- IRD and HPF spectra of TRAPPIST-1b,e and f

- Description:
- We obtained high-resolution spectra of the ultracool M-dwarf TRAPPIST-1 during the transit of its planet "b" using two high-dispersion near-infrared spectrographs, the Infrared Doppler (IRD) instrument on the Subaru 8.2m telescope, and the Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF) instrument on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. These spectroscopic observations are complemented by a photometric transit observation for planet "b" using the APO/ARCTIC, which assisted us in capturing the correct transit times for our transit spectroscopy. Using the data obtained by the new IRD and HPF observations, as well as the prior transit observations of planets "b," "e" and "f" from IRD, we attempt to constrain the atmospheric escape of the planet using the Hei triplet 10830{AA} absorption line. We do not detect evidence for any primordial extended H-He atmospheres in all three planets. To limit any planet-related absorption, we place an upper limit on the equivalent widths of <7.754m{AA} for planet "b," <10.458m{AA} for planet "e," <4.143m{AA} for planet "f" at 95% confidence from the IRD data, and <3.467m{AA} for planet "b" at 95% confidence from HPF data. Using these limits along with a solar- like composition isothermal Parker wind model, we attempt to constrain the mass-loss rates for the three planets. For TRAPPIST-1b, our models exclude the highest possible energy-limited rate for a wind temperature <5000K. This nondetection of extended atmospheres with low mean-molecular weights in all three planets aids in further constraining their atmospheric composition by steering the focus toward the search of high-molecular-weight species in their atmospheres.

- IR measurement of quasar obscuration
- Short Name:

- Description:
- Recent work has suggested that the fraction of obscured AGNs declines with increasing luminosity, but it has been difficult to quantify this trend. Here we attempt to measure this fraction as a function of luminosity by studying the ratio of mid-infrared to intrinsic nuclear bolometric luminosity in unobscured AGNs. Because the mid-infrared is created by dust reprocessing of shorter wavelength nuclear light, this ratio is a diagnostic of f_obsc_, the fraction of solid angle around the nucleus covered by obscuring matter. In order to eliminate possible redshift dependences while also achieving a large dynamic range in luminosity, we have collected archival 24um MIPS photometry from objects with z~1 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR5, the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, and the Cosmic Evolution Survey. To measure the bolometric luminosity for each object, we used archival optical data supplemented by GALEX data.

- IR observations of galaxies in the Coma cluster

- Description:
- We present a thorough study of the specific star formation rates (sSFRs) for MIPS 24um selected galaxies in the Coma cluster. We build galaxy spectral energy distributions using optical (u', g', r', i', z'), near-infrared (J, H, Ks), and mid- to far-infrared (Infrared Array Camera and MIPS) photometry. New and archival spectra confirm 210 cluster members. Subsequently, the total infrared luminosity, galaxy stellar mass, and sSFR for the members are determined by measuring best-fit templates. Using an array of complementary diagnostics, we search for any contaminating active galactic nuclei, but find few. We compare obscured SFRs to unobscured rates derived from extinction-corrected H{alpha} emission line measurements. The agreement between these two values leads us to conclude that there is no evidence for an additionally obscured component. In our spectroscopic sample, complete to 80% for r'<19.5, we find that all starbursts are blue and are dwarfs, having masses <10^9^M_{sun}_. Examining the location of these starbursts within the cluster, we confirm that there is a lower fraction in the cluster core.

- Isolated compact elliptical galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/other/Sci/348.
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Compact elliptical galaxies form a rare class of stellar system (~30 presently known) characterized by high stellar densities and small sizes and often harboring metal-rich stars. They were thought to form through tidal stripping of massive progenitors, until two isolated objects were discovered where massive galaxies performing the stripping could not be identified. By mining astronomical survey data, we have now found 195 compact elliptical galaxies in all types of environment. They all share similar dynamical and stellar population properties. Dynamical analysis for nonisolated galaxies demonstrates the feasibility of their ejection from host clusters and groups by three-body encounters, which is in agreement with numerical simulations. Hence, isolated compact elliptical and isolated quiescent dwarf galaxies are tidally stripped systems that ran away from their hosts.

- Isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/787/102
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report on a study of the isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies to very faint levels, reaching ~0.1% of the sky brightness. The galaxies are from the Large Format Camera (LFC) fields obtained using the Palomar 5 m Hale Telescope, with integrated exposures ranging from 1 to 4 hr in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey r, i, and z bands. The shapes of isophotes of early-type galaxies are important, as they are correlated with the physical properties of the galaxies and are influenced by galaxy formation processes. In this paper, we report on a sample of 132 E and SO galaxies in one LFC field. We have redshifts for 53 of these, obtained using AAOmega on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The shapes of early-type galaxies often vary with radius. We derive average values of isophotal shape parameters in four different radial bins along the semi-major axis in each galaxy. We obtain empirical fitting formulae for the probability distribution of the isophotal parameters in each bin and investigate for possible correlations with other global properties of the galaxies. Our main finding is that the isophotal shapes of the inner regions are statistically different from those in the outer regions. This suggests that the outer and inner parts of early-type galaxies have evolved somewhat independently.

- Description:
- We present results of a deep spectroscopic survey quantifying the statistics of the escape of ionizing radiation from star-forming galaxies at z~3. We measure the ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density <f_900_/f_1500_>_obs_, where f_900_ is the mean flux density evaluated over the range [880,910]{AA}. We quantify the emergent ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density by analyzing high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectra formed from subsamples with common observed properties and numbers sufficient to reduce the statistical uncertainty in the modeled IGM+CGM correction to obtain precise values of <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_, including a full-sample average <f_900_/f_1500>_out_=0.057{+/-}0.006. We show that <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_ increases monotonically with W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha}), inducing an inverse correlation with UV luminosity as a by-product. We fit the composite spectra using stellar spectral synthesis together with models of the ISM in which a fraction f_c_ of the stellar continuum is covered by gas with column density N_HI_. We show that the composite spectra simultaneously constrain the intrinsic properties of the stars (L_900_/L_1500_)_int_ along with f_c_, N_HI_, E(B-V), and f_esc,abs_, the absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons. We find a sample-averaged f_esc,abs_=0.09{+/-}0.01, with subsamples falling along a linear relation <f_esc,abs_>~0.75[W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha})/110{AA}]. Using the far-UV luminosity function, the distribution function n(W(Ly{alpha})), and the relationship between W_{lambda}_(Ly{alpha}) and <f_900_/f_1500_>_out_, we estimate the total ionizing emissivity of z~3 star-forming galaxies with M_uv_<=-19.5, which exceeds the contribution of quasi-stellar objects by a factor of ~3, and accounts for ~50% of the total {epsilon}LyC at z~3 estimated using indirect methods.

- Description:
- We describe the photometric calibration and stellar classification methods used by the Stellar Classification Project to produce the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC). The KIC is a catalog containing photometric and physical data for sources in the Kepler mission field of view; it is used by the mission to select optimal targets. Four of the visible-light (g, r, i, z) magnitudes used in the KIC are tied to Sloan Digital Sky Survey magnitudes; the fifth (D51) is an AB magnitude calibrated to be consistent with Castelli & Kurucz (CK) model atmosphere fluxes. We derived atmospheric extinction corrections from hourly observations of secondary standard fields within the Kepler field of view.

- KIC star parallaxes from asteroseismology vs Gaia
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/844/102
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present a comparison of parallaxes and radii from asteroseismology and Gaia DR1 (TGAS) for 2200 Kepler stars spanning from the main sequence to the red-giant branch. We show that previously identified offsets between TGAS parallaxes and distances derived from asteroseismology and eclipsing binaries have likely been overestimated for parallaxes <~5-10mas (~90%-98% of the TGAS sample). The observed differences in our sample can furthermore be partially compensated by adopting a hotter Teff scale (such as the infrared flux method) instead of spectroscopic temperatures for dwarfs and subgiants. Residual systematic differences are at the ~2% level in parallax across three orders of magnitude. We use TGAS parallaxes to empirically demonstrate that asteroseismic radii are accurate to ~5% or better for stars between ~0.8-8R_{sun}_. We find no significant offset for main- sequence (<~1.5R_{sun}_) and low-luminosity RGB stars (~3-8R_{sun}_), but seismic radii appear to be systematically underestimated by ~5% for subgiants (~1.5-3R_{sun}_). We find no systematic errors as a function of metallicity between [Fe/H]~-0.8 to +0.4dex, and show tentative evidence that corrections to the scaling relation for the large frequency separation ({Delta}{nu}) improve the agreement with TGAS for RGB stars. Finally, we demonstrate that beyond ~3kpc asteroseismology will provide more precise distances than end-of-mission Gaia data, highlighting the synergy and complementary nature of Gaia and asteroseismology for studying galactic stellar populations.

- Description:
- We relate transitions in galaxy structure and gas content to refueling, here defined to include both the external gas accretion and the internal gas processing needed to renew reservoirs for star formation. We analyze two z=0 data sets: a high-quality ~200 galaxy sample (the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, data release herein) and a volume-limited ~3000 galaxy sample with reprocessed archival data. Both reach down to baryonic masses ~10^9^M_{sun}_ and span void-to-cluster environments. Two mass-dependent transitions are evident: (1) below the "gas-richness threshold" scale (V~125km/s), gas-dominated quasi-bulgeless Sd-Im galaxies become numerically dominant; while (2) above the "bimodality" scale (V~200km/s), gas-starved E/S0s become the norm. Notwithstanding these transitions, galaxy mass (or V as its proxy) is a poor predictor of gas-to-stellar mass ratio M_gas_/M_*_. Instead, M_gas_/M_*_ correlates well with the ratio of a galaxy's stellar mass formed in the last Gyr to its preexisting stellar mass, such that the two ratios have numerically similar values. This striking correspondence between past-averaged star formation and current gas richness implies routine refueling of star-forming galaxies on Gyr timescales. We argue that this refueling underlies the tight M_gas_/M_*_ versus color correlations often used to measure "photometric gas fractions." Furthermore, the threshold and bimodality scale transitions reflect mass-dependent demographic shifts between three refueling regimes--accretion-dominated, processing-dominated, and quenched. In this picture, gas-dominated dwarfs are explained not by inefficient star formation but by overwhelming gas accretion, which fuels stellar mass doubling in <~1Gyr. Moreover, moderately gas-rich bulged disks such as the Milky Way are transitional, becoming abundant only in the narrow range between the threshold and bimodality scales.

- Kinematic study of the Leo II dwarf galaxy
- Short Name:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We conducted a large spectroscopic survey of 336 red giants in the direction of the Leo II dwarf galaxy using Hectochelle on the Multiple Mirror Telescope, and we conclude that 175 of them are members based on their radial velocities and surface gravities. Of this set, 40 stars have never before been observed spectroscopically. The systemic velocity of the dwarf is 78.3+/-0.6km/s with a velocity dispersion of 7.4+/-0.4km/s. We identify one star beyond the tidal radius of Leo II but find no signatures of uniform rotation, kinematic asymmetries, or streams. The stars show a strong metallicity gradient of -1.53+/-0.10dex/kpc and have a mean metallicity of -1.70+/-0.02dex.
