- Tully-Fisher relation for SDSS galaxies

- Description:
- We measure the relation between galaxy luminosity and disk circular velocity (the Tully-Fisher [TF] relation), in the g, r, i, and z bands, for a broadly selected sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with the goal of providing well-defined observational constraints for theoretical models of galaxy formation. The input sample of 234 galaxies has a roughly flat distribution of absolute magnitudes in the range -18.5>M_r_>-22, and our only morphological selection is an isophotal axis ratio cut b/a<=0.6 to allow accurate inclination corrections. Long-slit spectroscopy from the Calar Alto and MDM observatories yields usable Halpha rotation curves for 162 galaxies (69%), with a representative color and morphology distribution. We define circular velocities V_80_ by evaluating the rotation curve at the radius containing 80% of the i-band light.

- Description:
- We present the first release of Turin-SyCAT, a multifrequency catalog of Seyfert galaxies. We selected Seyfert galaxies considering criteria based on radio, infrared, and optical properties and starting from sources belonging to hard X-ray catalogs and surveys. We visually inspected optical spectra available for all selected sources. We adopted homogeneous and stringent criteria in the source selection aiming at reducing the possible contamination from other source classes. Our final catalog includes 351 Seyfert galaxies distinguished in 233 type 1 and 118 type 2. Type 1 Seyfert galaxies appear to have mid-IR colors similar to blazars, but are distinguished from them by their radio-loudness. Additionally, Seyfert 2 galaxies have mid-IR colors more similar to quasars than BL Lac objects. As expected from their spectral properties, type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies show a clear distinction when using the u-r color. Finally, we found a tight correlation between the mid-IR fluxes at both 12 and 22 um (i.e., F12 and F22, respectively) and hard X-ray fluxes between 15 and 150 keV. Both Seyfert types appear to follow the same trend and share similar values of the ratios of F12 and F22 to FHX in agreement with expectations of the AGN unification scenario. As future perspectives, the Turin-SyCAT will then be used to search for heavily obscured Seyfert galaxies among unidentified hard X-ray sources, given the correlation between mid-IR and hard X-rays, and to investigate their large-scale environments.

- Type Ia supernovae candidates from SDSS
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/389/1871
- Date:

- Description:
- In the course of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I), a large fraction of the surveyed area was observed more than once due to field tiling overlap, usually at different epochs. We utilize some of these data to perform a supernova (SN) survey at a mean redshift of z=0.2. Our archival search, in ~5 per cent of the SDSS-I overlap area, produces 29 SN candidates clearly associated with host galaxies. Using the Bayesian photometric classification algorithm of Poznanski et al. (2002PASP..114..833P), and correcting for classification bias, we find 17 of the 29 candidates are likely Type Ia SNe.

- Type Ia supernovae luminosities

- Description:
- Precision cosmology with Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) makes use of the fact that SN Ia luminosities depend on their light-curve shapes and colours. Using Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and other data, we show that there is an additional dependence on the global characteristics of their host galaxies: events of the same light-curve shape and colour are, on average, 0.08mag (~4.0{sigma}) brighter in massive host galaxies (presumably metal-rich) and galaxies with low specific star formation rates (sSFR).

- Description:
- We present a fully consistent catalog of local and global properties of host galaxies of 882 Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) that were selected based on their light-curve properties, spanning the redshift range 0.01<z<1. This catalog corresponds to a preliminary version of the compilation sample and includes Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) 5-year data, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and low-redshift surveys. We measured low- and moderate-redshift host galaxy photometry in SDSS stacked and single-epoch images and used spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting techniques to derive host properties such as stellar mass and U-V rest-frame colors; the latter are an indicator of the luminosity-weighted age of the stellar population in a galaxy. We combined these results with high-redshift host photometry from the SNLS survey and thus obtained a consistent catalog of host stellar masses and colors across a wide redshift range. We also estimated the local observed fluxes at the supernova location within a proper distance radius of 3kpc, corresponding to the SNLS imaging resolution, and transposed them into local U-V rest-frame colors. This is the first time that local environments surrounding SNIa have been measured at redshifts spanning the entire Hubble diagram. Selecting SNIa based on host photometry quality, we then performed cosmological fits using local color as a third standardization variable, for which we split the sample at the median value. We find a local color step significance of -0.091+/-0.013mag (7{sigma}), which effect is as significant as the maximum mass step effect. This indicates that the remaining luminosity variations in SNIa samples can be reduced with a third standardization variable that takes the environment into account. Correcting for the maximum mass step correction of -0.094+/-0.013mag, we find a local color effect of -0.057+/-0.012mag (5{sigma}), which shows that additional information is provided by the close environment of SNIa. Departures from the initial choices were investigated and showed that the local color effect is still present, although less pronounced. We discuss the possible implications for cosmology and find that using the local color in place of the stellar mass results in a change in the measured value of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter of 0.6%. Standardization using local U-V color in addition to stretch and color reduces the total dispersion in the Hubble diagram from 0.15 to 0.14mag. This will be of tremendous importance for the forthcoming SNIa surveys, and in particular for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), for which uncertainties on the dark energy equation of state will be comparable to the effects reported here.

- Description:
- Type 2 quasars are luminous active galactic nuclei whose central regions are obscured by large amounts of gas and dust. In this paper, we present a catalog of type 2 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, selected based on their optical emission lines. The catalog contains 887 objects with redshifts z<0.83; this is 6 times larger than the previous version and is by far the largest sample of type 2 quasars in the literature.

- u'BVg'r'i'z' light curves of SN 2008ax
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/389/955
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:

- Description:
- We present spectroscopy and photometry of the He-rich supernova (SN) 2008ax. The early-time spectra show prominent P-Cygni H lines, which decrease with time and disappear completely about 2 months after the explosion. In the same period HeI lines become the most prominent spectral features. SN 2008ax displays the ordinary spectral evolution of a Type IIb supernova. A stringent pre-discovery limit constrains the time of the shock breakout of SN 2008ax to within only a few hours. Its light curve, which peaks in the B band about 20d after the explosion, strongly resembles that of other He-rich core-collapse supernovae. The observed evolution of SN 2008ax is consistent with the explosion of a young Wolf-Rayet (of WNL type) star, which had retained a thin, low-mass shell of its original H envelope. The overall characteristics of SN 2008ax are reminiscent of those of SN 1993J, except for a likely smaller H mass. This may account for the findings that the progenitor of SN 2008ax was a WNL star and not a K supergiant as in the case of SN 1993J, that a prominent early-time peak is missing in the light curve of SN 2008ax, and that H{alpha} is observed at higher velocities in SN 2008ax than in SN 1993J.

- UBVRI griz light curves of SN 2012aw
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/433/1871
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present densely sampled UBVRI/griz photometric and low-resolution (6-10{AA}) optical spectroscopic observations from 4 to 270d after explosion of a newly discovered Type II SN 2012aw in a nearby (~9.9Mpc) galaxy M95. The light-curve characteristics of apparent magnitudes, colours, bolometric luminosity and the presence and evolution of prominent spectral features are found to have striking similarity with the archetypal IIP SNe 1999em, 1999gi and 2004et. The early time observations of SN 2012aw clearly detect minima in the light curve of V, R and I bands near 37d after explosion and this we suggest to be an observational evidence for emergence of recombination phase. The mid-plateau M_V_ magnitude (-16.67+/-0.04) lies in between the bright (~-18) and subluminous (~-15) IIP SNe. The mass of nickel is 0.06+/-0.01M{sun}. The synow modelling of spectra indicate that the value and evolution of the photospheric velocity is similar to SN 2004et, but about ~600km/s higher than that of SNe 1999em and 1999gi at comparable epochs. This trend is more apparent in the line velocities of H{alpha} and H{beta}. A comparison of ejecta velocity properties with that of existing radiation-hydrodynamical simulations indicate that the energy of explosion lies in the range 1-2x10^51^ergs; a further comparison of nebular phase [OI] doublet luminosity with SNe 2004et and 1987A indicate that the mass of progenitor star is about 14 to 15M_{sun}_. The presence of high-velocity absorption features in the mid-to-late plateau and possibly in early phase spectra show signs of interaction between ejecta and the circumstellar matter; being consistent with its early time detection at X-ray and radio wavebands.

- ugriz colors of RR Lyrae stars in SDSS Stripe 82
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/834/160
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with the photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the (V-R)_MACHO_ or (V-I) colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by analyzing the RR Lyraes in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 Region. Multi-epoch data are available for RR Lyraes located within the footprint of the Stripe 82 Region in five (ugriz) bands. We present the PC and AC relations at maximum and minimum light in four colors: (u-g)_0_, (g-r)_0_, (r-i)_0_, and (i-z)_0_, after they are corrected for extinction. We found that the PC and AC relations for this sample of RR Lyraes show a complex nature in the form of flat, linear or quadratic relations. Furthermore, the PC relations at minimum light for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars are separated according to the Oosterhoff type, especially in the (g-r)_0_ and (r-i)_0_ colors. If only considering the results from linear regressions, our results are quantitatively consistent with the theory of HIF-photosphere interaction for both fundamental and first overtone RR Lyraes.
