- We examine the impact of gas pressure on the transverse coherence of high-redshift (2>=z>=4) Lyman{alpha} (Lyalpha) forest absorption along neighbouring lines of sight that probe the gas Jeans scale (projected separation {Delta}rp<=500h^-1^kpc comoving, angular separation {Delta}{theta}<=30arcsec). We compare predictions from two smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations that have different photoionization heating rates and thus different temperature-density relations in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We also compare spectra computed from the gas distributions to those computed from the pressureless dark matter.

- We present a new catalogue, the Imperial IRAS-FSC Redshift Catalogue (IIFSCz), of 60303 galaxies selected at 60um from the IRAS Faint Source Catalogue (FSC). The IIFSCz consists of accurate position, optical, near-infrared and/or radio identifications, spectroscopic redshift (if available) or photometric redshift (if possible), predicted far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre (submm) fluxes ranging from 12 to 1380um based upon the best-fitting infrared template. About 55% of the galaxies in the IIFSCz have spectroscopic redshifts, and a further 20% have photometric redshifts obtained through either the training set or the template-fitting method. For S(60)>0.36Jy, the 90% completeness limit of the FSC, 90% of the sources have either spectroscopic or photometric redshifts. Scientific applications of the IIFSCz include validation of current and forthcoming infrared and submm/mm surveys such as AKARI, Planck and Herschel, follow-up studies of rare source populations, large-scale structure and galaxy bias, local multiwavelength luminosity functions and source counts. - Improved redshifts for SDSS quasar spectra

- A systematic investigation of the relationship between different redshift estimation schemes for more than 91000 quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 6 is presented. The publicly available SDSS quasar redshifts are shown to possess systematic biases of {Delta}z/(1+z)>=0.002 (600km/s) over both small ({delta}z~=0.1) and large ({delta}z~=1) redshift intervals. Empirical relationships between redshifts based on (i) CaII H&K host galaxy absorption, (ii) quasar [OII] {lambda}{lambda}3728, (iii) [OIII] {lambda}{lambda} 4960, 5008 emission and (iv) cross-correlation (with a master-quasar template) that includes, at increasing quasar redshift, the prominent MgII {lambda}{lambda} 2799, CIII] {lambda}{lambda} 1908 and CIV {lambda}{lambda} 1549 emission lines are established as a function of quasar redshift and luminosity. New redshifts in the resulting catalogue possess systematic biases, a factor of ~=20 lower compared to the SDSS redshift values; systematic effects are reduced to the level of {Delta}z/(1+z) (30km/s) per unit redshift or <=2.5x10^-5^ per unit absolute magnitude. Redshift errors, including components due both to internal reproducibility and to the intrinsic quasar-to-quasar variation among the population, are available for all quasars in the catalogue. The improved redshifts and their associated errors have wide applicability in areas such as quasar absorption outflows, quasar clustering, quasar-galaxy clustering and proximity-effect determinations.

- We made a search for IRAS galaxies behind the Northern Milky Way by infrared selection using IRAS Point Source Catalog and visual inspection on POSS (Palomar Observatory Sky Survey) paper prints, and carried out a redshift survey of the identified objects. This paper presents a catalog of 649 IRAS galaxies with f_60_>=0.6Jy between l=150deg and 240deg at |b|<=15deg, which contains 254 newly identified galaxies and 188 newly measured radial velocities. Due to galactic extinction, our sample is a lower limit sample of the flux limited sample of IRAS galaxies, but it can give some information on the distribution of galaxies in the region perpendicular to the Supergalactic Plane. We confirm two regions with enhanced density at l~160deg, cz~5000km/s and l~190deg, cz~5000km/s and at least two possible voids.

- This is an explanation of the redshift survey of Fisher, Huchra, Strauss, Davis, Yahil and Schlegel; the data set is described in full in ApJ 361, 49 (1990). The data for the brighter half are included in ApJ Supp 1992, 83, 29; the data for the fainter half are included in a paper submitted for publication to the Astrophysical Journal Supplement. The survey contains 9897 objects selected from the IRAS database according to the criteria listed in that paper, briefly: F60 > 1.2 Jy; F60^2^ > F12 f25; |b| > 5; high source density flag at 60 microns not raised. Thus, the file consists of both galaxies and Galaxian contaminants; this is explained below. The sample contains ~5320 galaxies, and 14 objects without id's at the present time.

- Compact elliptical galaxies form a rare class of stellar system (~30 presently known) characterized by high stellar densities and small sizes and often harboring metal-rich stars. They were thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors, until two isolated objects were discovered where massive galaxies performing the stripping could not be identified. By mining astronomical survey data, we have now found 195 compact elliptical galaxies in all types of environment. They all share similar dynamical and stellar population properties. Dynamical analysis for nonisolated galaxies demonstrates the feasibility of their ejection from host clusters and groups by three-body encounters, which is in agreement with numerical simulations. Hence, isolated compact elliptical and isolated quiescent dwarf galaxies are tidally stripped systems that ran away from their hosts.

- We present physical properties [redshifts (z), star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M*)] of bright (S_850_>=4mJy) submm galaxies in the ~=2deg^2^ COSMOS and UDS fields selected with SCUBA-2/JCMT. We complete the galaxy identification process for all (~=2000) S/N>=3.5 850-{mu}m sources, but focus our scientific analysis on a high-quality subsample of 651 S/N>=4 sources with complete multiwavelength coverage including 1.1-mm imaging. We check the reliability of our identifications, and the robustness of the SCUBA-2 fluxes by revisiting the recent ALMA follow-up of 29 sources in our sample. Considering >4mJy ALMA sources, our identification method has a completeness of ~=86 per cent with a reliability of ~=92 per cent, and only ~=15-20 per cent of sources are significantly affected by multiplicity (when a secondary component contributes >1/3 of the primary source flux). The impact of source blending on the 850-{mu}m source counts as determined with SCUBA-2 is modest; scaling the single-dish fluxes by ~=0.9 reproduces the ALMA source counts. For our final SCUBA-2 sample, we find median z=2.40^+0.10^_-0.04_, SFR=287+/-6M_{sun}_/yr and log(M*/M_{sun)_=11.12+/-0.02 (the latter for 349/651 sources with optical identifications). These properties clearly locate bright submm galaxies on the high-mass end of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies out to z~= 6, suggesting that major mergers are not a dominant driver of the high-redshift submm-selected population. Their number densities are also consistent with the evolving galaxy stellar mass function. Hence, the submm galaxy population is as expected, albeit reproducing the evolution of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies remains a challenge for theoretical models/simulations.

- The entire KG (KG) catalog is presented which combines extensive new measurements of their optical parameters with a literature and database search. The measurements were made using images extracted from the STScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) of Jpg(blue), Fpg(red) and Ipg(NIR) band photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar and UK Schmidt telescopes. We provide accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity classes, blue apparent diameters, axial ratios, position angles, red, blue and NIR apparent magnitudes, as well as counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50kpc from centers of KG. Special attention was paid to the individual descriptions of the galaxies in the original Kazarian lists, which clarified many cases of misidentifications of the objects, particularly among interacting systems. The total number of individual Kazarian objects in the database is now 706. We also include the redshifts which are now available for 404 galaxies, and the 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 598 KG. The database also includes extensive notes, which summarize information about the membership of KG in different systems of galaxies, and about revised activity classes and redshifts. An atlas of several interesting subclasses of KG is also presented.

- We present UFTI K-band imaging observations of 222 galaxies that are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have unusually strong H{delta} absorption equivalent widths, W(H{delta})>4{AA}. Using GIM2D, the images are fitted with two-dimensional surface-brightness models consisting of a simple disc and bulge component to derive the fraction of luminosity in the bulge B/T.

- We present a measurement of the K-band luminosity function (LF) of field galaxies obtained from near-infrared imaging of a sample of 345 galaxies selected from the Stromlo-APM Redshift Survey. The LF is reasonably well fitted over the 10-mag range -26 < M(K-band) < -16 by a Schechter function with the parameters {alpha}=-1.16+/-0.19, M*=-23.58+/-0.42 and {phi*}=0.012+/-0.008 Mpc-3, assuming a Hubble constant of 100 km.s-1.Mpc-1. We have also estimated the LF for two subsets of galaxies subdivided by the equivalent width of the H{alpha} emission line at EW(H{alpha})=1nm. There is no significant difference in LF shape between the two samples, although there is a hint (~1{sigma} significance) that emission-line galaxies (ELGs) have M* roughly 1 mag fainter than non-ELGs. Contrary to the optical LF, there is no difference in the faint end slope {alpha} between the two samples.
