- Description:
- We present the properties of the first 250 {mu}m blind sample of nearby galaxies (15<D<46Mpc) containing 42 objects from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. Herschel's sensitivity probes the faint end of the dust luminosity function for the first time, spanning a range of stellar mass (7.4<M*<11.3log10M_{sun}_), star formation activity (-11.8<SSFR<-8.9log10yr^-1^), gas fraction (3-96 per cent), and colour (0.6<FUV-K_S_<7.0mag). The median cold dust temperature is 14.6K, colder than in the Herschel Reference Survey (18.5K) and Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (17.7K). The mean dust-to-stellar mass ratio in our sample is higher than these surveys by factors of 3.7 and 1.8, with a dust mass volume density of (3.7+/-0.7)x10^5^M_{sun}_/Mpc^3^. Counter-intuitively, we find that the more dust rich a galaxy, the lower its UV attenuation. Over half of our dust-selected sample are very blue in FUV-K_S_ colour, with irregular and/or highly flocculent morphology; these galaxies account for only 6 per cent of the sample's stellar mass but contain over 35 per cent of the dust mass. They are the most actively star-forming galaxies in the sample, with the highest gas fractions and lowest UV attenuation. They also appear to be in an early stage of converting their gas into stars, providing valuable insights into the chemical evolution of young galaxies.

- HAQ survey: red QSO candidates follow-up

- Description:
- Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are reddened by dust either in their host galaxies or in intervening absorber galaxies are to a large degree missed by optical color selection criteria like the ones used by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To overcome this bias against red QSOs, we employ a combined optical and near-infrared (near-IR) color selection. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic follow-up campaign of a sample of red candidate QSOs which were selected from the SDSS and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The spectroscopic data and SDSS/UKIDSS photometry are supplemented by mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. In our sample of 159 candidates, 154 (97%) are confirmed to be QSOs. We use a statistical algorithm to identify sightlines with plausible intervening absorption systems and identify nine such cases assuming dust in the absorber similar to Large Magellanic Cloud sightlines. We find absorption systems toward 30 QSOs, 2 of which are consistent with the best-fit absorber redshift from the statistical modeling. Furthermore, we observe a broad range in SED properties of the QSOs as probed by the rest-frame 2{mu}m flux. We find QSOs with a strong excess as well as QSOs with a large deficit at rest-frame 2{mu}m relative to a QSO template. Potential solutions to these discrepancies are discussed. Overall, our study demonstrates the high efficiency of the optical/near-IR selection of red QSOs.

- H-ATLAS search for strongly lensed galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/749/65

- Publisher:

- Description:
- While the selection of strongly lensed galaxies (SLGs) with 500{mu}m flux density S_500_>100mJy has proven to be rather straightforward, for many applications it is important to analyze samples larger than the ones obtained when confining ourselves to such a bright limit. Moreover, only by probing to fainter flux densities is it possible to exploit strong lensing to investigate the bulk of the high-z star-forming galaxy population. We describe HALOS (the Herschel-ATLAS Lensed Objects Selection), a method for efficiently selecting fainter candidate SLGs, reaching a surface density of =~1.5-2/deg^2^, i.e., a factor of about 4-6 higher than that at the 100mJy flux limit. HALOS will allow the selection of up to ~1000 candidate SLGs (with amplifications {mu}>~2) over the full H-ATLAS survey area. Applying HALOS to the H-ATLAS Science Demonstration Phase field (=~14.4deg^2^) we find 31 candidate SLGs, whose candidate lenses are identified in the VIKING near-infrared catalog. Using the available information on candidate sources and candidate lenses we tentatively estimate a =~72% purity of the sample. As expected, the purity decreases with decreasing flux density of the sources and with increasing angular separation between candidate sources and lenses. The redshift distribution of the candidate lensed sources is close to that reported for most previous surveys for lensed galaxies, while that of candidate lenses extends to redshifts substantially higher than found in the other surveys. The counts of candidate SLGs are also in good agreement with model predictions. Even though a key ingredient of the method is the deep near-infrared VIKING photometry, we show that H-ATLAS data alone allow the selection of a similarly deep sample of candidate SLGs with an efficiency close to 50%; a slightly lower surface density (=~ 1.45/deg2) can be reached with a ~70% efficiency.

- HAT-P-18 and HAT-P-19 follow-up

- Description:
- We report the discovery of two new transiting extrasolar planets. HAT-P-18b orbits the V=12.759 K2 dwarf star GSC 2594-00646, with a period P=5.508023+/-0.000006 days, transit epoch T_c_=2454715.02174+/-0.00020(BJD), and transit duration 0.1131+/-0.0009 days. The host star has a mass of 0.77+/-0.03M_{sun}_, radius of 0.75+/-0.04R_{sun}_, effective temperature 4803+/-80K, and metallicity [Fe/H]=+0.10+/-0.08. The planetary companion has a mass of 0.197+/-0.013M_J_ and radius of 0.995+/-0.052R_J_, yielding a mean density of 0.25+/-0.04g/cm^3^. HAT-P-19b orbits the V=12.901 K1 dwarf star GSC 2283-00589, with a period P=4.008778+/-0.000006 days, transit epoch T_c_=2455091.53417+/-0.00034(BJD), and transit duration 0.1182+/-0.0014 days. The host star has a mass of 0.84+/-0.04M_{sun}_, radius of 0.82+/-0.05R_{sun}_, effective temperature 4990+/-130K, and metallicity [Fe/H]=+0.23+/-0.08. The planetary companion has a mass of 0.292+/-0.018M_J_ and radius of 1.132+/-0.072R_J_, yielding a mean density of 0.25+/-0.04g/cm^3^. The radial velocity residuals for HAT-P-19 exhibit a linear trend in time, which indicates the presence of a third body in the system. Comparing these observations with theoretical models, we find that HAT-P-18b and HAT-P-19b are each consistent with a hydrogen-helium-dominated gas giant planet with negligible core mass. HAT-P-18b and HAT-P-19b join HAT-P-12b and WASP-21b in an emerging group of low-density Saturn-mass planets, with negligible inferred core masses. However, unlike HAT-P-12b and WASP-21b, both HAT-P-18b and HAT-P-19b orbit stars with super-solar metallicity.

- Description:
- We announce the discovery of two new transiting planets, and provide their accurate initial characterization. First identified from the HATNet wide-field photometric survey, these candidate transiting planets were then followed-up with a variety of photometric observations. Determining the planetary nature of the objects and characterizing the parameters of the systems were mainly done with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 1.93m telescope at OHP and the TRES spectrograph at the 1.5m telescope at FLWO.

- Description:
- We report the discovery of HAT-P-30b, a transiting exoplanet orbiting the V=10.419 dwarf star GSC 0208-00722. The planet has a period P=2.810595+/-0.000005 days, transit epoch T_c_=2455456.46561+/-0.00037 (BJD), and transit duration 0.0887+/-0.0015 days. The host star has a mass of 1.24+/-0.04M_{sun}_, radius of 1.21+/-0.05R_{sun}_, effective temperature of 6304+/-88K, and metallicity [Fe/H]=+0.13+/-0.08. The planetary companion has a mass of 0.711+/-0.028M_J_ and radius of 1.340+/-0.065R_J_ yielding a mean density of 0.37+/-0.05g/cm^3^. We also present radial velocity measurements that were obtained throughout a transit that exhibit the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. By modeling this effect, we measure an angle of {lambda}=73.5+/-9.0{deg} between the sky projections of the planet's orbit normal and the star's spin axis. HAT-P-30b represents another example of a close-in planet on a highly tilted orbit, and conforms to the previously noted pattern that tilted orbits are more common around stars with T_eff*_>~6250K.

- Description:
- We present calibrations for star formation rate (SFR) indicators in the ultraviolet, mid-infrared, and radio-continuum bands, including one of the first direct calibrations of 150MHz as an SFR indicator. Our calibrations utilize 66 nearby star-forming galaxies with Balmer-decrement-corrected H{alpha} luminosities, which span five orders of magnitude in SFR and have absolute magnitudes of -24<M_r_{<}-12. Most of our photometry and spectrophotometry are measured from the same region of each galaxy, and our spectrophotometry has been validated with SDSS photometry, so our random and systematic errors are small relative to the intrinsic scatter seen in SFR indicator calibrations. We find that the Wide-field Infrared Space Explorer W4 (22.8{mu}m), Spitzer 24{mu}m, and 1.4GHz bands have tight correlations with the Balmer-decrement-corrected H{alpha} luminosity, with a scatter of only 0.2dex. Our calibrations are comparable to those from the prior literature for L* galaxies, but for dwarf galaxies, our calibrations can give SFRs that are far greater than those derived from most previous literature.

- Description:
- The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) is a survey of 660deg^2^ with the PACS and SPIRE cameras in five photometric bands: 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500{mu}m. This is the second of three papers describing the data release for the large fields at the south and north Galactic poles (NGP and SGP). In this paper we describe the catalogs of far-infrared and submillimeter sources for the NGP and SGP, which cover 177.1deg^2^ and 303.4deg^2^, respectively. The catalogs contain 118980 sources for the NGP field and 193527 sources for the SGP field detected at more than 4{sigma} significance in any of the 250, 350, or 500{mu}m bands. The source detection is based on the 250{mu}m map, and we present photometry in all five bands for each source, including aperture photometry for sources known to be extended. The rms positional accuracy for the faintest sources is about 2.4" in both RA and DEC. We present a statistical analysis of the catalogs and discuss the practical issues-completeness, reliability, flux boosting, accuracy of positions, accuracy of flux measurements-necessary to use the catalogs for astronomical projects.

- High-metallicity M giant candidates from SDSS

- Description:
- Tidal stripping and three-body interactions with the central supermassive black hole may eject stars from the Milky Way. These stars would comprise a set of "intragroup" stars (IGS) that trace the past history of interactions in our galactic neighborhood. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 (Cat. II/294, superseded by Cat. V/139), we identify candidate solar-metallicity red giant intragroup stars using color cuts that are designed to exclude nearby M and L dwarfs. We present 677 intragroup candidates that are selected between 300kpc and 2Mpc, and are either the reddest intragroup candidates (M7-M10) or are L dwarfs at larger distances than previously detected.
