- We present a catalog of early-time (~10^2^-10^4^s) photometry and polarimetry of all gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows observed with the RINGO2 imaging polarimeter on the Liverpool Telescope. Of the 19 optical afterglows observed, the following nine were bright enough to perform photometry and attempt polarimetry: GRB100805A, GRB101112A, GRB110205A, GRB110726A, GRB120119A, GRB120308A, GRB120311A, GRB120326A, and GRB120327A. We present multiwavelength light curves for these 9 GRBs, together with estimates of their optical polarization degrees and/or limits. We carry out a thorough investigation of detection probabilities, instrumental properties, and systematics. Using two independent methods, we confirm previous reports of significant polarization in GRB 110205A and 120308A, and report the new detection of P=6_-2_^+3^% in GRB101112A. We discuss the results for the sample in the context of the reverse- and forward-shock afterglow scenario, and show that GRBs with detectable optical polarization at early time have clearly identifiable signatures of reverse-shock emission in their optical light curves. This supports the idea that GRB ejecta contain large-scale magnetic fields, and it highlights the importance of rapid-response polarimetry.

- By using the dense coverage of the extrasolar planet survey project HATNet (Hungarian-made Automated Telescope Network), we Fourier analyse 381 high-probability members of the nearby open cluster Praesepe (Beehive/M44/NGC 2632). In addition to the detection of 10 variables (of delta Scuti and other types), we identify 180 rotational variables (including the two known planet hosts). This sample increases the number of known rotational variables in this cluster for spectral classes earlier than M by more than a factor of 3. These stars closely follow a colour/magnitude - period relation from early F to late K stars. We approximate this relation by polynomials for an easier reference to the rotational characteristics in different colours. The total (peak-to-peak) amplitudes of the large majority (94%) of these variables span the range of 0.005-0.04mag. The periods cover a range from 2.5 to 15d. These data strongly confirm that Praesepe and the Hyades have the same gyrochronological ages. Regarding the two planet hosts, Pr0211 (the one with the shorter orbital period) has a rotational period that is ~2d shorter than the one expected from the main rotational pattern in this cluster. This, together with other examples discussed in the paper, may hint that star-planet interaction via tidal dissipation can be significant in some cases in the rotational evolution of stars hosting hot Jupiters.

- We analyze K2 light curves for 794 low-mass (1>~M_*_>~0.1M_{sun}_) members of the ~650Myr old open cluster Praesepe and measure rotation periods (P_rot_) for 677 of these stars. We find that half of the rapidly rotating >~0.3M_{sun}_ stars are confirmed or candidate binary systems. The remaining >~0.3M_{sun}_ fast rotators have not been searched for companions, and are therefore not confirmed single stars. We previously found that nearly all rapidly rotating 0.3M_{sun}_ stars in the Hyades are binaries, but we require deeper binary searches in Praesepe to confirm whether binaries in these two co-eval clusters have different P_rot_ distributions. We also compare the observed P_rot_ distribution in Praesepe to that predicted by models of angular-momentum evolution. We do not observe the clear bimodal P_rot_ distribution predicted by Brown (2014ApJ...789..101B) for >0.5M_{sun}_ stars at the age of Praesepe, but 0.25-0.5M_{sun}_ stars do show stronger bimodality. In addition, we find that >60% of early M dwarfs in Praesepe rotate more slowly than predicted at 650Myr by Matt+ (2015ApJ...799L..23M), which suggests an increase in braking efficiency for these stars relative to solar-type stars and fully convective stars. The incompleteness of surveys for binaries in open clusters likely impacts our comparison with these models since the models only attempt to describe the evolution of isolated single stars.

- We report the discovery by B.G. Harris and S. Dvorak on JD 2455224.9385 (2010 January 28.4385 UT) of the predicted eruption of the recurrent nova U Scorpii (U Sco). We also report 815 magnitudes (and 16 useful limits) on the pre-eruption light curve in the UBVRI and Sloan r' and i' bands from 2000.4 up to 9hr before the peak of the 2010 January eruption.

- We examine the global properties of the stellar and HI components of 229 low HI mass dwarf galaxies extracted from the ALFALFA survey ({alpha}.40; Haynes et al., 2011, Cat. J/AJ/142/170), including a complete sample of 176 galaxies with HI masses<10^7.7^M_{sun}_and HI line widths<80km/s. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; Cat . II/294 superseded by Cat. V/139) data are combined with photometric properties derived from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX; GR5, Cat. II/312) to derive stellar masses (M_*_) and star formation rates (SFRs) by fitting their UV-optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). In optical images, many of the ALFALFA dwarfs are faint and of low surface brightness; only 56% of those within the SDSS footprint have a counterpart in the SDSS spectroscopic survey. A large fraction of the dwarfs have high specific star formation rates (SSFRs), and estimates of their SFRs and M_*_ obtained by SED fitting are systematically smaller than ones derived via standard formulae assuming a constant SFR. The increased dispersion of the SSFR distribution at M_*_<~10^8^M_{sun}_ is driven by a set of dwarf galaxies that have low gas fractions and SSFRs; some of these are dE/dSphs in the Virgo Cluster. The imposition of an upper HI mass limit yields the selection of a sample with lower gas fractions for their M_*_ than found for the overall ALFALFA population. Many of the ALFALFA dwarfs, particularly the Virgo members, have HI depletion timescales shorter than a Hubble time. An examination of the dwarf galaxies within the full ALFALFA population in the context of global star formation (SF) laws is consistent with the general assumptions that gas-rich galaxies have lower SF efficiencies than do optically selected populations and that HI disks are more extended than stellar ones.

- We present a catalog of 80 very wide fragile binary candidates (projected separations >10000AU) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Eight spectral archive. The pairs were selected based on proper motion, radial velocity, metallicity, and photometric parallax criteria. The angular separations of these pairs range from 3" to 250". The peak in the metallicity distribution of these pairs is about -0.5dex of solar metallicity. Space motions and reduced proper motion diagrams indicate that all these pairs are members of the disk. The chromospheric activity index S_HK_ of each component in 38 binary candidates having spectra of high signal-to-noise ratio and member stars of three open clusters (NGC 2420, M67, and NGC 6791) were measured. The S_HK_ versus color relation for these binary candidates is consistent with the trend seen in these open clusters. The ages implied by this relation suggest that fragile wide pairs can survive longer than 8Gyr.

- We study the spectral energy distributions and evolution of a large sample of optically selected quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey that were observed in 323 Chandra images analyzed by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project. Our highest-confidence matched sample includes 1135 X-ray detected quasars in the redshift range 0.2<z<5.4, representing some 36Msec of effective exposure. We provide catalogs of QSO properties, and describe our novel method of calculating X-ray flux upper limits and effective sky coverage. Spectroscopic redshifts are available for about 1/3 of the detected sample; elsewhere, redshifts are estimated photometrically. We detect 56 QSOs with redshift z>3, substantially expanding the known sample. We find no evidence for evolution out to z~5 for either the X-ray photon index {Gamma} or for the ratio of optical/UV to X-ray flux {alpha}_ox_.

- Intermediate-age (IA) star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) present extended main-sequence turn-offs (MSTO) that have been attributed to either multiple stellar populations or an effect of stellar rotation. Recently it has been proposed that these extended main sequences can also be produced by ill-characterized stellar variability. Here we present Gemini-S/Gemini Multi-Object Spectrometer (GMOS) time series observations of the IA cluster NGC 1846. Using differential image analysis, we identified 73 new variable stars, with 55 of those being of the Delta Scuti type, that is, pulsating variables close the MSTO for the cluster age. Considering completeness and background contamination effects, we estimate the number of {delta} Sct belonging to the cluster between 40 and 60 members, although this number is based on the detection of a single {delta} Sct within the cluster half-light radius. This amount of variable stars at the MSTO level will not produce significant broadening of the MSTO, albeit higher-resolution imaging will be needed to rule out variable stars as a major contributor to the extended MSTO phenomenon. Though modest, this amount of {delta} Sct makes NGC 1846 the star cluster with the highest number of these variables ever discovered. Lastly, our results present a cautionary tale about the adequacy of shallow variability surveys in the LMC (like OGLE) to derive properties of its {delta} Sct population.

- There is mounting evidence that active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected through optical emission lines or radio luminosities comprise two distinct AGN populations, whose activity is triggered by different processes. In two previous papers, we studied the host galaxies and environment of radio-loud AGN. In this third paper we study the properties of a sample of Type-2 AGN that were selected on the basis of their [2-10]keV X-ray luminosity. We find that the X-ray luminosity function is in good agreement with previous studies and that the fraction of galaxies hosting an X-ray AGN is a strong function of the stellar mass of the host galaxy. The shape of this fraction-mass relation is similar to the fraction of galaxies that are emission-line AGN, while it differs significantly from the relation observed for radio-selected AGN. The AGN in our sample tend to be located in underdense environments where galaxy mergers and interactions are likely to occur. For all host galaxy masses, the Type-2 AGN display a strong infrared excess at short (~3.5um) wavelengths, suggesting the presence of hot dust possibly associated with a hot dusty torus. These results add weight to the belief that the X-ray selection criteria identifies a population of AGN similar to the emission-line selected population but distinct from the radio population at high masses.
