- 25,563 radial velocity measurements are reported for 1359 single-lined stars in the Carney-Latham sample of 1464 stars selected for high proper motion; for 171 of these, spectroscopic orbital solutions are derived. The radial velocities of nearly all of the 1464 stars defined in Paper XII (J/AJ/107/2240) have been monitored with the CfA Digital Speedometers (see Latham 1985, in IAU Colloq. 88, 21; and 1992, in IAU Colloq. 135, 110). Three nearly identical instruments have been used on the Multiple Mirror Telescope and 1.5 m Tillinghast Reflector at the F.L. Whipple Observatory atop Mount Hopkins, Arizona, and on the 1.5m Wyeth Reflector located at the Oak Ridge Observatory in the town of Harvard, Massachusetts. Echelle spectrographs have been used with photon counting intensified Reticon detectors to record about 45Angstroems of spectrum in a single order. Most of the spectra were centered near 5187Angstroems, but a significant number of the early spectra were centered near 5197Angstroems. The shift in central wavelength was adopted in order to include all three lines of the Mgb triplet, after it was fully appreciated that all the other lines in our spectral window became extremely weak for our most metal-poor stars. The spectral resolution is about 8.5km.s-1 for all our exposures, and the signal-to-noise ratios range from about 5 to 50 per resolution element.

- Three of the six southern Clube Areas that were mainly observed at the European Southern Observatory and whose principal results are given in Paper XVI (Griffin & Cornell 2006, Cat. <J/MNRAS/371/1140>) are marginally observable from Haute-Provence. Additional measurements obtained on several observing runs there enabled orbits to be determined (in most cases rather poorly, owing to the paucity of data) for 30 of the newly discovered spectroscopic-binary systems; they are presented in this paper. One object, HD 33978, seems to be of such significance that special efforts have been made, largely by Drs J. Andersen and H. Lindgren, to obtain additional radial-velocity measurements. That system is shown to be a double-lined binary with a period of only 10.67d despite one of its components being a late-type giant. The giant star has a projected rotational velocity of almost 40km/s; it could be expected to exhibit RS CVn-type photometric variations, which have not yet been observed, in addition to the 'ellipsoidal variation', discovered by Hipparcos, which occasioned its designation as VV Lep.

- New close sub-systems are discovered in wide physical multiple stars. Elements of spectroscopic orbits are given for the components of quadruple systems ADS 1315C, 3608C, 3824C, 3991A and for the components of triple systems ADS 1849A, 6646A, 8861A. Physical parameters (magnitudes, spectral types, masses of individual components, distances to the systems, angular separations) are estimated by combining all available data. The nearby M dwarf ADS 8861A = Gliese 507A is a good candidate for speckle resolution. The very hot white dwarf discovered by Hodgkin et al. (1993) is likely to be an additional visual component to ADS 3824C, so this system may be quintuple; however, a search of 2.993d photometric periodicity possibly caused by the hot close companion is highly desirable.

- We present the analysis of a high-resolution, high-quality sample of optical spectra for 76 subdwarf B (sdB) stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY, Napiwotzki et al., 2001A&A...367..973N). Effective temperature, surface gravity, and photospheric helium abundance are determined simultaneously by fitting the profiles of hydrogen and helium lines using synthetic spectra calculated from LTE and NLTE model atmospheres. We perform a detailed comparison of our measurements with theoretical calculations, both for single star evolution and for binary population synthesis models of close binary evolution.

- V1197 Orionis light curves from a long-term observing program for red giant binaries show ellipsoidal variation of small amplitude in the V and R_C_ bands, although not clearly in U and B. Eclipses are not detected. All four bands show large irregular intrinsic variations, including fleeting quasi-periodicities identified by power spectra, that degrade analysis and may be caused by dynamical tides generated by orbital eccentricity. To deal with the absence of eclipses and consequent lack of astrophysical and geometrical information, direct use is made of the Hipparcos parallax distance while the V and R_C_ light curves and (older) radial velocity curves are analyzed simultaneously in terms of absolute flux. The red giant's temperature is estimated from new spectra. The dim companion has not been observed or discussed in the literature but most solutions find its mass to be well below that of the red giant. Solutions show red giant masses that are too low for evolution to the red giant stage within the age of the Galaxy, although that result is probably an artifact of the intrinsic brightness fluctuations.

- We have derived new orbits for {zeta} Aur, 32 Cyg, and 31 Cyg with observations from the Tennessee State University (TSU) Automatic Spectroscopic Telescope, and used them to identify nonorbital velocities of the cool supergiant components of these systems. Our concurrent photometry detected the nonradial pulsations driven by tides (ellipsoidal variation) in both {zeta} Aur and 32 Cyg, at a level and phasing roughly consistent with simple theory to first order, although they seem to require moderately large gravity darkening. We point out two fundamental questions in the interpretation of these stars: (1) whether it is appropriate to model the surface brightness as gravity darkening and (2) whether much of the nonorbital velocity structure may actually represent changes in the convective flows in the stars' atmospheres.

- We present the discovery and characterisation of the post-common-envelope central star system in the planetary nebula PN G283.7-05.1. Deep images taken as part of the POPIPlaN survey indicate that the nebula may possess a bipolar morphology similar to other post-common-envelope planetary nebulae. Simultaneous light and radial velocity curve modelling reveals the newly discovered binary system to comprise a highly-irradiated, M-type main-sequence star in a 5.9 hour orbit with a hot pre-white-dwarf. The nebular progenitor is found to have a particularly low mass of around 0.4M_{sun}_, making PN G283.7-05.1 one of only a handful of candidate planetary nebulae to be the product of a common-envelope event while still on the red giant branch. Beyond its low mass, the model temperature, surface gravity and luminosity are all found to be consistent with the observed stellar and nebular spectra through comparison with model atmospheres and photoionisation modelling. However, the high temperature (Teff~95kK) and high luminosity of the central star of the nebula are not consistent with post-RGB evolutionary tracks.

- We present a detailed study of the stellar and orbital parameters of the post-common envelope binary central star of the planetary nebula Ou5. Low-resolution spectra obtained during the primary eclipse - to our knowledge the first isolated spectra of the companion to a post-common-envelope planetary nebula central star - were compared to catalogue spectra, indicating that the companion star is a late K- or early M-type dwarf. Simultaneous modelling of multi-band photometry and time-resolved radial velocity measurements was then used to independently determine the parameters of both stars as well as the orbital period and inclination. The modelling indicates that the companion star is low mass (~0.25M_{sun}_) and has a radius significantly larger than would be expected for its mass. Furthermore, the effective temperature and surface gravity of nebular progenitor, as derived by the modelling, do not lie on single-star post-AGB evolutionary tracks, instead being more consistent with a post-RGB evolution. However, an accurate determination of the component masses is challenging. This is principally due to the uncertainty on the locus of the spectral lines generated by the irradiation of the companion's atmosphere by the hot primary (used to derive companion star's radial velocities), as well as the lack of radial velocities of the primary.

- The project Massive Unseen Companions to Hot Faint Underluminous Stars from SDSS (MUCHFUSS) aims at finding sdBs with compact companions like supermassive white dwarfs (M>1.0M_{sun}_), neutron stars or black holes. The existence of such systems is predicted by binary evolution theory and recent discoveries indicate that they are likely to exist in our Galaxy. A determination of the orbital parameters is sufficient to put a lower limit on the companion mass by calculating the binary mass function. If this lower limit exceeds the Chandrasekhar mass and no sign of a companion is visible in the spectra, the existence of a massive compact companion is proven without the need for any additional assumptions. We identified about 1100 hot subdwarf stars from the SDSS by colour selection and visual inspection of their spectra. Stars with high velocities have been reobserved and individual SDSS spectra have been analysed. In total 127 radial velocity variable subdwarfs have been discovered. Binaries with high RV shifts and binaries with moderate shifts within short timespans have the highest probability of hosting massive compact companions. Atmospheric parameters of 69 hot subdwarfs in these binary systems have been determined by means of a quantitative spectral analysis. The atmospheric parameter distribution of the selected sample does not differ from previously studied samples of hot subdwarfs. The systems are considered the best candidates to search for massive compact companions by follow-up time resolved spectroscopy.
