The mergers of galaxy clusters are the most energetic events in the universe after the Big Bang. An ever increasing fraction of local clusters exhibit signs of recent or past mergers. Our goal is to probe how these mergers affect the evolution and content of their member galaxies. We specifically aim to answer the following questions: Is the quenching of star formation in merging clusters enhanced when compared with relaxed clusters? Is the quenching accompanied by a (short lived) burst of star formation? We obtained optical spectroscopy of $>400$ galaxies in the field of the merging cluster Abell 520. We combine these observations with archival data to get a comprehensive picture of the state of star formation in the members of this merging cluster. Finally, we compare these observations with a control sample of 10 non-merging clusters at the same redshift from The Arizona Cluster Redshift Survey (ACReS). We split the member galaxies in passive, star forming or recently quenched depending on their spectra. The core of the merger shows a decreased fraction of star-forming galaxies compared to clusters in the non-merging sample. This region, dominated by passive galaxies, is extended along the axis of the merger. We find evidence of rapid quenching of the galaxies during the core passage with no signs of a star burst on the time scales of the merger. Additionally, we report the tentative discovery of an infalling group along the main filament feeding the merger, currently at ~2.5Mpc from the merger centre. This group contains a high fraction of star forming galaxies as well as ~2/3 of all the recently quenched galaxies in our survey.

We present a technique that applies spectral synthesis to medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS; R~6000) in the red (6300{AA}<{lambda}<9100{AA}) to measure [Fe/H] and [{alpha}/Fe] of individual red giant stars over a wide metallicity range. We apply our technique to 264 red giant stars in seven Galactic globular clusters and demonstrate that it reproduces the metallicities and {alpha}-enhancements derived from high-resolution spectroscopy (HRS). The MRS technique excludes the three CaII triplet lines and instead relies on a plethora of weaker lines. Unlike empirical metallicity estimators, such as the equivalent width of the CaII triplet, the synthetic method presented here is applicable over an arbitrarily wide metallicity range and is independent of assumptions about the {alpha}-enhancement.

We present a catalog of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 2961 stars in eight dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW): Sculptor, Fornax, Leo I, Sextans, Leo II, Canes Venatici I, Ursa Minor, and Draco. For the purposes of validating our measurements, we also observed 445 red giants in MW globular clusters and 21 field red giants in the MW halo. The measurements are based on Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) combined with spectral synthesis. We estimate uncertainties in [Fe/H] by quantifying the dispersion of [Fe/H] measurements in a sample of stars in monometallic globular clusters (GCs). We estimate uncertainties in Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances by comparing to high-resolution spectroscopic abundances of the same stars. For this purpose, a sample of 132 stars with published high-resolution spectroscopy in GCs, the MW halo field, and dwarf galaxies has been observed with MRS. The standard deviations of the differences in [Fe/H] and <[{alpha}/Fe]> (the average of [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe]) between the two samples is 0.15 and 0.16, respectively.

We present the first measure of Fe and Na abundances in NGC 6362, a low-mass globular cluster (GC) where first- and second-generation stars are fully spatially mixed. A total of 160 member stars (along the red giant branch (RGB) and the red horizontal branch (RHB)) were observed with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. We find that the cluster has an iron abundance of [Fe/H]=-1.09+/-0.01dex, without evidence of intrinsic dispersion. On the other hand, the [Na/Fe] distribution turns out to be intrinsically broad and bimodal. The Na-poor and Na-rich stars populate, respectively, the bluest and the reddest RGBs detected in the color-magnitude diagrams including the U filter. The RGB is composed of a mixture of first- and second-generation stars in a similar proportion, while almost all the RHB stars belong to the first cluster generation. To date, NGC 6362 is the least massive GC where both the photometric and spectroscopic signatures of multiple populations have been detected.

We present radial velocities and Fe and Al abundances for 180 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ({omega} Cen). The majority of our data lie in the range 11.0<V<13.5, which covers the RGB from about 1mag above the horizontal branch to the RGB tip. The selection procedures are biased toward preferentially observing the more metal-poor and luminous stars of {omega} Cen. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution spectra (R~13000) obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. Our results are in agreement with previous studies as we find at least four different metallicity populations with [Fe/H]=-1.75, -1.45, -1.05, and -0.75, with a full range of -2.20<~[Fe/H]<~-0.70. Results seem to fit in the adopted scheme that star formation occurred in {omega} Cen over >1Gyr.

Spectra, positions, magnitudes and colours are presented for 1400 faint (B<~21mag) stellar objects identified in a complete, ultraviolet-excess (UVX) survey. The objects were selected from COSMOS machine measurements of UK Schmidt U and J plates and observed with the Fibre Optic Coupled Aperture Plate (FOCAP) system at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). In total, 420 QSOs were identified, of which nine belong to the broad absorption line (BAL) class of QSOs. A further 57 galaxies with narrow emission lines were found. Halo subdwarfs from the vast majority (~90 per cent) of the 824 galactic stars identified in this survey; the remaining galactic stars are comprised principally of hot white dwarfs (42 objects) and horizontal branch stars (nine objects). Updated versions of the QSO number-magnitude relation and luminosity function derived from this survey are also presented in this paper.

A new, complete sample of 14584 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z<0.35 is presented, which are uncovered homogeneously from the complete database of galaxies and quasars observed spectroscopically in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Seventh Data Release. The stellar continuum is properly removed for each spectrum with significant host absorption line features, and careful analyses of the emission line spectra, particularly in the H{alpha} and H{beta} wavebands, are carried out. The broad Balmer emission line, particularly H{alpha}, is used to indicate the presence of an AGN. The broad H{alpha} lines have luminosities in a range of 10^38.5^-10^44.3^erg/s, and line widths (FWHMs) of 500-34000km/s. The virial black hole masses, estimated from the broad-line measurements, span a range of 10^5.1^-10^10.3^M_{sun}_, and the Eddington ratios vary from -3.3 to 1.3 in logarithmic scale. Other quantities such as multiwavelength photometric properties and flags denoting peculiar line profiles are also included in this catalog. We describe the construction of this catalog and briefly discuss its properties. The catalog is publicly available online. This homogeneously selected AGN catalog, along with the accurately measured spectral parameters, provides the most updated, largest AGN sample data, which will enable further comprehensive investigations of the properties of the AGN population in the low-redshift universe.

This is a detailed spectral classification of 96 active galaxies from the Veron-Cetty and Veron catalog (2010, Version 13, Cat. VII/258) of active galaxies and quasars. These objects were identified as radio sources using standard radio catalogs. Those galaxies which had radio sources in at least 6 different radio bands and had been identified spectrally in the SDSS catalog were selected. The types of activity of these were determined using their SDSS spectra. Three diagnostic diagrams and a direct study of the spectra were used for more certain classification. As a result, the classifications of 85% of the objects were changed. The radio sources in different radio bands make it possible to construct the spectral distribution of the energy in the radio range and to compare it with the optical activity types.

In this study we carry out detailed spectral classification of 173 AGN candidates from the Joint HRC/BHRC sample, which is a combination of HRC (Hamburg-ROSAT Catalogue) and BHRC (Byurakan-Hamburg-ROSAT Catalogue). These objects were revealed as optical counterparts for ROSAT X-ray sources, however spectra for 173 of them are given in SDSS without definite spectral classification. We studied these 173 objects using the SDSS spectra and revealed the detailed activity types for them. Three diagnostic diagrams and direct examination of the spectra were used to have more confident classification. We also made identification of these sources in other wavelength ranges and calculated some of their parameters.

Galaxy-galaxy mergers and close interactions have long been regarded as a viable mechanism for channeling gas toward the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies which are triggered as active galactic nuclei (AGNs). AGN pairs, in which the central SMBHs of a galaxy merger are both active, are expected to be common from such events. We conduct a systematic study of 1286 AGN pairs at \bar{z}~0.1 with line-of-sight velocity offsets {Delta}v<600km/s and projected separations r_p_<100h^-1^_70_kpc, selected from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, Cat. II/294). This AGN pair sample was drawn from 138070 AGNs optically identified based on diagnostic emission line ratios and/or line widths. The fraction of AGN pairs with 5h^-1^_70_kpc<~r_p_<100h^-1^_70_kpc among all spectroscopically selected AGNs at 0.02<z<0.16 is 3.6% after correcting for SDSS spectroscopic incompleteness; ~30% of these pairs show morphological tidal features in their SDSS images, and the fraction becomes >~80% for pairs with the brightest nuclei.
