- We present a Chandra study of the deeply embedded Serpens South star-forming region, examining cluster structure and disk properties at the earliest stages. In total, 152 X-ray sources are detected. Combined with Spitzer and 2MASS photometry, 66 X-ray sources are reliably matched to an IR counterpart. We identify 21 class I, 6 flat spectrum, 16 class II, and 18 class III young stars; 5 were unclassified. Eighteen sources were variable in X-rays, 8 exhibiting flare-like emission and one source being periodic. The cluster's X-ray luminosity distance was estimated: the best match was to the nearer distance of 260 pc for the front of the Aquila Rift complex. The ratio of N_H_ to A_K_ is found to be ~0.68x10^22^, similar to that measured in other young low-mass regions, but lower than that measured in the interstellar medium and high-mass clusters (~(1.6-2)x10^22^). We find that the spatial distribution closely follows that of the dense filament from which the stars have formed, with the class II population still strongly associated with the filament. There are four subclusters in the field, with three forming knots in the filament, and a fourth to the west, which may not be associated but may be contributing to the distributed class III population. A high percentage of diskless class IIIs (upper limit 30% of classified X-ray sources) in such a young cluster could indicate that processing of disks is influenced by the cluster environment and is not solely dependent on timescale.

- We report on the results of a systematic study of X-ray flares from low-mass young stellar objects, using two deep exposure Chandra observations of the main region of the {rho} Ophiuchi star-forming cloud. From 195 X-ray sources, including class I-III sources and some young brown dwarfs, we detected a total of 71 X-ray flares.

- We present results of a sensitive 76ks Chandra observation of the young stellar cluster in NGC 2024, lying at a distance of ~415pc in the Orion B giant molecular cloud. Previous infrared observations have shown that this remarkable cluster contains several hundred embedded young stars, most of which are still surrounded by circumstellar disks. Thus, it presents a rare opportunity to study X-ray activity in a large sample of optically invisible protostars and classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) undergoing accretion. Chandra detected 283 X-ray sources, of which 248 were identified with counterparts at other wavelengths, mostly in the near-infrared. Astrometric registration of Chandra images against the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) resulted in positional offsets of ~0.25" near field center, yielding high confidence identifications of infrared counterparts.

- Most massive stars belong to multiple systems, yet the formation process leading to such high multiplicity remain insufficiently understood. To help constrain the different formation scenarios that exist, insights on the low-mass end of the companion mass function of such stars is crucial. However, this is a challenging endeavour as (sub-)solar mass companions at angular separations {rho} below 1" (corresponding to 1000-3000au in nearby young open clusters and OB associations) are difficult to detect due to the large brightness contrast with the central star. With the Carina High-contrast Imaging Project of massive Stars (CHIPS), we aim to obtain statistically significant constraints on the presence and properties of low-mass companions around massive stars at a previously unreachable observing window ({Delta}mag>=10 at {rho}<= 1"). In this second paper in the series, we focus on the Trumpler 14 cluster, which harbours some of the youngest and most massive O-type stars in the Milky Way. We obtained VLT-SPHERE observations of seven O-type objects in Trumpler 14 using the IRDIFS_EXT mode. These allow us to search for companions at separations larger than 0.15" (~360au) and down to magnitude contrast >10 mag in the near-infrared. We used angular and spectral differential imaging along with PSF fitting to detect sources and measure their flux relative to that of the central object. We detected 211 sources with near-infrared magnitude contrast in the range of 2 to 12. The closest companion, at only 0.26", is characterised as a 1.4M_{sun}_ stars with an age of 0.6Myr, in excellent agreement with previous age estimates for Tr14. The mass function peaks at about 0.4M_{sun}_ and presents a dearth of stars in the 0.5 to 0.8M_{sun}_ mass range compared to previous estimates of the initial mass function in Tr14.

- We present an optical study of four 45'x45' fields centered ~0.5{deg} east, west, north, and south of the Orion Nebula Cluster center. We have measured V and I_C_ photometry for ~5000 stars, and U photometry for ~1600 of these. We have obtained spectral classifications for ~300 of the stars with UVI_C_ photometry plus an additional ~200 stars located outside the area of our photometric survey. Dereddened photometry allows us to investigate the evidence for circumstellar accretion disks from excess emission at ultraviolet wavelengths, as well as the mass and age distributions of our sample. We find ~230 active accretion disk candidates and estimate the accretion disk fraction at >~40%. We use the magnitude of the ultraviolet excess to infer disk accretion rates. The mass accretion rate (dM/dt) decreases slowly with age over the limited age range spanned by our data, 1-3Myr, and increases slowly with mass over the limited mass range 0.2-1.2 M_{sun}_.

- We have performed a survey for new members of the Upper Sco association that have circumstellar disks using mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Through optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we have confirmed 185 candidates as likely members of Upper Sco with spectral types ranging from mid-K to M9. They comprise ~36% of the known disk-bearing members of the association. We also have compiled all available mid-infrared photometry from WISE and the Spitzer Space Telescope for the known members of Upper Sco, resulting in a catalog of data for 1608 objects. We have used these data to identify the members that exhibit excess emission from disks and we have classified the evolutionary stages of those disks with criteria similar to those applied in our previous studies of Taurus and Upper Sco. Among 484 members with excesses in at least one band (excluding five Be stars), we classify 296 disks as full, 66 as evolved, 19 as transitional, 22 as evolved or transitional, and 81 as evolved transitional or debris. Many of these disks have not been previously reported, including 129 full disks and 50 disks that are at more advanced evolutionary stages.

- In this paper we present results on the size distribution of circumstellar disks in the Trapezium cluster as measured from HST/WFPC2 data. Direct diameter measurements of a sample of 135 bright proplyds and 14 silhouettes disks suggest that there is a single population of disks well characterized by a power-law distribution with an exponent of -1.9+/-0.3 between disk diameters 100-400AU. For the stellar mass sampled (from late G to late M stars) we find no obvious correlation between disk diameter and stellar mass. We also find that there is no obvious correlation between disk diameter and the projected distance to the ionizing Trapezium OB stars. We estimate that about 40% of the disks in the Trapezium have radius larger than 50AU. We suggest that the origin of the Solar system's (Kuiper belt) outer edge is likely to be due to the star formation environment and disk destruction processes (photo-evaporation, collisions) present in the stellar cluster on which the Sun was probably formed. Finally, we identified a previously unknown proplyd and named it 266-557, following convention.

- We present a study of spectral diagnostics available from optical spectra with R=17000 obtained with the VLT/Giraffe HR15n setup, using observations from the Gaia-ESO Survey, on the {gamma} Vel young cluster, with the purpose of classifying these stars and finding their fundamental parameters. We define several spectroscopic indices, sampling the amplitude of TiO bands, the H{alpha} line core and wings, and temperature- and gravity-sensitive sets of lines, each useful as a Teff or logg indicator over a limited range of stellar spectral types. H{alpha} line indices are also useful as chromospheric activity or accretion indicators. Furthermore, we use all indices to define additional global Teff- and logg-sensitive indices {tau} and {gamma}, valid for the entire range of types in the observed sample.
