- Fast radio burst (FRB) 190608 was detected by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and localized to a spiral galaxy at z_host_=0.11778 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint. The burst has a large dispersion measure (DM_FRB_=339.8pc/cm^3^) compared to the expected cosmic average at its redshift. It also has a large rotation measure (RM_FRB_=353rad/m^2^) and scattering timescale ({tau}=3.3ms at 1.28GHz). Chittidi+ (2021ApJ...922..173C) perform a detailed analysis of the ultraviolet and optical emission of the host galaxy and estimate the host DM contribution to be 110+/-37pc/cm^3^. This work complements theirs and reports the analysis of the optical data of galaxies in the foreground of FRB 190608 in order to explore their contributions to the FRB signal. Together, the two studies delineate an observationally driven, end-to-end study of matter distribution along an FRB sightline, the first study of its kind. Combining our Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) observations and public SDSS data, we estimate the expected cosmic dispersion measure DM_cosmic along the sightline to FRB 190608. We first estimate the contribution of hot, ionized gas in intervening virialized halos (DM_halos_~7-28pc/cm^3^). Then, using the Monte Carlo Physarum Machine methodology, we produce a 3D map of ionized gas in cosmic web filaments and compute the DM contribution from matter outside halos (DM_IGM_~91-126pc/cm^3^). This implies that a greater fraction of ionized gas along this sightline is extant outside virialized halos. We also investigate whether the intervening halos can account for the large FRB rotation measure and pulse width and conclude that it is implausible. Both the pulse broadening and the large Faraday rotation likely arise from the progenitor environment or the host galaxy.

- This paper is based on the multi-band (ugri) Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). We study bright early-type galaxies (m_B_<15mag) in the 9 square degrees around the core of the Fornax cluster, which covers the virial radius (R_vir~0.7Mpc). The main goal of the present work is to provide an analysis of the light distribution for all galaxies out to unprecedented limits (in radius and surface brightness) and to release the main products resulting from this analysis in all FDS bands. We give an initial comprehensive view of the galaxy structure and evolution as a function of the cluster environment. From the isophote fit, we derived the azimuthally averaged surface brightness profiles, the position angle, and ellipticity profiles as a function of the semi-major axis. In each band, we derived the total magnitudes, effective radii, integrated colours, and stellar mass-to-light ratios. The long integration times, the arcsec-level angular resolution of OmegaCam@VST, and the large covered area of FDS allow us to map the light and colour distributions out to large galactocentric distances (up to about 10^-15^Re) and surface brightness levels beyond mu_r_=27mag/arcsec^2^ (mu_B_>28mag/arcsec^2^). Therefore, the new FDS data allow us to explore in great detail the morphology and structure of cluster galaxies out to the region of the stellar halo. The analysis presented in this paper allows us to study how the structure of galaxies and the stellar population content vary with the distance from the cluster centre. In addition to the intra-cluster features detected in previous FDS works, we found a new faint filament between FCC 143 and FCC 147, suggesting an ongoing interaction. The observations suggest that the Fornax cluster is not completely relaxed inside the virial radius. The bulk of the gravitational interactions between galaxies happens in the W-NW core region of the cluster, where most of the bright early-type galaxies are located and where the intra-cluster baryons (diffuse light and globular clusters) are found. We suggest that the W-NW sub-clump of galaxies results from an infalling group onto the cluster, which has modified the structure of the galaxy outskirts (making asymmetric stellar halos) and has produced the intra-cluster baryons (ICL and GCs), concentrated in this region of the cluster.

- The Fornax cluster provides an unparalleled opportunity of investigating the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in a dense environment in detail. We aim at kinematically characterising photometrically detected globular cluster (GC) candidates in the core of the cluster. We used VLT/VIMOS spectroscopic data from the FVSS survey in the Fornax cluster, covering one square degree around the central massive galaxy NGC 1399. We confirm a total of 777 GCs, almost doubling previously detected GCs, using the same dataset as was used before. Combined with previous literature radial velocity measurements of GCs in Fornax, we compile the most extensive spectroscopic GC sample of 2341 objects in this environment. We found that red GCs are mostly concentrated around major galaxies, while blue GCs are kinematically irregular and are widely spread throughout the core region of the cluster. The velocity dispersion profiles of blue and red GCs show a quite distinct behaviour. Blue GCs exhibit a sharp increase in the velocity dispersion profile from 250 to 400km/s within 5 arcminutes (~29kpc~1r_eff_ of NGC 1399) from the central galaxy. The velocity dispersion profile of red GCs follows a constant value between 200-300km/s until 8 arcminutes (~46kpc~1.6r_eff_, and then rises to 350km/s at 10 arcminutes (~58kpc~2r_eff_). Beyond 10 arcminutes and out to 40 arcminutes (~230kpc~8r_eff_), blue and red GCs show a constant velocity dispersion of 300+/-50km/s, indicating that both GC populations trace the cluster potential. We kinematically confirm and characterise the previously photometrically discovered overdensities of intra-cluster GCs. We found that these substructured intra-cluster regions in Fornax are dominated mostly by blue GCs.

- We present a panoramic study of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy, using data obtained as part of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) ATLAS Survey. The data presented here - a subset of the full survey - uniformly cover a region of 25deg^2^ centred on the galaxy, in g, r and i bands. This large area coverage reveals two key differences to previous studies of Fornax. First, data extending beyond the nominal tidal radius of the dwarf highlight the presence of a second distinct red giant branch population. This bluer red giant branch appears to be co-eval with the horizontal branch population. Secondly, a shell structure located approximately 1.4{deg} from the centre of Fornax is shown to be a mis-identified background overdensity of galaxies. This last result casts further doubt on the hypothesis that Fornax underwent a gas-rich merger in its relatively recent past.

- The Foundation Supernova Survey aims to provide a large, high-fidelity, homogeneous, and precisely calibrated low-redshift Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) sample for cosmology. The calibration of the current low-redshift SN sample is the largest component of systematic uncertainties for SN cosmology, and new data are necessary to make progress. We present the motivation, survey design, observation strategy, implementation, and first results for the Foundation Supernova Survey. We are using the Pan-STARRS telescope to obtain photometry for up to 800 SNe Ia at z<~0.1. This strategy has several unique advantages: (1) the Pan-STARRS system is a superbly calibrated telescopic system, (2) Pan-STARRS has observed 3/4 of the sky in grizyP1 making future template observations unnecessary, (3) we have a well-tested data-reduction pipeline, and (4) we have observed ~3000 high-redshift SNe Ia on this system. Here, we present our initial sample of 225 SN Ia grizP1 light curves, of which 180 pass all criteria for inclusion in a cosmological sample. The Foundation Supernova Survey already contains more cosmologically useful SNe Ia than all other published low-redshift SN Ia samples combined. We expect that the systematic uncertainties for the Foundation Supernova Sample will be two to three times smaller than other low-redshift samples. We find that our cosmologically useful sample has an intrinsic scatter of 0.111mag, smaller than other low-redshift samples. We perform detailed simulations showing that simply replacing the current low-redshift SN Ia sample with an equally sized Foundation sample will improve the precision on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter by 35 per cent, and the dark energy figure of merit by 72 per cent.

- We present the results of SPT-GMOS, a spectroscopic survey with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini South. The targets of SPT-GMOS are galaxy clusters identified in the SPT-SZ survey, a millimeter-wave survey of 2500deg^2^ of the southern sky using the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Multi-object spectroscopic observations of 62 SPT-selected galaxy clusters were performed between 2011 January and 2015 December, yielding spectra with radial velocity measurements for 2595 sources. We identify 2243 of these sources as galaxies, and 352 as stars. Of the galaxies, we identify 1579 as members of SPT-SZ galaxy clusters. The primary goal of these observations was to obtain spectra of cluster member galaxies to estimate cluster redshifts and velocity dispersions. We describe the full spectroscopic data set and resulting data products, including galaxy redshifts, cluster redshifts, and velocity dispersions, and measurements of several well-known spectral indices for each galaxy: the equivalent width, W, of [OII]{lambda}{lambda}3727, 3729 and H-{delta}, and the 4000{AA} break strength, D4000. We use the spectral indices to classify galaxies by spectral type (i.e., passive, post-starburst, star-forming), and we match the spectra against photometric catalogs to characterize spectroscopically observed cluster members as a function of brightness (relative to m*). Finally, we report several new measurements of redshifts for ten bright, strongly lensed background galaxies in the cores of eight galaxy clusters. Combining the SPT-GMOS data set with previous spectroscopic follow-up of SPT-SZ galaxy clusters results in spectroscopic measurements for >100 clusters, or ~20% of the full SPT-SZ sample.

- We present g' and z' aperture photometry for 96 Galactic globular clusters, making this the largest homogeneous catalogue of photometry for these objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) filter system. For a subset of 56 clusters, we also provide photometry in r' and i'. We carry out comparisons with previous photometry as well as with the SDSS data set. The data will be useful for a series of applications in Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics. Future papers will analyse the colour-metallicity relation, colour-magnitude diagrams and structural parameters. The compilation of results based on this data set will be collected in the Galactic Globular Cluster Catalog (G2C2).

- We use Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey data for 170deg^2^, recalibrated and transformed to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey ugri photometric system, to study the distribution of near-turnoff main-sequence stars in the Galactic halo along four lines of sight to heliocentric distances of ~35kpc. We find that the halo stellar number density profile becomes steeper at Galactocentric distances greater than R_gal_~28kpc, with the power-law index changing from n_inner_=-2.62+/-0.04 to n_outer_=-3.8+/-0.1. In particular, we test a series of single power-law models and find them to be strongly disfavored by the data. The parameters for the best-fit Einasto profile are n=2.2+/-0.2 and R_e_=22.2+/-0.4kpc. We measure the oblateness of the halo to be q=c/a=0.70+/-0.01 and detect no evidence of it changing across the range of probed distances. The Sagittarius stream is detected in the l=173{deg} and b=-62{deg} direction as an overdensity of [Fe/H]~-1.5dex stars at R_gal_~32kpc, providing a new constraint for the Sagittarius stream and dark matter halo models. We also detect the Monoceros stream as an overdensity of [Fe/H]>-1.5dex stars in the l=232{deg} and b=26{deg} direction at R_gal_<~25kpc. In the two sight lines where we do not detect significant substructure, the median metallicity is found to be independent of distance within systematic uncertainties ([Fe/H]~-1.5+/-0.1dex).

- We present analysis of 12227 type-ab RR Lyraes (RRLs; ~9400 are newly discovered) found among the 200 million public light curves in Catalina Surveys Data Release 1. These stars span the largest volume of the Milky Way ever surveyed with RRLs, covering ~20000deg^2^ of the sky (0{deg}<{alpha}<360{deg}, -22{deg}<{delta}<65{deg}) to heliocentric distances of up to 60kpc. Each of the RRLs is observed between 60 and 419 times over a six-year period. Using period finding and Fourier fitting techniques we determine periods and apparent magnitudes for each source. We find that the periods are generally accurate to {sigma}=0.002% in comparison to 2842 previously known RRLs and 100 RRLs observed in overlapping survey fields. We photometrically calibrate the light curves using 445 Landolt standard stars and show that the resulting magnitudes are accurate to ~0.05mag using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data for ~1000 blue horizontal branch stars and 7788 RRLs. By combining Catalina photometry with SDSS spectroscopy, we analyze the radial velocity and metallicity distributions for >1500 of the RRLs. Using the accurate distances derived for the RRLs, we show the paths of the Sagittarius tidal streams crossing the sky at heliocentric distances from 20 to 60kpc. By selecting samples of Galactic halo RRLs, we compare their velocity, metallicity, and distance with predictions from a recent detailed N-body model of the Sagittarius system. We find that there are some significant differences between the distances and structures predicted and our observations.

- Massive stars have high-multiplicity fractions, and many of them have still undetected components, thus hampering the study of their properties. I study a sample of massive stars with high angular resolution to better characterize their multiplicity. I observed 138 fields that include at least one massive star with AstraLux, a lucky imaging camera at the 2.2m Calar Alto telescope. I also used observations of 3 of those fields with ACS/HRC on HST to obtain complementary information and to calibrate the AstraLux data. The results were compared with existing information from the Washington Double Star Catalog, Tycho-2, 2MASS, and other literature results.
