- We present a catalog of 80 very wide fragile binary candidates (projected separations >10000AU) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Eight spectral archive. The pairs were selected based on proper motion, radial velocity, metallicity, and photometric parallax criteria. The angular separations of these pairs range from 3" to 250". The peak in the metallicity distribution of these pairs is about -0.5dex of solar metallicity. Space motions and reduced proper motion diagrams indicate that all these pairs are members of the disk. The chromospheric activity index S_HK_ of each component in 38 binary candidates having spectra of high signal-to-noise ratio and member stars of three open clusters (NGC 2420, M67, and NGC 6791) were measured. The S_HK_ versus color relation for these binary candidates is consistent with the trend seen in these open clusters. The ages implied by this relation suggest that fragile wide pairs can survive longer than 8Gyr.

- Star-forming dwarf galaxies in the local volume are diverse and ideal test beds to understand the details of star formation in a variety of environments. Here we present a deep far-UV (FUV) imaging study of the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy IC 2574 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope. We identified 419 FUV-bright regions with radii between 15 and 285 pc in the galaxy and found that 28.6% of them are located in H I shells, 12.6% inside holes, and 60.1% away from the holes. The H I column density is found to be more than 10^21^ cm^-2^ for 82.3% of the identified regions. Thirty of the 48 H I holes show triggered star formation in their shells, while 16 holes do not show any related FUV emission. Cross-matching with H{alpha} emission, we found that 23 holes have both FUV and H{alpha} emission in their shells, signifying a very recent trigger. Therefore, star formation in the galaxy has been partly triggered due to the expanding H I holes, whereas in the majority of the sites, it is driven by other mechanisms. Irrespective of the location, larger star-forming complexes were found to have multiple substructures. We report two resolved components for the remnant cluster of the supergiant shell and estimate their masses. The star formation rate of IC 2574 is found to be 0.57 M_{sun}_/yr, which is slightly higher compared to the average value of other nearby dwarf irregular galaxies.

- We have obtained multi-wavelength observations of compact Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) to probe post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolution from the onset of nebular ejection. We analyze new observations from Hubble Space Telescope to derive the masses and evolutionary status of their central stars (CSs) in order to better understand the relationship between the CS properties and those of the surrounding nebulae. We work with HST/WFC3 images of 51 targets obtained in a snapshot survey (GO-11657). The high spatial resolution of HST allows us to resolve these compact PNe and distinguish the CS emission from that of their surrounding PNe. The targets were imaged through the filters F200LP, F350LP, and F814W from which we derive Johnson V and I magnitudes. We derive CS bolometric luminosities and effective temperatures using the Zanstra technique, from a combination of HST photometry and ground-based spectroscopic data. We present new unique photometric measurements of 50 CSs, and derived effective temperatures and luminosities for most of them.

- We developed an algorithm to find and characterize gravitationally lensed galaxies (arcs) to perform a comparison of the observed and simulated arc abundance. Observations are from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). Simulated CLASH images are created using the MOKA package and also clusters selected from the high-resolution, hydrodynamical simulations, MUSIC, over the same mass and redshift range as the CLASH sample. The algorithm's arc elongation accuracy, completeness, and false positive rate are determined and used to compute an estimate of the true arc abundance. We derive a lensing efficiency of 4+/-1 arcs (with length >=6" and length-to-width ratio >=7) per cluster for the X-ray-selected CLASH sample, 4+/-1 arcs per cluster for the MOKA-simulated sample, and 3+/-1 arcs per cluster for the MUSIC-simulated sample. The observed and simulated arc statistics are in full agreement. We measure the photometric redshifts of all detected arcs and find a median redshift z_s_=1.9 with 33% of the detected arcs having z_s_>3. We find that the arc abundance does not depend strongly on the source redshift distribution but is sensitive to the mass distribution of the dark matter halos (e.g., the c-M relation). Our results show that consistency between the observed and simulated distributions of lensed arc sizes and axial ratios can be achieved by using cluster-lensing simulations that are carefully matched to the selection criteria used in the observations.

- Spitzer mid-infrared surveys enable an accurate census of young stellar objects by sampling large spatial scales, revealing very embedded protostars, and detecting low-luminosity objects. Taking advantage of these capabilities, we present a Spitzer-based census of the IC 348 nebula and embedded star cluster, covering a 2.5pc region and comparable in extent to the Orion Nebula. Our Spitzer census supplemented with ground-based spectra has added 42 Class II T Tauri sources to the cluster membership and identified ~20 Class 0/I protostars. The population of IC 348 likely exceeds 400 sources after accounting statistically for unidentified diskless members. Our Spitzer census of IC 348 reveals a population of Class I protostars that is anticorrelated spatially with the Class II/III T Tauri members, which comprise the centrally condensed cluster around a B star.

- The distribution of multiplicity among low-mass stars is a key issue to understanding the formation of stars and brown dwarfs, and recent surveys have yielded large enough samples of nearby low-mass stars to study this issue statistically to good accuracy. Previously, we have presented a multiplicity study of ~700 early/mid M-type stars observed with the AstraLux high-resolution Lucky Imaging cameras. Here, we extend the study of multiplicity in M-type stars through studying 286 nearby mid/late M-type stars, bridging the gap between our previous study and multiplicity studies of brown dwarfs. Most of the targets have been observed more than once, allowing us to assess common proper motion to confirm companionship. We detect 68 confirmed or probable companions in 66 systems, of which 41 were previously undiscovered. Detections are made down to the resolution limit of ~100 mas of the instrument. The raw multiplicity in the AstraLux sensitivity range is 17.9%, leading to a total multiplicity fraction of 21%-27% depending on the mass ratio distribution, which is consistent with being flat down to mass ratios of ~0.4, but cannot be stringently constrained below this value. The semi-major axis distribution is well represented by a log-normal function with {mu}_a_= 0.78 and {sigma}_a_= 0.47, which is narrower and peaked at smaller separations than for a Sun-like sample. This is consistent with a steady decrease in average semi-major axis from the highest-mass binary stars to the brown dwarf binaries.

- We find two chemically distinct populations separated relatively cleanly in the [Fe/H]-[Mg/Fe] plane, but also distinguished in other chemical planes, among metal-poor stars (primarily with metallicities [Fe/H]<-0.9) observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and analyzed for Data Release 13 (DR13) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These two stellar populations show the most significant differences in their [X/Fe] ratios for the {alpha}-elements, C+N, Al, and Ni. In addition to these populations having differing chemistry, the low metallicity high-Mg population (which we denote "the HMg population") exhibits a significant net Galactic rotation, whereas the low-Mg population (or "the LMg population") has halo-like kinematics with little to no net rotation. Based on its properties, the origin of the LMg population is likely an accreted population of stars. The HMg population shows chemistry (and to an extent kinematics) similar to the thick disk, and is likely associated with in situ formation. The distinction between the LMg and HMg populations mimics the differences between the populations of low- and high-{alpha} halo stars found in previous studies, suggesting that these are samples of the same two populations.

- The N2K planet search program was designed to exploit the planet-metallicity correlation by searching for gas giant planets orbiting metal-rich stars. Here, we present the radial velocity measurements for 378 N2K target stars that were observed with the HIRES spectrograph at Keck Observatory between 2004 and 2017. With this data set, we announce the discovery of six new gas giant exoplanets: a double-planet system orbiting HD 148164 (Msini of 1.23 and 5.16 M_JUP_) and single planet detections around HD 55696 (Msini=3.87 M_JUP_), HD 98736 (Msini=2.33 M_JUP_), HD 203473 (Msini=7.8 M_JUP_), and HD 211810 (Msini=0.67 M_JUP_). These gas giant companions have orbital semimajor axes between 1.0 and 6.2 au and eccentricities ranging from 0.13 to 0.71. We also report evidence for three gravitationally bound companions with Msini between 20 and 30 M_JUP_, placing them in the mass range of brown dwarfs, around HD 148284, HD 214823, and HD 217850, and four low-mass stellar companions orbiting HD 3404, HD 24505, HD 98630, and HD 103459. In addition, we present updated orbital parameters for 42 previously announced planets. We also report a nondetection of the putative companion HD 73256 b. Finally, we highlight the most promising candidates for direct imaging and astrometric detection, and we find that many hot Jupiters from our sample could be detectable by state-of-the-art telescopes such as Gaia.
