. The detection of our faintest SLSN hosts increases the confidence that SLSNe-I hosts are distinct from those of LGRBs in star formation rate and stellar mass, and suggests that apparent similarities in metallicity may be due to the limited fraction of hosts for which emission line metallicity measurements are feasible. The broad range of luminosities of SLSN-II hosts is difficult to describe by metallicity cuts, and does not match the expectations of any reasonable UV-weighted luminosity function, suggesting additional environmental constraints are likely necessary to yield hydrogen rich SLSNe.

- We present ultraviolet through near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the host galaxies of all superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory prior to 2013 and derive measurements of their luminosities, star formation rates, stellar masses, and gas-phase metallicities. We find that Type I (hydrogen-poor) SLSNe (SLSNe I) are found almost exclusively in low-mass (M_*_<2x10^9^M_{sun}_) and metal-poor (12+log_10_[O/H]<8.4) galaxies. We compare the mass and metallicity distributions of our sample to nearby galaxy catalogs in detail and conclude that the rate of SLSNe I as a fraction of all SNe is heavily suppressed in galaxies with metallicities >~0.5Z_{sun}_. Extremely low metallicities are not required and indeed provide no further increase in the relative SLSN rate. Several SLSN I hosts are undergoing vigorous starbursts, but this may simply be a side effect of metallicity dependence: dwarf galaxies tend to have bursty star formation histories. Type II (hydrogen-rich) SLSNe (SLSNe II) are found over the entire range of galaxy masses and metallicities, and their integrated properties do not suggest a strong preference for (or against) low-mass/low-metallicity galaxies. Two hosts exhibit unusual properties: PTF 10uhf is an SLSN I in a massive, luminous infrared galaxy at redshift z=0.29, while PTF 10tpz is an SLSN II located in the nucleus of an early-type host at z=0.04.
