- We present Gemini/GMOS-S multi-object spectroscopy of 31 galaxy cluster candidates at redshifts between 0.2 and 1.0 and centered on QSO sight lines taken from Lopez et al. (Paper I, J/ApJ/679/1144). The targets were selected based on the presence of an intervening MgII absorption system at a similar redshift to that of a galaxy cluster candidate lying at a projected distance <2h_71_^-1^Mpc from the QSO sight line (a "photometric hit"). The absorption systems span rest-frame equivalent widths between 0.015 and 2.028{AA}. The general population of our confirmed absorbing galaxies have luminosities L_B_~L_B_^*^ and mean rest-frame colors (R_c_-z') typical of S_cd_ galaxies.

- We describe the first optical survey of absorption systems associated with cluster galaxies at z=0.3-0.9. We have cross-correlated quasars from the third data release of the SDSS (Cat. VII/243) with high-redshift cluster/group candidates from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (Cat. J/ApJS/157/1). We have found 442 quasar-cluster pairs for which the MgII{lambda}2796, 2803 doublet might be detected at a transverse (physical) distance d<2h^-1^_71_Mpc from the cluster centers. To investigate the incidence dN/dz and equivalent width distribution n(W) of MgII systems at cluster redshifts, two statistical samples were drawn out of these pairs: one made of high-resolution spectroscopic quasar observations (46 pairs), and one made of quasars used in MgII searches found in the literature (375 pairs).

- We present a catalogue of 4098 photometrically selected galaxy clusters with a median redshift <z>=0.32 in the 270deg^2^ "Stripe 82" region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), covering the celestial equator in the Southern Galactic Cap (-50{deg}<RA<59{deg}, |DE|<=1.25). Owing to the multi-epoch SDSS coverage of this region, the ugriz photometry is ~2mag deeper than single scans within the main SDSS footprint. We exploit this to detect clusters of galaxies using an algorithm that searches for statistically significant overdensities of galaxies in a Voronoi tessellation of the projected sky.

- The XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) aims at the identification of a well defined sample of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies at redshifts z>0.8. As part of this project, we analyse the deep XMM-Newton exposure covering one of the CFHTLS deep fields to quantify the cluster content. We validate the optical follow-up strategy as well as the X-ray selection function. We search for extended X-ray sources in archival XMM-Newton EPIC observations. Multi-band optical imaging is performed to select high redshift cluster candidates among the extended X-ray sources. Here we present a catalogue of the extended sources in one the deepest LBQS ~250ks XMM-Newton fields targeting LBQS J2212-1759 covering ~0.2 square degrees. The cluster identification is based, among others, on deep imaging with the ESO VLT and from the CFHT legacy survey. The confirmation of cluster candidates is done by VLT/FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy. Photometric redshifts from the CFHTLS D4 are utilized to confirm the effectiveness of the X-ray cluster selection method. The survey sensitivity is computed with extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. At a flux limit of S(0.5-2.0keV)~2.5e-15erg/s/cm2 we achieve a completeness level higher than 50% in an area of ~0.13 square degrees. We detect six galaxy clusters above this limit with optical counterparts, of which 5 are new spectroscopic discoveries. Two newly discovered X-ray luminous galaxy clusters are at z>1.0, another two at z=0.41 and one at z=0.34. For the most distant X-ray selected cluster in this field at z=1.45 we find additional (active) member galaxies from both X-ray and spectroscopic data. Additionally, we find evidence of large scale structures at moderate redshifts of z=0.41 and z=0.34. The quest for distant clusters in archival XMM-Newton data has led to the detection of six clusters in a single field, making XMM-Newton an outstanding tool for cluster surveys. Three of these clusters are at z>1, which emphasises the valuable contribution of small, yet deep surveys to cosmology. Beta-models are appropriate descriptions for the cluster surface brightness to perform cluster detection simulations in order to compute the X-ray selection function. The constructed log N-log S tends to favour a scenario where no evolution in the cluster X-ray luminosity function (XLF) takes place.

- We publish the survey for galaxies in 20 fields containing ultraviolet bright quasars (with z_em_~0.1-0.5) that can be used to study the association between galaxies and absorption systems from the low-z intergalactic medium (IGM). The survey is magnitude limited (R~19.5mag) and highly complete out to 10' from the quasar in each field. It was designed to detect dwarf galaxies (L~0.1L*) at an impact parameter {rho}~1Mpc (z=0.1) from a quasar. The complete sample (all 20 fields) includes R-band photometry for 84718 sources and confirmed redshifts for 2800 sources. This includes 1198 galaxies with 0.005<z<(z_em_-0.01) at a median redshift of 0.18, which may associated with IGM absorption lines. All of the imaging was acquired with cameras on the Swope 40" telescope and the spectra were obtained via slit mask observations using the WFCCD spectrograph on the Dupont 100" telescope at Las Campanas Observatory.

- We present an imaging and spectroscopic survey of galaxies in fields around QSOs HE 0226-4110, PKS 0405-123, and PG 1216+069. The fields are selected to have ultraviolet echelle spectra available, which uncover 195 Ly{alpha} absorbers and 13 OVI absorbers along the three sightlines. We obtain robust redshifts for 1104 galaxies of rest-frame absolute magnitude M_R_-5logh<~-16 and at projected physical distances {rho}<~4h^-1^Mpc from the QSOs. Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/WFPC2 images of the fields around PKS 0405-123 and PG 1216+069 are available for studying the optical morphologies of absorbing galaxies. Combining the absorber and galaxy data, we perform a cross-correlation study to understand the physical origin of Ly{alpha} and OVI absorbers and to constrain the properties of extended gas around galaxies.

- The rest-frame far to extreme ultraviolet (UV) colour-redshift relationship has been constructed from data on over 480,000 quasars carefully cross-matched between SDSS Data Release 14 and the final GALEX photometric catalog. UV matching and detection probabilities are given for all the quasars, including dependencies on separation, optical brightness, and redshift. Detection limits in the UV bands are also provided for all objects. The UV colour distributions are skewed redward at virtually all redshifts, especially when detection limits are accounted for. The median GALEX far-UV minus near-UV (FUV-NUV) colour-redshift relation is reliably determined up to z~2.8, corresponding to rest-frame wavelengths as short as 400{AA}. Extreme-UV (EUV) colours are substantially redder than found previously, when detection limits are properly accounted for. Quasar template spectra were forward modeled through the GALEX bandpasses, accounting for intergalactic opacity, intrinsic reddening, and continuum slope variations. Intergalactic absorption by itself cannot account for the very red EUV colours. The colour-redshift relation is consistent with no intrinsic reddening, at least for SMC-like extinction. The best model fit has a far-UV continuum power-law slope of -0.34+/-0.03 consistent with previous results, but an EUV slope of -2.90+/-0.04 that is much redder and inconsistent with any previous composite value (all >-2.0). The EUV slope difference can be attributed in part to the tendency of previous studies to preferentially select UV brighter and bluer objects. The weak EUV flux suggests quasar accretion disc models that include outflows such as disc winds.

- We present an analysis of the broadband UV and optical properties of z~<3.4 quasars matched in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) General Data Release 1 (GR1) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3 (DR3). Of the 6371 SDSS DR3 quasars covered by 204 GALEX GR1 tiles, 5380 (84%) have near-UV detections, while 3034 (48%) have both near-UV and far-UV detections using a matching radius of 7". Most of the DR3 sample quasars are detected in the near-UV until z~1.7, with the near-UV detection fraction dropping to ~50% by z~2.

- We study the small population of high-redshift (z_em_>2.7) quasars detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer(GALEX), whose far-UV emission is not extinguished by intervening HI Lyman limit systems. We correlate almost all verified z_em_>2.7 quasars to the GALEX GR4 source catalog covering ~25000deg^2^, yielding 304 sources detected at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)>3. However, ~50% of these are only detected in the GALEX NUV band, signaling the truncation of the FUV flux by low-redshift optically thick Lyman limit systems. We regard 52 quasars detected at S/N>3 to be most promising for Hubble Space Telescope follow-up, with an additional 114 quasars if we consider S/N>2 detections in the FUV. Combining the statistical properties of HI absorbers with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar luminosity function, we predict a large all-sky population of ~200 quasars with z_em_>2.7 and i<~19 that should be detectable at the HeII edge at m_304_<21. However, SDSS provides just half of the NUV-bright quasars that should have been detected by SDSS and GALEX. With mock quasar photometry we revise the SDSS quasar selection function, finding that SDSS systematically misses quasars with blue u-g<~2 colors at 3<~z_em_<~3.5 due to overlap with the stellar locus in color space.

- We present {gamma}-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared light curves of 33 {gamma}-ray bright blazars over 4 years that we have been monitoring since 2008 August with multiple optical, ground-based telescopes and the Swift satellite, and augmented by data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and other publicly available data from Swift. The sample consists of 21 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 12 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). We identify quiescent and active states of the sources based on their {gamma}-ray behavior. We derive {gamma}-ray, X-ray, and optical spectral indices, {alpha}_{gamma}_, {alpha}_X_, and {alpha}_o_, respectively (F_{nu}_{prop.to}{nu}^{alpha}^), and construct spectral energy distributions during quiescent and active states. We analyze the relationships between different spectral indices, blazar classes, and activity states. We find (1) significantly steeper {gamma}-ray spectra of FSRQs than for BL Lacs during quiescent states, but a flattening of the spectra for FSRQs during active states while the BL Lacs show no significant change; (2) a small difference of {alpha}_X_ within each class between states, with BL Lac X-ray spectra significantly steeper than in FSRQs; (3) a highly peaked distribution of X-ray spectral slopes of FSRQs at ~ -0.60, but a very broad distribution of {alpha}_X_of BL Lacs during active states; (4) flattening of the optical spectra of FSRQs during quiescent states, but no statistically significant change of {alpha}_o_ of BL Lacs between states; and (5) a positive correlation between optical and {gamma}-ray spectral slopes of BL Lacs, with similar values of the slopes. We discuss the findings with respect to the relative prominence of different components of high-energy and optical emission as the flux state changes.
