- Description:
- We present the results of a program to study the detailed morphologies of galaxies in intermediate-redshift clusters and hence understand the physical origin of the enhanced star formation seen in the environments at earlier epochs. Deep, high-resolution imagery has been obtained of three rich clusters, AC 103, AC 118 and AC 114 at z=0.31, through the R (F702W) filter of the Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC2) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

- Description:
- We study the spatially resolved physical properties of the Cosmic Snake arc in MACS J1206.2-0847 and the arc in Abell 0521 (A521). These are two strongly lensed galaxies at redshifts z=1.036 and z=1.044. We used observations of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The former gives access to the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass (M*), and the latter to the H_2_ molecular gas mass (Mmol). HST and ALMA observations have similar angular resolutions of 0.15"-0.2", which with the help of strong gravitational lensing enable us to reach spatial resolutions down to ~30pc and ~100pc in these two galaxies, respectively. These resolutions are close to the resolution of observations of nearby galaxies. We study the radial profiles of SFR, M*, and Mmol surface densities of these high-redshift galaxies and compare the corresponding exponential scale lengths with those of local galaxies. We find that the scale lengths in the Cosmic Snake are about 0.5kpc-1.5kpc, and they are 3 to 10 times larger in A521. This is a significant difference knowing that the two galaxies have comparable integrated properties. These high-redshift scale lengths are nevertheless comparable to those of local galaxies, which cover a wide distribution. The particularity of our high-redshift radial profiles is the normalisation of the Mmol surface density profiles (Sigma Mmol), which are offset by up to a factor of 20 with respect to the profiles of z=0 counterparts. The SFR surface density profiles are also offset by the same factor as {SIGMA}Mmol, as expected from the Kennicutt-Schmidt law.

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The AAVSO Photometric All Sky Survey (APASS) project is designed to bridge the gap between the shallow Tycho2 two-bandpass photometric catalog that is complete to V=11 and the deeper, but less spatially-complete catalogs like SDSS or PanSTARRS. It can be used for calibration of a specific field; for obtaining spectral information about single sources, determining reddening in a small area of the sky; or even obtaining current-epoch astrometry for rapidly moving objects. The survey is being performed at two locations: near Weed, New Mexico in the Northern Hemisphere; and at CTIO in the Southern Hemisphere. Each site consists of dual bore-sighted 20cm telescopes on a single mount, designed to obtain two bandpasses of information simultaneously. Each telescope covers 9 square degrees of sky with 2.5arcsec pixels, with the main survey taken with B,V,g',r',i' filters and covering the magnitude range 10<V<17. A bright extension is underway, saturating at V=7 and extending the wavelength coverage from u' to Y. The current catalog is Data Release 9 and contains approximately 62 million stars. The American Association of Variable Star Observers is responsible for the overall management of the survey; a team of professional astronomers participate in the data analysis. The project was initially funded by the Robert Martin Ayers Sciences Fund, with a follow-on grant from the National Science Foundation.

- Description:
- This paper is aimed at giving an overview of the global properties of the rich cluster of galaxies ABCG 209. This is achieved by complementing the already available data with new medium-resolution spectroscopy and near-infrared (NIR) photometry which allow us to (i) analyse in detail the cluster dynamics, distinguishing among galaxies belonging to different substructures and deriving their individual velocity distributions, using a total sample of 148 galaxies in the cluster region, of which 134 belonging to the cluster; (ii) derive the cluster NIR luminosity function; (iii) study the Kormendy relation and the photometric plane of cluster early-type galaxies (ETGs). Finally we provide an extensive photometric (optical and NIR) and spectroscopic data set for such a complex system to be used in further analyses investigating the nature, formation and evolution of rich clusters of galaxies.

- Description:
- We present a catalogue of velocities for 551 galaxies (and give the coordinates of 39 stars misclassified as galaxies in our photometric plate catalogue) in a region covering about 100'x100' (0.94x0.94Mpc for an average redshift of 0.0555, assuming H_0_=50km/s/Mpc) in the direction of the rich cluster ABCG85. This catalogue includes previously published redshifts by Beers et al. (1991AJ....102.1581B) and Malumuth et al. (1992AJ....104..495M), together with our 367 new measurements. A total of 305 galaxies have velocities in the interval 13350-20000km/s, and will be considered as members of the cluster. ABCG 85 therefore becomes one of the clusters with the highest number of measured redshifts; its optical properties are being investigated in a companion paper.

- Description:
- We present a study of star formation and central black hole accretion activity of galaxies that are hosted in the two nearby (z~0.2) rich galaxy clusters Abell 983 and 1731. We aim to quantify both the obscured and unobscured star formation rates, as well as the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) as a function of the environment in which the galaxy is located. We targeted the clusters with unprecedented deep infrared Spitzer observations (0.2mJy @ 24-micron), near-IR Palomar imaging and optical WIYN spectroscopy. The extent of our observations (~3 virial radii) covers the vast of possible environments, from the very dense cluster centre to the very rarefied cluster outskirts and accretion regions. The star-forming members of the two clusters present star formation rates that are comparable with those measured in coeval field galaxies. Analysis of the spatial arrangement of the spectroscopically confirmed members reveals an elongated distribution for A1731 with respect to the more uniform distribution of A983. The emerging picture is compatible with A983 being a fully evolved cluster, in contrast with the still actively accreting A1731. Analysis of the specific star formation rate reveals evidence of ongoing galaxy pre-processing along A1731's filament-like structure. Furthermore, the decrease in the number of star-forming galaxies and AGN towards the cluster cores suggests that the cluster environment is accelerating the ageing process of the galaxies and blocking further accretion of the cold gas that fuels both star formation and black hole accretion activity.

- Description:
- A CCD camera survey has been conducted of the X-ray emitting regions of a sample of clusters of galaxies. This sample includes at least one cluster from each of the classes in the new Forman-Jones classification scheme (Forman & Jones 1982ARA&A..20..547F). In this paper, the techniques used to obtain, reduce and analyse the data are presented, along with results for the cluster Abell 85. For the central X-ray emitting region of this cluster, a core radius of between 1.2 and 1.6Mpc is estimated from the galaxy radial number density distribution. The properties of the galaxies in the core of this cluster are significantly different from those of the galaxies in the outer regions of the area covered in the survey, in terms of luminosity function and colour distribution.

- Description:
- We present CCD photometry of 209 southern Abell clusters selected according to Bautz-Morgan type I, III, and II. We have performed total photometry in the Gunn r bandpass, classified stars and galaxies, and obtained structural parameters for the images. To estimate the photometric and structural errors on the CCD images and the completeness limits of our photometry, we performed realistic simulations of stars and galaxies and ran our classification algorithms. Here, we present central galaxy counts and metric photometry of the brightest cluster members, for which we give accurate positions, and compare this photometry with values in the literature. A linear magnitude-redshift relation has been derived from the tenth-ranked galaxy in each cluster. Photometric redshifts have been estimated for 57 clusters. We provide either spectroscopic or photometric redshifts for all the clusters in our sample. Further analysis of these data will be presented in further publications.

- Description:
- The mergers of galaxy clusters are the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. An ever increasing fraction of local clusters exhibit signs of recent or past mergers. Our goal is to probe how these mergers affect the evolution and content of their member galaxies. We specifically aim to answer the following questions: Is the quenching of star formation in merging clusters enhanced when compared with relaxed clusters? Is the quenching accompanied by a (short lived) burst of star formation? We obtained optical spectroscopy of $>400$ galaxies in the field of the merging cluster Abell 520. We combine these observations with archival data to get a comprehensive picture of the state of star formation in the members of this merging cluster. Finally, we compare these observations with a control sample of 10 non-merging clusters at the same redshift from The Arizona Cluster Redshift Survey (ACReS). We split the member galaxies in passive, star forming or recently quenched depending on their spectra. The core of the merger shows a decreased fraction of star-forming galaxies compared to clusters in the non-merging sample. This region, dominated by passive galaxies, is extended along the axis of the merger. We find evidence of rapid quenching of the galaxies during the core passage with no signs of a star burst on the time scales of the merger. Additionally, we report the tentative discovery of an infalling group along the main filament feeding the merger, currently at ~2.5Mpc from the merger centre. This group contains a high fraction of star forming galaxies as well as ~2/3 of all the recently quenched galaxies in our survey.

- Description:
- We initiated a large project aimed to estimate the Luminosity Function of galaxies in clusters and to evaluate its relation to cluster morphology. With this paper we deem necessary to outline the general procedures of the data reduction and details of the data analysis. The cluster sample includes the brightest southern ROSAT all-sky survey clusters with z<0.1 . These have been observed in three colours g, r, i, and mapped up to a few core radii using a mosaic of CCD frames. E/S0 galaxies in the cluster core are singled out both by morphology (for the brightest galaxies), and by colour. The details of the data reduction procedure are illustrated via the analysis of the cluster Abell 496, which has been used as a pilot cluster for the whole program. The related photometric catalogue consists of 2355 objects. The limiting magnitudes (the reference Surface Brightness is given in parenthesis) in the various colours are respectively g(25.5)=24.14, r(25.5)=24.46, i(25.0)=23.75. These correspond to the limiting absolute magnitudes -12.28, -11.96 and -12.67 (H_0_=50km/s/Mpc).

- Description:
- The galaxy population in the intermediate-redshift (z=0.228) rich cluster Abell 2390 is investigated. We present velocities, colors, and morphological information for an exceptionally large sample of 323 galaxies (216 cluster members) in a 46'x7' (6h^-1^Mpcx1h^-1^Mpc) strip centered on the cD galaxy. This sample of confirmed cluster members is second only to that for the Coma cluster in terms of sample size and spatial coverage in the cluster rest frame and it is the first to trace the transition between a rich cluster and the field at intermediate redshift. The galaxy population in the cluster changes gradually from a very evolved, early-type population in the inner 0.4h^-1^Mpc of the cluster to a progressively later type population in the extensive outer envelope of the cluster from 1 to 3h^-1^Mpc in radius. Radial gradients in galaxy gr color, 4000{AA} break, H{delta} and [O II] line strengths, and morphology are seen in the cluster and are investigated by comparing the data to models computed with the GISSEL spectral synthesis package. The results suggest that the cluster has been built up gradually by the infall of field galaxies over ~8Gyr and that star formation has been truncated in infalling galaxies during the accretion process. The morphological composition of the cluster is shown to be consistent with such a scenario. If true for other clusters, infall-truncated star formation as seen in Abell 2390 may explain both the Butcher-Oemler effect and the large fraction of S0 galaxies in clusters. Only <5% of the galaxies observed in Abell 2390 exhibit evidence for star formation at levels stronger than those seen in typical late-type systems. This suggests that starbursts do not play a major role in driving cluster galaxy evolution at the redshift of Abell 2390, although infall-induced starbursts leading to truncated star formation may have played a role in the earlier history of the cluster. Evidence is found for at least one subcomponent on the west side of the cluster, which is likely to be infalling at the epoch of observation. For a description of the Gunn photometric system, see e.g. <GCPD/38>

- Description:
- The morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in clusters have until now been limited to a few relatively nearby clusters such as Virgo or Fornax. Scenarii for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies in clusters are therefore not well constrained. We investigate here the morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity galaxies in the relaxed richness class 1 cluster Abell 496 (z=0.0330). Deep multiband imaging obtained with the CFHT Megacam allowed us to select a sample of faint galaxies, defined here as objects with magnitudes 18<r'<22mag within a 1.2arcsec fibre (-18.8<MB<-15.1mag). We observed 118 galaxies spectroscopically with the ESO VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrograph with a resolving power R=6300. We present structural analysis and colour maps for the 48 galaxies belonging to the cluster. We fit the spectra of 46 objects with PEGASE. HR synthetic spectra to estimate the ages, metallicities, and velocity dispersions. We estimated possible biases by similarly analysing spectra of ~1200 early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). We computed values of {alpha}/Fe abundance ratios from the measurements of Lick indices. We briefly discuss effects of the fixed aperture size on the measurements.

- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/469/3946
- Date:

- Description:
- We present a strong lensing analysis on the massive cluster Abell 370 (A370; z=0.375), using a combination of deep multiband Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectroscopy. From only 2 h of the MUSE data, we are able to measure 120 redshifts in the southern BCG area, including several multiply imaged lens systems. In total, we increase the number of multiply imaged systems with a secure redshift from 4 to 15, nine of which are newly discovered. Of these, eight are located at z>3, greatly extending the redshift range of spectroscopically confirmed systems over previous work. Using these systems as constraints, we update a parametric lens model of A370, probing the mass distribution from cluster to galaxy scales. Overall, we find that a model with only two cluster-scale dark matter haloes (one for each BCG) does a poor job of fitting these new image constraints. Instead, two additional mass clumps - a central 'bar' of mass located between the BCGs, and another clump located within a 'crown' of galaxies in the northern part of the cluster field - provide significant improvements to the fit. Additional physical evidence suggests these clumps are indeed real features of the system, but with relatively few image constraints in the crown region, this claim is difficult to evaluate from a modelling perspective. Additional MUSE observations of A370 covering the entire strong-lensing region will greatly help these efforts, further improving our understanding of this intriguing cluster.

- Description:
- We analyse the Kormendy relations (KRs) of the two Frontier Fields clusters, Abell S1063, at z=0.348, and MACS J1149.5+2223, at z=0.542, exploiting very deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry and Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field spectroscopy. With this novel data set, we are able to investigate how the KR parameters depend on the cluster galaxy sample selection and how this affects studies of galaxy evolution based on the KR. We define and compare four different galaxy samples according to (a) Sersic indices: early-type ('ETG'), (b) visual inspection: 'ellipticals', (c) colours: 'red', (d) spectral properties: 'passive'. The classification is performed for a complete sample of galaxies with m_F814W_<=22.5-ABmag (M_*_>=10^10.0^M_{sun}_). To derive robust galaxy structural parameters, we use two methods: (1) an iterative estimate of structural parameters using images of increasing size, in order to deal with closely separated galaxies and (2) different background estimations, to deal with the intracluster light contamination. The comparison between the KRs obtained from the different samples suggests that the sample selection could affect the estimate of the best-fitting KR parameters. The KR built with ETGs is fully consistent with the one obtained for ellipticals and passive. On the other hand, the KR slope built on the red sample is only marginally consistent with those obtained with the other samples. We also release the photometric catalogue with structural parameters for the galaxies included in the present analysis.

- Description:
- Taking advantage of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe82 data, we have explored the spatial distribution of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) within an area of 8x8Mpc^2^ centred around the galaxy cluster Abell 168 (z=0.045). This intermediate massive cluster ({sigma}=550km/s) is surrounded by a complex large-scale structure. Our work confirms the presence of UDGs in the cluster and in the large-scale structure that surrounds it, and it is the first detection of UDGs outside clusters. Approximately 50 per cent of the UDGs analysed in the selected area inhabit the cluster region (~11+/-5 per cent in the core and ~39+/-9 per cent in the outskirts), whereas the remaining UDGs are found outside the main cluster structure (~50+/-11 per cent). The colours and the spatial distribution of the UDGs within this large-scale structure are more similar to dwarf galaxies than to L* galaxies, suggesting that most UDGs could be bona fide dwarf galaxies.

- Description:
- We report observations of the radio galaxy 3C317 (at z=0.0345) located at the center of the Abell cluster A2052, obtained with the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph. The Chandra images of this cluster show cavities in the X-ray emitting gas, which were produced by the expansion of the radio lobes inflated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Our exquisite MUSE data show with unprecedented detail the complex network of line emitting filaments enshrouding the northern X-ray cavity. We do not detect any emission lines from the southern cavity, with a luminosity asymmetry between the two regions higher than ~75. The emission lines produced by the warm phase of the interstellar medium (WIM) enable us to obtain unique information on the properties of the emitting gas. We find dense gas (up to 270cm^-3^) that makes up part of a global quasi spherical outflow that is driven by the radio source, and obtain a direct estimate of the expansion velocity of the cavities (265km/s). The emission lines diagnostic rules out ionization from the AGN or from star-forming regions, suggesting instead ionization from slow shocks or from cosmic rays. The striking asymmetric line emission observed between the two cavities contrasts with the less pronounced differences between the north and south sides in the hot gas; this represents a significant new ingredient for our understanding of the process of the exchange of energy between the relativistic plasma and the external medium. We conclude that the expanding radio lobes displace the hot tenuous phase of the interstellar medium (ISM), but also impact the colder and denser ISM phases. These results show the effects of the AGN on its host and the importance of radio mode feedback.

- Description:
- Using reliable trigonometric measurements, we find that the absolute magnitude of cataclysmic variables depends on the orbital period and de-reddened (J-H)_0_ and (H-Ks)_0_ colours of 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) photometric system. The calibration equation covers the ranges 0.032d<P_orb_<=0.454d, -0.08<(J-H)_0_<=1.54, -0.03<(H-Ks)_0_<=0.56 and 2.0<M_J_<11.7; It is based on trigonometric parallaxes with relative errors of ({sigma}{pi}/{pi})<=0.4. By using the period-luminosity-colours (PLCs) relation, we estimated the distances of cataclysmic variables with orbital periods and 2MASS observations and compared them with distances found from other methods. We suggest that the PLCs relation can be a useful statistical tool to estimate the distances of cataclysmic variables.

- Description:
- The field of direct imaging is experiencing a considerable growth in the number of available CCD mosaic imagers, especially on large telescopes. To fully exploit the astrometric potential of these imaging devices, we develop a technique, utilizing an astrometric standard, for precision transformation of pixel coordinates into a global coordinate system. We have constructed a new astrometric standard set of 1863 stars in the field of NGC 188 to derive the CCD chip constants for the NOAO CCD Mosaic Imager. The multiple-epoch data on the Mosaic's metrics indicate that this CCD mosaic device may have experienced a one-time nonelastic expansion. We also present a new determination of the pixel scale and the optical field angle distortion constants for the KPNO Mayall 4 m telescope prime focus field corrector. To establish a reliable history of the CCD mosaic imager metrics for current and potential future astrometric applications, we recommend obtaining astrometric calibrations for CCD mosaic imagers on a regular basis. Apart from mechanical positioning of the CCD mosaic camera on the telescope, noticeable changes in the thermal environment of CCD mosaic chips should also prompt new astrometric calibrations. It is shown that, following all precautions, the NOAO CCD Mosaic Imager can produce excellent astrometric results on the Mayall 4 m telescope.

- Description:
- We report extensive spectroscopic and differential V-band photometric observations of the 18.4 day detached double-lined eclipsing binary LV Her (F9V), which has the highest eccentricity (e~0.613) among the systems with well-measured properties. We determine the absolute masses and radii of the components to be M1=1.193+/-0.010M_{sun}_, M2=1.1698+/-0.0081M_{sun}_, R1=1.358+/-0.012R_{sun}_, and R2=1.313+/-0.011R_{sun}_, with fractional errors of 0.9% or better. The effective temperatures are 6060+/-150K and 6030+/-150K, respectively, and the overall metallicity is estimated to be [m/H]=+0.08+/-0.21. A comparison with current stellar evolution models for this composition indicates an excellent fit for an age between 3.8 and 4.2Gyr, with both stars being near the middle of their main-sequence lifetimes. Full integration of the equations for tidal evolution is consistent with the high eccentricity, and suggests that the stars' spin axes are aligned with the orbital axis, and that their rotations should be pseudo-synchronized. The latter prediction is not quite in agreement with the measured projected rotational velocities.

- Description:
- We provide measurements of the absolute reflectivity of Jupiter and Saturn along their central meridians in filters covering a wide range of visible and near-infrared wavelengths (from 0.38 to 1.7um) that are not often presented in the literature. We also give measurements of the geometric albedo of both planets and discuss the limb-darkening behavior and temporal variability of their reflectivity values for a period of four years (2012-2016). This work is based on observations with the PlanetCam-UPV/EHU instrument at the 1.23m and 2.2m telescopes in Calar Alto Observatory (Spain). The instrument simultaneously observes in two channels: visible (VIS; 0.38-1.0um) and short-wave infrared (SWIR; 1.0-1.7um). We obtained high-resolution observations via the lucky-imaging method. We show that our calibration is consistent with previous independent determinations of reflectivity values of these planets and, for future reference, provide new data extended in the wavelength range and in the time. Our results have an uncertainty in absolute calibration of 10-20%. We show that under the hypothesis of constant geometric albedo, we are able to detect absolute reflectivity changes related to planetary temporal evolution of about 5-10%.

- Description:
- We examine the absolute magnitudes and light-curve shapes of 14 nearby (redshift z=0.004-0.027) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed in the ultraviolet (UV) with the Swift Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope. Colors and absolute magnitudes are calculated using both a standard Milky Way extinction law and one for the Large Magellanic Cloud that has been modified by circumstellar scattering. We find very different behavior in the near-UV filters (uvw1_rc_ covering ~2600-3300{AA} after removing optical light, and u~3000-4000{AA}) compared to a mid-UV filter (uvm2~2000-2400{AA}).

- Description:
- We have performed a differential line-by-line chemical abundance analysis, ultimately relative to the Sun, of nine very metal-poor main-sequence (MS) halo stars, near [Fe/H]=-2dex. Our abundances range from -2.66<=[Fe/H]<=-1.40dex with conservative uncertainties of 0.07dex. We find an average [{alpha}/Fe]=0.34+/-0.09dex, typical of the Milky Way. While our spectroscopic atmosphere parameters provide good agreement with Hubble Space Telescope parallaxes, there is significant disagreement with temperature and gravity parameters indicated by observed colors and theoretical isochrones. Although a systematic underestimate of the stellar temperature by a few hundred degrees could explain this difference, it is not supported by current effective temperature studies and would create large uncertainties in the abundance determinations. Both 1D and <3D> hydrodynamical models combined with separate 1D non-LTE effects do not yet account for the atmospheres of real metal-poor MS stars, but a fully 3D non-LTE treatment may be able to explain the ionization imbalance found in this work.

- Abundance in stars of the outer galactic disk. IV.

- Description:
- We present radial velocities and chemical abundances for nine stars in the old, distant open clusters Be18, Be21, Be22, Be32, and PWM4. For Be18 and PWM4, these are the first chemical abundance measurements. Combining our data with literature results produces a compilation of some 68 chemical abundance measurements in 49 unique clusters. For this combined sample, we study the chemical abundances of open clusters as a function of distance, age, and metallicity. We confirm that the metallicity gradient in the outer disk is flatter than the gradient in the vicinity of the solar neighborhood. We also confirm that the open clusters in the outer disk are metal-poor with enhancements in the ratios [{alpha}/Fe] and perhaps [Eu/Fe]. All elements show negligible or small trends between [X/Fe] and distance (<0.02dex/kpc), but for some elements, there is a hint that the local (R_GC_<13kpc) and distant (R_GC_>13kpc) samples may have different trends with distance. There is no evidence for significant abundance trends versus age (<0.04dex/Gyr). We measure the linear relation between [X/Fe] and metallicity, [Fe/H], and find that the scatter about the mean trend is comparable to the measurement uncertainties. Comparison with solar neighborhood field giants shows that the open clusters share similar abundance ratios [X/Fe] at a given metallicity. While the flattening of the metallicity gradient and enhanced [{alpha}/Fe] ratios in the outer disk suggest a chemical enrichment history different from that of the solar neighborhood, we echo the sentiments expressed by Friel et al. that definitive conclusions await homogeneous analyses of larger samples of stars in larger numbers of clusters. Arguably, our understanding of the evolution of the outer disk from open clusters is currently limited by systematic abundance differences between various studies.

- Description:
- We present measurements of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 388 radial velocity member stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), a satellite of the Milky Way (MW). This is the largest sample of individual {alpha} element (Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti) abundance measurements in any single dSph. The measurements are made from Keck/Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrometer medium-resolution spectra (6400-9000{AA}, R~6500). Based on comparisons to published high-resolution (R>~20000) spectroscopic measurements, our measurements have uncertainties of {alpha}[Fe/H]=0.14 and {alpha}[{alpha}/Fe]=0.13. We have discovered one star with [Fe/H]=-3.80+/-0.28, which is the most metal-poor star known anywhere except the MW halo, but high-resolution spectroscopy is needed to measure this star's detailed abundances.

- Description:
- We used three sets of high-resolution spectra acquired with the multifiber facility FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory to investigate the chemical and kinematical properties of a sample of 42 horizontal branch (HB) stars, 18 blue straggler stars (BSSs), and 86 main-sequence (MS) turnoff (TO) and sub-giant branch stars in the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. We measured rotational velocities and Fe, O, and Mg abundances. All of the unevolved stars in our sample have low rotational velocites (vsin i<10km/s), while the HB stars and BSSs show a broad distribution, with values ranging from 0 to ~70km/s. For HB stars with T<10500K there is a clear temperature-oxygen anticorrelation that can be understood if the star position along the HB is mainly determined by the He content. The hottest BSSs and HB stars (with temperatures T>8200K and T>10500K, respectively) also show significant deviations in their iron abundance with respect to the cluster metallicity (as traced by the unevolved stars, [Fe/H]=-2.12). While similar chemical patterns have already been observed in other hot HB stars, this is the first evidence ever collected for BSSs. We interpret these abundance anomalies as due to the metal radiative levitation, occurring in stars with shallow or no convective envelopes.

- Description:
- We present a technique that applies spectral synthesis to medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS; R~6000) in the red (6300{AA}<{lambda}<9100{AA}) to measure [Fe/H] and [{alpha}/Fe] of individual red giant stars over a wide metallicity range. We apply our technique to 264 red giant stars in seven Galactic globular clusters and demonstrate that it reproduces the metallicities and {alpha}-enhancements derived from high-resolution spectroscopy (HRS). The MRS technique excludes the three CaII triplet lines and instead relies on a plethora of weaker lines. Unlike empirical metallicity estimators, such as the equivalent width of the CaII triplet, the synthetic method presented here is applicable over an arbitrarily wide metallicity range and is independent of assumptions about the {alpha}-enhancement.

- Description:
- We present a catalog of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 2961 stars in eight dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW): Sculptor, Fornax, Leo I, Sextans, Leo II, Canes Venatici I, Ursa Minor, and Draco. For the purposes of validating our measurements, we also observed 445 red giants in MW globular clusters and 21 field red giants in the MW halo. The measurements are based on Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) combined with spectral synthesis. We estimate uncertainties in [Fe/H] by quantifying the dispersion of [Fe/H] measurements in a sample of stars in monometallic globular clusters (GCs). We estimate uncertainties in Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances by comparing to high-resolution spectroscopic abundances of the same stars. For this purpose, a sample of 132 stars with published high-resolution spectroscopy in GCs, the MW halo field, and dwarf galaxies has been observed with MRS. The standard deviations of the differences in [Fe/H] and <[{alpha}/Fe]> (the average of [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe]) between the two samples is 0.15 and 0.16, respectively.

- Description:
- The chemical abundances of large samples of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars can be used to investigate metal-free stellar populations, supernovae, and nucleosynthesis as well as the formation and galactic chemical evolution of the Milky Way and its progenitor halos. However, current progress on the study of EMP stars is being limited by their faint apparent magnitudes. The acquisition of high signal-to-noise spectra for faint EMP stars requires a major telescope time commitment, making the construction of large samples of EMP star abundances prohibitively expensive. We have developed a new, efficient selection that uses only public, all-sky APASS optical, 2MASS near-infrared, and WISE mid-infrared photometry to identify bright metal-poor star candidates through their lack of molecular absorption near 4.6 microns.

Our analysis reveals a distribution of C abundances similar to that found among the subgiants, implying little change in the compositions of the M13 stars at least through the main-sequence turnoff. We presume these differences to be the result of some process operating early in the cluster history. Additional spectra of previously studied bright M13 giants have been obtained with the 5m Hale Telescope.

- Description:
- We present the first measure of Fe and Na abundances in NGC 6362, a low-mass globular cluster (GC) where first- and second-generation stars are fully spatially mixed. A total of 160 member stars (along the red giant branch (RGB) and the red horizontal branch (RHB)) were observed with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. We find that the cluster has an iron abundance of [Fe/H]=-1.09+/-0.01dex, without evidence of intrinsic dispersion. On the other hand, the [Na/Fe] distribution turns out to be intrinsically broad and bimodal. The Na-poor and Na-rich stars populate, respectively, the bluest and the reddest RGBs detected in the color-magnitude diagrams including the U filter. The RGB is composed of a mixture of first- and second-generation stars in a similar proportion, while almost all the RHB stars belong to the first cluster generation. To date, NGC 6362 is the least massive GC where both the photometric and spectroscopic signatures of multiple populations have been detected.

- Description:
- We present radial velocities and Fe and Al abundances for 180 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega} Cen). The majority of our data lie in the range 11.0<V<13.5, which covers the RGB from about 1mag above the horizontal branch to the RGB tip. The selection procedures are biased toward preferentially observing the more metal-poor and luminous stars of {omega} Cen. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution spectra (R~13000) obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. Our results are in agreement with previous studies as we find at least four different metallicity populations with [Fe/H]=-1.75, -1.45, -1.05, and -0.75, with a full range of -2.20<~[Fe/H]<~-0.70. Results seem to fit in the adopted scheme that star formation occurred in {omega} Cen over >1Gyr.

- Description:
- We present abundances of several light, {alpha}, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements for 66 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega} Cen). Our observations lie in the range 12.0<V<13.5 and focus on the intermediate and metal-rich RGBs. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R~18000) spectra obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. Combining these data with previous work, we find that there are at least four peaks in the metallicity distribution function at [Fe/H]=-1.75, -1.45, -1.05, and -0.75, which correspond to about 55%, 30%, 10%, and 5% of our sample, respectively. We conclude that the metal-rich population must be at least 1-2Gyr younger than the metal-poor stars, owing to the long timescales needed for strong s-process enrichment and the development of a large contingent of mass transfer binaries.

- Abundances of RGs in Galactic globular clusters
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/157/154
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- Among stars in Galactic globular clusters the carbon abundance tends to decrease with increasing luminosity on the upper red giant branch, particularly within the lowest metallicity clusters. While such a phenomena is not predicted by canonical models of stellar interiors and evolution, it is widely held to be the result of some extra mixing operating during red giant branch ascent which transports material exposed to the CN(O)-cycle across the radiative zone in the stellar interior and into the base of the convective envelope, whereupon it is brought rapidly to the stellar surface. Here we present measurements of [C/Fe] abundances among 67 red giants in 19 globular clusters within the Milky Way. Building on the work of Martell et al. (2008AJ....136.2522M), we have concentrated on giants with absolute magnitudes of M_V_~-1.5 within clusters encompassing a range of metallicity (-2.4<[Fe/H]<-0.3). The Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) 4 m and Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) 4.1 m telescopes were used to obtain spectra covering the {lambda}4300 CH and {lambda}3883 CN bands. The CH absorption features in these spectra have been analyzed via synthetic spectra in order to obtain [C/Fe] abundances. These abundances and the luminosities of the observed stars were used to infer the rate at which C abundances change with time during upper red giant branch evolution (i.e., the mixing efficiency). By establishing rates over a range of metallicity, the dependence of deep mixing on metallicity is explored. We find that the inferred carbon depletion rate decreases as a function of metallicity, although our results are dependent on the initial [C/Fe] composition assumed for each star.

- Description:
- Sr, Y, Zr, and Ce abundances are derived for the sample of 74 cool dwarfs and subgiants with the iron abundance [Fe/H] ranged between -2.43 and 0.25. The results are based on LTE (Y, Zr and Ce) and non-LTE (Sr) line formation and line profile analysis of high resolution (40000 and 60000) spectra that have a typical S/N of 50-200. The Zr/Y, Sr/Y, and Sr/Zr ratios in the halo stars form nearly a plateau over the wide metallicity range, -2.43<=[Fe/H]<=0.90, indicating a common origin of Sr, Y, and Zr at the epoch of the halo formation. We find a steep decline of [Zr/Y] in the thick disk stars with increasing Ba abundance. This suggests the reduction of the production rate of Zr compared to that for Y at the active phase of the thick disk formation. The halo and thick disk stars reveal an overabundance of Zr relative to barium that grows with decreasing Ba abundance. There is a clear correlation of the [Zr/Ba] and [Eu/Ba] abundance ratios. Our observational findings for the halo and thick disk do not support the Galaxy chemical evolution models available in the literature and require to improve their predictions. The thin disk stars reveal, on average, solar abundance ratios for (Y,Zr)/Fe, (Y,Zr)/Ba, and Zr/Y. We note a slight decline of Zr/Ba and Zr/Y in these stars with increasing Ba abundance. Our results favour a dominance of the asymptotic giant branch stars in the heavy element enrichment of the interstellar gas over the epoch of the thin disk existence, in agreement with the theory of the main s-process nucleosynthesis.

Both Bootes I and Segue 1 have significant abundance dispersions in iron and carbon. Bootes I has a mean abundance of [Fe/H]=-2.55+/-0.11 with an [Fe/H] dispersion of {sigma}=0.37+/-0.08, and abundance spreads of {Delta}[Fe/H]=1.7 and {Delta}[C/H]=1.5. Segue 1 has a mean of [Fe/H]=-2.7+/-0.4 with [Fe/H] dispersion of {sigma}=0.7+/-0.3, and abundances spreads of {Delta}[Fe/H]=1.6 and {Delta}[C/H]=1.2. Moreover, Segue 1 has a radial-velocity member at four half-light radii that is extremely metal-poor and carbon-rich, with [Fe/H]=-3.5, and [C/Fe]=+2.3. Modulo an unlikely non-member contamination, the [Fe/H] abundance dispersion confirms Segue 1 as the least-luminous ultra-faint dwarf galaxy known.

- The ages of individual Red Giant Branch stars can range from 1Gyr old to the age of the Universe, and it is believed that the abundances of most chemical elements in their photospheres remain unchanged with time (those that are not affected by the first dredge-up). This means that they trace the interstellar medium in the galaxy at the time the star formed, and hence the chemical enrichment history of the galaxy. Colour-Magnitude Diagram analysis has shown the Carina dwarf spheroidal to have had an unusually episodic star formation history and this is expected to be reflected in the abundances of different chemical elements.

- Description:
- Recent observations have shown that a growing number of the most massive Galactic globular clusters contain multiple populations of stars with different [Fe/H] and neutron-capture element abundances. NGC 6273 has only recently been recognized as a member of this "iron-complex" cluster class, and we provide here a chemical and kinematic analysis of >300 red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch member stars using high-resolution spectra obtained with the Magellan-M2FS and VLT-FLAMES instruments. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that NGC 6273 possesses an intrinsic metallicity spread that ranges from about [Fe/H]=-2 to -1 dex, and may include at least three populations with different [Fe/H] values. The three populations identified here contain separate first (Na/Al-poor) and second (Na/Al-rich) generation stars, but a Mg-Al anti-correlation may only be present in stars with [Fe/H]>~-1.65. The strong correlation between [La/Eu] and [Fe/H] suggests that the s-process must have dominated the heavy element enrichment at higher metallicities. A small group of stars with low [{alpha}/Fe] is identified and may have been accreted from a former surrounding field star population. The cluster's large abundance variations are coupled with a complex, extended, and multimodal blue horizontal branch (HB). The HB morphology and chemical abundances suggest that NGC 6273 may have an origin that is similar to {omega} Cen and M54.

- Description:
- NGC 6229 is a relatively massive outer halo globular cluster that is primarily known for exhibiting a peculiar bimodal horizontal branch morphology. Given the paucity of spectroscopic data on this cluster, we present a detailed chemical composition analysis of 11 red giant branch members based on high resolution (R~38000), high S/N (>100) spectra obtained with the MMT-Hectochelle instrument. We find the cluster to have a mean heliocentric radial velocity of -138.1_-1.0_^+1.0^ km/s, a small dispersion of 3.8_-0.7_^+1.0^ km/s, and a relatively low (M/L_V_)_{sun}_=0.82_-0.28_^+0.49^. The cluster is moderately metal-poor with <[Fe/H]>=-1.13 dex and a modest dispersion of 0.06 dex. However, 18% (2/11) of the stars in our sample have strongly enhanced [La,Nd/Fe] ratios that are correlated with a small (~0.05 dex) increase in [Fe/H]. NGC 6229 shares several chemical signatures with M75, NGC 1851, and the intermediate metallicity populations of {omega} Cen, which lead us to conclude that NGC 6229 is a lower mass iron-complex cluster. The light elements exhibit the classical (anti-)correlations that extend up to Si, but the cluster possesses a large gap in the O-Na plane that separates first and second generation stars. NGC 6229 also has unusually low [Na,Al/Fe] abundances that are consistent with an accretion origin. A comparison with M54 and other Sagittarius clusters suggests that NGC 6229 could also be the remnant core of a former dwarf spheroidal galaxy.

- Description:
- The Hubble Ultra Deep field (HUDF) is the deepest region ever observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. With the main objective of unveiling the nature of galaxies up to z~7-8, the observing and reduction strategy have focused on the properties of small and unresolved objects, rather than the outskirts of the largest objects, which are usually over-subtracted. We aim to create a new set of WFC3 IR mosaics of the HUDF using novel techniques to preserve the properties of the low surface brightness regions. We created ABYSS a pipeline that optimises the estimate and modelling of low-level systematic effects to obtain a robust background subtraction. We have improved four key points in the reduction: 1) creation of new absolute sky flat fields, 2) extended persistence models, 3) dedicated sky background subtraction and 4) robust co-adding. The new mosaics successfully recover the low surface brightness structure removed on the previous HUDF published reductions. The amount of light recovered with a mean surface brightness dimmer than mu=26mag/arcsec^2^ is equivalent to a m=19 mag source when compared to the XDF and a m=20mag compared to the HUDF12. We present a set of techniques to reduce ultra-deep images (mu>32.5mag/arcsec^2^, 3 sigma in 10x10 arcsec boxes), that successfully allow to detect the low surface brightness structure of extended sources on ultra deep surveys. The developed procedures are applicable to HST, JWST, EUCLID and many other space and ground-based observatories. We made the final ABYSS WFC3 IR HUDF mosaics publicly available at http://www.iac.es/proyecto/abyss/.

- A catalog of cool dwarf targets for the TESS
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/155/180
- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present a catalog of cool dwarf targets (V-J>2.7, T_eff_~<4000 K) and their stellar properties for the upcoming Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), for the purpose of determining which cool dwarfs should be observed using two minute observations. TESS has the opportunity to search tens of thousands of nearby, cool, late K- and M-type dwarfs for transiting exoplanets, an order of magnitude more than current or previous transiting exoplanet surveys, such as Kepler, K2, and ground-based programs. This necessitates a new approach to choosing cool dwarf targets. Cool dwarfs are chosen by collating parallax and proper motion catalogs from the literature and subjecting them to a variety of selection criteria. We calculate stellar parameters and TESS magnitudes using the best possible relations from the literature while maintaining uniformity of methods for the sake of reproducibility. We estimate the expected planet yield from TESS observations using statistical results from the Kepler mission, and use these results to choose the best targets for two minute observations, optimizing for small planets for which masses can conceivably be measured using follow-up Doppler spectroscopy by current and future Doppler spectrometers. The catalog is available in machine readable format and is incorporated into the TESS Input Catalog and TESS Candidate Target List until a more complete and accurate cool dwarf catalog identified by ESA's Gaia mission can be incorporated.

- A Catalog of Edge-on Disk Galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/445/765
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Spiral galaxies range from bulge-dominated early-type galaxies to late types with little or no bulge. Cosmological models do not predict the formation of disk-dominated, essentially bulgeless galaxies, yet these objects exist. A particularly striking and poorly understood example of bulgeless galaxies are flat or superthin galaxies with large axis ratios. We therefore embarked on a study aimed at a better understanding of these enigmatic objects, starting by compiling a statistically meaningful sample with well-defined properties. The disk axis ratios can be most easily measured when galaxies are seen edge-on. We used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in order to identify edge-on galaxies with disks in a uniform, reproducible, automated fashion. In the five-color photometric database of the SDSS Data Release 1 (DR1, http://www.sdss.org/dr1) (2099 deg^2) we identified 3169 edge-on disk galaxies, which we subdivided into disk galaxies with bulge, intermediate types, and simple disk galaxies without any obvious bulge component. We subdivided these types further into subclasses: Sa(f), Sb(f), Sc(f), Scd(f), Sd(f), Irr(f), where the (f) indicates that these galaxies are seen edge-on. Here we present our selection algorithm and the resulting catalogs of the 3169 edge-on disk galaxies including the photometric, morphological, and structural parameters of our targets. A number of incompleteness effects affect our catalog, but it contains almost a factor of four more bulgeless galaxies with prominent simple disks (flat galaxies) within the area covered here than optical previous catalogs, which were based on the visual selection from photographic plates (Karachentsev et al. 1999, see Cat. VII/219). We find that approximately 15% of the edge-on disk galaxies in our catalog are flat galaxies, demonstrating that these galaxies are fairly common, especially among intermediate- mass star-forming galaxies. Bulgeless disks account for roughly one third of our galaxies when also puffy disks and edge-on irregulars are included. Our catalog provides a uniform database for a multitude of follow-up studies of bulgeless galaxies in order to constrain their intrinsic and environmental properties and their evolutionary status.

- A catalog of galaxies in direction of Perseus
- Short Name:

- Date:

- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present a catalog of 5437 morphologically classified sources in the direction of the Perseus galaxy cluster core, among them 496 early-type low-mass galaxy candidates. The catalog is primarily based on V-band imaging data acquired with the William Herschel Telescope, which we used to conduct automated source detection and derive photometry. We additionally reduced archival Subaru multiband imaging data in order to measure aperture colors and perform a morphological classification, benefiting from 0.5" seeing conditions in the r-band data. Based on morphological and color properties, we extracted a sample of early-type low-mass galaxy candidates with absolute V-band magnitudes in the range of -10 to -20mag. In the color-magnitude diagram, the galaxies are located where the red sequence for early-type cluster galaxies is expected, and they lie on the literature relation between absolute magnitude and Sersic index. We classified the early-type dwarf candidates into nucleated and nonnucleated galaxies. For the faint candidates, we found a trend of increasing nucleation fraction toward brighter luminosity or higher surface brightness, similar to what is observed in other nearby galaxy clusters. We morphologically classified the remaining sources as likely background elliptical galaxies, late-type galaxies, edge-on disk galaxies, and likely merging systems and discussed the expected contamination fraction through non-early-type cluster galaxies in the magnitude-size surface brightness parameter space. Our catalog reaches its 50% completeness limit at an absolute V-band luminosity of -12mag and a V-band surface brightness of 26mag/arcsec^2^. This makes it the largest and deepest catalog with coherent coverage compared to previous imaging studies of the Perseus cluster.

- Short Name:

- Description:
- We present a HI optical catalog of ~30000 galaxies based on the 100% complete Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey combined with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our goal is to facilitate the public use of the completed ALFALFA catalog by providing carefully determined matches to SDSS counterparts, including matches for ~10000 galaxies that do not have SDSS spectra. These identifications can provide a basis for further crossmatching with other surveys using SDSS photometric IDs as a reference point. We derive absolute magnitudes and stellar masses for each galaxy using optical colors combined with an internal reddening correction designed for small- and intermediate-mass galaxies with active star formation. We also provide measures of stellar masses and star formation rates based on infrared and/or ultraviolet photometry for galaxies that are detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and/or the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Finally, we compare the galaxy population in the ALFALFA-SDSS sample with the populations in several other publicly available galaxy catalogs and confirm that ALFALFA galaxies typically have lower masses and bluer colors.

- Description:
- We present a catalog of 416 extended, resolved, disk and ringlike objects as detected in the MIPSGAL 24um survey of the Galactic plane. This catalog is the result of a search in the MIPSGAL image data for generally circularly symmetric, extended "bubbles" without prior knowledge or expectation of their physical nature. Most of the objects have no extended counterpart at 8um or 70um, with less than 20% detections at each wavelength. For the 54 objects with central point sources, the sources are nearly always seen in all Infrared Array Camera bands. About 70 objects (16%) have been previously identified, with another 35 listed as Infrared Astronomical Satellite sources.

- A catalog of outer ejecta knots in Cas A
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/179/195
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Hubble Space Telescope images of the core-collapse supernova remnant Cassiopeia A are used to identify high-velocity knots of ejecta located outside the remnant's main emission shell of expanding debris. These ejecta fragments are found near or ahead of the remnant's forward shock front and mostly lie from 120" to 300" in radial distance from the remnant's center of expansion. Filter flux ratios when correlated with published spectra show that these knots can be divided into three emission classes: (1) knots dominated by [NII] {lambda}6548,{lambda}6583 emissions, (2) knots dominated by [OII] {lambda}7319, {lambda}7330 emissions, and (3) knots displaying filter flux ratios suggestive of [SII], [OII], and [ArIII] {lambda}7135 emission line strengths similar to the "fast-moving knots" (FMKs) found in the remnant's bright main shell. Of 1825 knots identified, 444 are strong [NII] emission knots, 192 are strong [OII] emission knots, and 1189 are FMK-like knots. In terms of location around the remnant, 972, 207, and 646 knots are found in the remnant's northeast jet, southwest jet, and non-jet regions, respectively. Assuming a distance of 3.4kpc, derived knot transverse velocities based on proper motion measurements spanning a 9 month interval indicate maximum transverse expansion velocities for these three knot classes of 14500, 13500, and 11500km/s, respectively. We present a catalog of these outlying ejecta clumps comprising finding charts, epoch 2004.2 knot positions, proper motions, photometric filter fluxes, and estimated knot emission type, along with cross-references to previous knot identifications and data. This compilation represents a nearly tenfold increase in the number of outlying, high-velocity ejecta knots identified around the Cassiopeia A remnant.

- Description:
- I present a catalog of point-source objects toward NGC 1333, resolving a wide variety of confusion about source names (and occasionally positions) in the literature. I incorporate data from optical to radio wavelengths, but focus most of the effort on being complete and accurate from J (1.25{mu}m) to 24{mu}m. The catalog encompasses 52^{deg}^<R.A.<52.5{deg} and 31{deg}<decl.<31.6{deg}. Cross-identifications include those from more than 25 papers and catalogs from 1994 to 2014, primarily those in wide use as origins of nomenclature. Gaps in our knowledge are identified, with the most important being a lack of spectroscopy for spectral types or even confirmation of youth and/or cluster membership. I fit a slope to the spectral energy distribution (SED) between 2 and 24{mu}m for the members (and candidate members) to obtain an SED classification, and I compare the resulting classes to those for the same sources in the literature, and for an SED fit between 2 and 8{mu}m. While there are certainly differences, for the majority of the sources, there is good agreement.

- Short Name:

- Description:
- We present a catalog of nearby (z<=0.5) quasars with significant features of post-starburst stellar populations in their optical spectra: so-called post-starburst quasars, or PSQs. After carefully decomposing spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) Quasar Catalog into quasar and host-galaxy components, we derive a sample of 208 PSQs. Their host-galaxy components have strong H{delta} absorption (EW>=6{AA}) indicating a significant contribution of an intermediate-aged stellar population formed in a burst of star formation within the past 1Gyr, which makes them potentially useful for studying the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies.

- Description:
- Spectra, positions, magnitudes and colours are presented for 1400 faint (B<~21mag) stellar objects identified in a complete, ultraviolet-excess (UVX) survey. The objects were selected from COSMOS machine measurements of UK Schmidt U and J plates and observed with the Fibre Optic Coupled Aperture Plate (FOCAP) system at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). In total, 420 QSOs were identified, of which nine belong to the broad absorption line (BAL) class of QSOs. A further 57 galaxies with narrow emission lines were found. Halo subdwarfs from the vast majority (~90 per cent) of the 824 galactic stars identified in this survey; the remaining galactic stars are comprised principally of hot white dwarfs (42 objects) and horizontal branch stars (nine objects). Updated versions of the QSO number-magnitude relation and luminosity function derived from this survey are also presented in this paper.

- Accretion history of massive stars
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/496/3482
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The mass growth of protostars is a central element to the determination of fundamental stellar population properties such as the initial mass function. Constraining the accretion history of individual protostars is therefore an important aspect of star formation research. The goal of the study presented here is to determine whether high-mass (proto)stars gain their mass from a compact (<0.1pc) fixed-mass reservoir of gas, often referred to as dense cores, in which they are embedded, or whether the mass growth of high-mass stars is governed by the dynamical evolution of the parsec-scale clump that typically surrounds them. To achieve this goal, we performed a 350micron continuum mapping of 11 infrared dark clouds, along side some of their neighbouring clumps, with the ArTeMiS camera on APEX. By identifying about 200 compact ArTeMiS sources, and matching them with Herschel Hi-GAL 70micron sources, we have been able to produce mass vs. temperature diagrams. We compare the nature (i.e. starless or protostellar) and location of the ArTeMiS sources in these diagrams with modelled evolutionary tracks of both core-fed and clump-fed accretion scenarios. We argue that the latter provide a better agreement with the observed distribution of high-mass star-forming cores. However, a robust and definitive conclusion on the question of the accretion history of high-mass stars requires larger number statistics.

- Accretion in disks in Cep OB2
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/710/597
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present accretion rates for a large number of solar-type stars in the Cep OB2 region, based on U-band observations. Our study comprises 95 members of the ~4Myr old cluster Tr 37 (including 20 "transition" objects (TOs)), as well as the only classical T Tauri star (CTTS) in the ~12Myr old cluster NGC 7160. The stars show different disk morphologies, with the majority of them having evolved and flattened disks. The typical accretion rates are about 1 order of magnitude lower than in regions aged 1-2Myr, and we find no strong correlation between disk morphology and accretion rates. Although half of the TOs are not accreting, the median accretion rates of normal CTTS and accreting "transition" disks are similar (~3x10^-9^ and 2x10^-9^M_{sun}_/yr, respectively). Comparison with other regions suggests that the TOs observed at different ages do not necessarily represent the same type of objects, which is consistent with the fact that the different processes that can lead to reduced IR excess/inner disk clearing (e.g., binarity, dust coagulation/settling, photoevaporation, giant planet formation) do not operate on the same timescales.

- Accretion luminosities of young stars from Pf{beta}
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/769/21
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In this work, we introduce the use of HI Pfund {beta} (Pf{beta}; 4.6538{mu}m) as a tracer of mass accretion from protoplanetary disks onto young stars. Pf{beta} was serendipitously observed in NIRSPEC and CRIRES surveys of CO fundamental emission, amounting to a sample size of 120 young stars with detected Pf{beta} emission. Using a subsample of disks with previously measured accretion luminosities, we show that Pf{beta} line luminosity is well correlated with accretion luminosity over a range of at least three orders of magnitude. We use this correlation to derive accretion luminosities for all 120 targets, 65 of which are previously unreported in the literature. The conversion from accretion luminosity to accretion rate is limited by the availability of stellar mass and radius measurements; nevertheless, we also report accretion rates for 67 targets, 16 previously unmeasured. Our large sample size and our ability to probe high extinction values allow for relatively unbiased comparisons between different types of disks.

- Accretion-rotation connection in NGC 2264
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/599/A23
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- The low spin rates measured for solar-type stars at an age of a few Myr (~10% of the break-up velocity) indicate that some mechanism of angular momentum regulation must be at play in the early pre-main sequence. This may be associated with magnetospheric accretion and star-disk interaction, as suggested by observations that disk-bearing objects (CTTS) are slower rotators than diskless sources (WTTS) in young star clusters. We characterize the rotation properties for members of the star-forming region NGC 2264 (~3Myr) as a function of mass, and investigate the accretion-rotation connection at an age where about 50% of the stars have already lost their disks. We examined a sample of 500 cluster members (40% with disks, 60% without disks), distributed in mass between ~0.15 and 2M_{sun}_, whose photometric variations were monitored in the optical for 38 consecutive days with the CoRoT space observatory. Light curves were analyzed for periodicity using three different techniques: the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, the autocorrelation function and the string-length method. Periods were searched in the range between 0.17-days (i.e., 4h, twice the data sampling adopted) and 19-days (half the total time span). Period detections were confirmed using a variety of statistical tools (false alarm probability, Q-statistics), as well as visual inspection of the direct and phase-folded light curves.

- AC114 galaxy cluster dynamical analysis

- Description:
- We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster AC114 based on a catalogue of 524 velocities. Of these, 169 (32 percent) are newly obtained at European Southern Observatory (Chile) with the Very Large Telescope and the VIsible MultiObject spectrograph. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the measured velocities is discussed. Dynamical properties of the cluster are derived. We obtain an improved mean redshift value z=0.31665+/-0.0008 and velocity dispersion {sigma}=1893^+73^_-82_km/s. A large velocity dispersion within the core radius and the shape of the infall pattern suggests that this part of the cluster is in a radial phase of relaxation with a very elongated radial filament spanning 12000km/s. A radial foreground structure is detected within the central 0.5h^-1^Mpc radius, recognizable as a redshift group at the same central redshift value. We analyse the colour distribution for this archetype Butcher-Oemler galaxy cluster and identify the separate red and blue galaxy sequences. The latter subset contains 44 percent of confirmed members of the cluster, reaching magnitudes as faint as R_f_=21.1 (1.0mag fainter than previous studies). We derive a mass M_200_=(4.3+/-0.7)x10^15^M_{sun}_h^-1^. In a subsequent paper, we will utilize the spectral data presented here to explore the mass-metallicity relation for this intermediate redshift cluster.

- Description:
- I report the results of a 60ks X-ray observation of the L1251 dark cloud in Cepheus, which was acquired with the ACIS-I camera on board the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Forty-three compact X-ray sources were detected. The field of view was centered on the position of IRAS 22376+7455, an embedded Class 0/I protostar that is closely associated with the bright CO emission core, L1251B-Core E. A very intense impulsive X-ray flare was observed from a location within the formal error ellipse of the IRAS source and in close proximity (within <~1") to a thermal continuum radio source, VLA 3. Given their small spatial offsets, the radio, far-infrared, and X-ray objects appear to be identical and consequently the likely origin and driving source of high-velocity gas flows that are observed in L1251B.

We analyze a deep, 100ks long, Chandra ACIS observation covering a 17'x17' field in NGC 2264. The preferential detection in X-rays of low-mass PMS stars gives strong indications of their membership. We study X-ray activity as a function of stellar and circumstellar characteristics by correlating the X-ray luminosities, temperatures, and absorptions with optical and near-infrared data from the literature.

- Ackermann red stars
- Short Name:
- II/260
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In the late 1960s Gerhard Ackermann published two lists of extremely red stars (1968ZA.....69..130A and 1970A&A.....8..315A), including what appeared to be reliable spectral classifications for a few hundred stars. The two published papers provide details of the observing and analysis, made between June and October 1968 at the Heidelberg observatory with the 25cm f/3.6 Schmidt camera together with a 10-degree UBK7 prism yielding a dispersion of 3500 {AA}/mm at the atmospheric A band (7700{AA}). Exposures on ammonia-hypersensitized Kodak I-N emulsion + RG665 filter were obtained along with direct plates on I-N emulsion as well as 103a-E + OG550, totalling 101 exposures in all. The spectra were classified by following the precepts of Cameron & Nassau (1955ApJ...122..177C) and Nassau & Velghe (1964ApJ...139..190N). Ackermann initiated photoelectric observations at I and K, but obviously the Heidelberg weather was not conducive to pursuing this. Because the calibration of the photometry on the direct plates was by necessity rather crude, Ackermann's photometric results are not reported here -- the procedures used were sufficient to identify the reddest stars, but not for much else. Approximate V magnitudes were added for all the stars -- for the most part these are merely averages of the photo-blue and -red magnitudes in both GSC-2.2 and USNO-B1.0, but their zero-point and scale should be reliable at the few-tenths magnitude level in this range. Coordinates were drawn from either UCAC2 or 2MASS depending mainly on Declination, since UCAC2 extends only to about +40 Dec in this area. The UCAC2 positions should be good to better than 0.1", and those from 2MASS to 0.2". In a few cases, such as gross overexposure in 2MASS, positions are from various Schmidt survey catalogues, as indicated with each entry. The first 13 stars of the catalog come from the concluding volume of the ZA paper; in the 1970 paper, Ackermann refers to these stars using the acronym HDK, which is adopted here. The published table gave rather rough arcminute-precision positions (for equinox 1965). Star 6 was recovered 1 degree east of the nominal place, and identified with the variable star WX CMi. Along with the positions and IDs, the table shows V magnitudes and the spectral types given in the original paper. Some of the stars are within the region covered by the ASAS-3 survey, so reliable V magnitudes are available along with beautiful lightcurves. Ackermann's second much longer list contains rough photometry from the POSS-I prints for some 400 very red stars in the Cygnus starcloud, and for 254 of these spectral types were also determined. The stars without spectral classifications comprise a diverse group including both red/reddened late-type stars and greatly obscured hotter stars, but no real astrophysical information is given for any of them beyond sheer redness -- these stars are omitted from the catalog. In consultation with Prof Ackermann, the following changes have been made to the spectral types: for stars shown in the original table with a hyphen between two types (e.g. M5-M6), this was to show that the type was uncertain to that degree (i.e. M5 or M6), for which the 'slash' notation of Nancy Houk was preferred, and thus M5-M6 becomes M5/6. One star, 78-0-144, exhibited a range in types, and it is shown as M7-M9. Ackermann also indicated a number of stars as being of very-late type with VO present (separable from the A-band), but where the star was too faint to classify accurately. He agrees these are likely to be in the range M7 to M9, and again these are shown in the slash-style notation as M7/9:, with the colon added to indicate uncertainty since the types were not explicit in the original, and sometimes a question mark for those already marked as uncertain in the original. These changes were made so that machine parsing schemes will be better able to handle the classifications.

- Description:
- Optical spectroscopy of 93 galaxies, 60 projected in the direction of Abell 1367, 21 onto the Coma cluster and 12 on Virgo, is reported. The targets were selected because they were detected in previous H{alpha}, UV or r' surveys. The present observations bring to 100% the redshift completeness of H{alpha} selected galaxies in the Coma region and to 75% in Abell 1367. All observed galaxies except one show H{alpha} emission and belong to the clusters. This confirms previous determinations of the H{alpha} luminosity function of the two clusters that were based on the assumption that all H{alpha} detected galaxies were cluster members. Using the newly obtained data we re-determine the UV luminosity function of Coma and we compute for the first time the UV luminosity function of A1367.

- Description:
- We probed stellar X-ray activity over a wide range of stellar parameters, using Chandra and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) data. We measured the X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity ratio (R_X_=L_X_/L_bol_) for 484 main-sequence stars and found a bimodal distribution for G and K types. We interpret this bimodality as evidence of two subpopulations with different coronal temperatures, which are caused by different coronal heating rates. Using the metallicity and velocity information, we find that both of the subpopulations are mostly located in the thin disk. We find no trend of R_X_ with stellar age for stars older than ~4Gyr; there is a trough in the R_X_ versus age distribution, with the lowest range of R_X_ appearing at ages around 2Gyr. We then examined the correlation between R_X_ and R_H{alpha}_ (proxy of chromospheric activity): we find that the two quantities are well correlated, as found in many earlier studies. Finally, we selected a sample of 12 stars with X-ray flares and studied the light-curve morphology of the flares. The variety of flare profiles and timescales observed in our sample suggests the contribution of different processes of energy release.

- Description:
- A new, complete sample of 14584 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.35 is presented, which are uncovered homogeneously from the complete database of galaxies and quasars observed spectroscopically in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release. The stellar continuum is properly removed for each spectrum with significant host absorption line features, and careful analyses of the emission line spectra, particularly in the H{alpha} and H{beta} wavebands, are carried out. The broad Balmer emission line, particularly H{alpha}, is used to indicate the presence of an AGN. The broad H{alpha} lines have luminosities in a range of 10^38.5^-10^44.3^erg/s, and line widths (FWHMs) of 500-34000km/s. The virial black hole masses, estimated from the broad-line measurements, span a range of 10^5.1^-10^10.3^M_{sun}_, and the Eddington ratios vary from -3.3 to 1.3 in logarithmic scale. Other quantities such as multiwavelength photometric properties and flags denoting peculiar line profiles are also included in this catalog. We describe the construction of this catalog and briefly discuss its properties. The catalog is publicly available online. This homogeneously selected AGN catalog, along with the accurately measured spectral parameters, provides the most updated, largest AGN sample data, which will enable further comprehensive investigations of the properties of the AGN population in the low-redshift universe.

- Description:
- The mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength regime offers several advantages for following the late-time evolution of supernovae (SNe). First, the peaks of the SN spectral energy distributions shift toward longer wavelengths, following the photospheric phase. Second, mid-IR observations suffer less from effects of interstellar extinction. Third, and perhaps most important, the mid-IR traces dust formation and circumstellar interaction at late times (>100 days) after the radioactive ejecta component fades. The Spitzer Space Telescope has provided substantial mid-IR observations of SNe since its launch in 2003. More than 200 SNe have been targeted, but there are even more SNe that have been observed serendipitously. Here we present the results of a comprehensive study based on archival Spitzer/IRAC images of more than 1100 SN positions; from this sample, 119 SNe of various subclasses have been detected, including 45 SNe with previously unpublished mid-IR photometry. The photometry reveals significant amounts of warm dust in some cases. We perform an in-depth analysis to constrain the origin and heating mechanism of the dust, and present the resulting statistics.

- Description:
- The rich information on (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission from distant galaxies in the public Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archive is contained in thousands of inhomogeneous observations from individual PI-led programs. To increase the usability of these data for studies deepening our understanding of galaxy evolution, we have developed automated mining pipelines for the ALMA archive in the COSMOS field (A3COSMOS) that efficiently exploit the available information for large numbers of galaxies across cosmic time and keep the data products in sync with the increasing public ALMA archive: (a) a dedicated ALMA continuum imaging pipeline, (b) two complementary photometry pipelines for both blind source extraction and prior source fitting, (c) a counterpart association pipeline utilizing the multiwavelength data available (including quality assessment based on machine-learning techniques), (d) an assessment of potential (sub)millimeter line contribution to the measured ALMA continuum, and (e) extensive simulations to provide statistical corrections to biases and uncertainties in the ALMA continuum measurements. Application of these tools yields photometry catalogs with ~1000 (sub)millimeter detections (spurious fraction ~8%-12%) from over 1500 individual ALMA continuum images. Combined with ancillary photometric and redshift catalogs and the above quality assessments, we provide robust information on redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate for ~700 galaxies at redshifts 0.5-6 in the COSMOS field (with undetermined selection function). The ALMA photometric measurements and galaxy properties are released publicly within our blind extraction, prior fitting, and galaxy property catalogs, plus the images.

- Description:
- Young, low-mass stars in the solar neighborhood are vital for completing the mass function for nearby, young coeval groups, establishing a more complete census for evolutionary studies, and providing targets for direct-imaging exoplanet and/or disk studies. We present properties derived from high-resolution optical spectra for 336 candidate young nearby, low-mass stars. These include measurements of radial velocities and age diagnostics such as H{alpha} and Li {lambda}6707 equivalent widths. Combining our radial velocities with astrometry from Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345), we provide full 3D kinematics for the entire sample. We combine the measured spectroscopic youth information with additional age diagnostics (e.g., X-ray and UV fluxes, color-magnitude diagram positions) and kinematics to evaluate potential membership in nearby, young moving groups and associations. We identify 77 objects in our sample as bona fide members of 10 different moving groups, 14 of which are completely new members or have had their group membership reassigned. We also reject 44 previously proposed candidate moving group members. Furthermore, we have newly identified or confirmed the youth of numerous additional stars that do not belong to any currently known group and find 69 comoving systems using Gaia DR2 astrometry. We also find evidence that the Carina association is younger than previously thought, with an age similar to the {beta} Pictoris moving group (~22 Myr).

- Description:
- We confirm 66 low-mass stellar and brown dwarf systems (K7-M9) plus 19 visual or spectroscopic companions of the {beta} Pictoris moving group (BPMG). Of these, 41 are new discoveries, increasing the known low-mass members by 45%. We also add four objects to the 14 known with masses predicted to be less than 0.07 M_{sun}_. Our efficient photometric + kinematic selection process identified 104 low-mass candidates, which we observed with ground-based spectroscopy. We collected infrared observations of the latest spectral types (>M5) to search for low-gravity objects. These and all <M5 candidates were observed with high-resolution optical spectrographs to measure the radial velocities and youth indicators, such as lithium absorption and H{alpha} emission, needed to confirm BPMG membership, achieving a 63% confirmation rate. We also compiled the most complete census of BPMG membership, with which we tested the efficiency and false-membership assignments using our selection and confirmation criteria. Using the new census, we assess a group age of 22+/-6 Myr, consistent with past estimates. With the now-densely sampled lithium depletion boundary, we resolve the broadening of the boundary by either an age spread or astrophysical influences on lithium-burning rates. We find that 69% of the now-known members with AFGKM primaries are M stars, nearing the expected value of 75%. However, the new initial mass function for the BPMG shows a deficit of 0.2-0.3 M_{sun}_ stars by a factor of ~2. We expect that the AFGK census of the BPMG is also incomplete, probably due to biases of searches toward the nearest stars.

- Description:

The procedure to select bona fide GC candidates from the full list of detections is based on model-based clustering methods, similar to those adopted for a survey of 100 galaxies in the Virgo cluster, the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. For each detected source, we measure its position, magnitudes in the F475W (~Sloan g) and F850LP (~Sloan z) bandpasses, half-light radii obtained by fitting point-spread function-convolved King models to the observed light distribution, and an estimate of the probability {rho}_GC_ that each cataloged source is a GC. These measurements are presented for 9136 sources, of which 6275 have {rho}_GC_>=0.5, and are thus likely GCs.

- Description:
- We present a measurement of the age distribution of stars residing in spiral disks and dwarf galaxies. We derive a complete star formation history of the ~140Mpc^3^ covered by the volume-limited sample of galaxies in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST). The total star formation rate density history ({rho}_SFR_(t)) is dominated by the large spirals in the volume, although the sample consists mainly of dwarf galaxies. Our {rho}_SFR_(t) shows a factor of ~3 drop at z~2, in approximate agreement with results from other measurement techniques. While our results show that the overall {rho}_SFR_(t) has decreased since z~1, the measured rates during this epoch are higher than those obtained from other measurement techniques. This enhanced recent star formation rate appears to be largely due to an increase in the fraction of star formation contained in low-mass disks at recent times. Finally, our results indicate that despite the differences at recent times, the epoch of formation of ~50% of the stellar mass in dwarf galaxies was similar to that of ~50% of the stellar mass in large spiral galaxies (z>~2), despite the observed galaxy-to-galaxy diversity among the dwarfs.

- Description:
- We present the first results of a large Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) survey of Galactic globular clusters. This Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury project is designed to obtain photometry with S/N (signal-to-noise ratio) >~10 for main-sequence stars with masses >~0.2M_{sun}_ in a sample of globulars using the ACS Wide Field Channel. Here we focus on clusters without previous HST imaging data. These include NGC 5466, NGC 6779, NGC 5053, NGC 6144, Palomar 2, E3, Lynga 7, Palomar 1, and NGC 6366. Our color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) extend reliably from the horizontal branch to as much as 7 mag fainter than the main-sequence turnoff and represent the deepest CMDs published to date for these clusters. Using fiducial sequences for three standard clusters (M92, NGC 6752, and 47 Tuc) with well-known metallicities and distances, we perform main-sequence fitting on the target clusters in order to obtain estimates of their distances and reddenings. These comparisons, along with fitting the cluster main sequences to theoretical isochrones, yield ages for the target clusters. We find that the majority of the clusters have ages that are consistent with the standard clusters at their metallicities. The exceptions are E3, which appears ~2Gyr younger than 47 Tuc, and Pal 1, which could be as much as 8Gyr younger than 47 Tuc.

- Description:
- We present a complete census of RR Lyrae stars in a halo field of the Andromeda galaxy. These deep observations, taken as part of a program to measure the star formation history in the halo, spanned a period of 41 days with sampling on a variety of timescales, enabling the identification of short- and long-period variables. Although the long-period variables cannot be fully characterized within the time span of this program, the enormous advance in sensitivity provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope allows accurate characterization of the RR Lyrae population in this field. We find 29 RRab stars with a mean period of 0.594 days, 25 RRc stars with a mean period of 0.316 days, and one RRd star with a fundamental period of 0.473 days and a first-overtone period of 0.353 days. These 55 RR Lyrae stars imply a specific frequency S_RR_~5.6, which is large given the high mean metallicity of the halo, but not surprising given that these stars arise from the old, metal-poor tail of the distribution.

- Description:
- The ACS Virgo Cluster Survey consists of HST-ACS Advance Camera for Surveys) imaging for 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, observed in the F475W (~SDSS g) and F850LP (~SDSS z) filters. We derive distances for 84 of these galaxies using the method of surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs), present the SBF distance catalog, and use this database to examine the three-dimensional distribution of early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. The SBF distance moduli have a mean (random) measurement error of 0.07mag (0.5Mpc), or roughly 3 times better than previous SBF measurements for Virgo Cluster galaxies. Five galaxies lie at a distance of d~23Mpc and are members of the W' cloud. The remaining 79 galaxies have a narrow distribution around our adopted distance of <d>=16.5+/-0.1 (random mean error) +/-1.1Mpc (systematic). The rms distance scatter of this sample is {sigma}(d)=0.6+/-0.1Mpc, with little or no dependence on morphological type or luminosity class (i.e., 0.7+/-0.1 and 0.5+/-0.1Mpc for the giants and dwarfs, respectively). The back-to-front depth of the cluster measured from our sample of early-type galaxies is 2.4+/-0.4Mpc (i.e., +/-2{sigma} of the intrinsic distance distribution). The M87 (cluster A) and M49 (cluster B) subclusters are found to lie at distances of 16.7+/-0.2 and 16.4+/-0.2Mpc, respectively. There may be a third subcluster associated with M86. A weak correlation between velocity and line-of-sight distance may be a faint echo of the cluster velocity distribution not having yet completely virialized. In three dimensions, Virgo's early-type galaxies appear to define a slightly triaxial distribution, with axis ratios of (1:0.7:0.5). The principal axis of the best-fit ellipsoid is inclined ~20{deg}-40{deg} from the line of sight, while the galaxies belonging to the W' cloud lie on an axis inclined by ~10{deg}-15{deg}.

- Activity and rotation in Praesepe and the Hyades
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/795/161
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Open clusters are collections of stars with a single, well-determined age, and can be used to investigate the connections between angular-momentum evolution and magnetic activity over a star's lifetime. We present the results of a comparative study of the relationship between stellar rotation and activity in two benchmark open clusters: Praesepe and the Hyades. As they have the same age and roughly solar metallicity, these clusters serve as an ideal laboratory for testing the agreement between theoretical and empirical rotation-activity relations at ~600 Myr. We have compiled a sample of 720 spectra - more than half of which are new observations - for 516 high-confidence members of Praesepe; we have also obtained 139 new spectra for 130 high-confidence Hyads. We have also collected rotation periods (P_rot_) for 135 Praesepe members and 87 Hyads. To compare H{alpha} emission, an indicator of chromospheric activity, as a function of color, mass, and Rossby number R_o_, we first calculate an expanded set of {chi} values, with which we can obtain the H{alpha} to bolometric luminosity ratio, L_H{alpha}_/L_bol_, even when spectra are not flux-calibrated and/or stars lack reliable distances. Our {chi} values cover a broader range of stellar masses and colors (roughly equivalent to spectral types from K0 to M9), and exhibit better agreement between independent calculations, than existing values. Unlike previous authors, we find no difference between the two clusters in their H{alpha} equivalent width or L_H{alpha}_/L_bol_ distributions, and therefore take the merged H{alpha} and P_rot_ data to be representative of 600 Myr old stars. Our analysis shows that H{alpha} activity in these stars is saturated for R_O_<=0.11\-0.03_^+0.02^. Above that value activity declines as a power-law with slope {beta}=0.73_-0.12_^+0.16^, before dropping off rapidly at R_o_{approx} 0.4. These data provide a useful anchor for calibrating the age-activity-rotation relation beyond 600 Myr.

- Activity cycles in 3203 Kepler stars
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/603/A52
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In recent years it has been claimed that the length of stellar activity cycles is determined by the stellar rotation rate. It has been observed that the cycle period increases with rotation period along two distinct sequences, known as the active and inactive sequences. In this picture the Sun occupies a solitary position between the two sequences. Whether the Sun might undergo a transitional evolutionary stage is currently under debate. Our goal is to measure cyclic variations of the stellar light curve amplitude and the rotation period using four years of Kepler data. Periodic changes in the light curve amplitude or the stellar rotation period are associated with an underlying activity cycle. Using a recent sample of active stars we compute the rotation period and the variability amplitude for each individual Kepler quarter and search for periodic variations of both time series. To test for periodicity in each stellar time series we consider Lomb-Scargle periodograms and use a selection based on a false alarm probability (FAP). We detect amplitude periodicities in 3203 stars between 0.5-6 years covering rotation periods between 1-40 days. Given our sample size of 23,601 stars and our selection criteria that the FAP is less than 5%, this number is almost three times higher than that expected from pure noise. We do not detect periodicities in the rotation period beyond those expected from noise. Our measurements reveal that the cycle period shows a weak dependence on rotation rate, slightly increasing for longer rotation periods. We further show that the shape of the variability deviates from a pure sine curve, consistent with observations of the solar cycle. The cycle shape does not show a statistically significant dependence on effective temperature. We detect activity cycles in more than 13% of our final sample with a FAP of 5% (calculated by randomly shuffling the measured 90-day variability measurements for each star). Our measurements do not support the existence of distinct sequences in the Prot-Pcyc plane, although there is some evidence for the inactive sequence for rotation periods between 5-25 days. Unfortunately, the total observing time is too short to draw sound conclusions on activity cycles with similar lengths to that of the solar cycle.

The correlations between luminosity and activity reveal the expected inverse activity-brightness correlations for active stars. Strong direct correlations between activity and brightness are not prevalent for the less active solar age stars, but are precision limited.

- Description:
- We present the results of a new study on the relationship between coronal X-ray emission and stellar rotation in late-type main-sequence stars. We have selected a sample of 259 dwarfs in the B-V range 0.5-2.0, including 110 field stars and 149 members of the Pleiades, Hyades, {alpha} Persei, IC 2602 and IC 2391 open clusters. All the stars have been observed with ROSAT, and most of them have photometrically-measured rotation periods available. Our results confirm that two emission regimes exist, one in which the rotation period is a good predictor of the total X-ray luminosity, and the other in which a constant saturated X-ray to bolometric luminosity ratio is attained; we present a quantitative estimate of the critical rotation periods below which stars of different masses (or spectral types) enter the saturated regime.

- Description:
- This is a detailed spectral classification of 96 active galaxies from the Veron-Cetty and Veron catalog (2010, Version 13, Cat. VII/258) of active galaxies and quasars. These objects were identified as radio sources using standard radio catalogs. Those galaxies which had radio sources in at least 6 different radio bands and had been identified spectrally in the SDSS catalog were selected. The types of activity of these were determined using their SDSS spectra. Three diagnostic diagrams and a direct study of the spectra were used for more certain classification. As a result, the classifications of 85% of the objects were changed. The radio sources in different radio bands make it possible to construct the spectral distribution of the energy in the radio range and to compare it with the optical activity types.

- Description:
- In this study we carry out detailed spectral classification of 173 AGN candidates from the Joint HRC/BHRC sample, which is a combination of HRC (Hamburg-ROSAT Catalogue) and BHRC (Byurakan-Hamburg-ROSAT Catalogue). These objects were revealed as optical counterparts for ROSAT X-ray sources, however spectra for 173 of them are given in SDSS without definite spectral classification. We studied these 173 objects using the SDSS spectra and revealed the detailed activity types for them. Three diagnostic diagrams and direct examination of the spectra were used to have more confident classification. We also made identification of these sources in other wavelength ranges and calculated some of their parameters.

- Description:
- We present 24um photometry of the intermediate-age open cluster Praesepe. We assemble a catalog of 193 probable cluster members that are detected in optical databases, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and at 24um, within an area of ~2.47deg^2^. Mid-IR excesses indicating debris disks are found for one early-type and for three solar-type stars. Corrections for sampling statistics yield a 24um excess fraction (debris disk fraction) of 6.5%+/-4.1% for luminous and 1.9%+/-1.2% for solar-type stars. The incidence of excesses is in agreement with the decay trend of debris disks as a function of age observed for other cluster and field stars.

- Description:
- We present a catalogue of 247 photometrically and spectroscopically confirmed fainter classical Be stars (13<r<16) in the direction of the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way (1{deg}<b<+4{deg}, 120{deg}<l<140{deg}). The catalogue consists of 181 IPHAS-selected new classical Be stars, in addition to 66 objects that we studied in our previous work more closely, and three stars identified as classical Be stars in earlier work. This study more than doubles the number known in the region. Photometry spanning 0.6-5um, spectral types, and interstellar reddenings are given for each object. The spectral types were determined from low-resolution spectra ({lambda}/{Delta}_{lambda}~800-2000), to a precision of 1-3 subtypes. The interstellar reddenings are derived from the (r-i) colour, using a method that corrects for circumstellar disc emission. The colour excesses obtained range from E(B-V)=0.3 up to 1.6 a distribution that modestly extends the range reported in the literature for Perseus-Arm open clusters. For around half the sample, the reddenings obtained are compatible with measures of the total sightline Galactic extinction. Many of these are likely to lie well beyond the Perseus Arm.

- We have used the Kitt Peak National Observatory 4m Mayall telescope to image 0.83 square degrees of sky in six fields at high galactic latitude in six filters spanning 3000-10000A to magnitude limits ranging from 22.1 to 23.8. As a first use of this database, we have conducted a multicolor survey for quasars. We discuss various methods of selecting outliers in different color-color diagrams and multicolor space that have been used to identify quasars at all redshifts from their colors alone. We discuss the initial results of our program of spectroscopic identification which has so far resulted in the identification of over 40 faint quasars, including one a z>4, a similar number of compact narrow emission-line galaxies, and a number of unusual and potentially interesting stars. We use these spectroscopic results, along with extensive simulations of quasar spectra, to study the efficiency of our candidate selection procedures. Finally, we compare the number counts of our quasars and quasar candidates to the expected numbers based on previous studies of the quasar luminosity function. The agreement of our observations with these expectations is good in most cases. However, we do estimate that our survey contains more quasars with B<21 and z<2.3 than expected from the results published by Koo & Kron in (1988ApJ...325...92K) and more z>3 quasars than expected from the results published by Warren, Hewett & Osmer in (1994ApJ...421..412W), both at the 3 {sigma} level. Additional spectroscopic observations will be required to confirm or refute these excesses.

- Description:
- We have made spectroscopic identifications of 39 additional quasar candidates from the Deep Multicolor Survey (DMS) of Hall et al. (1996, Cat. <J/ApJ/462/614>). We have identified 9 new quasars with 0.3<z<2.8 and 16.8<B<21.6, all from the group of candidates with ultraviolet excess (UVX). No new quasars with z>3 were found among the observed candidates selected due to their red (B-R) and (V-R) colors. As a result, there are now 55 confirmed quasars in the survey: 42 with 0.3<z<2, nine with 2<z<3, three with 3<z<4, and 1 at z=4.3. One new quasar, DMS 0059-0055, is very bright with B=16.8 and z=0.3, making its detection by our survey very unexpected. Including this new spectroscopy, the results of the DMS are converging with the predicted space densities of other surveys. In particular, we no longer find an excess of quasars with z<2.3 and B<21 in the survey over predictions based on models by Koo & Kron (1988ApJ...325...92K). Also, the excess in the number of quasars seen at z>3 over predictions based on models by Warren et al. (1994ApJ...421..412W) is less than previously suggested. We also demonstrate the success of our quasar color modeling which is important in assessing the completeness of our survey.

- A deep radio survey of Abell 2125. II

- Description:
- Using our extensive radio, optical, near-IR, and X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, we consider the reason for the unusually large number of radio-detected galaxies, mostly found outside the cluster core, in Abell 2125 (z=0.2465, richness class 4). With 20cm VLA data, we detect continuum emission from 90 cluster members. The multiwavelength properties of these galaxies suggest that most of the radio emission is due to an enhanced star formation rate. The recent dynamical study of Miller et al. (2004, Cat. <J/ApJ/613/841>) suggests that A2125 is undergoing a major cluster-cluster merger, with our view within 30{deg} of the merger axis and within 0.2Gyr of core passage. The combination of projection effects and the physical processes at work during this special time in the cluster's evolution seem likely to be responsible for the unusual level of activity we see in the cluster. We argue that tidal effects on individual cluster members, often far from the cluster core, are responsible for the increased star formation. Our results are consistent with the idea that disk galaxies during this phase of a cluster's evolution undergo rapid evolution through a burst of star formation on their way to becoming S0 galaxies.

- Description:
- We present a sample of galaxies in six fields, each of area 2 sq deg, located in the North and South galactic polar caps. Photoelectrically calibrated photographic magnitudes and J-F colors have been determined for 512 galaxies brighter than completeness limits which range from F=16.5 to F=17.2 among the fields. Velocities, with typical accuracies of 150km/s have been obtained for 280 of the brighter galaxies. Using these data and previously published work, we determine the general galaxy luminosity function parameters to be M*_F_=-22.7, {alpha}=-1.25, and the mean visual luminosity density of the universe to be {rho}=2.3x10^8^hL_{sun}_/Mpc^3^. Assuming M/L_v_=300h, this implies {OMEGA}~0.26.

- Adiabatic Mass Loss in Binary Stars. III.

- Description:
- The distinguishing feature of the evolution of close binary stars is the role played by the mass exchange between the component stars. Whether or not the mass transfer is dynamically stable is one of the essential questions in binary evolution. In the limit of extremely rapid mass transfer, the response of a donor star in an interacting binary becomes asymptotically one of adiabatic expansion. We use the adiabatic mass-loss model to systematically survey the thresholds for dynamical timescale mass transfer over the entire span of possible donor star evolutionary states. We also simulate mass-loss process with isentropic envelopes, the specific entropy of which is fixed to be that at the base of the convective envelope, to artificially mimic the effect of such mass loss in superadiabatic surface convection regions, where the adiabatic approximation fails. We illustrate the general adiabatic response of 3.2M{odot} donor stars at different evolutionary stages. We extend our study to a grid of donor stars with different masses (from 0.1 to 100 M{sun} with Z=0.02) and at different evolutionary stages. We proceed to present our criteria for dynamically unstable mass transfer in both tabular and graphical forms. For red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) donors in systems with such mass ratios, they may have convective envelopes deep enough to evolve into common envelopes on a thermal timescale, if the donor star overfills its outer Lagrangian radius. Our results show that the RGB and AGB stars tend to be more stable than previously believed, and this may be helpful to explain the abundance of observed post-AGB binary stars with an orbital period of around 1000 days.

- Ae/Be stars of Magellanic Bridge in JHKs
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/658/358
- Date:

- CDS
- Description:
- We have found Herbig Ae/Be star candidates in the western region of the Magellanic Bridge. Using the near-infrared camera SIRIUS and the 1.4m telescope IRSF, we surveyed ~3.0{deg}x1.3{deg} (24{deg}<~RA<~36{deg}, -75.0{deg}<~DE<~-73.7{deg}) in the J, H, and Ks bands. On the basis of colors and magnitudes, about 200 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates are selected. Considering the contaminations by miscellaneous sources, such as foreground stars and early-type dwarfs in the Magellanic Bridge, we estimate that about 80 (#40%) of the candidates are likely to be Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also found one concentration of the candidates at the young star cluster NGC 796, strongly suggesting the existence of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Magellanic Bridge. This is the first detection of PMS star candidates in the Magellanic Bridge, and if they are genuine PMS stars, this could be direct evidence of recent star formation. However, the estimate of the number of Herbig Ae/Be stars depends on the fraction of classical Be stars, and thus a more precise determination of the Be star fraction or observations to differentiate between the Herbig Ae/Be stars and classical Be stars are required.

- AEGIS-X: Chandra deep survey

- Description:
- We present the EGIS-X survey, a series of deep Chandra ACIS-I observations of the Extended Groth Strip. The survey comprises pointings at eight separate positions, each with nominal exposure of 200ks, covering a total area of approximately 0.67deg^2^ in a strip of length 2 degrees. We describe in detail an updated version of our data reduction and point-source-detection algorithms used to analyze these data. A total of 1325 band-merged sources have been found to a Poisson probability limit of 4x10^-6^, with limiting fluxes of 5.3x10^-21^W/m2 in the soft (0.5-2keV) band and 3.8x10^-19^W/m2 in the hard (2-10keV) band. We present simulations verifying the validity of our source-detection procedure and showing a very small, <1.5%, contamination rate from spurious sources. Optical/NIR counterparts have been identified from the DEEP2, CFHTLS, and Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) surveys of the same region. Using a likelihood ratio method, we find optical counterparts for 76% of our sources, complete to R_AB_=24.1, and, of the 66% of the sources that have IRAC coverage, 94% have a counterpart to a limit of 0.9uJy at 3.6um (m_AB_=23.8). After accounting for (small) positional offsets in the eight Chandra fields, the astrometric accuracy of Chandra positions is found to be 0"8rms; however, this number depends both on the off-axis angle and the number of detected counts for a given source.
