- We have estimated fundamental parameters for a sample of co-moving stars observed by Gaia and identified by Oh et al (2017, J/AJ/153/257). We matched the Gaia observations to the 2MASS and Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer catalogs and fit MIST isochrones to the data, deriving estimates of the mass, radius, [Fe/H], age, distance, and extinction to 9754 stars in the original sample of 10606 stars. We verify these estimates by comparing our new results to previous analyses of nearby stars, examining fiducial cluster properties, and estimating the power-law slope of the local present-day mass function. A comparison to previous studies suggests that our mass estimates are robust, while metallicity and age estimates are increasingly uncertain. We use our calculated masses to examine the properties of binaries in the sample and show that separation of the pairs dominates the observed binding energies and expected lifetimes.

- We present a catalog of 80 very wide fragile binary candidates (projected separations >10000AU) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Eight spectral archive. The pairs were selected based on proper motion, radial velocity, metallicity, and photometric parallax criteria. The angular separations of these pairs range from 3" to 250". The peak in the metallicity distribution of these pairs is about -0.5dex of solar metallicity. Space motions and reduced proper motion diagrams indicate that all these pairs are members of the disk. The chromospheric activity index S_HK_ of each component in 38 binary candidates having spectra of high signal-to-noise ratio and member stars of three open clusters (NGC 2420, M67, and NGC 6791) were measured. The S_HK_ versus color relation for these binary candidates is consistent with the trend seen in these open clusters. The ages implied by this relation suggest that fragile wide pairs can survive longer than 8Gyr.

- Updated data of the 153 Galactic globular clusters are used to readdress fundamental parameters of the Milky Way, such as the distance of the Sun to the Galactic centre, the bulge and halo structural parameters, and cluster destruction rates. We build a reduced sample that has been decontaminated of all the clusters younger than 10Gyrs and of those with retrograde orbits and/or evidence of relation to dwarf galaxies. The reduced sample contains 116 globular clusters that are tested for whether they were formed in the primordial collapse.

- We have obtained multi-wavelength observations of compact Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) to probe post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolution from the onset of nebular ejection. We analyze new observations from Hubble Space Telescope to derive the masses and evolutionary status of their central stars (CSs) in order to better understand the relationship between the CS properties and those of the surrounding nebulae. We work with HST/WFC3 images of 51 targets obtained in a snapshot survey (GO-11657). The high spatial resolution of HST allows us to resolve these compact PNe and distinguish the CS emission from that of their surrounding PNe. The targets were imaged through the filters F200LP, F350LP, and F814W from which we derive Johnson V and I magnitudes. We derive CS bolometric luminosities and effective temperatures using the Zanstra technique, from a combination of HST photometry and ground-based spectroscopic data. We present new unique photometric measurements of 50 CSs, and derived effective temperatures and luminosities for most of them.

- Approximately 70% of the nearby white dwarfs appear to be single stars, with the remainder being members of binary or multiple star systems. The most numerous and most easily identifiable systems are those in which the main-sequence companion is an M star, since even if the systems are unresolved the white dwarf either dominates or is at least competitive with the luminosity of the companion at optical wavelengths. Harder to identify are systems where the non-degenerate component has a spectral type earlier than M0 and the white dwarf becomes the less luminous component. Taking Sirius as the prototype, these latter systems are referred to here as 'Sirius like'. There are currently 98 known Sirius-like systems. Studies of the local white dwarf population within 20pc indicate that approximately 8 percent of all white dwarfs are members of Sirius-like systems, yet beyond 20pc the frequency of known Sirius-like systems declines to between 1 and 2 percent, indicating that many more of these systems remain to be found. Estimates are provided for the local space density of Sirius-like systems and their relative frequency among both the local white dwarf population and the local population of A to K main-sequence stars. The great majority of currently unidentified Sirius-like systems will likely turn out to be closely separated and unresolved binaries. Ways to observationally detect and study these systems are discussed.

- Pseudomagnitude distances applied to the Pleiades

- The concept of pseudomagnitude was recently introduced to estimate apparent stellar diameters using a strictly observational methodology. Pseudomagnitudes are distance indicators, which have the remarkable property of being reddening free. In this study, we use Hipparcos parallax measurements to compute the mean absolute pseudomagnitudes of solar neighbourhood dwarf stars as a function of their spectral type. To illustrate the use of absolute pseudomagnitudes, we derive the distance moduli of 360 Pleiades stars and find that the centroid of their distribution is 5.71+/-0.018, corresponding to a distance of 139.0+/-1.2pc. We locate the subset of ~50 Pleiades stars observed by Hipparcos at a mean distance of 135.5+/-3.7pc, thus confirming the frequently reported anomaly in the Hipparcos measurements of these stars.

- We demonstrate that reliable photometric distances of stellar clusters, and more generally of stars, can be obtained using pseudomagnitudes and rough spectral type without having to correct for visual absorption. We determine the mean absolute pseudomagnitude of all spectral (sub)types between B and K. Distances are computed from the difference between the star's observed pseudomagnitude and its spectral type's absolute pseudomagnitude. We compare the distances of 30 open clusters thus derived against the distances derived from TGAS parallaxes. Our computed distances, up to distance modulus 12, agree within 0.1mag rms with those obtained from TGAS parallaxes, proving excellent distance estimates. We show additionally that there are actually two markedly different distances in the cluster NGC 2264. We suggest that the pseudomagnitude distance estimation method, which is easy to perform, can be routinely used in all large-scale surveys where statistical distances on a set of stars, such as an open cluster, are required.

- We report the detection of spatially distinct stellar density features near the apocenters of the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream's main leading and trailing arm. These features are clearly visible in a high-fidelity stellar halo map that is based on RR Lyrae from Pan-STARRS1: there is a plume of stars 10kpc beyond the apocenter of the leading arm, and there is a "spur" extending to 130kpc, almost 30kpc beyond the previously detected apocenter of the trailing arm. Such an apocenter substructure is qualitatively expected in any Sgr stream model, as stars stripped from the progenitor at different pericenter passages become spatially separated there. The morphology of these new Sgr stream substructures could provide much-needed new clues and constraints for modeling the Sgr system, including the level of dynamical friction that Sgr has experienced. We also report the discovery of a new, presumably unrelated halo substructure at 80kpc from the Sun and 10{deg} from the Sgr orbital plane, which we dub the outer Virgo overdensity.

- We present the results of a direct imaging survey for very large separation (>100 AU), low-mass companions around 95 nearby young K5-L5 stars and brown dwarfs. They are high-likelihood candidates or confirmed members of the young (~<150 Myr) {beta} Pictoris and AB Doradus moving groups (ABDMG) and the TW Hya, Tucana-Horologium, Columba, Carina, and Argus associations. Images in i' and z' filters were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini South to search for companions down to an apparent magnitude of z'~22-24 at separations >~20" from the targets and in the remainder of the wide 5.5'x5.5' GMOS field of view. This allowed us to probe the most distant region where planetary-mass companions could be gravitationally bound to the targets. This region was left largely unstudied by past high-contrast imaging surveys, which probed much closer-in separations. This survey led to the discovery of a planetary-mass (9-13 M_Jup_) companion at 2000 AU from the M3V star GU Psc, a highly probable member of ABDMG. No other substellar companions were identified. These results allowed us to constrain the frequency of distant planetary-mass companions (5-13 M_Jup_) to 0.84_-0.66_^+6.73^% (95% confidence) at semimajor axes between 500 and 5000 AU around young K5-L5 stars and brown dwarfs. This is consistent with other studies suggesting that gravitationally bound planetary-mass companions at wide separations from low-mass stars are relatively rare.

- We present the measurements of Faraday rotation for 477 pulsars observed by the Parkes 64m radio telescope and the Green Bank 100m radio telescope. Using these results, along with previous measurements for pulsars and extragalactic sources, we analyze the structure of the large-scale magnetic field in the Galactic disk. Comparisons of rotation measures of pulsars in the disk at different distances, as well as with rotation measures of background radio sources beyond the disk, reveal large-scale reversals of the field directions between the spiral arms and interarm regions. We develop a model for the disk magnetic field, which can reproduce not only these reversals but also the distribution of the observed rotation measures of background sources.
